Medical Laboratory Scientists do Call duty. Blood banking is a 24hours affair. You are on your toes everyday. Emergency STAT (Very urgent) samples are sent to the Chemical pathology lab everyday.

Go to every Teaching hospital, even interns do calls. Take their bath in the call rooms and continue their jobs in the following morning together with others.

1. Firstly, Medical Lab Scientist and Nurses spend 5 years +/- internship in the medical training, they are astute medical professionals in there own right and respected world over.. Lab Techs (Medical Lab Technician) are associate/diploma holders and also professionals in their own cadre.

2. There are travel nurses and medical scientists who earn as high as $290,000- $500,000 per annum. These are specialists and consultants, some with Pg.D, M.Sc and PhDs in their field of expertise. This is far higher than what some physicians earn in some specialities..

3. Many Nigerian Medical Scientists and Nurses are leaving in droves to the US. Some are getting jobs right from here in Nigeria after writing licensure exams like ASCP, HCPC, CORU and AIMS and doing virtual interviews.

Nigerian Medical Lab Science Council (MLSCN) opened their register last week and showed the world that more than 10,000 Medical scientists have left the country in the past two years for the US, the UK, Ireland, Canada etc. Unemployment rate for Medical Lab Scientists in the US is less than 1% or thereabout. Their baby boomers in the profession are retiring at an exponential rate, and the replacement is not as fast. You can't process international licensure and Visa screen as a Medical Laboratory Scientist without the MLSCN documentation. So they have proper data.


4. Let me shock you- The current World Health Organisation (WHO) president Dr. Tedoros Gebreyesus is a medical laboratory professional with a PhD, he is not a Physician but a Scientist. His previous professional knowledge as a medical laboratorian helped him to lead from the front in the fight against COVID-19 and defeat it. Just like HIV, TB etc, that disease was defeated in the medical laboratory.

When you are done with MLS, start evaluating your degree WES, while your brain is still hot, write and pass the ASCP exam for American MLS professionals (can be written in Nigeria), get your visascreen and start applying for jobs on Indeed, LinkedIn and Vivian, glassdoor. You will find employees who will hire you and sponsor your H1b visa if you are good enough. In a few months, you are likely to be in the United States after that.

The process is long (12-18 months), so I'll advise you to start preparing to write the ASCP exam (generalist) during your internship. By the time you are done with NYSC, you could be on your way out. If you fail ASCP five times, you are out.
