This is a good time to be in a state university. Next year JAMB may swing in favour of state universities. Since Federal universities no won get sense.

Can we stop comparing Lagos to Anambra.

Lagos had a headstart. So any dumdum can rule Lagos and would be seen as a successful governor.

Can we compare what each aspirant got to offer?

We have numerous problems in Nigeria, which one are they willing to tackle?

If each successive government had been tackling one problem at a time, we won't be here today.

Omo...go bowen if u have the funds
Only God knows when ASUU strike will end.
Bowen is accredited and mbbs is mbbs anywhere.
Most federal universities are living on past glory.
Besides, if you leave Oau now and end up starting 200l, you might even finish before your mates in Oau.
This advice is good. if you have the fund, go to BOWEN @Adeboy29.

One of my friend was in 3rd year in a public university when his sister gained admission in private. Today, he's still in final year and his sister is also in final year and may graduate before him if ASUU strike persist till the end of this year.

Surely, we aren't sure if this strike would be the last one through out your stay in OAU. Go to private, repeating one year is nothing. You will still catch up with your mates in public universities and may even graduate before them if FG and ASUU continues their yearly ritual of madness.

But then, if there is no fund, go to LASU. The non Academics has called off their strike. So you can process your transcripts and other documents for transfer.

Politics / Re: I Will Hand Over Federal Universities To State Govts – Atiku Abubakar by samuelpeters(m): 8:24pm On Aug 22, 2022
Mynd44:

Yes. Universities have no power to touch these funds.

Now in what I have explained, these Unis will have to generate funds to be better and improve. They can start giving 6,12,24 months diplomas for a fee where you can go get a diploma in restaurant handling now or Viewing centre management. They bring actual restaurant management of Viewing centre owners to lecture you, and you pay.

How can universities of Agriculture now have farm markets?
How can Universities of tech not be supplying the local markets with solutions to their basic tech needs?

These universities have become redundant and need to be off-loaded. This can't happen while the government still control them
You mean federal universities do not have access to their acceptance fees?
If there are no benefits whatsoever, why are they charging for acceptance fee at all. They could have just charge 1000 naira.
I schooled at UNN. Acceptance fee was 6000, later increased to 25,000. I think it's up to 30k now.

So UNN no get share.
Education / Re: Opinion: Solution To ASUU Strike. by samuelpeters(m): 3:25pm On Aug 22, 2022
DrLevi:

What I hear you saying is "School is for the rich"... The rich don't even use the universities in question so it becomes pointless privatising them to start with. You raise the fees and these universities die a natural death. UTME registrations go from 1M+ to 10k

For a clearer example, look at our airlines in the last couple months since the hike. Ask them what happens when a product is unaffordable to the poor

And where does it end? with just education or we would take a shot at healthcare too?
Since the fees are relatively low has anything changed? Aren't our universities dying?

Personally, If privatization is not the answer then these universities should be given their autonomy. Let them fix their fees (with government regulation of course). That way; we are sure of graduates that are capable and sound. Not these half baked graduates that schooled with stop and start academic calendar.
Education / Re: Opinion: Solution To ASUU Strike. by samuelpeters(m): 12:46pm On Aug 22, 2022
DrLevi:

I’m not among the privilege so yes I would speak from my position.

Paying 45k for other charges was hard for me and the same for a lot of my colleagues and the entire student population.

If education was privatized, I would be a mechanic or computer operator or something. Definitely not even bother to go to the university.

10 universities translates to 60,000 admissions a year for a population of 200M. Does that scale make any sense to you considering half of that population live below the poverty line.

Only 5 of those universities have medical schools, so your medical workforce would be reduced to ~1000 freely trained doctors. The rest have to go at terrible fees or take student loan. I personally wouldn’t have bothered

You don’t see how healthcare would become very very expensive’? Because no doctor world accept the rubbish 180k COMESS currently offers

Your solution is terrible flawed. Universities aren’t the problem. The unnecessary theft and misappropriation of funds is the problem.
School is not for everyone!
Education especially tertiary is expensive anywhere in the world!
This the truth some of us do not want to accept.
Even FG knows that is the solution to this incessant strike.
Since they know you and I would kick against it, they continue to allow you get your below average education while they train their kids in standard universities round the world.

OP is right. Hold on to technology and first generation universities. Any poor child that wants to attend any of them would know he/she is up to the task. because it will be very competitive and those with the best brains would be admitted.
If you don't have money and NOT so brilliant, then look for something else.
Before all these; FG needs to upgrade and get our technical schools up and running too.

Education / Re: ASUU-FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock, Strike To Continue by samuelpeters(m): 12:26pm On Aug 17, 2022
starz100:

Federal universities can not be fully autonomous because they are not owned by ASUU. There is no way the government will wake up one day and raise its fees like those of private unis. Nobody will pay #300k in public university when you can get better education in private unis or abroad. Mind you the glory of the federal university is the high patronage it enjoys.
The reason why ASUU will never support a full fledge autonomy is because they will become like private universities. Public university lecturers , you should know earn far more than their private uni counterparts. If federal govt totally hands off subsidy of education, that will mark the beginning of the collapse of education. Again no amount of fee raise that will stop ASUU from going on strike in the future. Around 2001, school fees in federal university was about #3,500 per session, today in the same federal university it about a 100k,that is about 2800% increase for twenty years period. So, yes, this is not the first time.
Any fees increase without commensurate improvement in standard can backfire.
I get your point now.

The Education in Nigeria was given to us by the British when they colonised Nigeria.
They set up science labs and technical schools.
These are what educate the people to setup and successfully run fictional industries.
Properly equipped science laboratory AND technical schools .That is the foundation.
-
But when the British left, we Nigerians destroyed all our science laboratories, destroyed our technical schools and chose to cram answer and pass exam instead .
Now, nobody knows how to make anything.
Can you produce stainless steel? Do you even have any idea of the chemical equation and where to source the materials?
Yet stainless steel is the foundation steel used in every food industry because it doesn't rust.
Since we dont have enough of it, hence we have very few food industries and all their food is expensive. When last could you afford milk?
-
As we don't/can't produce anything, we chose to be importing instead. We have imported so-tey all our money has finished and we are now borrowing money from useless China (that can't even speak English)... The day they start using kungfu to dismantle our head, that's when we would stop borrowing more money.
-
All we do is import goods and pose with them. And this government is so good at expensive bullsh1t lifestyle.

And here is ASUU now crying for the upgrade that should have been part of their education right from the very beginning... Properly equipped laboratories, properly setup technical schools, and well paid staff to run and teach in these places. These are the foundation required to run industries that will produce and refine raw materials in to finished goods that can be exported to foreign exchange.
-
$1 = ₦1 back in the 70s. Today we are gathering. ₦700 to buy $1 and people are celebrating that the price has come down.
What a great STUPID celebration.
There's one point you made that I love so much. "Our science laboratories and technical schools." We destroyed it. Made it useless. First world countries still have their technical schools because it is an integral part of the the system.

In Nigeria, everybody wants to go-to the university. The university is not for everyone.

TenQ:

ASUU is not pretending that they are fighting for their Students nor the Educational institution of Nigeria. They are fighting for themselves.

There are only two Labour institutions in Nigeria that the FG have not been able to destroy ASUU and NMA!

Of a truth, Nigerian Universities are grossly underfunded compared with their counterparts outside the country.

My problem is that the FG doesn't know the Reason why they established the Universities: this is the fundamental Problem!

FG always negotiate with ASUU without asking for ANYTHING in return. It shows they don't have a need for the graduates from our Universities.

At a point, I see students paying higher tution!
Yes. I agree with you that our institutions are underfunded. But do you think FG don't know the solution to problem?
They do.

For our institutions to move forward, fees MUST go up. It's a better pill we don't want to accept. FG cannot fund all universities to be on par with others.

Education is expensive anywhere in the world.
Since they know you and I would protest if they increase fees and allow universities to be fully autonomous. They continue to keep fees as low as possible and send their children to get a sound education in either our private universities or abroad.

Mind you, in Federal universities, we don't pay tuition. What we pay are services rendered by the university.
Education / Re: ASUU-FG Meeting Ends In Deadlock, Strike To Continue by samuelpeters(m): 7:33am On Aug 17, 2022
TenQ:

You seem not to understand the problem
1. There was an agreement between ASUU and the FG
2. The FG did not ask for anything in return for the agreement
3. FG refused to implement agreement citing lack of funds
4. Everyone can see that with the so-called lack funds, FG is still able to purchase luxury vehicles for Niger Republic, build railway to Niger Republic amongst others
5. Should ASUU believe that the problem is Lack of money rather than lack of commitment?
How much is the fund ASUU is requesting?
1.3 trillion i.e; atleast 200billion every year for 5 years.

I'm not supporting FG's way of throwing money into unproductive ventures. Yet, what ASUU is requesting for is a lot.

Finally, their primary point is UTAS. Revitalization find is now secondary. So at the end of the day, na for their selfish reason.

That's what their president always say everytime he goes on live TV or whenever he's interviewed.

FG is never going to approve UTAS. The sooner ASUU realize this, the sooner we'll resume

UTAS is the main point now. Every other thing is secondary.

This agreement was made in 2009. If FG had kept to their promise do you think this issue would come up today.

I know we love blaming the government in power. But it doesn't work that way. FG only need to re-negotiate based on what is on ground now.

In the end, no sane person should support APC. They failed in other aspect.
