To be on a safer side, download manually from MiUi site, with this you can re-run the update incase of any mishaps.
Make sure you also do important backups, never carry over system apps backup, do only for third party apps.
Sync your contacts, messages and notes with your MiCloud account; it's easier to restore from here.

To your 2nd question, I think you should be able to. I am not using Max 2, so I can't say much. But on my Redmi Note 4 Snapdragon I can apply themes and change fonts on MiUi 9.

Finally updated to MIUI 9, everything went smoothly didn't loose a single file until I went ahead and factory reset angry

.
Later found out some of the apps didn't backup well embarassed

So far, battery is going on well. I think I noticed whatsapp's double notification. Will update on any new findings later.

Something must be wrong with your rom then. Maybe the latest rom update have some compatibility issue.
I have been using this app for months no qualms atall.
