Education / 10 American Colleges Where Tuition Is Free by Azeemokoya: 12:04pm On Nov 17, 2016
You might think there’s no escaping the high—and still rising—cost of college. But at some schools, the cost of tuition rings up as zilch, zero, nada. These ten colleges across the country offer free tuition. At many of the schools, students work a set number of hours in a student work program or, in the case of the military academies, commit to a period of service after graduating.

Not surprisingly, the savings for families is significant. During the 2015–16 academic year, the average annual sticker price for tuition and fees for in-state students attending a four-year public college was $9,410, according to the College Board. Meanwhile, the average annual cost of tuition and fees for out-of-state students at a four-year public college was $23,893. Private colleges were even pricier, at an average total cost of $32,405.

Although the schools listed here are tuition-free in most cases, students and their families are expected to pay for required fees, room and board, and books. Financial aid is often available to help defray those costs.

COLLEGE NUMBER ONE

ALICE LLOYD COLLEGE

Location: Pippa Passes, Ky.

Undergraduate enrollment: 616

At this small liberal-arts college, located in a Kentucky town named after a Robert Browning poem, students from much of Central Appalachia won’t pay tuition regardless of their family’s financial situation. Instead, all full-time students are required to work at least 10 hours each week as part of the requirements for graduating. Across the school’s 225-acre campus, students fill a variety of roles, from receptionists and computer technicians to lifeguards and groundskeepers.

Students from the school’s 108-county service area, which spans portions of Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, virginia and West virginia, can expect to spend about $9,590 a year on required fees, room and board, and books. Additional financial aid is available; some students work extra hours to cover non-tuition costs. When they aren’t attending class or working on campus, they can explore the nearby Daniel Boone National Forest and Kingdom Come State Park.

COLLEGE NUMBER 2

BARCLAY COLLEGE

Location: Haviland, Kan.

Undergraduate enrollment: 292

This Bible-centric college on the prairie was founded by Quakers in 1917. Today the school admits students from all evangelical faiths. Barclay’s degree programs are mostly religious—majors include worship arts, youth ministry and missions work—but the school also offers majors in business administration, elementary education, and psychology and family studies.

Barclay’s 20-acre campus spans six blocks in central Kansas. All full-time students who live on campus receive a full-tuition scholarship of $12,500 per year. Students may also receive other scholarships and need-based financial aid to help cover the additional $12,490 annual cost of fees, room and board, and books.

COLLEGE NUMBER 3

BEREA COLLEGE

Location: Berea, Ky.

Undergraduate enrollment: 1,643

In 2016, Berea College ranked number 93 on Kiplinger’s overall list of 300 best value colleges—thanks in part to its full-tuition scholarship. It also has the lowest average student debt at graduation of all 300 schools on our best values list. Berea was founded by abolitionists and other reformers in 1855 and admits only students with financial need. The school’s sticker price for room and board, required fees and books after the full-tuition scholarship is $7,742 for the 2016–17 academic year.

Located 35 miles south of Lexington, Ky., Berea offers 32 academic majors in the arts, sciences and some professional programs. All Berea students receive the tuition scholarship, which amounts to nearly $100,000 over four years. They are required to work 10 to 15 hours per week on campus while carrying a full academic load. The average family income for a Berea student is $28,652. Additional financial aid is available for students who need help with living expenses, such as housing; among students who borrow, the average debt at graduation is a slim $7,928.

Education / Snake Killed By A Nairalander In His House Today by reechest: 5:49pm On Oct 25, 2016
Noticed a stealth movement on one of the Citrus tree in my house today. I was curious, lo and behold, it was a long slim green creature well masked with the surrounding foliage. Gave my daughter and mum in law some scare. What do I do with the stuff now? Pictures attached The smooth greensnake (Opheodrys vernalis) is a nonvenomous North American colubrid. It is also referred to as the grass snake. It is a slender, "small medium" snake that measures 36–51 cm (14–20 in) as an adult. It gets its common name from its smooth dorsal scales, as opposed to the rough green snake, which has keeled dorsal scales. It is found in marshes, meadows, open woods, and along stream edges and is native to regions of Canada, Maine, Wisconsin, Illinois, virginia,Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Iowa, Missouri,Colorado, Texas, Michigan and northernMexico. A non-aggressive snake, it seldom bites and usually flees when threatened. It mates in late spring to summer and females lay their eggs from June to September.

Salisbury School
At more than $49,000 a year, Salisbury School dethroned The Lawrenceville School as the most expensive this year.Facebook/salisburyschool (Graham Turner '15)

From sophisticated study-abroad programs to state-of-the-art facilities, students at the most expensive private schools in the country enjoy opportunities that would make most people — adults included — jealous.

This is the fifth year that we have created a list of the 50 most expensive private schools in America. As in past years, school tuitions across the board have risen.

For the first time, The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey, was not the most expensive on our list, but instead was overtaken by another northeastern school: the Salisbury School in Connecticut.

We ranked the private high schools on our list by looking at tuitions and fees for the 2015 to 2016 year as listed on the schools' websites, including one-time fees, where applicable. Where a range was given for books and supplies, we factored in the average cost, and calculated the total cost of attendance for the school. We did not include special-needs or boarding-only schools on this list.

A succubus is just like an incubus, except a succubus is female. Succubi are cleverer than incubi, though, and can make themselves appear in human form and tempt men into having sex, rather than just straight-up attacking them. But they can also lead men to eternal damnation, so if you’re considering sleeping with a succubus, maybe don’t?

Education / 7 Reasons Why You Need To Read By Olawade David B. by masterpiecedavid(m): 1:12pm On Sep 15, 2016
7 REASONS WHY YOU NEED TO READ BY OLAWADE DAVID B.
“I can’t write without a reader. It’s like a kiss- you can’t do it alone”- JOHN CHEEVER

I have come to realize how passionate I am about writing. This zeal is driving me day by day. Many might be surprised or offended with my daily broadcasts on social media. I will be sharing with all and sundry on this article the reasons why we need to read.

I am a ‘writing drunkard’. Writing has the same irresistible temptation for me like liquor has for its devotee.

“Readers are not sheep, and not every pen tempts them”- VLADIMIR NABOKOV

I sincerely appreciate everyone who has been reading and following our posts. Who am I to take your time? Thank you for trusting my write ups and pieces.

“Reading is not a gift, it is a choice made by wise men”- ANONYMOUS.

No man is born a reader. Reading is a product of choice geared by conscious commitment. I have overheard people say; “I don’t like reading” or “I don’t have the gift of reading”.

Why do you need to read?

TO GAIN EASILY WHAT OTHERS HAVE LABOURED HARD FOR

“Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings, so that you shall gain easily what others have laboured hard for”- SOCRATES

There are words, experiences, excerpts and stories that are summarized in books and articles that would have cost you more than the commitment you make in reading a particle piece at your disposal.
It is important to know that every writer spend more time to put their write ups together that the time you engage to read them.

TO FIND WORDS FOR WHAT WE ALREADY KNOW
“May be this is why we read, and why in moments of darkness, we return to books: to find words for what we already know”- ALBERTO MANGUEL

Many of the words and expressions we find in books and articles are things we might have known but when we read, we are reminded of them. We get the realities and applications of what we already know by reading the write ups of writers.
Often time, when I come across the write ups of other authors, I see them write my thoughts but I see it in another dimension through them and emphasis on what I already know is made. A man can always learn from what he already knows through another man.

TO TRANSFORM THE PAST INTO KNOWLEDGE MADE APPLICABLE TO THE PRESENT
“When a reader enters the pages of a book of poetry, he or she enters the world where dreams transform the past into knowledge made applicable to the present and where visions shape the present into extraordinary possibilities for the future”- ABERJHANI

Reading makes us transform our past knowledge to application for the present and gives us possibilities for the future. Every reader has an answer to his present situations and solutions to their future challenges.

TO KNOW THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE
“The time you spend reading is the time you spend fellowshipping with the one who wrote the books”- DAG HEWARD MILLS.

Why do men complain about being bored? Why do you feel lonely? I have realized books are one of the greatest companions a man can have. That moment you feel bored and desire to relate with someone, get the books, materials, articles and write ups.
Someone is always waiting to keep your company through their writings. As a writer, I Have discovered over time that the best way to share my time with all and sundry is by sharing my thoughts in writing everyone to read.

TO GET INSPIRATION IN THE TIME OF NEED
“It is what you read when you don’t have to that determines what you will be when you can’t help it”- OSCAR WILDE

We all get to cross roads when we need to make decisions on daily basis. We can always get the bearings for the cross roads from the inspirations and motivations we have acquired from the books we have read over time.
Any man that despises reading is in a long run despising help in the time of need. Don’t be stranded, engage the act of reading.

TO OVERCOME MOMENTARY IGNORANCE
“No matter how busy you may think you are, you must find time for reading or surrender yourself to self-chosen ignorance”- CONFUCIUS.

Many have surrendered to self-chosen ignorance due to poor reading habit. No man can know beyond what he had heard, seen, experienced and thought. You grow in wisdom, knowledge and understanding through reading.
Any man who is aware of his poor reading habit is aware of his ignorance. A man who celebrates his poor reading habit is celebrating his ignorance.

TO KNOW AND LEARN FROM THE SECRETS, EXPERIENCE AND MOTIVATIONS OF THE WRITER
“Every secret of a writer’s soul, every experience of his life, every quality of his mind is written large in his works”- virginia WOOLF.

You get to know the true identity and personality of an author in his writing. As a writer, I noticed that there are some personal issues, experience, thoughts that I share in my write ups but I don’t usually discuss in my conversations with people.
You learn better from an author through his writings not only by their conversations and lifestyle.

For the love of Revival, Spiritual Re-awakening And Global Revolution.

I honestly want to leave u in ur ignorance. The Quran is not an account of the Prophet Muhammad's life. Go read his life history even by western standard. Michael H. Hart wrote The 100: A Ranking of the Most Influential Persons in History. He placed Prophet Muhammad as number one and back his decision with verifiable argument. Many others have written about the wonderful Prophet of Arabia and I challenge u to do ur unbiased research and save urself from hell.
Let me share with u excerpt of an article written by Robert Louis Wilken a professor of christian history at the University of virginia.

"No event during the first millennium was more unexpected, more calamitous, and more consequential for Christianity than the rise of Islam. Few irruptions in history have transformed societies so completely and irrevocably as did the conquest and expansion of the Arabs in the seventh century. And none came with greater swiftness. Within a decade three major cities in the Byzantine Christian Empire”Damascus in 635, Jerusalem in 638, and Alexandria in 641”fell to the invaders.

" ...When reports began to circulate that something unusual was happening in the Arabian Peninsula, the Byzantines were preoccupied with the Sassanians in Persia who had sacked Jerusalem in 614 and made off with the relic of the True Cross. And in the West they were menaced by the Avars, a Mongolian people who had moved into the Balkans and were threatening Constantinople. Rumors about the emergence of a powerful leader among the Arabs in the distant Hijaz seemed no cause for alarm.

Even on the eve of the conquest of Jerusalem, when Arab armies had encircled the holy city and blocked the road to Bethlehem, the patriarch of Jerusalem, Sophronius, assured the faithful: “We will laugh at the demise of our enemies the Saracens [as Christians first called the Muslims] and in a short time see their destruction and complete ruin.” Fourteen hundred years later the Muslims are still in Jerusalem, and with each passing decade Islam figures larger in the minds of Christians, penetrates more deeply into Christian societies, and, by its fixed and impermeable tenancy of a large part of the globe, circumscribes the practice of Christianity".

Again he says

"If, however, one injects into this sanguine narrative the story of Islam, things take on a different coloring. Set against the history of Islam, the career of Christianity is marked as much by decline and extinction as it is by growth and triumph. By a selective choice of periods, events, and geographical regions, the conventional account (the one imagined from the perspective of Europe and North America) gives the impression of continuous progress.

But seen in global perspective, that may be illusory. To state the obvious: Most of the territories that were Christian in the year 700 are now Muslim. Nothing similar has happened to Islam. Christianity seems like a rain shower that soaks the earth and then moves on, whereas Islam appears more like a great lake that constantly overflows its banks to inundate new territory. When Islam arrives, it comes to stay”unless displaced by force, as it was in Spain. But the shameful expulsion of Muslims from Spain is hardly an event Christians would wish to celebrate today".

It is He who has sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over all religion, although they who associate others with Allah dislike it.
Qur'an 9:33

From one irrelevant topic to another. We are not playing a numbers game and even if we were, Islam doesn't outnumber Christianity by people count. Your "warlord" was a conqueror of lands and nations yes, but he did not win every battle, some he took some he ran away. But that is not the discussion.

You call me ignorant, I say give me proof of your Prophets Prophetic abilities and stop blabing.

By history, the Quaran is not an original text, the proclaimed Prophet did not jot one word in his time, and the body of work called Quaran was developed after his demise. Not a glorious death at that. Some warlord.

You talk about hell and your belief in how Islam saves you. Funny, for a religion that believes that their God will take their sins and places it on Jews and Christians so his faithful will escape damnation, sounds to me like redemption...sorry, find someone else.

When you want to talk, use well researched arguments. Islam used to be my interest, now I see whats in it. Confusion, Politics, nothing soul certain.

If you are so sure of that then you have nothing to worrt about. Hell is for who hell is for.
Did Jesus call himself the Son of God, in my Bible he certainly did!

Was he a Servant of God? YES. Was he a Prophet? CERTAINLY. Is he the Son of God? U can debate it.

Mohammed, prophet, really? No prophecy, no miracles, no life in him. Is he dead? YES. Is Jesus alive? YES.

If you want proof I will give to you like I have done before.

Education / 20 Things You Didn't Know About ... Aliens by Holuwaferanmi(m): 1:42pm On Aug 04, 2016
1 Astronomers Margaret Turnbull and Jill Tarter of the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C., have compiled a list of 17,129 nearby stars most likely to have planets that could support complex life.

2 According to Turnbull, stars must be at least 3 billion years old (to allow life time to evolve), have low mass, and have high levels of iron; metals are needed to form rocky, Earthlike planets.

3 Leading the list is Epsilon Indi A, a dim orange star just 11.8 light-years away, in our local corner of the Milky Way.

4 What's the frequency, Frank? Astronomer Frank Drake made the first scientific attempt to contact alien beings in 1960, when he used an 85-foot radio dish at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in West virginia to listen for signals from two nearby sunlike stars.

5 You haven't heard about it because his search turned up zilch.

6 The more sophisticated efforts of the SETI Institute in Mountain View, California, haven't fared any better. Since 1995, this privately funded project has scanned more than 1,000 stars, at a cost of $5 million a year, for alien radio squeaks.

7 Seth Shostak, senior astronomer at SETI, for reasons best known to him, reckons that the 350-antenna Allen Telescope Array, now being built, "will trip across a signal by the year 2025."

8 Download software from the SETI@home project to sift for alien signals on your home PC. 187,000 other people have.

9 Most likely spots for alien life in our solar system: underground refuges on Mars, hot spots on Saturn's moon Enceladus (whose south pole is dotted with geysers), and Jupiter's moons Europa and Callisto (whose icy crusts may conceal vast, underlying oceans of water).

10 Perhaps the earliest UFO sighting occurred in 1450 B.C., when Egyptians saw bright circles of light in the sky. Some UFO obsessives interpret Ezekiel: 1 in the Bible as a UFO report.

11 In 1957, Antonio Villas Boas, a Brazilian farmer, reported that he was abducted by barking aliens who covered him in gel and mated with him.

12 Thus setting a precedent for future close encounters: In a 2003 Harvard study, seven of 10 self-professed abductees stated under hypnosis that they had been used for breeding or sexual experiments by their alien captors.

13 Allan Cheyne, a psychologist at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, says that those who believe they've been abducted by aliens are often prone to experience sleep paralysis.

14 In Newfoundland, sleep paralysis is called the "old hag," because it is associated with visions of an elderly woman crouching on the sleeper's chest. In the West Indies, the phenomenon is said to occur when a ghost baby bounces on the snoozer.

15 In space, no one can hear you sneeze: Streptococcus mitis, a bacterium that infects the nose and throat, was inadvertently sent to the moon aboard the Surveyor 3 probe. The bugs were still alive when Apollo 12 astronauts retrieved the probe's camera two and a half years later.

16 Perhaps we scared them off: Scientists first tried to describe humans to aliens in 1972, when Carl Sagan and Frank Drake designed a plaque with a naked man and woman on it for the Pioneer 10 spacecraft.

17 Then we sent the soundtrack: The two Voyager probes, launched in 1977, included a 12-inch gold-plated record carrying whale calls, greetings in 55 human languages, and a Bulgarian folk song.

18 Just in case, NASA included a phonograph stylus and playing instructions.

19 On September 30, 2006, the French Center for National Space Studies beamed Cosmic Connexion, a TV program aimed at extraterrestrials, at a sunlike star called Errai 45 light-years from Earth.

20 The video should reach them in 2051.
Education / 23 Year-old Youth Achiever Drowns At US Waterfall by Newsbreakers: 2:28pm On Jul 01, 2016
A final year student of the University of Ilorin, John Paul Usman accidentally drowned over the weekend at virginia’s Cascade Falls in the United States.

The youth achiever and president of the UNESCO Clubs in Nigeria will be missed by many friends and colleagues who are still in shock over his sudden demise.

Tributes and messages of condolence have flooded his Facebook and Twitter pages.

The 23 year-old was selected for the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders, a flagship programme of President Obama, among a thousand young Africans who have established records of accomplishment in promoting innovation and positive change in their organisations, institutions, communities, and countries.

He joined 25 other fellows from 21 countries early this month in the United States by the virginia Polytechnic University for a six-week intensive civic leadership training course at the university’s Language and Culture Institute.

According to local media reports: “On Saturday, John Paul Usman went on a hike among 18 fellows accompanied by two university staff members towards the 66-foot waterfall near the university.

“He fell into the water and after he was retrieved, bystanders performed CPR on him for about 30 minutes before his death.”

Don Back, the director of the Institute where Usman was studying said in a statement released by the University: “Our thoughts are with John Paul’s family in this difficult time. We are devastated by this tragic event.”

The United States Diplomatic Mission to Nigeria as well as the fellowship programme released statements mourning his death and extending condolences to his family.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders said on their Facebook page: “John Paul is remembered fondly by the other Mandela Washington Fellows from his native Nigeria and at virginia Tech, and he leaves behind a legacy of servant leadership and a strong commitment to community service.”

Hey guys, am an undergraduate and am presently going to my final year I intend writing the GRE in august am on holidays now and have started preparing. I wanna do my masters as soon as I graduate and I wanna apply to MIT, umich, virginia tech and university of new orleans am thinking of doing a masters program in naval architecture. I wanna know if writing the GRE now is a good idea.

I need to ask: What informed your choice of those schools you picked?

If it's the prestige, then you might be missing the whole point of going for a (post)graduate degree.

They call it graduate school in the US.

Here's why.

"If you only want to go to a top graduate school, then you're going to graduate school for the wrong reason, and the chances of you getting in are low. You should go to graduate school, because you want to do research, and you don't need to go to a 'top' school for that."

If you are ready for the test, it is okay you go
ahead with it. For those schools you listed, be warned
that you need to score very high. Also, spread your risks too.

Education / Re: Is It Fair For Non-indigenes Of A State To Pay Higher School Fees? by Rayhutar(m): 1:08pm On May 16, 2016
EgunMogaji:

Yes, there is as such as higher out of state school fees in the US until the student meets the states residency requirements.

Please do not argue this simple fact like a typical Nigerian unless like me you've paid these fees first hand.

"What is an in-state resident and out-of-state resident?

The education system in the United States is controlled by individual states, rather than by the federal government. Each state has its own “public” institutions that are run and funded by the state. Funding for these schools comes from the state residents in the form of taxes. As a result, these state residents are able to attend the public institutions at a lower cost than people who are not residents of the state. This cost to the state residents is referred to as in-state tuition. The cost to residents from other states is known as out-of-state tuition."

"
What is the cost difference on average between in-state and out-of-state tuition?

As discussed earlier, each state controls its own public colleges and institutions. Within each state there are many different public universities and colleges, and each institution of higher education can have a different tuition rate. Due to the challenges of varying tuition rates, it is impossible to give a one-size fits all answer regarding tuition rates.

However, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) does offer data to allow you to compare in-state and out-of-stated tuition. For the 2010–2011 academic year, the average tuition for an in-state student at a four year public school for an undergraduate student was $6,752. The average tuition for an out-of-state student at a four year public school for an undergraduate student was $15,742. This means that, on average, it cost $8,990 more for students to attend a college or university in a state where they are not a resident.

At least they are talking about residency and paying of tax as a yardstick, in Nigeria if your parents is residing in a state he is also paying tax, so the children should not pay higher fees because of not been indigenous to that particular state.

Education / Re: Is It Fair For Non-indigenes Of A State To Pay Higher School Fees? by Nobody: 12:54pm On May 16, 2016
Rayhutar:
Nigerians, after they will be shouting one Nigeria, those taking about UK and USA, have dull brain, in UK if somebody travel from Manchester to study in Aberdeen, will Aberdeen school charge the person extra fees because he/she is not from Aberdeen, in USA is there a different school fees for people from different US states, federal government should call those states to order with immediate effect!

The following tables show the cost differences for in-state and out-of-state students at the public colleges and universities in Maryland, virginia, and District of Columbia for the 2012-2013 academic year."

Education / Nigerians Selected For 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship by Super1Star: 7:20pm On May 07, 2016
Yesterday, the U.S. Embassy recognized over 100 young Nigerians selected to participate in the 2016 Mandela Washington Fellowship. The Mandela Washington Fellowship is the flagship program of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) and a key component of President Barack Obama’s commitment to invest in the future of Africa. The White House developed this initiative in recognition of the critical and increasing role that young Africans are playing in strengthening democratic institutions, spurring economic growth, and enhancing peace and security in Africa.

Speaking at a special gathering in Abuja, U.S. Ambassador James F. Entwistle congratulated the new fellows on their competitive selection amongst 10,000 Nigerian applicants and tens of thousands of others throughout Africa.

“Our goal was to select a diverse group, both geographically and socio-economically, representing all Nigeria has to offer,” said Ambassador Entwistle. “You represent the best of Nigeria’s youth and the future of the country. Your selection says a lot about who you are as young leaders and the level of impact you are having on your communities as entrepreneurs, civic leaders, public servants, and champions of renewable energy,” he added.

On the list were over 90 outstanding young Nigerians including former beauty queen/MBGN 2000 Dr. Matilda Kerry, she has worked consistently to improve the lives of underprivileged children via the George Kerry Life Foundation; Adebola Williams, co-founder of Red Media who has set an indelible standard in the world of media and PR via the Future Awards, YNaija and more; Otto Orondaam who founded Slum2School which is now one of the largest volunteer driven non-profits in Nigeria.

Congrats to everyone selected!

Since 2014, 86 Nigerians have participated in the Mandela Washington Fellowship. Fellows participate in an intensive, six-week program on academic excellence and leadership focused on business and entrepreneurship, civic leadership, public management, and renewable energy at U.S. colleges and universities.
