*HOW TO GROW BANANA 4 BUSINESS*


Banana is a commercial Food & cash crop grown & highly consumed in Nigeria
Almost on a daily basis, people eat (banana) as a staple food and it has greatly contributed to food security in most parts of the country.

A bunch of normal banana goes for (3000 to 4000) depending on its size. This automatically proves that its a real cash crop to the farmer.

I will take you through the steps of Establishment & Management of a commercial banana farm ( 1acre Banana project)

**STEPS TO BANANA FARM. ESTABLISHMENT***

1. Land preparation

This involves ,clearing trees and bushes in your farm,this can be done by slashing or using herbicides to kill the weeds.Its always better to clear your land a month prior to planting. After clearing your land ,you can choose to either plough or go to pegging straight away.

2. Pegging

This is a process of marking all your planting holes , you measure and put pegs to mark where the holes will be , this helps you to have a smart farm in lines and proper spacing.In one acre you can use a spacing of 10ft by 10ft and this should give us over 400 planting holes.

3. Soil Testing

Its very important to test your soil and know its status , know what your soil has and doesn't have.
Test for availability of Nitrogen (N) , Phosphorus (P), Potassium (K) , Organic matter and the PH levels.
Before you apply any fertilizer ,you must know what lacks in your soil. PH is the level of acidity and alkalinity of soil ,if your soil is so Acidic or so alkaline ,you need to know how to neutralise it by using agents like lime and wood ash.

4. Making Holes.

After Pegging ,we now go straight to making holes for our banana.Hole size should be 3ft wide and 2ft deep.
It can either be in a square shape or circular shape.
As you dig up the hole ,put the top soil(from the 1st feet) on one side and the sub soil(from the second feet) on the other side. The top soil is normal rich in organic matter and is normally black loam.
The sub soil is normally red in color and doesn't contain enough organic matter.

5. Mix Top Soil with Manure & Refill the holes.

After making the holes ,now get a basin of manure like cow dung and mix it with the top black soil and then put back the mixed soil in the hole.This time don't fill the hole to the brim. Leave at least half a feet on top unfilled.

6. Time to get your Planting Material (Suckers).

After preparing the holes ,its time to look for good, clean and disease free suckers .We at SEEDWORLD LTD provide you with good quality disease free suckers for high productivity.You can buy normal *Sword suckers* & Combs from a clean mother plantation.
Or you can buy Potted banana plantlets from *Macro-Propagation* system.The choice is yours .
You can as well use .You need about 444 suckers in one acre.

7. Planting.

After getting good suckers, now is the time to plant them in your prepared Holes.Place your sucker in the middle of the hole and cover gently with soil ,leave the hole in a basin like shape to allow easy trapping of water.

8. Management.

After setting up your plantation ,you now need to know the management practices for the best output.

For weather related reasons, Nigeria does not produce apples even though there has been a steady increase in its demand by middle class and large retail outlets.

Many still believe that apple cannot grow in Nigerian. But every year, Nigerians spend millions of dollars importing the fruit from South Africa and other European countries.

The reason Nigeria spends so much to import apple is not far fetched. People often eat apple raw but it can also be found in many prepared foods and drinks.

And there are many health benefits thought to result from eating apples.Statistics indicate that Nigeria imported 1,882 tonnes, 7,857 tonnes and 32,317 tonnes of apples between 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively from South Africa.

Industry watchers said these figures have increased tremendously in the last four years as millions of dollars is expended on importation of apples.

However, apart from statistics available in 2011, 2012, 2013, there is no recent data to indicate amount of apples imported and consumed in Nigeria, but large numbers of apples are imported and brought in through the nation’s borders. But the demand for the product continues to increase indicating that there is a sustainable market for apples in Nigeria, which is largely being driven by the increasing preference for fresh fruit over processed fruit.

It is clearly stated that apples that are sold at shops, in hotels and Nigerian markets have been harvested before they get ripe and they take weeks and months before getting here. Even the apples are injected somehow to preserve them.

There is good news now for farmers who want to venture into this business. Today, there is a specie of apple called semi-arid apple, also known as ‘wambugu’ apple, which matches Nigeria’s weather conditions.

This basically means that the apple can grow and do well in Nigeria, as government is looking for a way of reducing import bills.The semi-arid apple was developed by Peter Wambugu, a man who used to work as a mechanic in the streets of Nyeri, central Kenya, now a trained agriculture expert.

The semi-arid apple can grow to climate of up to 36°, which is within Nigeria’s weather conditions because the apple specifically is for hot and warm areas and it has a lifespan of 50 years. The apple can grow in any West African country and anywhere in the world.

The semi-arid apple bears up to 500 to 1000 fruits on each tree every season and it has two seasons in a year, starting between July, August, December and January.


This apple won the best apple in the world that is able to grow anywhere in any climate and soil. The apples are organically grown and thus, they need good manure and water for them to grow better. They can grow to climate of up to 36°c. The apple takes nine months to first fruiting and one acre requires 310 plants.”

On planting. When you get your seedling, allow 3m by 3m or 8.5ft x 8.5ft spacing from one plant to another. Planting depth is 2fts by 2fts deep by 2fts hole .Mix 1 bucket of manure with topsoil and return back to the hole later; pour 20 liters of water mix with the soil well and plant the seedling! Later do mulching! For pest control, since this apple has very few pests, it would be able to grow with very minimal maintenance. Climate and soil type are no problem for the semi-arid apple variety.They grow in both loamy soil and sandy loamy soil.However ,very clay and waterlogged areas should be avoided.We have a transplanting video guide and PDF guide for those interested in buying the seedlings for planting in home garden and the open field.

*STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE FOR STARTING YOUR NURSERY SEEDS USING TAKE AWAY CONTAINERS OR SEED TRAYS AS SHOW IN THE PICS BELOW *

1. Thoroughly moisten the seed-starting medium(cocopeat) or Soil (Nursery bed already prepared) with water and then fill the containers to within 1/2" of the top. Firm the grow medium but don't compact it.

2. Place two or three seeds into each small container or each cell of a seed tray . Cover the seed with about 1/4" of soil and gently firm it over the seeds but do not Compact it .

3. Water to ensure good seed-to-mix contact. You can use a perforated bottle water lid to spray them or get a mini sprayer of 2litre to spray water over the top. You don't need to soak the soil, just moisten the top layer.

4. Place the cups or trays in a warm spot or cover with a nylon to great some level of heat until they sprout out,then you remove it . At this point, the seeds don't need light.

5. Keep the mix moist but not soaking wet. If your seed-starting system has a greenhouse top, use it to help hold moisture.

6. Check grow medium daily. As soon as you see sprouts, remove the covering and place them in a light reflective sunny area ,pls note not on direct sun or under grow lights, keeping the lights just an inch or two above the top of the plants.
