Vice-Chancellor of the University of Jos, UNIJOS, Prof. Hayward Mafuyai, has appealed to striking lecturers, especially the institution’s local chapter, to accept the offer made by President Goodluck Jonathan at a recent meeting with their leadership and call off their over four-month old strike.
”Continuing the strike will in no way help, but we should take what government has given and press forward for the good of all as no one can deny that this government has done what no government has done in regards to the welfare of ASUU”, he told newsmen at the weekend.
”President Jonathan has done well by looking into the problems of ASUU; my appeal to them is to call off the strike.”
Mafuyai said UNIJOS has been recording various achievements in the area of research which has earned it recognition within and without the country.
He said that the university has been involved in phytomedicine researches for which it won a grant of $8,000,000 for the establishment of African Centre of Excellence sponsored by the World Bank.
”The university has produced anti-diabetic product, anti-hypertensive product, anti-snake venom vaccine and contraceptive product which it wants patented and produced in a commercial quantity “to force the university research out of the shelf for the advancement of the country and we are seeking for industries to partner with us to patent our products from phytomedicines”, the VC said.

And Lastly, consider, the newly admitted whom are eager to taste the
meal of the institution.

With respect to the death of Prof. Festus Iyayi and the ASUU strike, some lecturers has come out to say that late Festus wanted the call off but a sane person will know he was against the calling off.

Late Festus was a former president of ASUU and former president of SSANU and until his death, was a lecturer of UNIBEN and a very strong man(one of the pillars) of ASUU Nationwide.

We all know that UNIBEN voted for continuation of the strike and thus, late. Festus being a very strong man in ASUU, what do you think?

Let us not be decieved, none of the lecturere will come out and tell us he was against the strike because they know what the masses want to hear.

I HATE APC- am from d North and I will never forget what they(CPC Buhari) did to we in 2011.

Their rejecting the result isn't a suprise to me cos that is how Nigerian election is.

Even Buhari rejected an election in which he was sheerly beaten.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate in Saturday’s governorship election, Tony Nwoye yesterday said he would not participate in the planned supplementary election by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) if the commission refuses to cancel results in the 16 local governments it accepted had issues with voters’ register.

INEC had announced it would conduct supplementary election in some polling units across the state where results or election were cancelled.

But Nwoye, who spoke to Daily Sun yesterday said he won’t have any business with the supplementary polls if INEC refused to cancel election in the 16 local governments the commission admitted it “messed up.”

Nwoye, who himself was a victim of disenfranchisement asked INEC to explain what happened to the voters’ register used in 2011 and the one it gave the political parties few weeks to the election.

On the rumour making the rounds that some PDP members worked against the interest of the party, Nwoye said he knew his party supported him fully, adding that if anyone or group of people worked against the party, “I leave that to the person and his conscience.”

He insisted that INEC should do the needful and cancel the entire election so that it could put its house in order and conduct a credible election.

Experts at this year’s annual general meeting of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter, in Abuja, have called on media practitioners to imbibe the culture of promoting Nigeria’s positive values within and outside the country.

The participants, who spoke, on Wednesday, lamented that over the years, the country’s image has witnessed image-related challenges which to a large extent, has put citizens on a negative spot within global circles.

Chairman of the NIPR, Ohaeri Osondu, who said it is against the backdrop that the institute chose the theme of the conference, “Redefining Nigeria’s Image: The Role of Public Relations,” said it was disheartening that much of the country’s progress and achievements have been clouded and damaged by sheer weight of bad publicity and erroneous impression by the acts and actions of few individuals, corporate organisations and public officers.

Quoting former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s statement, Osondu pointed out that “the image of our country has been battered at home and abroad more by our own mishandling and mismanagement than by anything else.”

“We should strive to promote and project more of positives than negative fall-outs from our country. If we fail to report ourselves appropriately, we should not expect otherwise from the foreign media,” he urged.

Also speaking, Director of Defence Information, Brigadier-General Chris Olukolade, who is also a fellow of the institute, said media practitioners should do their job conscientiously and given the best that they could to the country.

“We believe we have enough in this country to project the nation. And by the way, you will realise that the Nigeria Armed Forces, by virtue of its participation in various foreign missions, has been able to project the nation’s image. Most people who contact this country, apart from football, have been through contact with Nigerian military outside the nation. And that, in itself, has been an opportunity to project the competence of Nigeria in global security,” he said.

The Chairman and Publisher of Blue Print Newspaper, Mohammed Idris, decried those who equate honorarium with public relations, saying “PR is not about ‘brown envelops’. Giving ‘brown envelops’ or ‘kola’ or taking bribe is not public relations.”

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has raised fresh alarm over the continued killing of Christians in the north by the dreaded Islamic sect, Boko Haram.

It expressed worries over the inability of government to nip the incessant killings of its members in the north-eastern Nigeria in the bud despite its declaration of state of emergency in three crisis-ridden states.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its special meeting on Wednesday in Abuja, the Christian body decried the new spate of killings in the area.

It alleged that several churches had been burnt since the killing was carried out without any of the attackers arrested.

“On the 3rd of this month at about 8pm, Boko Haram members attacked Ngoshe Village in Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State and killed 8 Christians: Baba Ayuba, Baba Bitrus and Baba Isa Biyabra, the security guard and four others whose names we are yet to get.

“They burnt 11 houses owned by the Christians and 3 churches: EYN church, Deeper Life Bible Church and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). We were informed that when the Christian community sought to meet the state governor on this issue, he said, he did not have the time to see them until February next year,” the communiqué read.

Also, the Christian body stated that on the night of November 14, Boko Haram invaded a Christian dominated village in Gwoza Local Government Area, killing two Christians and abducted three others.

It alleged that over a 100 houses were burnt by the assailants in a midnight raid.

It, however, urged Christians to continue to have confidence in the indivisibility of the country in the face of provocations and attacks.
It also called on the Federal Government to rise up to the task to protect the lives and property of the people, particularly the Christians living in the states of Borno and Yobe.

“As Christians, we must rediscover who we are, for the sake of the church today, evangelism and the yet unborn. This must be the beginning of your determination to build the Nigeria of our dreams, a Nigeria where no one is judged by their ethnic nationality or religion; a Nigeria where from the North to South, East to West, everyone is equal and treated as equals and as a Nigerian; a Nigeria where hard work is rewarded and wickedness punished,” it said.

The American Association of Laboratory Accreditation has given the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control’s laboratory an ISO 17025 accreditation.

The Director-General of NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii, stated that the accreditation has launched the agency’s two laboratories, Mycotoxin and Pesticides Residues Laboratories, in Oshodi, Lagos into the league of laboratories with international accreditations and recognition.

In a statement issued by the Director of Special Duties, Abuja, Mr. Jimoh Abubakar, Orhii noted that the accreditation would ensure that Nigerian products tested in the two laboratories were accepted in the international market.

He stated, “This is a major boost to the country’s image and food and agricultural transformation agenda of the Federal Government. All products analysed for export purpose by the two laboratories will now carry a special logo, making the commodities acceptable all over the world.”

Orhii said some other laboratories of the agency are also undergoing international accreditation which would boost efforts to get some pharmaceutical companies to obtain the World Health Organisation pre-qualification.
