THE SAKER:

When I first heard that a coup was in progress in Turkey my first thought was that it was the USA’s way to punish Erdogan for his sudden apology to Russia. Yes, sure, I realized that there were many other possible explanations, but that was the one I was hoping for. I even told my family that if this was a US-backed coup and if Erdogan or his supporters said so, there would be hell to pay for the USA. Less than 24 hour later my hopes were fulfilled:

Kerry Blasts Turkey for Insinuating that Washington Plotted Coup of Erdogan

Erdogan was undeterred and he went on to publicly declare:

Dear President Obama, I told you this before, arrest Fethullah Gulen or return him to Turkey. You didn’t listen. I call you on you again, after the coup attempt – extradite this man from Pennsylvania to Turkey. If we are strategic partners, do what is necessary,”

He also explicitly called any nation supporting Gulen “an open enemy of Turkey.”

Now we need to remember that Erdogan has a history of zigs followed by zags, so I would not put it past him to warmly embrace Obama in the near future, but I find that unlikely. Why? Simply because there is a lot of indirect evidence that the USA was, indeed, behind this coup. Consider this:

The coup involved a very large number of people. We can get a sense of the magnitude of this coup by looking at the huge purge now taking place in Turkey. According to various sources it includes no less than 6,000 people, many senior officers (including 5 generals and 29 colonels), 2’745 judges and prosecutors. So the first thing we need to ask ourselves is how likely is it that the USA did not know what was being prepared by the coup plotters?

I submit that in a country essentially at war, where US forces which are involved in combat operations in nearby Syria and Iraq are deployed and where the US reportedly keeps 50 tactical nuclear weapons, the notion that the USA did not see this coming is far fetched. Turkey is a NATO member state, which in practical terms means that the US has full control over the Turkish military, and we know thanks to Sibel Edmonds that the Turkish deep state has very close ties to the US deep state – and we are to believe that nobody in the USA saw this coming?

Furthermore, when Erdogan says that the USA did not hurry to condemn the coup, he is absolutely correct. In fact, it was rather amusing for me to see that all the western media was indicating that the coup had succeeded, while the Iranians and Russians reported that the coup had failed. If that was case of wishful thinking on both sides, what does it tell us about the wishes?

Now let’s look at the cui bono angle.

Some, including Fethullah Gulen, have suggested that this coup was an a false flag operation by Erdogan himself. And it is true that he declared that this coup was a “gift from God… because this will be a reason to cleanse our army”. But the reality is that this coup is a huge embarrassment for Erdogan who had already purged the Turkish armed forces many times over and who could not take the risk of having a planned “false flag” turn into the real thing: even General Bekir Ercan Van, the commander of Turkey’s Incirlik airbase, has been detained by Turkish authorities accused of complicity in the attempted coup. So not only did this coup show that Erdogan was hated at the very top level of the Turkish armed forces, but the failure of the coup has now resulted in a huge purge which will tremendously weaken the Turkish armed forces who are involved not only in Syria but also in a bloody civil war against the Kurds. So the notion that Erdogan triggered this coup himself appears very far fetched to me.

Then, of course, there is Russia. And while I wholeheartedly agree that Russia will immensely benefit from this failed coup, I also am convinced that the Russians never had anywhere near the means needed to trigger a coup in Turkey. Neither the Kemalists nor the supporters of Gulen are pro-Russian and Russia simply does not have the kind of access in this major NATO country to trigger military coups.

As for the USA, had the coup succeeded, they could have placed a compliant, and probably far more reliable, military leader at the helm of power in Turkey. Now that the coup failed and now that Erdogan appears to be furious at the USA, the USA is the big loser in this outcome. But had the coup succeeded?

Keep in mind that the war in 08.08.08 and the case of the US “multiple personality disorder” over Syria have shown that there is no unified US foreign policy. There is a White House foreign policy, there is a CIA foreign policy, then there is a Foggy Bottom foreign policy and a Pentagon foreign policy. We even know that there is a separate Neocon foreign policy. Any one of them could have pushed the coup plotters to take action just like the Neocons pushed Saakashvili to attacked South Ossetia.

Now that the coup has failed, however, the situation has the potential to strongly turned in Russia’s favor and even though the Russians will never trust Erdogan, they are also fully aware of the objective advantages Russian can reap from the current situation. The ultimate success would be to trigger a withdrawal of Turkey from NATO, but I personally doubt that this is possible. A more realistic goal could be to accept that Turkey will nominally remain in NATO, but that at least in Syria Erdogan will accept the Russian-created reality on the ground. The fact that Lavrov and Kerry have agreed to a joint long-term ceasefire whose exact terms are to remain secret indicates to me that the Russians forced the US into concessions which the latter don’t want to be made public (and not the other way around because Moscow holds all the cards now and Kerry has therefore no means to put pressure on Russia). In other words, now that even the USA has basically caved in, at least temporarily, the Turks have no reasons left to try to impose anything on Syria.

The current situation holds a tremendous potential for developments favorable to Russia. I hope that the Russians will apply some creative thinking and make maximal use of this new situation to create a fait accompli on the ground in Syria. The best option for Russia would be to have a reliable and predictable partner in Turkey. Alas, this is not going to happen. The next best option is to have a weak Turkey wasting most of its resources and energy dealing with internal crises. This seems to be what will happen in the foreseeable future. By any measure, this is a good thing for Russia, Syria and, really, the entire region.

For the Russian crew manning a S-400 unit, they will be very lucky if US naval units don't target their position with cruise missiles or that US air forces don't launch standoff weapons at them if they engage or even hit US/NATO aircraft. The S-400 is not a rapid deployment weapon meaning that "shoot and scoots" are not possible. The unit will be near where it launched after its does and that will prove fatal for the crew involved.

You are correct to an extent. There is no way the Turkish military will launch a coup without US support considering the amount of military assets they have in that country.

However I do not think it has anything to do with Russia. Erdogan became a problem for the US and other western states with his heavy handedness, poor human rights record and support for ISIS.

NATO leaders were motified when he shot down a Russian jet.

Obama actually gave him the cold shoulder the last time he visited the US and refused to meet with him.

He had intelligence briefings about this coup and the Western involvement hence the desperate attempt to woo Putin.

FBI Director James Comey justified his decision to not recommend charges against the former Secretary of State, at a congressional hearing this week, over her alleged mishandling classified documents by appealing to the fact that she was too stupid to fathomably have the requisite criminal intent.

There is a general rule among attorneys who practice white-collar law – most defendants are guilty, but some are simply too dumb to realize they did anything wrong with the phrase “criminally stupid” applied to this group by their own lawyers. Prosecutors traditionally have mercy on this type of defendant and based on FBI Director James Comey’s testimony before Congress, it seems Hillary’s "get out of jail free" card may not have been her corrupt cronyism, but apparently just sheer idiocy.

The Case to Indict Hillary Was Ironclad


Comey rattled the world for 14 minutes on Tuesday morning laying out the elements of the case against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton establishing each element of the crime that she was charged with in perfect legalese leaving viewers to just wait for him to utter those final words that the agency would recommend prosecution to the Department of Justice, but the suddenly the unthinkable happened – the recommendation to prosecute despite “evidence of potential violations of the statutes” never came.

In his speech, Comey confirmed that Hillary Clinton sent or received 110 documents that were classified at the time of transmission from her private email with the contents guarded by a "homebrew" private server with less security protection than a commercial system like Gmail.

He further determined that "no reasonable person" would believe that the private server was an appropriate place to house classified documents which she "knew or should have known" she would receive on her system.

Comey further laid out the fact that several of the documents contained HUMINT and SIGINT, information that was acquired by CIA analysts who often imperiled their own lives in order to obtain the information that the former Secretary of State dangled out in front of hostile foreign actors like a piece of meat.


It has further been determined that Hillary Clinton’s emails contained the identities of at least 47 undercover CIA personnel operating in posts around the world and that her system was likely hacked on several occasions due to not only her private email server, but also exposing information abroad by using a Blackberry while in foreign countries to access her email system.

Of course, any evidence that Hillary Clinton’s system was hacked was destroyed by her staff and attorneys who attempted, for the most part unsuccessfully, to wipe the server clean of any indictable evidence although as we know from testimony by lead aide Huma Abedin she used the server to circumvent federal Freedom of Information Act legal requirements to preserve and provide work-related emails and we also know that her email system was taken offline on at least one occasion when the system was subject to a potential security breach.

Comey Changed the Statute to Justify the Decision

Comey characterized Hillary’s mishandling of classified information as "extreme carelessness," a synonym for the term gross negligence but with the FBI Director requiring an even higher level of intent, known as criminal intent or purposefully engaging in an unlawful act, which was not actually required by the statute.



This stands in stark contradiction of the very first cannon of statutory construction, as was adopted by the Supreme Court in Caminetti v. United States, 242 US 470 (1917) that law enforcement and judicial officers are not to try to read beyond the language of a statute if its language is plainly stated.

"It is elementary that the meaning of a statute must, in the first instance, be sought in the language in which the act is framed, and if that is plain then the sole function of the courts is to enforce it according to its terms," said Justice William Day writing for the majority.

The Court further warned that "the duty of interpretation does not arise, and the rules which are to aid doubtful meanings need no discussion [if the statutory language is clear]."

There was no internal contradiction in the statute, but Comey read an added intent element into it anyways befuddling a questioning American public and a Republican-led Congress that was at its wits end to hear that the FBI Director had laid out every piece of the case in an unusually transparent way, but decided against prosecuting anyways.

Hillary’s congressional opposition astutely pointed to the fact that even if we should adopt Comey’s belief that criminal intent should be implied into the statute, that even if Hillary did not mean to mishandle classified information she certainly did intend to circumvent Freedom of Information Act laws and as such knew that her underlying actions were not lawful satisfying that requirement.

Clinton Deemed too "Unsophisticated" to Pursue Charges Against


It was at this point that Comey exposed what this case was really about – Hillary was indeed a would-be defendant who was so criminally stupid, bordering on complete incompetence, that it just didn’t seem right to waste taxpayer dollars to whack her with an indictment. She was not the devious, plotting Lady MacBeth that the American people imagined, but rather the person who tells you to "shut the door because you are letting the wi-fi escape from the room" as a popular meme suggests.

The FBI Director said that while he initially approached the case believing that an attorney who had partaken in the Watergate investigation and who had served as both First Lady and a US Senator prior to taking office as Secretary of State should have a basic understanding of maintaining confidential information, but he proceeded to tell the American people that a "c" with brackets around it indicating that a file was classified was too high-level for Hillary Clinton to figure out.

He also explained at several junctures that Secretary Clinton is either “not as sophisticated as the American people would believe” or is "unsophisticated."

After spending billions of dollars, the US government is having trouble getting its state-of-the-art homeland missile defense system to function according to plan, and it’s driven the Pentagon to lie about the program’s success rate.

On January 28, the Pentagon’s Missile Defense Agency conducted the first test flight of new so-called divert thrusters, to be used on anti-missile interceptors. A military statement deemed this a "successful test flight," claiming the thrusters allowed the interceptors to stop a mock warhead.


"On this flight, we validated key design improvements in the divert and attitude control system, demonstrating improved performance, reliability and productibility," said Michael Bright of Aerojet Rocketdyne, maker of the thrusters, in a statement.

"The overall goal of the Missile Defense Agency is to make a more capable and reliable system, and this successful test demonstrated significant progress toward reaching that goal."

According to the Los Angeles Times, however, these claims were falsified. During the test, one of the thrusters failed. This caused the interceptor to lose control and the mock missile to slip through the defense shield.


"The mission wasn’t successful," a project scientist, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the LA Times. "Did the thruster perform as expected? No, it did not provide the control necessary for a lethal impact of an incoming threat."

A second scientist said that claims of success were "hyperbole, unsupported by any test data."

Other engineers indicated that the faulty thrusters caused the interceptor to miss its target by "a distance 20 times greater than what was expected," the LA Times reported.

The program, known as Ground-Based Midcourse Defense (GMD), has cost US taxpayers over $40 billion since 2004. It was designed as a means to prevent a potential nuclear attack, and involves 30 interceptors that can be launched from various terrestrial locations across the United States.

The thrusters have come under scrutiny before. Two unsuccessful tests in 2010 were attributed to the component, and ultimately led to the creation of the latest model. An earlier test of the new thrusters occurred in 2013 and resulted in failure.


According to a report from the US Government Accountability Office, these failures were the result of rushed engineering work and "omitting steps in the design process."

When asked for comment by the LA Times, the Missile Defense Agency acknowledged that problems had occurred during the "successful" test.

"There was an observation unrelated to the new thruster hardware that has been investigated and successfully root-caused," the agency said. "Any necessary corrective actions will be taken for the next flight test."

The agency maintained that “the new thrusters performed as designed” and within "critical performance parameters."

Alton Sterling, known as the "CD Man" was shot to death by police outside the Triple-S convenience store on North Foster Drive and Fairfields Avenue. The coroner confirmed the cause of death later on Tuesday after an autopsy was performed on Sterling's remain.

Police say they responded to an anonymous call around 12:30 a.m. about a man selling CDs who also had a gun on him. When police arrived, Sterling and officers got into an altercation. One officer shot and killed Sterling.

The store's owner Abdul Muflahi said he was just a few feet away when he watched the shooting happen. He said at first Sterling and the officers were arguing. Then he said he saw the officers wrestle with Sterling against a car, throw him to the ground, and tase him in order to subdue him and shot him four to six times.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is the most advanced aircraft in the Pentagon's arsenal, but Russia's powerful over-the-horizon Podsolnukh (Sunflower) radar is capable of detecting and tracking the stealth fifth-generation plane or any other fighter jet that was designed to avoid detection, Svobodnaya Pressa reported.


The Podsolnukh short-range over-the-horizon surface-wave radar is developed by Moscow-based OJSC NPK NIIDAR. The Russian Defense Ministry plans to deploy several of these systems in the Arctic, as well as on Russia's southern and western borders.
The radar is capable of detecting sea surface and air objects at a maximum distance of 500 kilometers (over 310 miles) at different altitudes in line of sight and over the horizon. The Podsolnukh "can simultaneously detect, track and classify up top 300 sea and 100 aerial targets in an automatic mode," the Global Security website detailed.

There is an additional advantage that this type of radars brings to the table. "Short-wave stations see stealth fighter jets as clearly as WWII-era aircraft," Svobodnaya Pressa observed, referring to cutting-edge planes that have been created to avoid detection by radars or sonars, like the F-35.


The Podsolnukh has more to offer. The system could be put online in ten days and needs a team of just three people to stay operational, the media outlet explained. It does not need much power, it is easy to operate and it does not have much equipment. The radar stations have to be placed 370 kilometers apart to receive complete coverage.
Sea- and shore-based OTHR systems are becoming increasingly popular in coastal nations, who want to protect their exclusive economic zones from piracy, smuggling and illegal fishing. They also have military application. The radars could are capable of issuing alerts in case of an invasion or subversive activity.
