Education / Nigerian Girl Becomes 'student Of The Year' In Virginia Tech, USA (photo) by afrifuturestarz(m): 3:01pm On Apr 20, 2016
Nneoma Nwankwo has become “virginia Tech Undergraduate Student of the Year” – This prestigious award recognizes undergraduate students who have achieved overall excellence during their career at the university – Nwankwo studied the negative effects of poor menstrual hygiene management on the education and socio-economic empowerment of girls in Africa

Nneoma Nwankwo from Lagos is making all Nigerians proud as she has become “Undergraduate Student of the Year” in virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, popularly known as virginia Tech. According to the information on the official website of virginia Tech, the young girl will graduate in May with a degree in political science in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Nwankwo is minoring in public and urban affairs and creative writing. She is also engaged in domestic and international service and research on issues facing girls and women in developing nations. “At virginia Tech, I have been challenged to live in service to others. I have learned how to lead boldly as I pursue my global development interests,” she said.

The girl noted that by serving those around her, she create a meaningful life for herself. “virginia Tech Undergraduate Student of the Year” award recognizes undergraduate students who have achieved overall excellence during their career at the university. Only students with exceptional and balanced achievement in academics, leadership, and service can win the award.

In autumn 2013, Nwankwo undertook an independent study supervised by Ralph Hall, the assistant professor of Urban Affairs and Planning, School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies.

Her research topic was negative effects of poor menstrual hygiene management (MHM) on the education and socio-economic empowerment of girls in underserved areas of sub-Saharan Africa. “Nneoma’s ability to lead her own research in Nigeria and develop and deliver workshops on MHM and adolescent sexuality provide some insight into her unique set of skills and capabilities. “I believe Nneoma’s focus on MHM in schools is one of the most important issues facing young women in developing countries.

Her future research and engagement in this area is likely to be transformative for her and for those she is able to touch,” Hall said. Speaking about her research, Nwankwo said: “For me, it was necessary for women’s voices to be heard; thus, in Nigeria, I conducted focus groups and workshops with young women.

In the Republic of Niger, I participated in the Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council and United Nations Women menstrual hygiene trainings, which were aimed at lobbying national policymakers to establish MHM as a top priority in water and sanitation legislation. Through these unique experiences, I found passion in working in the service of others.”

Despite being so young, Nwankwo has already held many leadership positions across campus. She served as the fundraising chair for the African Students Association and raised money for a local charity in Ethiopia.

The virginia Tech Undergraduate Student of the Year award recognizes a graduating student who has achieved overall excellence during his or her undergraduate career at the university. The recognition is the most prestigious non-academic undergraduate award given at virginia Tech and is awarded to a student who has exceptional and balanced achievement in academics, leadership, and service. The recipient exemplifies the qualities and values important to a virginia Tech education, captured in the university motto, Ut Prosim.

In fall 2013, Nwankwo undertook an independent study supervised by Ralph Hall, assistant professor of Urban Affairs and Planning, School of Public and International Affairs in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies. She studied the negative effects of poor menstrual hygiene management (MHM) on the education and socio-economic empowerment of girls in underserved areas of sub-Saharan Africa.

Her future research and engagement in this area is likely to be transformative for her and for those she is able to touch.”

In 2014, Nwankwo was awarded the Austin Michelle Cloyd Fellowship for Social Justice for her proposal to pursue service-oriented MHM research in West Africa. Nwankwo said, “For me, it was necessary for women’s voices to be heard; thus, in Nigeria, I conducted focus groups and workshops with young women.

Last fall, Nwankwo presented her research findings at the Women and Gender Discussion Series organized by virginia Tech’s Office of International Research, Education, and Development. Her research has been published by virginia Tech’s Innovation for Agricultural Training and Education, and she is a guest-lecturer on MHM in postgraduate classes in virginia Tech’s programs in urban affairs and planning and women's and gender studies.

“Through these avenues,” she said, “I raise awareness about MHM on campus, contribute to research geared toward creating solutions in the field, and motivate students and faculty to work toward the improvement of women’s rights worldwide.”

Nwankwo has held many leadership positions across campus. She served as the fundraising chair for the African Students Association and raised money for a local charity in Ethiopia. Fluent in English and Igbo and conversationally proficient in French, Yoruba, and Swahili, Nwankwo is a coach at the virginia Tech Writing Center and was international columnist for the Collegiate Times student-run newspaper. She earned an honorable mention in the 2015 Steger Poetry Prize competition. She was recipient of the Overton R. Johnson Scholarship and the Accenture Scholarship.

“I’ve had a ton of impactful experiences at virginia Tech, but I think the relationships I have had with professors, particularly in the English, urban planning and political science departments, have been incredibly meaningful to me,” said Nwankwo.

Nwankwo has accepted a full-time position at Citibank in New York City. She will continue to conduct research on MHM.

The Undergraduate Student of the Year award recipient is selected by a committee of students, faculty, and administrators from across the academic colleges and the Division of Student Affairs. The division sponsors and administers the annual award, now in its 64th year.

Education / Make Money From Tapered, Flexible Sleeve For Inserting A Silicone Breast Implant by Nobody: 7:11am On Apr 05, 2016
http://www.jaysciencetech.com/2016/04/make-money-from-tapered-flexible-sleeve.html

Deadline: June 30, 2016
Award: $2,000 for each accepted prior art citation

The Seeker is looking for prior art citations from sources that have been publicly disclosed or described prior to December 7, 2007 that clearly show or describe a tapered, flexible sleeve suitable for inserting into the human body.

Specifically, the Seeker wants information from patent or non-patent documents prior to December 7, 2007 that reference a prior art that that very clearly show the details that are needed to determine that the sleeve is tapered with a first opening larger than a second opening. Such a tapered sleeve is described and illustrated in patent (US 8,211,173). The figures below are from this patent:

Figure 1 shows a tapered conical sleeve (10) with the first opening (12) at a larger end of the sleeve and a smaller opening (14). Figures 2 and 3 show the sleeve containing an implant (20) being moved through the smaller opening (14). All images are from US 8,211,173.
For this search, relevant citations of greatest interest will relate to photographs or drawings of the sleeves that are described in the Mladick references (1, 2, 3). The published photographs in article 1 are not sufficiently clear to show the tapered conical sleeve. The other two (2, 3) Mladick references are letters in journals and do not have any images. A reference with the sleeve openings being the same size may be of interest but this is not optimal.
Information can be from primary or secondary sources and in any language. Submissions of non-English information will be reviewed more rapidly if you provide an English translation of the relevant passages.
The information will most likely be found in publically disclosed sources including but not limited to: scientific literature, presentations, public lectures, oral proceedings, conference proceedings, posters, research reports or proposals, citations, laboratory manuals, or publically available thesis.
Published work from major medical research or scientific publications is less likely to provide a successful solution to this Challenge because these have already been extensively explored. \
To be considered, Submissions must:
Have been be available or dated prior to December 7, 2007; and
Show a clear illustration or clearly describes a tapered, flexible sleeve with a one opening larger than the other opening.

Key terms, key phrases:
sleeve, funnel, tapered sleeve

I have admits from them but sadly no funding from any yet except a miracle happens tomorrow..LSU said no funding at all..the Grad coord of UNCC said he will put me in mind for a TA if there is a vacant position, Utah has not made funding decision yet..WVU and Maryland' s Grad Cord are not replying mail..i am TIRED!
Well it was basically from individual faculty members who are interested in recruiting MS/PhD Student for a specific projects. I personally think talking to faculty members prior to application is the best way to go.
It is just like the faculty member sending your documents to grad school.

Heart-broken! Got a rejection mail from univ of rhode island, Msc mech eng. So devastated right now, as it's the only school I have applied to. Now, I'm not even motivated to apply to any other. However, I cant imagine my dream of studying in the US forfeited. Cant just jump on any school's page now to apply. Suggestions on schools that are safe for my profile would be appreciated. GRE: 300, CGPA: 3.63/5.00.

@ lobito007, I can understand what you are passing through but don't let it weigh you down. In my own case, the admission letter from University of Louisiana at Lafayette came first before denial from the next four school I applied to. I would still share my story so that people can learn a thing or two. I am still awaiting decision from other school before sharing testimony grin. I would have suggested University of Louisiana at Lafayette, West virginia University, Montana Tech of the University of Montana and Missouri University of Science and Technology. Those are safe schools for engineering even though they are excellent schools too. Unfortunately, the deadline for the first three has passed. You can apply to Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST). MST deadline is April 1st for International students but check and be sure you meet their requirements. Just a suggestion, if you have to do this all over again, try and apply to atleast 6 schools. Make sure you have about three safe schools that you believe your profile meets their requirement and apply early between September to November of the previous year. December is already late for schools with rolling admission. Admission is really competitive this period.

Education / Nigerian Professor Delivers Ground-breaking Research At University Of Sussex by philchudi: 10:29pm On Feb 21, 2016
On Thursday, 11th February 2016, the Sussex Nigerian Society hosted Professor Isa Hussaini Marte, a Professor of Pharmacology, University of Maiduguri, a visiting Professor, University of virginia, USA and a Fellow of the Nigerian Academy of Science.
In an event titled “Meet the Nigerian Scientist” organised by the Society, Professor Isa discussed with the Nigerian students in Sussex about their discovery of Nigerian traditional herbs that show substantial efficacy against cancer, better than the currently used cancer drugs.
He described to our community how he moved to the US in the late 90’s after his Ph.D. and eventually developed to a competent scientist that received over $5 million of research funds for research into cancer.
Prof. Isa came to the University of Sussex on invitation by the School of Lifesciences of the University, to present his team’s discovery of the potential anti-cancer traditional herbs.
On Friday, 12th February, he was received warmly by the Vice – Chancellor of the University of Sussex, the Head of School of Lifesciences and other Professors, following which he was given a gift by the Vice – Chancellor.
Later in the Friday evening, Professor Isa delivered his research findings at the University’s Genome Damage and Stability Centre to experts and young scientists, in a talk that was brilliantly fascinating, titled – “Exploitation of medicinal plant compounds in the search for novel cancer therapeutic agents.”.
His talk explained how his team investigate the scientific rationale for the tradition uses of Nigerian Medicinal plants.
How they now discover novel plants with anti-cancer properties.
They have isolated and characterised the compounds from these plant sources and tested them against many cancer cell lines.
He said “We are working to develop cancer therapy from Nigerian traditional plants. We have conducted an extensive screening of many plants with anti-cancer properties, tested them in cell and animal models. Our research has created an evidence base to demonstrate that eight naturally growing medicinal plants in Nigeria have strong anti-cancer properties, especially against breast cancer.”
Professor Isa also praised the “world-class facilities” at the University of Sussex and discussed possible collaboration with the School of Lifesciences regarding research.
The Nigerian Ag. High Commissioner in London, also attended Professor Isa’s research talk and was very impressed that such research is conducted in Nigeria.
He praised Professor Isa and encouraged him to continue his research as it shows promise for solving world problem and positively influences the global reputation of Nigeria.
The Ag. High Commissioner also held a Question and Answer session over Lunch with the Nigerian students in Sussex where he advised them to work hard in their studies and acquire useful skills that can drive the development of Nigeria.
Inspired by Prof. Isa’s talk, the Sussex Nigeria Society have launched a campaign to raise money for the Breast Cancer Association of Nigerian “BRECAN” to help disadvantaged women access free clinical breast examination and towards BRECAN’s awareness-raising campaigns.
Details of Professor Isa’s visit has been published in the weekly bulletin of the University of Sussex “Nigerian High Commissioner & cancer specialist visit Sussex.
