Education / Re: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by happyday: 10:21pm On Apr 09, 2017 |
revenant: Well, by default, US PhD offers almost always come with 'full' funding, so that shouldn't be a differentiating factor to choose between two similar offers. Also, there's absolutely no problem with not knowing your advisor prior to enrolling. Creating a rapport with your advisor before you start is the exception, not the norm. Most schools will let you free style for a semester, so you can talk to profs, check their labs, and decide which one to work in for the next 4 + years. Cos they believe it's a decision that pretty much affects a bunch of things down the line. So, that too, isn't a clear cut yardstick to accept or deny. 1 Like |

mfarad: I personal dont see it as a tough call, if you are given admission into a top school with full funding for your PhD program and then you don't know your supervisor yet, I think there is a problem. When are you going to build rapport with him or her? when are you going to develop research plan?. If I were her, I will go with U of virginia, reason because she had already developed a relationship with that advisor which is what PhD is all about. 1 Like |

Scholastica16:I might sound crazy but after 2 sleepless nights of thorough contemplation, I think I will have to resign the Penn State appointment. Yes, I have spent about 300k to send transcripts, ship I-20 and paid reservation on an apartment lease but it's really about what I want out of the PhD program. The stipend virginia is offering is actually a little less than Penn but it's a GRA that is guaranteed till I finish my program so long as I maintain 3.0GPA, and the research fellowship covers all tuition fees and health insurance. On top of that, my POI guarantees funding for travel for conferences, and pushes his students to deliver poster presentations and publish papers every year. He seems to invest a lot of time in his students and I really like that. And in that department, there are 3 other Profs in the same research area. That encourages sharing of information and the students can always assist and encourage each other. On the Other hand, Penn State offers a GTA for the first year and you are supposed to explore research areas within your first year and hopefully match a Prof that can offer you GRA. If that fails, then you are stuck with GTA till you find GRA or maybe till the end of your program. In my case, there is only 1 Prof in my research area. So the big question is ...what if she does not have funding? And I remember her telling me last 2 years when I was just exploring that she had no funding and that if I were to apply and be accepted, my only hope would be the departmental GTA which is what is happening now. I tried to contact her again during this application process but she never responded. So I don't know if situations have changed. My main objective of studying for a PhD is build research skills and I want to start developing that from day 1. That will even facilitate an early completion of the program. I don't want to be stuck 'building communication skills' and at the end of the first year, I can't even set up a simple experiment and no headway on how to start my research. The other good thing about virginia is that in my 3rd/4th year, I will be required to serve partly as a TA to build communication skills. That way, it's like getting the best of both worlds. Whilst Carnegie Mellon rejected me, I was never going to go there because they are not strong in my research area. In fact, they don't even offer it. I know I might sound silly but I just wanted to test it because Nastydamus was going to apply there and he had my same GRE scores, LOL. The last school is UPitt, no news from that end at all and frankly, I can't be bothered. No, I am not waiting for Ohio. I spent my money and time to apply and I want to know what they eventually decide. It's also a fully funded program through strictly GRAs. In the end, Penn State is higher ranked than UVA but I don't think the difference is so significant. I don't want to join a program that I am not really happy with just because of a 'little bit more name' . And I really hope that I am making the right decision. It's the immensity of my contribution to knowledge that will give me Green Card (if Trump go gree) and a rewarding career in research. Sorry for my long speech this hot Sunday afternoon! 23 Likes 1 Share |

drhopeful: Yea, I see your points and they are valid. Someone told me the environment around Penn State is boring but you must understand that he is a jaiye jaiye kinda guy. Another reason I asked is because UVa appears to be offering more moola (as per fellowship +RA) but I am sure money is not a motivation for you. Who am I kidding Penn State is too big a school for anyone to turn them down and I am almost certain I would have come to the same decision. I emboldened that last part to shout a big amen. It really means alot to me when I get all these support from you guys. I sound like I have strong faith (and yes I do) and I am certain to share my experiences with the house soonest. Haba, you are still waiting for Ohio? But you don already accept Penn state na? What will you do if Ohio accepts you with full-funding as well? Besides, I thought you applied to 6 schools - why aren't you waiting on the decisions of Carnegie Mellon and what's the last one? |

Scholastica16:You can say that again!!!! Shame on UConn.... I would never go there anyways. Maybe they knew that. At least, it gives another person a great chance. So no hard feelings. Honestly, barring the convincing pitches from the virginia POI, if both offers came at the same time, it would be a no-brainer. Penn State all the way, based on rankings. With the current situation, if virginia came first, then that would be it especially that I had no hope for Penn State since no one spoke to me. If both came at the same time, and with the crowning pitch I got yesterday, I would have been swayed towards virginia. It's actually quite interesting that both POIs schooled together through their PhDs and know each other very well. So the virginia Prof had nothing but very nice things to say about the Penn State POI. His speech ended with 'Whatever you decide, trust me, you won't be making a bad decision', LOL. I am also optimistic that by April 15, you will receive offers. You sound like you even have something already and just waiting for it to be official. Congrats in advance!!!! I am still waitlisted in Ohio State which was even one of my top choices; waiting till April 15 to hear what they have to say. 3 Likes |

Would you have taken UVA's offer over Penn state's had they come the same time? You have one leg in the US already. Congrats again. As per me, nothing positive yet but I am still optimistic. 6. John Smith (Circa 1661 To After 1727) John Smith, from England was charged of housebreaking and was sentenced to death by hanging at the Tyburn gallows. When at the Tyburn, he was being hanged, his family and friends tugged at his legs to shorten his suffering but some people held Smith’s feet up for the possibility that he would not die. Apparently it worked. After hanging for a quarter of an hour, people began shouting for a reprieve. Unable to resist public clamouring the authorities granted a reprieve; Smith was cut down and taken to a house in the neighbourhood, where he recovered. He was granted freedom later. Interestingly, he went back to his profession of housebreaking and was convicted three more times. The third time he was caught of theft and was sentenced to transportation (exile) to virginia. 3 Likes

Education / HND And American Universities by sammyscholar(m): 6:53pm On Feb 23, 2017 |
HND and American Universities By Farooq A. Kperogi Twitter: @farooqkperogi In the past few weeks, I have received no fewer than 10 emails from readers of this column asking questions about how the Higher National Diploma (HND) compares with American post-secondary educational qualifications. Does the United States have the HND or its equivalent? If no, do American universities accept HND graduates from Nigeria and elsewhere for graduate studies without requiring them to take remedial courses? Or do American universities also look down on HNDs like Nigerian and British universities do? The straightforward answer, which derives from my personal experience with the American university system, is that the HND is treated almost exactly like a bachelor’s degree here. I know of many Nigerian and Canadian HND graduates who have been admitted to the master’s degree (and later PhD) programs of many American universities without undergoing remedial postgraduate diploma courses. (In any case, American universities don’t offer postgraduate diplomas). The closest and most recent Nigerian HND graduate I know of who is pursuing a master’s degree at a U.S. university as of the time writing this column is a man who graduated from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, with an HND in mass communication. He is, incidentally, studying for his master’s degree in communication at the University of Louisiana—my alma mater. I once narrated the story of an HND graduate from Canada whose qualification was mistaken for a master’s degree at the University of New Orleans. This confusion arose, perhaps, because in American English “diploma” is the generic word for a document certifying the successful completion of any course of study. It’s equivalent to what we call “certificate” in British and Nigerian English. (Even the document certifying the completion of the PhD is called a “diploma” here). Given that background, it’s easy to understand how a “higher diploma” would be mistaken for an advanced degree. But that’s not the only reason why HNDs are not discriminated against in American universities. There are at least four other reasons. First off, let it be known that the American university system has no concept of the HND. Institutions of higher education here just award associate, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees. Associate degrees are awarded only by “community colleges” after two years of study. They are, in some sense, equivalent to our Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or, perhaps, British and Nigerian “A” levels. Universities and colleges award bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD degrees. Although the word “college” is the generic term for what we would recognize as “university” in Nigeria (Americans describe people as “college-educated” if they have at least a bachelor’s degree) schools designated as “colleges,” for the most part, only award bachelor’s degrees. Now, it is also usual for American colleges and universities to have the word “polytechnic” in their names even though they bear no resemblance whatsoever with the British and Nigerian concept of polytechnic. For example, 15 miles north of Atlanta, there is a school called the Southern Polytechnic State University, which awards bachelor’s and master’s degrees in technical and vocational fields, the humanities, the social sciences and the sciences. Other popular American universities with “polytechnic” in their names are, the virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (often just called virginia Tech), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (where Dr. Gabriel Oyibo of GAGUT infamy teaches), California State Polytechnic University, etc. So when somebody comes to America with a qualification from a “polytechnic,” it’s likely to be regarded as the equivalent of a university degree since universities in America, as you have seen, can also be known as “polytechnics.” That’s probably the second reason why HNDs from Nigerian polytechnics and elsewhere are not discriminated against here. The third possible reason why HNDs are not discriminated against by many U.S. universities is because the qualification is awarded after four years of post-secondary education. When you add to this the fact that these “higher diplomas” are given by “polytechnics” (a name often associated with universities here) it’s easy to understand why HNDs are easily accepted as the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree. Now, compare this with the experience of Indians whose bachelor’s degrees from universities are never accepted as the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree precisely because it takes only three years to get a bachelor’s degree in the social sciences and humanities in India. An Indian master’s degree is accepted as the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree. That’s why every Indian here has a master’s degree. Lastly, as I once mentioned on this page, admission to graduate schools in U.S. universities is often the result of a multi-faceted process. The most important of this process, however, is getting an acceptable score in the Graduate Records Examination (GRE). So even if you have an HND but received very high scores in the GRE you have a greater chance to get into graduate programs in U.S. universities than someone with a first-class degree from a university but with low GRE scores. In the UK from where we inherited the tradition of HNDs, polytechnics have been discontinued since 1992. They have all transmuted into universities both in name and curriculum. As you would expect, HND holders still face discrimination in UK universities. In other words, U.S. universities are more welcoming to HND graduates than UK universities are. 4 Likes |

Named after Charles Lynch, an American Revolutionary and virginia planter, who incarcerated loyalist supporters of the British even when he didn’t have proper jurisdiction. Image Source: newafrikan77 During the American Revolution, a virginia Quaker named Charles Lynch headed a county court that imprisoned British loyalists for up to one year. He claimed that this was war necessity even though he had no proper jurisdiction. He was even able to persuade the Congress of the Confederation to exonerate him and his associates. This, however, gave rise to a controversy and the term “Lynch law”, which came to mean punishment without a trial, even though no execution was ever performed.(source)
