Godisgreatest1: Good afternoon all, please can a bungalow without pillars or columns carry a precast parapet? And also stone coated roofing sheets? Yes it can, but the question is at what cost and what bears the brunt? if you'll be using stone coated sheets and a parapet it comes highly recommended that you should have columns on your build. |

micxwell: Welldone to all the able Engineers in the house! Hakeem4, I hail you. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us all.
My laptops were stolen sometimes last year and I've been managing an old Dell laptop.
Now, I intend to buy myself a laptop and I'm trying to balance specifications and costs. Please what's the specification of the laptop you guys currently use or preferably what would you recommend for me as a design Engineer. Thanks.
PS: I intend to buy something that will be useful for me at least 3-4years from now! Screen size >=15.6inches Budget: 300-400k.
cc: sconp, feeloscar, yungmin, ubatech That's a nice budget. I'd recommend a laptop with the below specs, I consider them minimum specs and won't go below them, you can go above though. 8GB Ram 256/512 GB SSD or 1TB HDD (I prefer SSD though). 2.5 - 3.0 GHz processor speed Core i7 - 5th generation. Nvidia graphics - 2GB |

Sailor1: Just to share.... These are daily charts of majors going back to December... They tell a similar picture.... Buying the retest of the 21ema in a bull run is not necessarily a bad idea.
Of course you can have fakeouts like ada (no free lunch in this market) and they'd untimately breakdown one day...
With trading alyts, entry is everything... Having an idea of a good time to enter and exit will save you loads... Dosent need to be 100% accurate (no strategy is) but it needs to be one you can finetune to be profitable in the long run.
P.s. this is better with strong coins that have structure... With micros, it's a bit different Nice. I know the yellow line is the 21 daily ema, what's the value of the maroon coloured ema? |

n3xt: I was engaged to do a build in an estate that has a lot of restrictions on how and what can be built. On this particular build, the major challenge is height restriction. You cannot have 3 floors regardless the size of your land.
The project designer was informed about this and was asked to redesign the project to satisfy the estate’s building requirements.
This took almost 1 year of back-n-forth and revisions with the estate’s design team. It was at this point I was engaged to redesign the first floor to reflect and achieve the proposed changes.
I engaged about 2 architects here that couldn’t get the job done until I met the young lad who introduced the concept of a double volume rooms in the upper floor. He also proposed the use of steel for the proposed slabs.
We met the estate’s requirements and was also able to achieve our goals.
______
To get approval for building in this estate is harder than getting approval from Lagos state. Interesting. Reads more like the guy is an architect rather than a structural guy. Thanks for the breakdown. |

Interestingly, it’s not just money but something worth more.
________ The young lad handling my structural designs was a Unilag student when I met him and he was able to deliver what a very popular “big name” in naija construction industry could not achieve in a year within 3 weeks.
He handles 99% of my drawings since 2015. If it's not much of a hassle could you state what this is? |

hakeem4: There’s no law that restricts you for your purlin spacings. Try and increase the spacing the forces would reduce from my experience. but don’t make your purlins spacing exceed 2m from practical POV
picture is a roof truss I design with 25m span. Purlins spacing of 2m Nice I will try that. Though at the moment 2L80x80x10 is able to take care of it. |

hakeem4: sconp did the architect restrict your truss depth? can you reconfigure your truss members so you do not have too many struts and ties? Yes he did, though he has said I can go as high as 2m now. The struts spacing are to coincide with the purlins, max spacing 1.5m |

yungmin: Bro, that section is still quite small. I did a 40m span mansard truss sometime ago. The sizes I got for both top and bottom chords where L200x200x16. You know if you are to use parallel chord truss for this problem, your span/depth ratio should be in the range of 15 to 25. In other words, you need a minimum of 2meters depth of the truss. In the analysis I did for this, the lowest section I could get was L150x150x15. I intend using span/depth ratio of 10-15 for the parallel chord truss I would do. What did you end up using for the mansard you did? sconp: Can a 75x75x6 double angle section replace a 150x150x10 single angle section theoretically? This was the question I was referring to though. cc: yungmin hakeem4: Copy the command file and paste it here on NL I tried to post the command file but NL said it was too long. I have attached the model. I stripped it bare, no wind load. Loads were applied on the purlins, I have another model where I applied the loads nodally and that was the one that gave the least section(L150x150x15) I have gotten so far Thanks |

yungmin: Check the span / depth ratio to be very sure it is correct. Otherwise the members would continue to be very heavy. Pls reference truss design in the steel designers manual. Also explore portal frame system as suggested by @Hakeem. Thanks, yes I am referencing SDM. I'll appreciate if you can do justice to that question above on single and double angle sections. hakeem4: sconp can you send me your model let me try I'll do that thanks. |

yungmin: Why not change it to I or H beam? And also, try double angle or Channel section. And above all, I hope you used the required height for the truss? And more so, what type of truss? You should use a parallel chord truss for that span. Can't use a H-Beam. I intend to use a double angle section like you posited. The truss is a sort of combination between warren and Pratt, see attached diagram (450mm and 1500mm). I would change truss type to parallel chord with required height and get back to you. Can a 75x75x6 double angle section replace a 150x150x10 single angle section theoretically? Doesn't seem to work that way on staad or I am probably not doing it right. Thanks. hakeem4: use back to back angle (double angle) as yungmin suggested. Must it be a truss? Why don’t you try portal frame or linto roof style I intend to switch to portal frame as a last resort if I can't figure the truss out, someone who doesn't use staad thinks it's possible to get something far lower. |
