The wars of the future will rely heavily on electronic targeting capabilities. The US Navy, in particular, will rely on sophisticated communication networks to coordinate missile strikes. Unfortunately, lax technology could leave Washington’s fleet dead in the water.

Historically, smaller naval ships have been used to escort larger vessels, such as aircraft carriers. This strategy presents a united front, and is easy for enemy forces to spot and target.


For potential future global conflicts, the US Navy has adjusted its strategy. Known as "distributed lethality" the Pentagon hopes to use smaller warships in a more scattered array. Dispersing across a wider area, smaller naval vessels could focus long-range missile attacks on a single target without that target being sure where the next attack will come from.

This kind of tactic requires advanced electronic communications capabilities. When covering such large distances, all ships within the fleet would need to have instant data-sharing capabilities, as well as with intelligence satellites and targeting aircraft.

The Pentagon is concerned that networking systems are highly vulnerable. One swift electronic attack could leave the entire fleet offline and adrift.

"It’s a huge priority," US Representative Randy Forbes, House seapower subcommittee chairman, told Breaking Defense. "It’s not just the Pentagon that’s concerned about losing our advantage [in electronic warfare].

In an interview with RT, political analyst Bassam Tahhan said that Saudi Arabia and the other countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council are trying to force down oil prices in order to harm Iran and a number of other oil-producing countries, including Russia.

"A secret war is being waged by Saudi Arabia and Gulf Cooperation Council states which are slashing oil prices so as to strangle Iran, Russia, Algeria and Venezuela, as well as the entire 'anti-American' axis created by these countries," Tahhan said.

He explained that all those countries had refused to adhere to Washington's demands with regard to Ukraine, Syria and Yemen.


According to Tahhan, the oil spat between Riyadh and Tehran is unlikely to lead to a war, given Iran's military potential and the sheer territory of the country.


What's more, he said, Saudi Arabia will fail to prod the UN or the West to issue a resolution to condemn Iran and authorize invasion of the country.

Rather, Saudi Arabia itself may be attacked by Iran's allies, such as Yemen, a scenario that Tahhan said may see Saudi oil fields destroyed and oil prices rise.


At the same time, he noted that the United States is unlikely to say "no" to the war between Saudi Arabia and Iran, because Washington could supply arms to both parties to the conflict.

Earlier this month, international business analyst Ralph Winnie revealed that Saudi Arabia has dropped its oil prices to try and wreck the Iranian economy and keep Tehran's oil exports out of major European markets.

"The Saudis are looking to gain a competitive advantage: this is a response to the lifting of Western economic sanctions on Iran, which allow the Iranians to reenter the global energy marketplace," he said.


His remarks came after the Saudi oil giant Aramco announced that it would cut oil prices for Europe, apparently in preparation for Iran's resumption of oil exports to the region later this year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin "probably" approved the assassination of ex-KGB agent turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko in London in 2006, a public UK inquiry has found.


Sir Robert Owen said on Thursday it was likely the Russian leader signed off the killing of the former spy following a long-running feud.

His 300-page report said Andrei Lugovoi and Dmitri Kovtun were probably acting under the direction of Moscow's FSB intelligence service when they poisoned the 43-year-old with radioactive polonium 210 at London's Millennium Hotel in Mayfair.

Singling out then-FSB chief Nikolai Patrushev alongside Putin, he wrote: "Taking full account of all the evidence and analysis available to me I find that the FSB operation to kill Litvinenko was probably approved by Mr Patrushev and also by President Putin."

Litvinenko, a Russian spy turned dissident who lived in exile in Britain, died in November 2006 three weeks after drinking green tea laced with radioactive polonium-210 at London's plush Millennium Hotel.

From his deathbed, the 43-year-old told detectives that Russian President Vladimir Putin had directly ordered his killing.

The Kremlin dismissed that claim as ridiculous at the time and has always denied involvement.

British police had accused Kovtun and Lugovoi, the two Russians Litvinenko met for tea, of carrying out the killing. Both deny involvement, and Moscow refuses to extradite them.

Poisoned to death

The inquiry heard from 62 witnesses over six months of public hearings and - behind closed doors - saw secret intelligence evidence about Litvinenko and his links to UK spy agencies.

Litvinenko's widow Marina told the inquiry that her husband was a loyal intelligence agent who grew disillusioned with Russia's 1990s war in Chechnya and by what he saw as corruption within the FSB security service, the successor to the KGB.

He fled to Britain in 2000 and was granted asylum, becoming an outspoken critic of Putin and his allies.

When he became violently ill in November 2006, Litvinenko's doctors initially diagnosed him with a stomach infection.

But as his condition worsened, his white blood cell count plummeted, making him susceptible to infection.

"His skin had turned yellow, indicating liver dysfunction, and he was tested for the two most likely causes, hepatitis and Aids, but neither was the case," John Emsley wrote in Molecules of Murder, a crime book that includes a chapter on polonium poisoning. "Then his hair began to fall out."

Doctors eventually decided that Litvinenko was suffering from radiation poisoning, and further tests identified polonium as the culprit.

Litvinenko's body was so radioactive that the autopsy was conducted by medics in protective clothing and ventilation hoods. A lawyer for the police said that the killing may have exposed hundreds or even thousands of Londoners to radioactive contamination.

British detectives and scientists told the inquiry that a radioactive trail was left at hotels, restaurants and other sites across London visited by Kovtun and Lugovoi, a former agent for the FSB security service who is now a Russian politician and was decorated by Putin for services to the nation.

Tense relations

Litvinenko's death marked a post-Cold War low point in Anglo-Russian relations, and ties have never fully recovered. They were marred further in more recent years by Russia's annexation of Crimea and its support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

British newspapers said Prime Minister David Cameron would chair a meeting of security chiefs before publication of the report to consider what, if any, action Britain should take.

gor Sutyagin, from the UK's Royal United Service Institute think-tank, told the Reuters news agency that he expected that Britain would consider the report itself as sending out a message to the Kremlin.

"Everything which blames or is seen as an accusation against Russia is perceived in a very personal way by Vladimir Putin," he said. "He will react in a very angry way which will not help to improve relations with the UK."

But some believe it may be in the interests of both Britain and Russia to limit the fallout from the Litvinenko killing.

The two countries are both involved in air strikes against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). British diplomats believe Russia is key to ending that country's civil war, while Russia, whose economy is hurt by low oil prices, would like to see an end to sanctions.

To be honest the statement is very true and the reason for this is simple. Iran’s Islamic Revolution Guards Corps says it has held two US naval boats after they entered the country’s territorial waters in the Persian Gulf.

The IRGC says the American vessels were stopped near Iran’s Farsi island in the Persian Gulf and were transferred to the island. It says the sailors are in good health and are being kept at a suitable place. The Pentagon says Washington has received assurances from officials in Tehran that the vessels and the sailors will be released soon. The White House also expressed optimism and said it was working to resolve the situation and get the personnel returned. US officials also said Secretary of State John Kerry called his Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zarif over the incident.

UPDATED: Why We Donated Dumped 24 Mine-Resistant Vehicles To Nigeria’s Military —US

THE United States Government, on Thursday, said it donated 24 Mine-Resistant Armour-Protected (MRAP) vehicles valued at $11 million to Nigeria’s military authorities as part of continuing support from the United States to the government and the people of Nigeria to defeat Boko Haram.
It said the vehicles provided increased protection from improvised explosive devices, roadside bombs, and small arms fire, while offering more manoeuvrability and better fuel economy than other types of armoured personnel carriers.
US Defence Attaché to Nigeria, Colonel Patrick Doyle, in a statement issued by the US Embassy in Abuja, said the US government donated the armoured vehicles through the Excess Defence Articles Programme.
He said the Nigerian military arranged for transportation of the vehicles from the port to Lagos.
According to him, Nigeria is in the process of receiving additional eight MRAPs through the same programme, valued at approximately $7.4 million.
He stated that the Excess Defence Articles Programme was designed to transfer excess military equipment from the United States to foreign governments or international organisations to help with modernisation of partner nation military capabilities.
“Through a similar programme, the U.S. Government donated to the Nigerian Navy the NNS Okpabana in 2014 and NNS Thunder in 2012. The two ships have bolstered maritime security in Nigeria,” he said.
Doyle noted that the latest armoured equipment donation represented part of the continuing US commitment to Nigeria and its neighbours to counter Boko Haram’s senseless acts of terror and promote regional security.
He said the United States provides advisors, intelligence, training, logistical support, and equipment to our African partners as they work to defeat Boko Haram.
He said, “We also support those affected by Boko Haram’s violence through ongoing humanitarian aid and victim support services.
“The United States will continue working with our partners in the region to identify new opportunities to restore order in the Lake Chad Basin region.”
Major General B Ndiomu, who represented the Chief of Defence Staff, during the handing over of the vehicles, commended the US government for its supports to Nigeria.
The army chief expressed his confidence that the armoured vehicles would help protect Nigerian soldiers from attacks from Improvised Explosive Devices of the terror member.
He also added that the armoured vehicles would help the Nigerian military to access some rough terrains in the war front and urged the US to assist Nigeria with the provision of spare parts for the vehicles.
A top military officer, who spoke with the Nigerian Tribune, under the condition of anonymity, described the new armoured vehicles as “a new inventory in the Nigerian Army.”
