Prof sirRiddy, I'm only trying to follow the footsteps of yourself and the other "elders" in the house. Appreciate your continuous contributions to the thread.

@bolded, Sure, I've read the thread but there's no discounting your sage advice whenever the opportunity presents itself.
Here's my profile:

Undergraduate GPA: (Petroleum Engineering, from Nigeria uni, ) 3.09/5 (2.97/3- WES)
TOEFL: 104 (R 30, L 28, S 24, W 22)
GRE: 309 (Q 157, V 152, A 3.5)

Target Schools:
University of Tulsa, Oklahoma
Louisiana state university, Baton rouge.
(No categorisation, since safe schools are no longer safe)
Still searching for others (applying to few schools due to financial constraints, after all it's only one admit one needs wink )

While I understand that PhDs are the priority when it comes to funding, I'm yet to see how a PhD suits my career projections atm. Hence, I'm looking at an MSc in Petroleum Engineering (despite the downturn)

Will appreciate any intel on the aforementioned schools and others... Respect!

You can check out University of Wyoming
And University of West virginia.

One of them require a GPA of 2.75 and you could have a PhD in PE without MSc.
And I also think, you have a good enough GRE scores for those schools. I'll like to speak with you directly. Have sent a pm. RSVP

Fans don't care! R.Kelly has 14 upcoming shows planned and there's still huge demand for tickets amid allegations he's running a "cult."

Kelly's gigs were already scheduled before the scandal broke, but all of them are still scheduled, starting July 28 in virginia Beach and running through October 8 in Ontario, Cali.

TMZ reached out to all of the venues - 11 confirmed nothing's changed. In fact, some like the Chene Park Amphitheatre in Detroit, told the news outlet they've been getting a high volume of calls this week alone and are almost sold out.

Others told them they hadn't even received angry calls from customers over the claims R. Kelly is holding women against their will.

10. Lynching Execution of an alleged offender by a mob or a group without a legal trial. Named after Charles Lynch, an American Revolutionary and virginia planter, who incarcerated loyalist supporters of the British even when he didn’t have proper jurisdiction.
During the American Revolution, a virginia Quaker named Charles Lynch headed a county court that imprisoned British loyalists for up to one year. He claimed that this was war necessity even though he had no proper jurisdiction. He was even able to persuade the Congress of the Confederation to exonerate him and his associates. This, however, gave rise to a controversy and the term “Lynch law”, which came to mean punishment without a trial, even though no execution was ever performed.

" Standardized tests and grades have minimal influence on your chances of admission and reveal very little about your potential as a researcher."

Forget it! This doesn't apply to Nigerian applicants. How else will US schools assess your ability, if not with your GPA or test scores? Is it through the non-existent research experience we have here?

If you're really passionate about studying abroad (esp US), collect your transcripts ASAP, sit your butt down and prepare very well for the GRE, score as high as you can, find 2-3 people (lecturers or employers) who can recommend your work ethic, and reach out to people who can help you write a stellar Statement of Purpose.

Select good schools that fit your profile, apply and commit your journey into God's hands.

All the best!

Education / The First Educated Nigerian And African First Author by lightblazingnow(m): 3:39pm On May 18, 2017
https://www.wealthresult.com/business/olaudah-equiano-is-first-nigerian-and
Olaudah Equiano Is The First Educated Nigerian and First African Author

Olaudah Equiano was born in 1745 to the Igbo people in the region now known as Nigeria. The youngest son, he had five brothers and a younger sister. When he was eleven, he and his sister were kidnapped and sold to native slaveholders. After changing hands several times, Equiano was taken to the coast where he was held by European slave traders. He was transported with 244 other enslaved Africans across the Atlantic Ocean to Barbados in the West Indies, from where he and a few others were soon transferred to the British colony of virginia.

He was bought by Michael Pascal, a lieutenant in the Royal Navy. Pascal renamed the boy as Gustavus Vassa, after the Swedish noble who had become Gustav I of Sweden, king in the 16th century. Equiano had already been renamed twice: he was called Michael while on the slave ship that brought him to the Americas; and Jacob, by his first owner. This time Equiano refused and told his new owner that he would prefer to be called Jacob. His refusal, he says, “gained me many a cuff” – and eventually he submitted to the new name.

Equiano wrote in his narrative that domestic slaves in virginia were treated cruelly, suffering punishments such as an “iron muzzle” (scold’s bridle), used around the mouth to keep house slaves quiet, leaving them unable to speak or eat. He thought that the eyes of portraits followed him wherever he went, and that a clock could tell his master about anything Equiano did wrong. Shocked by this culture, Equiano tried washing his face in an attempt to change its colour.

As the slave of a naval captain, Equiano was trained in seamanship and traveled extensively with his master. This was during the Seven Years War with France. Although Pascal’s personal slave, Equiano was expected to assist the crew in times of battle; his duty was to haul gunpowder to the gun decks. Pascal favoured Equiano and sent him to his sister-in-law in Great Britain, to attend school and learn to read.

At this time, Equiano converted to Christianity. His master allowed Equiano to be baptized in St Margaret’s, Westminster, on February 1759. Despite the special treatment, after the British won the war, Equiano did not receive a share of the prize money, as was awarded to the other sailors. Pascal had promised his freedom, but did not release him.

Pascal sold Equiano to Captain James Doran of the Charming Sally at Gravesend, from where he was transported to Montserrat, in the Caribbean Leeward Islands. He was sold to Robert King, a Quaker merchant from Philadelphia who traded in the Caribbean. Pascal had instructed Doran to ensure that he sold Equiano “to the best master he could, as he told him I was a very deserving boy, which Captain Doran said he found to be true

Equiano travelled to London and became involved in the abolitionist movement, which had been particularly strong amongst Quakers, but was by 1787 non-denominational. As early as 1783 he had been passing information about the slave trade to abolitionists such as Granville Sharp, and the publicisation of the Zong massacre (a cause célèbre for the abolitionist movement) can ultimately be attributed to Equiano. Equiano was a Methodist, having been influenced by George Whitefield’s evangelism in the New World.

Equiano was befriended and supported by abolitionists, many of whom encouraged him to write and publish his life story. Equiano was supported financially by philanthropic abolitionists and religious benefactors; his lectures and preparation for the book were promoted by, among others, Selina Hastings, Countess of Huntingdon.

His account surprised many with the quality of its imagery, description, and literary style. Some who had not yet joined the abolitionist cause felt shame at learning of his suffering. Entitled The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, or Gustavus Vassa, the African, it was first published in 1789 and rapidly went through several editions. It is one of the earliest known examples of published writing by an African writer to be widely read in England. It was the first influential slave autobiography. Equiano’s personal account of slavery and of his experiences as a black immigrant caused a sensation on publication. The book fueled a growing anti-slavery movement in Great Britain.

The autobiography goes on to describe how Equiano’s adventures brought him to London, where he married into English society and became a leading abolitionist. Equiano’s book became his most lasting contribution to the abolitionist movement, as it vividly demonstrated the humanity of Africans as much as the inhumanity of slavery.

Equiano records his and Granville Sharp’s central roles in the movement. As a major voice in this movement, Equiano petitioned the King in 1788. He was appointed to an expedition to resettle London’s poor Blacks in Sierra Leone, a British colony on the west coast of Africa. He was dismissed after protesting against financial mismanagement.

The book not only was an exemplary work of English literature by a new, African author, but it also increased Equiano’s personal revenue. He traveled extensively throughout England, Scotland, and Ireland promoting the book. The returns gave him independence from benefactors and enabled him to fully chart his own purpose. He worked to improve economic, social and educational conditions in Africa, particularly in Sierra Leone.

Related to the abolitionist cause, Equiano was also a leader of the Poor Black community in London. Because of his connections, he was a prominent figure in the political realm, and he often served as a voice for his people. Equiano’s reactions and remarks were frequently published in newspapers like the Public Advertiser and the Morning Chronicle. He had more of a voice than most Africans, and he seized various opportunities to utilize it.

please take it easy. you have female relatives at home. stop using those languages. the ability to menstruate makes them unique. no man will associate himself with a woman that is unable to menstruate every month.
the problem with our Nigeria guys is that they do not carry their brain along when chasing a woman. that is why women deal with them and use them.
yes the way our Nigerian boys chase a woman is really annoying. they chase them as if their life depends on it. they behave as if they can't survive without a woman's virginia, breast back side.
my lecturer once told me that for a man to succeed he must do away with some certain things like greed, attachment, pride, anger and the greatest of it all is lust towards the opposite sex. men who always wants to get inbetween the legs of a woman hardly succeed
the thing most guys don't understand is that they feel the body of a woman gives us that sexual urge and erection. No. it is the seminal fluid and semen that constantly flows in our epidydemis that stimulates our erection through our mind. that is why immediately after ejaculation during sex with a woman weather she is the most beautiful girl or not then the woman instantly becomes like a wood to us. we will not feel anything again until after a couple of seconds or minutes when the little seminal fluid, semen and sperm are restored back then our mind will start all over again. the semen will stimulates our body and our mind will respond
so the liquid in our body called semen, seminal fluid and sperm including our mind gives us erection and pleasure not because of the breast or woman vaginal.
so it is possible for a man to stay without sex than for a woman to stay. and moreover women need and enjoy sex than men. but because they know how to suppress their urge and mind it now make it look as if men are the ones that need sex.
try to pick your ear with a broom. then tell me who enjoy the sweet sensation. your ear or the broom. definitely it is the ear
exactly how the vagina and the penis behave. the vagina is like the ear and the penis is like the broom. so during sex the penis(broom) is inserted into the vagina(ear) and this gives the vagina(ear) a sweet sensation!

correct bro. But never use d word fustration on me again.

Education / How Black Slaves Were Punished by Nobody: 6:57pm On May 13, 2017
The slave-owning colonies had laws governing the control
and punishment of slaves which were known as slave
codes .
[45] South Carolina established its slave code in
1712, based on the 1688 English slave code in Barbados .

The South Carolina slave code was a model for other North
American colonies. In 1770, Georgia adopted the South
Carolina slave code and Florida adopted the Georgia
code. [45] The 1712 South Carolina slave code included the
following provisions: [45]

Slaves were forbidden to leave the owner's property
unless accompanied by a white person, or with permission.
If a slave left the owner's property without permission,
"every white person" was required to chastise them.

Any slave attempting to run away and leave the colony
(later, the state) received the death penalty by hanging, decapitation, whipping, shooting.

Any slave who evaded capture for 20 days or more was
to be publicly whipped for the first offense; branded with an
"R" on the right cheek on the second offense; lose one ear
if absent for thirty days on the third offense, and castrated
on the fourth offense.

Owners refusing to abide by the slave code were fined
and forfeited their slaves.

Slave homes were searched every two weeks for
weapons or stolen goods. Punishment escalated from loss
of an ear, branding and nose-slitting to death on the fourth
offense.

No slave could work for pay; plant corn, peas or rice;
keep hogs, cattle, or horses; own or operate a boat; buy or
sell, or wear clothes finer than "Negro cloth".

The South Carolina slave code was revised in 1739, with
the following amendments: [45]

No slave could be taught to write, work on Sunday, or
work more than 15 hours per day in summer and 14 hours
in winter.

The willful killing of a slave was fined £700, and
"passion" killing £350.

The fine for concealing runaway slaves was $1,000 and a
prison sentence up to one year.

A fine of $100 and six months in prison were imposed
for employing a freeman or slave as a clerk.

A fine of $100 and six months in prison were imposed
for selling (or giving) alcoholic beverages to slaves.

A fine of $100 and six months in prison were imposed
for teaching a slave to read and write; the death penalty
was imposed for circulating incendiary literature.
Freeing a slave was forbidden except by deed
(after
1820, only by permission of the legislature; Georgia required
legislative approval after 1801).

The slave codes in the tobacco colonies (Delaware,
Maryland, North Carolina and virginia) were modeled on the
virginia code, established in 1667. [45] The 1682 virginia
code included the following provisions:
Slaves were prohibited from possessing weapons.

Slaves were prohibited from leaving their owner's
plantation without permission.

Slaves were prohibited from attacking a white person,
even in self-defense.

A runaway slave, refusing to surrender, should be killed
without penalty.

...........Let me use dis opportunity to advise guys who foolishily follow/live their lives to please girls. U are on ur way to your early grave.
See the way nairalanders adores some stupid girls here makes me go gaga. I dont really undastand whats so special about their toto or nyash or breast.
It takes only a woman to bring a very strong man to his knees.
For Gods sake why do men follow women about like sheep with direction.
A gal dat mensturates evry 28days, wets her dirty smelling pants, yet u behave like an idiot before her. Wetin they hungry u for her stupid body?
ThankGod for my kind of friends.
my guy take it easy. I understand your frustration
maybe girls have dealt with you seriously.
remember any female child is someone sister, mother, aunty, cousin.
please take it easy. you have female relatives at home. stop using those languages. the ability to menstruate makes them unique. no man will associate himself with a woman that is unable to menstruate every month.
the problem with our Nigeria guys is that they do not carry their brain along when chasing a woman. that is why women deal with them and use them.
yes the way our Nigerian boys chase a woman is really annoying. they chase them as if their life depends on it. they behave as if they can't survive without a woman's virginia, breast back side.
my lecturer once told me that for a man to succeed he must do away with some certain things like greed, attachment, pride, anger and the greatest of it all is lust towards the opposite sex. men who always wants to get inbetween the legs of a woman hardly succeed
the thing most guys don't understand is that they feel the body of a woman gives us that sexual urge and erection. No. it is the seminal fluid and semen that constantly flows in our epidydemis that stimulates our erection through our mind. that is why immediately after ejaculation during sex with a woman weather she is the most beautiful girl or not then the woman instantly becomes like a wood to us. we will not feel anything again until after a couple of seconds or minutes when the little seminal fluid, semen and sperm are restored back then our mind will start all over again. the semen will stimulates our body and our mind will respond
so the liquid in our body called semen, seminal fluid and sperm including our mind gives us erection and pleasure not because of the breast or woman vaginal.
so it is possible for a man to stay without sex than for a woman to stay. and moreover women need and enjoy sex than men. but because they know how to suppress their urge and mind it now make it look as if men are the ones that need sex.
try to pick your ear with a broom. then tell me who enjoy the sweet sensation. your ear or the broom. definitely it is the ear
exactly how the vagina and the penis behave. the vagina is like the ear and the penis is like the broom. so during sex the penis(broom) is inserted into the vagina(ear) and this gives the vagina(ear) a sweet sensation!

DREAM

By Michael Taiwo, PhD

This is the transcript of the speech I delivered at the 2017 Chemical Engineering Spring Banquet in Fayetteville, AR on May 4, 2017. The audience of about 150 people comprised of Professors, graduating Chemical Engineering students (Bachelors, Masters and PhD) and their friends and families.

I flew in last night and it brought back memories of the first time I flew into XNA. I was expecting 8-lane highways, high-rise buildings, high-speed trains…just like in the American movies I saw back in Nigeria. Instead, I came out of this airport, and all I saw were… cows. I felt like I bought the wrong ticket.

I remember seeing so many trees without leaves. The driver told me that’s why it’s called the Dead of Winter. “Don’t worry, it will get better.” Of course, it got worse. We had an ice storm!

I lived in Lagos, a city of 20 million. I’m used to seeing people everywhere. I remember my first day of class, I stepped out of my apartment and saw nobody. I didn’t think anything of it. I got on the street and still nobody! How can there be so much space with not even a single soul in sight?

But my most vivid memory was standing in front of Old Main and thinking to myself “I made it! I made it!!” Why was I so giddy? It’s because I almost did not make it. I almost allowed fear to kill my dream of coming to the United States, of getting a PhD, of pushing myself to the limit.

You see, I finished my Bachelors in Chemical Engineering with First-Class Honors, I won some competitive awards along the way and had an impressive resume. With my profile, I could get any job I wanted in Nigeria, move into a nice neighborhood and just enjoy life. Not bad for a boy that was raised on less than 50 cents a day. The problem was that I wanted more. I wanted to experience places I only read about in books. I wanted the highest academic degree I could get. I wanted to study here, and broaden my knowledge, challenge my perspectives, engage with the world…I wanted more.

The only thing that stood in my way was fear, the fear of everybody around me. Those closest to me didn’t understand why I would want to leave a guaranteed good life for an uncertain future. Arkansas?! Where is that? Do you know anyone there? Nope. Have you ever been there? Nope. Why not consider a bigger, more diverse city? I kinda like the program they got going at Fayetteville. These are just a sample of the questions I had to field from those genuinely concerned for me.

This back and forth was still going on, when, on the morning of April 16, 2007, a senior at virginia Tech opened fire, killing 32 people and wounding 17 others. It was the deadliest shooting ever on an American campus. I remember the details of the massacre because almost everyone forwarded me the news. I now had a clear choice to make: allow the actions of a deranged young man to derail my dreams or move forward in spite of the fear? I am here tonight because I chose my dream over fear.

Attending this school ranks as one of my best decisions. I made friends here [that] I’ll keep for life. Some of them are in this room. This is where I fulfilled a long-cherished dream of becoming a Doctor of Engineering. And, let’s face it, what’s better than being a Razorback!

Look, your dreams will always exist side by side with your fears. Both of them are a product of your rich imagination. And you have the power to make one or the other a reality. To have life, to have liberty, to have happiness, you need to feed your dreams and starve your fears. What will prevent you from living the life you want is not lack of money, or lack of time or lack of talent. What will prevent you from living the life you want is a lack of belief in your dreams. You have to believe your dreams to make them real.

People ask me how I survived poverty. How can a poor boy with no money and no connections in an impoverished society make it? The answer is surprisingly simple. I dream. I DREAM. The life I lead today is the product of my dream yesterday. I am dreaming right now of the life I want to lead tomorrow and I will not let fear dictate what I can or cannot become.

The most pernicious fears are not those of others but those that come from within, those that nag at you at every turn, seeking to paralyze you into inaction. As I was completing my program here, I was suddenly faced with the realization that I had spent my entire life in school, from Pre-K to PhD. [But seriously] I had been told about how real life is different from school; and how the school system does a horrible job of preparing students for success. Somehow, I took these well-meaning but misguided opinions as self-evident truths. On one hand, I was happy to be finishing my PhD; on the other, I was afraid, afraid that, perhaps, my best years were behind me.

But I have always dreamt of going into the oil and gas industry. Nigeria has plenty of oil and gas so it was a childhood dream. Here again, my dreams came face to face with my fears. I could go into the industry and fall flat on my face or I could stay in the familiar academic world. I have many brilliant friends who finished a PhD, went on to do a post-doc and took up a position with a university. It’s a great career. It’s just not my dream. If I followed their footsteps, it would be out of fear. And you can never have a great career based on fear.

It turns out my fears were unfounded. Work is very much like school. At school, you do your homework and receive a grade. Same thing in the office. In school, you take many classes at once; at work, you will have several projects simultaneously. More important, when you pass an exam, you are promoted, then given a more difficult exam. It will be the same at work. It’s actually better at work because each promotion comes with…privileges. I might have stayed in school forever if I get a big bonus for passing exams! So do not cast away your confidence which has a great recompense of reward. Don’t let anyone scare you that you are now entering the real world as if the last four years weren’t real. Real world is surviving homework after homework while still having time for friends, family and Bikes Blues and Barbeque.

I have a career, today, that only existed in my imagination just a few years ago because I fed my dreams and starved my fears. Is it possible that I could have gone into Corporate America and failed? Absolutely. But I have made a lifelong commitment to acknowledge my fear without catering to it. I have made it second nature to nurture my dreams because that is the only way to turn them into reality.

Friends, you are moving into the next chapter of your life. And I would be surprised if on some level, you are not afraid. The unknown can be scary. Fear during a transition is natural, even expected. But don’t let fear factor into your decisions. Move as if you cannot fail. The odds may be stacked against you but you can beat the odds. People beat the odds every day, why not you? Let your dreams be the driver, taking you to places you have only been in your head. People ask me if I consider myself fortunate. Yes. I have been fortunate to be bold. Fortune favors the bold.

When you have kids, you watch kid movies. Last week, we saw one from Disney called Zootopia. I can’t tell you what the story was about but a few lines from the sound track stuck with me. At various points during the movie I heard the words “Try Everything; I’ll keep on making those new mistakes; I’ll keep on making them every day.” Disney just distilled my entire message about dreaming more and fearing less into three sentences. So to the class of 2017, I say: Try Everything; Make New Mistakes; Make Them Every Day. Thank you.

Second offer from University of virginia. Fully funded with a research fellowship + RAship. Rather late because I already accepted Penn State after waiting on virginia for soooooo long. Spoke with my super nice POI from virginia and he really wants to work with me smiley and putting me in a big fix. Lol. Oh! And I already have my I-20 from Penn and paid SEVIS. Ah well... I don't know. grin

Scholastica16, how far for your end?

How much in Naria did you pay for SEVIS?
Education / How To Study Free In Berea College, USA by ujonah12: 7:23am On Apr 13, 2017
Berea College is a college like no other in the United States.Presently, it is the only higher institution that offers 100% free admission for both domestic and international students. Thus, all admitted students can expect admissions at Berea College to be super competitive. However, to stand a good chance of getting into Berea you are encouraged to apply early in the year.
Now find below some of the reasons you should apply to Berea College.

Academic Preparation
Any College you attend must provide many things—but more than anything, it should provide you an excellent tertiary education. At Berea College, that is exactly what you will receive.
Classes at Berea are taught by highly qualified professors, and not some half baked graduate students. Additionally, Berea College has an impressive 11:1 student to teacher ratio which implies that you’ll receive the personal attention you so need to succeed. There are more than 45 majors, minors, and programs to choose from—you’ll probably find the field of study you are interested in—or develop new interests. You’ll be able to select from a curriculum that includes undergraduate research, service-learning, and numerous study abroad opportunities
You won't believe every admitted student gets a new laptop computer. This special feature allows professors to use technology to enrich and humanize the classroom experience without excluding anyone (plus you keep the laptop when you graduate).
The academic experience at Berea is challenging, but when you graduate, your degree will say a lot about what you have already accomplished—and what you are capable of accomplishing in the future.

Job Prospects
As graduate, you’ll be hunting for a job like hundreds of thousands of other college graduates. But the question is what will set you apart from the rest? As a Berea graduate, it will undoubtedly be your impressive resume.
At Berea, every student is placed in a paid, on-campus job. Through this Work Program, you’ll gain valuable experience that translates into “real world marketable” skills to put on your resume. Additionally, You’ll also earn a salary (about $1,600 your first year) to assist with living expenses.
You’ll also have access to co-op and internship opportunities throughout the United States and the world—and our Career Development office will assist you in finding that perfect internship or in landing your first job out of college.
Interested in graduate or professional schools? Our placement rates are outstanding and our students have been accepted into programs at such schools as Harvard, Yale, and the University of virginia.

I read this back to front and front to back like 10 times. I am deeply touched by your story. Yours just typifies the statement that true and lasting wealth is of the mind. So forget low class or poor, you are loaded Dr. and we have a lot to learn from you. All the best in your, what-is-sure-to-be success-laden journey into proper research in virginia.

I have some experience with IPS myself but it is a negative one. So I took the entrance test, passed it and got invited for the panel interview. After having answered their barrage of questions for what felt like the whole day, many people were convinced I would definitely be taken.

They were wrong. I didn't even make the reserve list. Pained me for like 1 full day but I moved on.

@the moniker, yea you sure do know him. They have attacked him alot so he is always hyper-defensive or even paranoid but I learn alot from him.

Edit: so Petroleum engineering, how and why did you transition to materials engineering?
Thanks Scholastica16. So sorry about IPS. @the moniker, I get where he comes from, albeit, too acerbic. There is another one that is now missing in action - four letter moniker that starts with small 'b' grin. @ the field transition, I applied for MS Pet, them say them no dey offer am again but would not let me go. So I was offered Mat, and I decided to try it out, oblivious of the fact that it was a blessing in disguise. Mat is a very boring and tough subject but somehow I fell in love with it.

@Scholastica16. Thanks for the insightful comments and probing questions.
@bolded, same question I've been meaning to ask.

Thanks Scholastica16. I am so flattered. Working in ExxonMobil or being Akpabio's minion has no role to play when someone is passionate about school (at least for me). For e.g. During NYSC, I spent all my meager corper money applying to schools for MSc (IPS, UK, US) which included registration for GRE and TOEFL and subscribing to expensive internet service at the time. I never had enough left to eat sef. In the end, I had IPS and two international offers of admission. I had to start hustling for scholarship. IPS was funded but we still had to pay 100k for registration/acceptance. I hustled and paid by the deadline given and guess what, the next day I got scholarship to go to U.K. Omo, I forgot about the 100k I dashed IPS, packed my bags and chased the plane to the UK. For me, it's always about the end game! BTW, I am from a poor very low class family.

American PhD will earn me much more than N300k grin grin grin

Oh! And I know that moniker that starts with capital 't'. It ends with small 's'. grin grin

I might sound crazy but after 2 sleepless nights of thorough contemplation, I think I will have to resign the Penn State appointment. Yes, I have spent about 300k to send transcripts, ship I-20 and paid reservation on an apartment lease but it's really about what I want out of the PhD program. The stipend virginia is offering is actually a little less than Penn but it's a GRA that is guaranteed till I finish my program so long as I maintain 3.0GPA, and the research fellowship covers all tuition fees and health insurance. On top of that, my POI guarantees funding for travel for conferences, and pushes his students to deliver poster presentations and publish papers every year. He seems to invest a lot of time in his students and I really like that. And in that department, there are 3 other Profs in the same research area. That encourages sharing of information and the students can always assist and encourage each other.

On the Other hand, Penn State offers a GTA for the first year and you are supposed to explore research areas within your first year and hopefully match a Prof that can offer you GRA. If that fails, then you are stuck with GTA till you find GRA or maybe till the end of your program. In my case, there is only 1 Prof in my research area. So the big question is ...what if she does not have funding? And I remember her telling me last 2 years when I was just exploring that she had no funding and that if I were to apply and be accepted, my only hope would be the departmental GTA which is what is happening now. I tried to contact her again during this application process but she never responded. So I don't know if situations have changed.

My main objective of studying for a PhD is build research skills and I want to start developing that from day 1. That will even facilitate an early completion of the program. I don't want to be stuck 'building communication skills' and at the end of the first year, I can't even set up a simple experiment grin and no headway on how to start my research. The other good thing about virginia is that in my 3rd/4th year, I will be required to serve partly as a TA to build communication skills. That way, it's like getting the best of both worlds.

Whilst Carnegie Mellon rejected me, I was never going to go there because they are not strong in my research area. In fact, they don't even offer it. I know I might sound silly but I just wanted to test it because Nastydamus was going to apply there and he had my same GRE scores, LOL. The last school is UPitt, no news from that end at all and frankly, I can't be bothered.

No, I am not waiting for Ohio. I spent my money and time to apply and I want to know what they eventually decide. It's also a fully funded program through strictly GRAs.

In the end, Penn State is higher ranked than UVA but I don't think the difference is so significant. I don't want to join a program that I am not really happy with just because of a 'little bit more name' grin. And I really hope that I am making the right decision. It's the immensity of my contribution to knowledge that will give me Green Card wink (if Trump go gree) and a rewarding career in research.

Sorry for my long speech this hot Sunday afternoon!

Drhopeful: I'd begin by saying a mighty congratulations to you on your offers, especially the one from UVA. As I read your post stating the offer from UVA, I was like...'haaaa Drhopeful must jump at this'! But going down and discovering you had obtained I-20 and processed SEVIS payment with respect to Pennstate, I couldn't but exclaim 'Oh no'!!...lol.
I frankly respect your decision. PhD is research intensive. I feel there's nothing as juicy as having an opportunity to travel for conferences and make presentations in the course of doing a PhD. Not only will it enhance building of research skills, it helps build a professional network as well. Infact I've been thinking, when I eventually get a GTA and I develop a good rapport with a Professor in my field, I wouldn't mind switching to an GRA. I feel it gives a student enough time to concentrate on research rather than doing a research and teaching, grading, etc simultaneously.
Moreso, your professor could recommend you to research institutes to do some research work, some of which could eventually pave way for job opportunities in the future. When you amass these skills and become highly productive in the research industry, God can make Trump himself hand you a green card... grin
Thumps up (both hands and legs thumps!.. grin) to you for your decision. You'll recover all you spent processing PennState in manifolds. May God give you more excellence spirit as you lunch out. By the way, please change your moniker to Profhopeful as I envisage that in the nearest future.. cheesy

PS: Abeg make una no mind my cut & join grammer o....if to say na maths now, the formula for connect the variables logically and coherently.. grin
