Interestingly (to me) is that for part of his childhood he lived on the same L.A. street as my grandmother. We might have crossed “paths.” Perhaps not.

The heart of this tale is that Prof.Richard de Mille, himself the guiltless player of a real life mirage, was the key who exposed the largest literary and academic fraud in history, Carlos Casteneda, using techniques of research, objective methodology, intelligence, and diligence. CAPE TOWN - Rape accused Nigerian pastor Timothy Omotoso has been denied bail in the Port Elizabeth Magistrates Court.

Omotoso has been in custody for over a month following his arrest by the Hawks on 22 charges relating to sexual offences and rape.

The Durban-based televangelist is alleged to have recruited and groomed young girls at his church for sex.

The court previously heard from Home Affairs that Omotoso was in the country illegally because one of the Nigerian's visas was apparently fraudulently obtained.

Hawks spokesperson Robert Netshiunda says the fake documents were a matter of concern.

“All six of his passports were fraudulent. If a person is in possession of travel documents and they're given bail [while] facing schedule six offences, of course, they'll try to evade trial. We are happy the court saw that and did not give him bail.”

But if con man Castaneda's early books drew knowledge on the occult, Buddhism, and phenomenology, his later work seemed more indebted to science fiction. But throughout, there was a preoccupation with meeting death like a warrior.

In the '90s, Castaneda told his followers that, like don Juan, he wouldn't die -- he'd burn from within, turn into a ball of light, and ascend to the heavens. In the summer of 1997, he was diagnosed with liver cancer.

Because genuine sorcerers weren't supposed to get sick, his illness remained a tightly guarded secret. While the witches desperately pursued traditional and alternative treatments, the workshops continued as if nothing was wrong (although Castaneda often wasn't there). The more elegant "Tensegrity" was lifted from Buckminster Fuller, for whom it referred to a structural synergy between tension and compression.

Carlos was very cruel to most followers in the compound, they'd no longer be invited to the compound. Their Phone calls wouldn't be returned. Having been allowed for a time into a secret, magical family, they'd be abruptly and cruelly cut off.

Over the next ten years, several researchers, most prominently professor Richard de Mille, son of the legendary director, worked tirelessly to demonstrate that Castaneda's work was a hoax.

In "A Separate Reality," a "man looks like a human egg of circulating fibers. And his arms and legs are like luminous bristles bursting out in all directions."
The accumulation of such instances leads de Mille to conclude that "Carlos's adventures originated not in the Sonoran desert but in the library at UCLA."

Following the publication of "The Teachings," by Carlos Casteneda thousands of deluded pilgrims descended on Yaqui territory. When they discovered that the Yaqui don't use peyote, (because unknown to them the novels were fiction but published as non fiction) but that the Huichol people do, they headed to the Huichol homeland in Southern Mexico, where, according to Fikes, they caused serious disruption in that town.

The author of a few fictional novels on Nagualism, Carlos Castaneda, who following the Time article in 1973, disappeared from the public view-- began to organize a secretive group of devoted followers. In 1973, Castaneda purchased a compound on the aptly named Pandora Avenue in Westwood.
