Sports / World Cup Team Of The Tournament by sarzwizard(m): 11:31pm On Jul 13, 2014 |
In goal we have Manuel Neuer who has come almost to redifine the role of a sweeper-keeper in Brazil. His supreme shot-stopping, awareness and use of the ball helped Germany to keep five clean sheets en route to glory as he cemented his place as the undisputed top player in the world in his position. At right back, we have gone for Philipp Lahm. Initially used in central midfield during the group phase, Joachim Low moved his captain back to his more natural position, and Germany conceded just two goals in the knockouts from then on. Consistently excellent on the ball and with a positional sense to better the world's best, Lahm was deservedly named on the Fifa Golden Ball shortlist. Mats Hummels lines up at centre-back after his exemplary showings for Germany. The Borussia Dortmund man banished any lingering doubts over his long-term fitness by playing in each of his side's seven matches, helping them to clean sheets against Portugal, USA, France - against whom he scored the winning goal with an emphatic header - and Argentina in the final. Alongside Hummels is Costa Rica hero Giancarlo Gonzalez, who was at the heart of the Central Americans' sensational run to the quarter-finals. He helped to shut out Italy and England in the group stage, as well as Netherlands during 120 minutes in the last eight, but his battling showing against Greece following Oscar Duarte's red card was his finest of the tournament. At left-back, Netherlands stalwart Daley Blind earns a spot following a coming-of-age three weeks in Brazil. Louis van Gaal's side earned a surprise third place in the tournament, with Blind deployed at left-back, left wing-back and central midfield as he delivered a superbly consistent string of performances. His two assists against Spain and first international goal in the playoff win over Brazil were the icing on the cake for the 24-year-old Javier Mascherano lines up in our double-pivot in midfield. The 30-year-old, deployed in his more traditional central role after two seasons at centre-back for Barcelona, was a rock for Argentina, helping the side to three clean sheets in the knockout phase while allowing the attacking stars more freedom to flourish. His performance against Netherlands - capped by a stunning late block on Arjen Robben - was arguably the best of his 104 international matches, and he ran himself ragged in the final. Alongside him is Toni Kroos, the heartbeat of the Germany machine. With two goals and four assists, Kroos was exemplary for Low's side throughout the tournament. His nomination for the Golden Ball - and almost certain transfer to European club champions Real Madrid - came as little surprise. On the right of the attack is Arjen Robben. nother nominee for the Golden Ball, the Bayern Munich star was electrifying in the group stage - giving the Spanish defence in particular a torrid time with two goals - and though he was better curtailed in the knockout phase, he won decisive penalties against both Mexico and Brazil with his bursts forward. In the centre is Lionel Messi, who carried Argentina through the groups single-handedly, with winning goals against Bosnia-Herzegovina, Iran and Nigeria. The Barcelona ace later set up Angel Di Maria for the winner against Switzerland and was involved in Gonzalo Higuain's goal against Belgium. Though he was ultimately unable to inspire his side to a win in the final, he still picked up the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player. On the left, we have James Rodriguez, who was the inspiration behind Colombia's vibrant displays in the finals. Six goals from an attacking midfield position is remarkable in a World Cup, but the quality of the strikes - in particular his chipped finish against Japan and outrageous swivel volley versus Uruguay - underlined his class, and sealed the Golden Boot for the Monaco star. In the lone striker role is Thomas Muller Germany's most consistent World Cup performer. The Golden Boot winner from 2010 bagged a hat-trick against Portugal and never looked back. He hit the winner against USA and proved decisive in extra-time versus Algeria before he tore the Brazil defence to shreds in the last four and delivered another tireless showing against Argentina. m.goal.com/x/en-ng/news/4957317/?page=2 |

Brazil a compilation of the bigest waste pipe's If Scolari has any pride he will resign From leaving the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Lucas Moura out of the 23-man squad, to persisting with Paulinho for far too long, to sending out sides with no semblance of a gameplan other than to give the ball to Neymar; everything has unravelled for Scolari over the last month. Scolari has reiterated time and again that the semi-final was a freak, unlucky result but he lost one of his excuses within two minutes on Saturday night. Brazil, we were told, would never have been destroyed by the Germans so brutally had captain Thiago Silva not been suspended. But the centre-back lost Arjen Robben in the opening exchanges, dragged back the Netherlands winger and conceded a penalty. 3 Likes |

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / The CAF African Footballer Of The Year Award In Numbers by sarzwizard(m): 12:18pm On Jan 09, 2014 |
As attention shifts to the plush Eko Convention Centre, Lagos, the venue of the 22nd edition of the CAF awards gala, Goal gives a numerical account of the awards’s facts and records. 1- The number of times Chad have produced a candidate for the African Footballer of the Year award. In 1996, Japhet N’Doram became the first player from the Central African country to make the top three shortlist of the award. He eventually finished as runner-up to eventual winner Victor Ikpeba. 3- Number of times the award has produced back to back winners. El Hadji Diouf of Senegal [2001-2002], Samuel Eto’o [2003-2005] and Yaya Toure [2011-2012]. 4- Samuel Eto’o of Cameroon (pictured) holds the record as the player with the highest number of wins. The Cameroonian forward first won it in 2003 when he took Austin Okocha [Nigeria] and Didier Drogba [Cote d’Ivoire] to the cleaners, before repeating same feat in 2004, 2005 and 2010. 5- This number represents the most number of consecutive nominations in the top three without a win. Michael Essien of Ghana holds this record. The Chelsea ace was first nominated in 2005 where he bowed to the duo of Samuel Eto’o and Didier Drogba. In his second attempt the following year, he was unable to get the better of Eto’o and Drogba. 2007 provided him the best opportunity to win the coveted award but narrowly lost to Frederic Kanoute of Mali. He also lost out in the 2008 and 2009 editions. 7- Since the Confederation of African Football took charge of this award, the English Premiership has produced most winners of the award. Arsenal FC was the first English side to achieve this feat when Kanu Nwankwo was crowned in 1999 and Emmanuel Adebayor [2008] while Liverpool followed the Gunners’ footstep through El Hadji Diouf [2002] before Chelsea turned out Didier Drogba [2006, 2009] then Manchester City through Yaya Toure [2011, 2012]. 9- Didier Drogba of Cote d’Ivoire holds the record for the most number of nominations for this award. In the past 10 editions [including the 2013 edition], he has made the top three shortlist nine times, winning it twice and finishing as runner up and third place on three occasions. Aside from this, nine countries have produced winners of the past 20 editions. These countries include Nigeria, Cameroon, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Liberia, Togo, Senegal, Mali and Morocco. 11- Numbers of countries that produced the top three shortlists of this award since inception in 1992. They include: Nigeria, Chad, Ghana, Morocco, Liberia, Senegal, Mali, Egypt, Cote d’Ivoire, Togo and Cameroon |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Revealed: Why Ronaldo Can't Cash In On Ballon D'or by sarzwizard(m): 11:59am On Jan 09, 2014 |
Cristiano Ronaldo has been dealt a blow ahead of next week's Ballon d'Or announcement as details emerge of a deal between Adidas - the main sponsor of Lionel Messi - and Fifa. Under the terms of the agreement, Adidas enjoys exclusive rights for the promotion of Fifa Ballon d'Or merchandise, while Nike, Ronaldo's main sponsor and that of fellow leading candidate Franck Ribery, does not possess the same privilege. It means the Real Madrid forward, who is favourite to land the prize, will be unable to make money from the award in the same manner as his great rival and current holder. "These official partnerships are the reasons why we can use the official award name within promotional activity and therefore, by the same token, why Nike could not," Ben Goldhagen, Senior PR Manager for Adidas UK and Ireland, told Goal. Adidas produced a special edition f50 boot to commemorate Messi's fourth consecutive Ballon d'Or win last January and plans are afoot for a similar campaign in spring in the event of a Messi win in the 2013 voting. "We would certainly look to repeat that approach next time around," Goldhagen said. "Messi has his own limited edition boots coming in March [regardless of the Ballon d'Or outcome]." Ronaldo and Nike, by contrast, would not be entitled to market such a Ballon d'Or-inspired boot in the event of a victory for the Portugal captain. Adidas is one of Fifa's six World Cup 'official partners' and has supplied balls and equipment for every tournament since 1970. In November, the 43-year partnership was renewed to cover all Fifa events through 2030. The previous deal was renewed in 2005 at a cost of around €30m per year. The new agreement is believed to be worth significantly more. Kicked into touch | Ronaldo can't make money from Ballon d'Or success like Messi Adidas predicts that its sales in the football category will reach record highs of €2 billion in 2014, up from a total of €1.7bn in 2012. Much of that sum will depend on Messi and his exposure in football's great untapped wilderness - America. Marketing plans for the Argentina captain could be made all the more fruitful were he to win the Ballon d'Or. The company has already launched a Messi range of clothing and footwear and the Argentina international is only the second footballer after David Beckham to have such a line tailored by Adidas. "He hasn't really been marketed in the US," the director of Adidas' North American football project, Ernesto Bruce, told the Oregonian in August. "We're going to market him as the world's best player. We think the 2014 World Cup will be historic for Messi." Nike and Fifa declined to comment.

Politics / News: Aggrieved PDP Senators To Join APC by sarzwizard(m): 4:09pm On Jan 05, 2014 |
Aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party senators said on Friday they had made up their minds to formally defect to the All Progressives Congress whenever the Senate resumed from its current Christmas/ New year holidays. They, however, said they would defect individually according to the Senate rules unlike their 37 colleagues in the House of Representatives, who defected in group last December. The senators told our correspondent in separate interviews that they would present their letters of defection one after the other, which the Senate President, David Mark, would be expected to read as personal letters. Speaking through his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Bankole Omisore, the Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said arrangements had been concluded for his formal defection when the Senate resumes. He said, “I can tell you that Senator Bukola Saraki is committed to APC. The people of Kwara, whom we represent, have endorsed the (defection) move and there is no going back.” The senator said he could not speak of other senators but maintained that it was certain that his letter of defection would be read on the floor of the Senate very soon. He said “The process to officially effect the defection has been perfected and it would be concluded once the Senate resumes in the next few weeks” Senator Shaaba Lafiagi, who told our correspondent that he was outside the country, declined comments on the issue but pledged to make his position known whenever he arrived the country. Senator Magnus Abe on his part also expressed his resolve to defect to the APC no matter the situation. He, however, said he would not disclose his strategy for defection on the pages of newspapers. Abe said, “What I have said, which I will still continue to maintain is that I am moving over to the APC but how I am going to do it and when I am going to do it are a strategy that I will keep to my chest” Other aggrieved senators who spoke on conditions of anonymity also stated their resolve to defect before the end of January. They said the threats that their seats would be declared vacant would not stand because a legal process had been instituted to address the issue. Our correspondent learnt that the Senate president was being persuaded by the leadership of the PDP and the presidency to enforce the provisions of the Senate rules by declaring the seats of the affected senators vacant.. |
