* 6 MUST TIPS FOR GROWING TOMATOES* 1. SUNLIGHT. Tomatoes require a minimum of 8 hours of continuous sunlight each day. 2. TEMPERATURE . Tomatoes need 3 to 4 months of warm, clear, fairly dry weather to produce best. Tomatoes need consistent night temperatures between 55°F and 75°F to set fruit. (A few varieties will set fruit at lower or higher temperatures.) Fruit will not color properly when night temperatures stay above 85°F, and plants will quit growing when temperatures go above 95°F. 3. CONTINUOUS AND EVEN WATERING. Keep the soil evenly moist–not too wet and not too dry. Too much water will drown the plant; too little water will stop fruit production. Test soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil–if it comes out dry, it’s time to water; if it comes out wet, hold off. During periods of drought deep water tomatoes once a week. A constant, even supply of water can prevent blossom end rot, but too much water will cause it. 4. CONTINUOUS FEEDING (NUTRIENTS) Tomatoes are high feeders. Prepare the tomato-growing bed with well-rotted garden compost and a trowelful of aged manure added to the soil ahead of time ; where each plant will grow. Add a trowelful of bone meal into the bottom of each hole–the extra phosphorus will speed ripening. Too much nitrogen will give you abundant foliage but delay ripening. Add nitrogen when the top leaves turn yellow and the stem become deep purple. 5.USE LOOSE, WELL-DRAINED SOIL. But almost any garden soil will grow tomatoes. Sandy loam is best for early tomatoes. Heavy clay loam is ideal for late tomatoes. Amend the soil with aged compost before planting at least two weeks to transplant after nursery . Tomatoes prefer a soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0, just below neutral in acidity. 6. PROTECT LEAVES AND ROOTS. Protect the tomato plant from extremes of temperature–cold and hot, strong winds, weeds, pests and diseases. Transplant 6 to 8 weeks old tomato seedlings in the garden/field . If transplanted sooner, tomatoes must be protected from cold temperatures with hot caps or plastic tunnels. Place tomatoes in the garden/field where they will be protected from drying winds. . Examine plants often to get rid of tomato hornworms and other pest early. Avoid fungal and bacterial diseases by watering at the base of plants and rotating tomatoes to new beds each year. Where summer temperatures exceed 95°F, shade cloth protection will protect leaves and fruit. NB : Incase you need shade net crop protection material, pls do well to contact SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 (Whatsapp) for details on that. |
Gdeven all,we shall be taking our first crop guide on some tomatoe tips and facts we must know as we begin the new year.First we shall try to explore some health benefits of tomatoes.Like it is said ,HEALTH IS WEALTH.So we must first take care our health before any farming can take place.... *SOME FACTS ABOUT TOMATOES YOU MUST KNOW AS IT RELATES TO YOUR HEALTH IN 2019* Tomatoes are full of health enhancing properties, now discover how the "humble " tomato can improve your health. Tomatoes are loaded with many, many health benefits. In fact, they are incredibly versatile and can be prepared in a seemingly endless number of dishes, as well as being great to eat alone. Keep reading to find out why you need to stop neglecting tomatoes as a part of your regular balanced diet. *What are the benefits inherent from eating tomatoes?* 1. Tomatoes are good for your skin./Tomatoes contain a high level of lycopene, which is a substance that is used in some of the more pricy facial cleansers that are available for purchase over-the-counter. If you want to try tomatoes for skin care, you need to start with about eight to twelve tomatoes. Peel the tomatoes and then place the skin on your face with inside of the tomato touching your skin. Leave the tomatoes on your face for a minimum of ten minutes, then wash. Your face will feel clean and shiny. Some redness may occur, but should fade with time. 2. Tomatoes help prevent several types of cancer. A number of studies have been conducted that indicate that the high levels of lycopene in tomatoes works to reduce your chances of developing prostate, colorectal and stomach cancer. Lycopene is a natural antioxidant that works effectively to slow the growth of cancerous cells. Cooked tomatoes produce even more lycopene, so go ahead and cook up a batch of your favourite food. 3. Tomatoes help maintain strong bones. Tomatoes contain a considerable amount of calcium and Vitamin K. Both of these nutrients are essential in strengthening and performing minor repairs on the bones as well as the bone tissue. 4. Tomatoes provide essential antioxidants. Tomatoes contain a great deal of Vitamin A and Vitamin C. This is primarily because these vitamins and beta-carotene work as antioxidants to neutralize harmful free radicals in the blood. Free radicals in the blood stream are dangerous because it may lead to cell damage. Remember, the redder the tomato you eat is, the more beta-carotene it contains. In addition, you also want to keep in mind that cooking destroys the Vitamin C, so for these benefits, the tomatoes need to be eaten raw. 5. Tomatoes are good for your heart. *INTRODUCING STAKING ROPES FOR CLIMBING PLANTS*. *What is the need for Staking plants*? One way to improve yield when cultivating vegetables is staking plants. Vegetables benefit a lot from staking and they also grow well. The process can be a little bit tedious but the end result is encouraging. You will see your crops blossoming and producing healthy fruits throughout the growing season. You can improvise and use any type of material you want. The most important thing is that the stakes should be sturdy and driven well into the ground so that they can support the weight of the fruiting plants. At least a foot or more of the stakes can be driven into the ground. Ensure that the support is strong enough to bear the weight of the fruit and can also withstand heavy winds or rain. There are lots of benefits of staking climbing plant. A little understanding of these benefits will encourage you to consider the system instead of allowing crops to run on the ground. *BENEFIT OF STAKING* 1. Increase in yield: The most important reason for staking crops is to increase yield. Studies carried out in different locations shows that growing crops vertically increases yield three times than when they are allowed to run on the ground. 2. Maintain fruit quality : A healthy fruit without blemishes attracts better price. That’s why it is good to do everything to prevent their fruits from damages. Damages can occur when fruits are allowed to run on the ground. They are exposed to insect attacks and other creeping things.Staking keeps the health of your crops, avoiding insects, or any damage affecting your crops. 3. Disease-free plants : Every farmer wish to make sure their plants are free from diseases. This can be achieved by staking crops rather than allowing them to run on the ground. They can easily contract diseases when allowed to remain and run on the ground. But when they are raised up with stakes, they experience better air circulation which reduces the incidence and spread of diseases. 4. Exposure to sunlight : Crops like tomatoes need as much sun as they can possibly get during the day. And for such crops, staking exposes a greater part of the leaves’ surface to sunlight which they need to generate energy and grow well. 5. Staking helps your crops to get a better growth and good health. 6.Staking helps you cultivate more crops in limited space. There is no point looking for an extra piece of land to add to the one you have when you can simply double your yield. Staking allows you to utilize limited space well. 7. Staking makes harvesting, spraying, fertilizer application and watering easier. You can explore the various methods used in staking plants. You can also get creative but make sure the stakes are sturdy enough to support the weight of the fruits as they grow bigger in size. AVAILABLE STAKING NET SPECIFICATION * 100m x 2m per roll of 10 x 20cm net holes. * 30 rolls required per acre. For purchase of staking materials such as UV nets ,do call SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 (WhatsApp) Email : seedworldintegratedconceptltd@gmail.com

INTRODUCING THE ENGLISH BREAD FRUIT. Breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) is a species of flowering tree in the mulberry and jackfruit family (Moraceae) originating in the South Pacific and eventually spreading to the rest of Oceania. British and French navigators introduced a few Polynesian seedless varieties to Caribbean islands during the late 18th century, and today it is grown in some 90 countries throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Ocean, the Caribbean, Central America and Africa. Its name is derived from the texture of the moderately ripe fruit when cooked, similar to freshly baked bread Andrews having a potato-like flavor. *DESCRIPTION OF THE BREAD FRUIT* Breadfruit trees grow to a height of 26 m (85 ft). The large and thick leaves are deeply cut into pinnate lobes. All parts of the tree yield latex, which is useful for boat caulking. The trees are monoecious, with male and female flowers growing on the same tree. The male flowers emerge first, followed shortly afterward by the female flowers. The latter grow into capitula, which are capable of pollination just three days later. Pollination occurs mainly by fruit bats, but cultivated varieties produce fruit without pollination. The compound, false fruit develops from the swollen perianth, and originates from 1,500-2,000 flowers visible on the skin of the fruit as hexagon-like disks. Breadfruit is one of the highest-yielding food plants, with a single tree producing up to 200 or more grapefruit-sized fruits per season, requiring limited care. In the South Pacific, the trees yield 50 to 150 fruits per year, usually round, oval or oblong weighing 0.25–6 kg. Productivity varies between wet and dry areas. Studies in Barbados indicate a reasonable potential of 16–32 short tons per hectare (6.5–12.9 short ton/acre). The ovoid fruit has a rough surface, and each fruit is divided into many achenes, each achene surrounded by a fleshy perianth and growing on a fleshy receptacle. Most selectively bred cultivars have seedless fruit, whereas seeded varieties are grown mainly for their edible seeds. Breadfruit is usually propagated using root cuttings. Breadfruit is closely related to the breadnut, from which it might have been naturally selected. It is noticeably similar in appearance to its relative of the same genus, the jackfruit (Artocarpus heterophyllus). Breadfruit has hundreds of varieties and thousands of common names varying according to its geographic distribution, and is cultivated in some 90 countries. *BREAD FRUIT USES* *FOOD* Breadfruit is a staple food in many tropical regions. Most breadfruit varieties produce fruits throughout the year. Both ripe and unripe fruits have culinary uses, but unripe breadfruit is cooked before consumption. Before being eaten, the fruits are roasted, baked, fried or boiled. When cooked, the taste of moderately ripe breadfruit is described as potato-like, or similar to freshly baked bread. Because breadfruit trees usually produce large crops at certain times of the year, preservation of the harvested fruit is an issue. One traditional preservation technique is to bury peeled and washed fruits in a leaf-lined pit where they ferment over several weeks and produce a sour, sticky paste. So stored, the product may last a year or more, and some pits are reported to have produced edible contents more than 20 years later. Fermented breadfruit mash goes by many names such as mahr, ma, masi, furo, and bwiru, among others. Breadfruit can be eaten once cooked, or can be further processed into a variety of other foods. A common product is a mixture of cooked or fermented breadfruit mash mixed with coconut milk and baked in banana leaves. Whole fruits can be cooked in an open fire, then cored and filled with other foods, such as coconut milk, sugar and butter, cooked meats, or other fruits. The filled fruit can be cooked further so the flavor of the filling permeates the flesh of the breadfruit.. *INTRODUCING THE MAKKA KUSA WHITE YAM VARIETY FROM ABUJA (FCT)* The white yam (Dioscorea rotundata) known locally as “Makka kusa” (meaning Mecca is near in Hausa language) is a variety of yam that farmers believe would guarantee or make them realize their dream of travelling to Mecca on pilgrimage after one harvest. This is because it is a high yield variety, white and with a smooth surface and sweet taste. This variety is good, and can yield a five-kilo tuber, when planted and well managed . It produces big tubers, and consumers enjoy it in whatever form whether cooked, fried or pounded. The yam variety has high market demand as can be evident by the large inflow of people and passers by into Bwari to buy the produce for consumption. Asala and Ebukiba (2016) in their study of Profitability of yam production in Southern Guinea Savanna zone of Nigeria discovered that Makka kusa was, among other white yam varieties, highly preferred for its taste in Benue, Nassarawa, Abuja FCT and Niger, while Gbakumo (another white yam variety) was most preferred in Kwara and Kogi States. Interested in the yam sett (Seed) of this variety do contact SEEDWORLD LTD 07082638957 (WhatsApp) for order placement or booking.

COCONUT VARIETIES. Coconut genetic improvement lead to the development of different varieties of coconut which yield 80-100 nuts per palm per year under proper management as against 30-45 nuts from the unimproved coconut. These include: 1. WEST AFRICAN TALL : This variety produces 80-100 nuts/ palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 3.3 metric tons per hectare per year. 2. DWARF GREEN : This flowers 3-4 years after yield establishment and produces 81 nuts/palm/year. From studies and studies elsewhere, this variety has now been proven to be resistant to the Lethal Yellowing Disease of coconut. It is therefore now being advocated for combating the disease. This variety is also used for ornamental purposes 3. HYBRID COCONUT : This is a cross between the dwarf variety and the tall. The hybrid flowers 5 years after planting and produces 94 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 3.5 tonnes/ha/year. 4. MALAYAN DWARF YELLOW : This is an introduction from Malaysia which flowers 3 years after planting and produces 84 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 2.1 tonnes/ha/year. This variety is used mainly for ornamental purposes. 5. MALAYAN DWARF RED : This is also an introduction from Malaysia. It flowers about 3 years after field planting and produces 91 nuts/palm/year with an estimated copra yield of 2.3 tonnes/ ha/year. This variety is also mainly used for ornamental purposes.
