Education / Tech:midlothian’s Olds Commits To Virginia Sleep Tech by boyerpzyayg: 12:45am On Feb 04, 2021
MIDLOTHIAN, Va. (WWBT) - Kameron Olds wanted his family to be able to see him play football, so the Midlothian senior weighed his options and made his decision.
Olds signed his national letter of intent to continue his career at virginia Tech on Wednesday morning, choosing the Hokies over Norfolk State, virginia, Florida State and Western Kentucky. He’ll head to Blacksburg as a preferred walk-on and plans to make the most of his opportunity.
“They’ve been staying consistent throughout COVID and have been recruiting me since day one,” Olds said.
The defensive end and linebacker was joined by his mother, father and grandfather during his signing day ceremony on Wednesday. He wants to make sure those same people can see him play on Saturdays, which is why he considered several in-state options.
“Ultimately I wanted to stay home for my family and my grandfather so he can come to my games in the future,” noted the Midlothian senior. “That was ultimately my decision to stay in virginia and virginia Tech.”
With his decision made, Olds is now looking forward to his senior football season. The Trojans will join most programs in the commonwealth and start practice on Thursday in preparation for a six-game regular season.
“The recruiting process was good and it was a good journey, but I’m glad it’s over. I’m a Hokie now and I’m ready to focus on my senior season and finish the school year off strong.”

Wanted poster, 1865

Six days after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, in the midst of a frantic two-week search, the war department hung Wanted posters with an innovation: Pasted on were photographs of John Wilkes Booth and two of his suspected conspirators. After seeing Booth’s picture, fishermen pointed soldiers in the right direction, and they located the assassin in a virginia tobacco barn; they burned the barn and found the suspect had been shot through the neck. The Wanted poster proved so effective that using a photograph became a fixture of law enforcement.

Education / Over 200 Universities, 17 US States Sue Over Foreign Student Rule by Lukingtel: 6:47am On Jul 14, 2020
The Department of Homeland Security says the policy is backed by existing law and still provides leniency.

Seventeen US states and more than 200 universities are taking legal action to challenge the Trump administration's new restrictions on international students, arguing that the policy jeopardises students' safety and forces institutions to reconsider new plans for the coming semester that they have spent months preparing.

The universities have signed court briefs supporting Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as they sue US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in federal court in Boston. The lawsuit challenges a recently announced directive saying international students cannot stay in the United States if they take all their classes online in the coming academic year.

On Monday, 17 states and the District of Columbia filed their own lawsuits, arguing the rule is politically motivated and an attempt by the Trump administration to force universities to hold in-person classes when classes resume in the autumn.

"The Trump administration didn't even attempt to explain the basis for this senseless rule, which forces schools to choose between keeping their international students enrolled and protecting the health and safety of their campuses," Maura Healey, the Massachusetts attorney general, said in a statement announcing the suit.

Other suits have come from Johns Hopkins University and the state of California. The University of California system has said it will sue.

A judge is scheduled to hear arguments on Tuesday in the case brought by Harvard and MIT. If the judge does not suspend the rule, colleges across the US will have until Wednesday to notify ICE if they plan to be fully online when classes start in August or September.

Legal questions

The Department of Homeland Security and ICE said the new policy is backed by existing law forbidding foreign students from taking all of their classes online. ICE suspended the rule in March in response to the pandemic, but the agency told universities it was subject to change, according to a Monday court filing from the Trump administration.

The agencies said their updated guidance still provides leniency by allowing foreign students to maintain their visas even if they study online from abroad in the coming fall semester.

"Rather than completely rescinding the March guidance and reverting to business as usual with respect to schools and foreign students, ICE announced a measured transition to begin a move toward reopening schools and allowing students to return to classrooms," the brief said.

A brief filed on Monday by 59 universities, however, said the rule throws their plans into disarray with some due to start the new academic year in less than a month. They challenged the policy's legal grounds and said it forces institutions across the nation to "choose between opening their campuses regardless of the public health risks, or forcing their international students to leave the country."

The group includes all the so-called Ivy League universities as well as other prestigious universities like Stanford and Duke, which together have more than 213,000 international students.

"These students are core members of our institutions," they wrote. "They make valuable contributions to our classrooms, campuses and communities - contributions that have helped make American higher education the envy of the world."

The colleges are asking the court to block the rule as quickly as possible, saying it is already being used to turn students away. Last Wednesday, a DePaul University student was prevented from entering the country after arriving in San Francisco, according to the filing. Harvard previously said one of its students from Belarus was turned away from a flight at an airport in Minsk last week.

If the policy is upheld, universities could be forced to reconsider their new term plans. Princeton last week said first-year students and juniors could live on campus during the first semester, while more senior students would replace them in the following term. But that plan was based on the understanding that foreign students could continue remote learning from the US, the filing said.

"Princeton now may be forced to reassess its plan, with just weeks to go before the fall semester, lest sophomore and senior international students be forced to leave the country - and potentially be unable to return for the spring," according to the brief.

A separate coalition of 180 colleges filed a brief saying that colleges were "blindsided" by the policy. The group, known as the Presidents' Alliance on Higher Education and Immigration, said it was a reversal of a March 13 directive from ICE that waived limitations around online education for foreign students "for the duration of the emergency". They point to data suggesting the number of new coronavirus cases in the US is higher now than it was in March.

"All seem to agree the emergency remains ongoing, but ICE's policy has inexplicably changed," the group wrote.

The directive also stands to hurt colleges financially, the group wrote. International students typically pay the highest tuition rates and rarely are eligible for scholarships. The alliance said many colleges risk losing millions of dollars over the policy, including Northern virginia Community College, which estimated it could lose nearly $10m in tuition from foreign students.

'Crippling consequences'

A separate brief filed by the Princeton Theological Seminary said the policy would bring "crippling consequences" from a funding perspective. The seminary said its international ties include many foreign donors who would find the guidance "such a shocking affront that PTS' relationships with those donors may never recover".

The suit has also been backed by 26 cities and counties that said the policy would damage their economies. Those range from New York City, which said international students contribute three billion dollars a year to its economy, to Iowa City, Iowa, which said its 2,500 resident international students contribute millions of dollars a year.

Briefs of support have also been filed by scientific associations, student governments, education unions and 71 higher education associations.

Under the new rule, international students would be forced to leave the US or transfer to another college if their schools operate entirely online for the fall semester. New visas will not be issued to students at those schools, ICE said, and others at schools offering a mix of online and in-person courses will be barred from taking all of their classes online.

It would apply even if an outbreak forces schools to shift classes entirely online mid-term, according to the guidance.

The policy was issued the same day Harvard announced that its first-years would be invited to campus but that all undergraduate classes will be held online.

The suit from Harvard and MIT argued that ICE issued the policy without offering any justification and without allowing the public to respond. It also said the agency is breaking from its March 13 promise to provide flexibility during the pandemic.

University of Texas-Austin, August 1, 1966 — 15 dead, 31 wounded

On a hot summer day in 1966, a military-trained sniper shot dozens of people from the observation deck of the University of Texas's main building, known as the Tower.

The shooting lasted more than 90 minutes, as officers responding to the attack were forced to move slowly and take cover often. Police got assistance from Texas students, who attempted to pick off the shooter from the ground with hunting rifles, restricting him to shoot through drain spouts for much of the attack.

Local police officers stormed the Tower and fatally shot the gunman. The incident spurred the creation of SWAT teams, and has drawn comparisons to the Las Vegas shooting because of the gunman's high vantage point.

In 2015, married couple Syed Rizwan Farook and Tashfeen Malik opened fire at Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino, California, where Farook worked as a health inspector. Police said the couple also planted three homemade pipe bombs in the building, though they failed to detonate.

The couple fled the scene in a vehicle and were killed by police four hours later. The FBI found that the two US citizens were "homegrown violent extremists" and were inspired by foreign terrorist groups.

In 2009, Nidal Hasan, a US Army major and psychiatrist, fatally shot 13 people and wounded 30 others at Ford Hood, an army base near Killeen, Texas. It was the deadliest mass shooting to take place on a US military base.

A civilian police sergeant shot Hasan, paralyzing him from the waist down and ending the shooting. Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 and remains in prison to this day.

Five years later, in 2014, Fort Hood was the site of a shooting spree that left three people dead and 14 wounded.

Less than 24 hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas, a gunman opened fire at a bar in Dayton, Ohio, in the early hours of Sunday morning. The shooting took place at Ned Peppers Bar, in Dayton's entertainment district, with an assault-style rifle, which could hold 100 rounds, police said.

Authorities identified the gunman as 24-year-old Connor Betts from Bellbrook, Ohio. Nine people, including Betts' sister, were killed in the attack. Another 27 were injured.

To escape the gunfire, people pushed down gates and were trampled. Dayton's police chief said officers killed Betts within 30 seconds of him beginning to shoot. It's unclear what prompted the shooting.

Education / Schools Of The World In Which Orders Are Very Different by derekteague: 8:56pm On May 07, 2020

In the memory of many of us, a school is strict teachers and funny classmates, 3-row desks and fear of getting a deuce. What about yoga, Thai boxing and facial massage? There are schools in which these are compulsory subjects.

Finland - relaxing school
The student must not be called to the board if he does not want to. Here, children do not pass exams; they do not have diaries. Parents can find out their child’s grades from an electronic classroom journal.
And at each break, students are taken for a walk outside, regardless of the weather.

China - charging and facial massage
Before lessons, students must do exercises, and twice a day - facial massage. Summer holidays last about a month, and the day is as busy as possible - study from 8 to 16, then additional classes.

Norway - no ratings
Here until the 8th grade they don’t give grades at all, so that the students do not compare each other and do not feel disadvantaged.

Thailand - boxing and massage
All the boys here have been engaged in Thai boxing from an early age, and the girls learn the basics of Thai massage. Maybe because of this, their massage and boxing are so popular all over the world.

Russia - when they submit an essay, they buy it more often
Many children pay to write paper on various sites so as not to waste time and go about their business.

Japan - Most Teachers - Men
In the country, the vast majority of teachers are men. And there are no dining rooms, and the children eat right at their desks.

Vietnam - Yoga Every Day
In all schools, students are required to do yoga and do exercises.

Czech Republic - the best mark is not a five, but a unit
We are used to believing that the best mark is five, and a deuce or one is “unsatisfactory.” Here the opposite is true: the best mark is “1”.

Bangladesh - Water Schools
There are more than 100 floating schools - they are located on boats. This is due to frequent floods in the country. Nevertheless, each such school has a library and Internet access, and the school itself is powered by solar panels.

Chile - the longest vacation
Chilean schoolchildren have very long summer holidays - from mid-December to late March.

Belgium - beer at school
Until the 70s, beer was freely sold in school canteens. Now, however, Belgian schoolchildren can only drink soda. But there are many supporters of the return of beer, because in their opinion, it is much more useful than cola.

UK is the oldest school
Here is the world's oldest school - the Royal School of Canterbury. It was founded in 597. Now she is equipped with modern equipment and continues to welcome students as cordially.

India - 32 thousand students in the same walls
There is a Montessori school where 32,000 students study at the same time - the largest school in the world.

Denmark - no classes and classrooms
Orestad School in Copenhagen is a work of modern art. There are no walls and classes: in fact, everyone is engaged in one huge room.

USA - children in the dungeon
Students at the Terraset School in virginia can be called "dungeon children." The school was built in the 70s, during the era of the US energy crisis. Natural earth cover retained energy and gave heat.

Canada - no discipline, grades and homework
ALPHA always has a festival of disobedience. There is no discipline, grades, homework. Pupils themselves choose classes, and classes are distrib

Education / The Life Of John Rolfe by lilyj22ohnson: 8:43pm On Apr 27, 2020
John Rolfe Apush Essay Introduction
John Rolfe was among the first English settlers to settle in the colony of virginia, the USA. He was the first settler to cultivate tobacco as a cash crop for export. His wife was Pocahontas, a daughter of a confederacy chief. He came from Norfolk England. His father was John Rolfe and his mother was Dorothea Mason. He got his baptism on May 6, 1585. During that time, Spain had a monopoly over the hugely profitable trade in tobacco (Foley, 1974). The colonies of Spain in the New World had a climate better suited for tobacco growing than the English colonies.
Education / First Drone And Data Academy Opens In Africa To Improve Service Delivery by BrandSpurNG: 1:31pm On Jan 15, 2020
NEW YORK/ LILONGWE, 13 January 2020 – The first African Drone and Data Academy (ADDA) opened today in Lilongwe, Malawi, UNICEF announced.

The move is part of efforts to promote the use of drones in programmes and services that will impact the lives of children and young people.

“Humanitarian and development programme delivery in Africa and beyond can benefit significantly from the application of drone technology,” said UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Fore. “The African Drone and Data Academy will be instrumental in equipping young people with the skills they need to use the technology to benefit children and their communities.”

Building on the work of Africa’s first humanitarian corridor launched in Malawi in 2017, the academy will develop expertise in the use of drones for humanitarian, development and commercial purposes across the continent through a 12-week course. It plans to train approximately 150 students to build and pilot drones by 2021. Funding from UNICEF’s partners will provide free tuition to the first cohort of 26 students from across Africa.

“In Malawi, we strongly believe that adopting modern technologies such as drones and advanced data analysis and management techniques will help us to serve our children better. We are proud to partner with UNICEF in such an exciting endeavour,” said James Chakwera, Director of Malawi’s Department of Civil Aviation.

The curriculum has been developed in partnership with virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (virginia Tech) – following its successful delivery of training workshops in Malawi since 2017. The course will combine theoretical and practical methodologies in making, testing and flying drones.

By 2022, the academy will run a tuition-free two-year master’s degree program in drone technology, in conjunction with Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST). It will also deliver a curriculum that will build local capacity and a favourable ecosystem for the emergence of sustainable business models for using drones for humanitarian and development missions.

“The ADDA reflects virginia Tech’s ongoing commitment to the innovative application of drone technology and education in Malawi and the Africa region,” said Kevin Kochersberger, associate professor at virginia Tech who will lead the project. “The academy will give graduates the necessary skills for jobs using drone applications ranging from agriculture and health to natural resources monitoring.”

Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by Maxchisom: 8:10pm On Oct 01, 2019
Dear.

Trust you're doing great.
I'll be writing GRE early next month. I've not registered yet.

Can you assist me with the relevant for preparation.

Best regards,

Afamefuna.

Tohsine:
Good day everyone,
I wrote GRE last month.
Verbal: 143
Quant: 156
AWA: 3.5.

I intended to apply for the Spring 2020 admission. Needless to say, I used only one week to fully prepare for the test due to the nature of my job, although I have always been checking GRE vocabulary words on Magoosh flashcards during leisure time. I never knew my verbal and AWA skills were poor, perhaps because I did not have ample time to take the practice tests.
My questions:
Which ebook is the best for verbal and AWA? How can I improve these scores?
Which material can I use to study Data Interpretation as I was unable to solve some questions in that section on the test day?
