**SEED FORMATION AND GERMINATION CONDITIONS /REQUIREMENTS*

**SEED FORMATION*

Male plants release pollen, which fertilize ovaries. The fertilized ovaries develop into seeds, which can then be distributed to make new plants. As the fertilized ovaries develop, a surplus of carbohydrates and proteins are stored inside the seed. This will serve as food for the plant until it can develop leaves. Next, the fertilized plant ovaries develop the hardened coat we see as the outside of seeds to protect them against harsh environmental conditions. The seeds then can be carried away by wind or animals to create new plants.


**SEED GERMINATION**

After the seed has made it to a new location and is covered with dirt, it can begin germination. Germination is the process of seeds developing into new plants. First, environmental conditions must trigger the seed to grow. Usually, this is determined by how deep the seed is planted, water availability, and temperature. When water is plentiful, the seed fills with water in a process called imbibition. The water activates special proteins, called enzymes, that begin the process of seed growth. First the seed grows a root to access water underground. Next, the shoots, or growth above ground, begin to appear. The seed sends a shoot towards the surface, where it will grow leaves to harvest energy from the sun. The leaves continue to grow towards the light source in a process called photomorphogenesis.

*INFLUENCING FACTORS**

Several factors influence how, seeds germinate. The most important factors are water availability, temperature and sunlight. Water is crucial to seed germination. The seed must go through imbibition to activate root growth. However, too much water can be a bad thing, as most gardeners know. When a plant is still growing underground, during root formation, it cannot use the sun to make food like most grown plants do. It must rely on the stored food inside the seed, and oxygen from the environment to make energy. If the soil is too soggy, there will not be enough oxygen and the plant will not thrive. Think about a person being kept underwater. Such wouldn't last too long.

Temperature is also an important factor. Some seeds germinate when it is cold, such as plants in northern environments. Other seeds only germinate when the weather reaches a certain temperature, which is why we see so much plant growth in spring temperate climates. Other seeds only germinate after extreme temperatures.

INTRODUCTION.

Charmingly fragrant rosemary herb is the perfect potherb to have in your kitchen garden. It is one of the recognized herbs for its noteworthy health benefiting phytonutrients, antioxidants, and essential oils.

Rosemary belongs to the family of Lamiaceae, of the genus, Rosmarinus. Its botanical name is Rosmarinus officinalis.

The herb is thought to be originated in the Mediterranean region as a wild, strewing evergreen perennial shrub. Today, it is grown in nearly all parts of the Mediterranean area and Asia Minor as a major culinary herb.

Rosemary flourishes in well-drained, alkaline soil. It prefers sunny condition but at the same time needs shelter from gusty winds. The plant reaches about 1.5-3 meters in height. Its bushy stems and downy young shoots are covered with about 1 inch long, narrow, needle-like aromatic leaves; dark green above and grayish underneath. The plant bears short racemes of small sea-blue flowers appearing in early summer.

The plant parts; flowers and leaves have a fragrance that is pungently aromatic and somewhat camphoraceous (camphor-like).

Apart from culinary and medicinal purpose, traditionally rosemary shoots, flowers, and leaves are being used in festivals and wedding ceremonies to decorate banquet halls as incense to ward off bad influences.


HEALTH BENEFITS OF ROSEMARY HERB .


1. Rosemary leaves contain certain phytochemical (plant-derived) compounds that are known to have disease preventing and health promoting properties.

2. The herb parts, especially flower tops include phenolic antioxidant rosmarinic acid as well as numerous health benefiting volatile essential oils such as cineol, camphene, borneol, bornyl acetate, α-pinene, etc. These compounds are known to have rubefacient (counterirritant), anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, anti-fungal and antiseptic properties.

3. Rosemary leaves provide just 131 calories per 100 g and contain no cholesterol. Apart from nutrients, this humble herb contains many noteworthy non-nutrient components such as dietary fiber (37% of RDA).

4. The herb is exceptionally rich in many B-complex groups of vitamin, such as folic acid, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin. It is one of the herbs containing high levels of folates; providing about 109 µg per 100 g (about 27% of RDA). Folates are essential DNA synthesis and when given during the peri-conception period can help prevent neural tube defects in the newborns.

5. Rosemary herb carries great amounts of vitamin A, 2924 IU per 100 g or about 97% of RDA. A few leaves a day in the diet, would contribute enough of this vitamin. Vitamin-A is known to have antioxidant properties and is essential for vision. It is also required for maintaining healthy mucosa and skin. Consumption of natural foods rich in vitamin A is known to help the body protect from lung and oral cavity cancers.

6. Fresh rosemary leaves are a good source of antioxidant vitamin, vitamin-C; containing about 22 mg per 100 g, about 37% of RDA. It is essential for collagen synthesis in the human body. Collagen is the main structural protein in the body required for maintaining the integrity of blood vessels, skin, organs, and bones. Regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin-C helps the body protect from scurvy; develop resistance against infectious agents (boosts immunity) and help scavenge harmful, pro-inflammatory free radicals from the body.

7. Rosemary herb parts, whether fresh or dried, are a rich source of minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids, which helps control heart rate and blood pressure. The human body uses manganese as a cofactor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase.

8. The herb is an excellent source of iron, contains 6.65 mg/100 g of fresh leaves (about 83% of RDA). Iron, being a component of hemoglobin inside the red blood cells, determines the oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.

For weather related reasons, Nigeria does not produce apples even though there has been a steady increase in its demand by middle class and large retail outlets.

Many still believe that apple cannot grow in Nigerian. But every year, Nigerians spend millions of dollars importing the fruit from South Africa and other European countries.

The reason Nigeria spends so much to import apple is not far fetched. People often eat apple raw but it can also be found in many prepared foods and drinks.

And there are many health benefits thought to result from eating apples.Statistics indicate that Nigeria imported 1,882 tonnes, 7,857 tonnes and 32,317 tonnes of apples between 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively from South Africa.

Industry watchers said these figures have increased tremendously in the last four years as millions of dollars is expended on importation of apples.

However, apart from statistics available in 2011, 2012, 2013, there is no recent data to indicate amount of apples imported and consumed in Nigeria, but large numbers of apples are imported and brought in through the nation’s borders. But the demand for the product continues to increase indicating that there is a sustainable market for apples in Nigeria, which is largely being driven by the increasing preference for fresh fruit over processed fruit.

It is clearly stated that apples that are sold at shops, in hotels and Nigerian markets have been harvested before they get ripe and they take weeks and months before getting here. Even the apples are injected somehow to preserve them.

There is good news for farmers who want to venture into this money spinning fruit. Today, there is a specie of apple called semi-arid apple, also known as ‘wambugu’ apple, which matches Nigeria’s weather conditions.

This basically means that the apple can grow and do well in Nigeria, as government is looking for a way of reducing import bills.The semi-arid apple was developed by Peter Wambugu, a man who used to work as a mechanic in the streets of Nyeri, central Kenya, now a trained agriculture expert.

The semi-arid apple can grow to climate of up to 36°, which is within Nigeria’s weather conditions because the apple specifically is for hot and warm areas and it has a lifespan of 50 years. The apple can grow in any West African country and anywhere in the world.

The semi-arid apple bears up 500 to 2000 fruits on each tree every season and it has two seasons in a year, starting between July, August, December and January.

The Chief Executive Officer, Wambugu Apple Farm, Peter Wambugu, said the semi-arid apple variety is a kind of apple that does best in hot and warm areas, which makes it different from any other imported apple, saying it requires only manure and water for it to grow well.

According to him, the semi-arid apple variety has a very good income as the harvest season comes every nine to 13 months.He explained: “I began this farming 40 years ago. Till now, even my children are still farming apples.

This apple won the best apple in the world that is able to grow anywhere in any climate and soil. The apples are organically grown and thus, they need good manure and water for them to grow better. They can grow to climate of up to 36°c. The apple takes nine to 14 months to mature to fruiting and one acre requires 310 plants.”

On planting. When you get your seedling, allow 5m by 5m spacing from one plant to another. 2fts by 2fts deep 2fts! Mix 1 bucket of manure with topsoil and return back to the hole later; putting 20 liters of water mix with the soil well and plant the seedling! Later do mulching! For pest control, since this apple has very few pests, it would be able to grow with very minimal maintenance. Climate and soil type are no problem for the semi-arid apple variety.

INTRODUCING THE NEW APPLE ADAPTABLE TO THE TROPICS .

Wambugu Apple is an organic grafted apple. Is an apple that everyone should have in their backyards and farms. It can grow in any soil and weather condition except for water logged areas but preferably sandy to sandy loamy soil. It starts production from 9 months and can produce for over 50 years .At full maturity a tre e can produce close to 1000 fruits.

*PLANTING PROCEDURES.


Step 1 . Clear the land of all trees and weeds prior to planting seedling.

Step 2 . Dig a hole of 60cm by 60cm by 60cm or Dig a hole of 2 feet by 2 feet .

Step 3 . Mix manure and topsoil in ratio 1:1 or Mix the topsoil with 2 buckets of compost/cured manure/humus soil (If you can access forest soil
thats better )

NB : About an hour before planting the seedings, soak the roots to hydrate them.Plant the grafted apple with the union 2 inch above soil levels.

Step 4 : Apply mulching around the root area with hay or dry grass.

Step 5. Water adequately (5 to 10 litres of water/daily)

UNDERSTANDING THE NEED FOR SOIL TESTING.

Why Is Soil Testing Important?

It’s one way you can tell if your soils have enough nutrients to
support optimum plant’s growth and what to do about it.

❖ If you want your plants to thrive, it’s important to know
your soil’s fertility as well as the pH.

❖ Your Soils pH tells you how acidic or alkaline your soils are.

❖ Knowing the pH of your soils helps you determine :
If Your soils have enough nutrients to support
optimum plants growth and what to do about it.
pH tells you the make- up of the soils in your landscape
and what fertilizers or amendments are needed.

There are 16 elements considered essential for plant
growth.

❖ If any of these 16 elements are lacking, plants can not
complete their proper growth.

The non mineral elements are:

❖ Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen, found in the air around us
and used for photosynthesis.

 (N-P-K ) Nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are often
referred to as the primary nutrients or macro nutrients.

 Plants use large quantities of these primary nutrients compared to other essential nutrients.

❖ Calcium, Magnesium, and Sulfur are taken up in relatively
large amounts by plants and are termed the secondary macronutrients.

**Micro nutrients,- include **

 Boron, Chlorine, Copper, Iron, Manganese, Molybdenum,
Nickel, and Zinc.

 These micronutrients are required in lower amounts than
other essential nutrients.

 Reasons why knowing your soil pH is very important .

❖ If your soils have a very high pH (an alkaline pH ). The main
nutrient such as Phosphorus may become unavailable due
to the presence of high amounts of other nutrients such as
calcium and magnesium.

❖ The remedy for this soil with a high pH (alkaline) is to add
Ammonium Sulphate fertilizer (21-0-0) which will help
lower the pH as well as incorporating phosphorus
fertilizers.

❖ Always refer and follow your soil test recommendations.

❖ A high pH (alkaline pH above 7) limits the availability of the
minor nutrients such as boron, zinc, manganese or
aluminium.

❖ If pH is low i.e Acidic soils (pH below 7) ; Iron (Fe), Aluminum (Al) and Manganese (Mn)
become soluble and can become toxic to plants.

 Also Fe, Al and Mn can react with phosphorus to form
compounds that are insoluble and hence make
phosphorus unavailable to plants.

❖ The desired pH in both the alkaline and acidic soils below is one that is slightly acidic (pH 6).

* In order to manage and improve the quality and fertility of your
soil, it’s important to know the following facts about it:

❖ The current soil pH – whether alkaline ( pH above7) or acidic (pH
below 7) .

 The levels of the primary nutrients -Phosphorus,Potassium,
Magnesium, Calcium.

 The soil test will tell you what fertilizers to use as well as how much of
each

❖ What to apply when Soils are acidic (pH below 7) are;
 Limestone (CaCO3)
 Calcium Oxide
 Dolomite (Calcium-Magnesium-Carbonate)
 Hydrated Lime (Calcium hydroxide)

❖ Acidifying the Soil - What to apply when Soils are Alkaline

INTRODUCING ALFALFA SEEDS .

DESCRIPTION.

Madicago sativa Linn, commonly known as 'Alfalfa', is a tonic plant rich in proteins, minerals, enzymes and vitamins, Bulk quantity of the whole plant is required in the pharmaceutical industries especially in homoecopathic pharmacies, Hence, there is a great need to cultivate this plant for sustained supply of the drug. Use of good and adequate phosphate containing farm yard manure, timely irrigation and appropriate spacing between plants results in good yield.

AGRONOMIC PRACTICES FOR ALFALFA .

1. LAND PREPARATION :

Cultivation of Alfalfa requires well ploughed land during the rains. Soil should be friable, smooth and clean. It needs adequate and timely application of manure for good yield.

2. SOIL REQUIREMENT :

Medicago sativa (Alfalfa) can be grown on a wide
range of soils but does best on rich, friable, well drained loamy soil while it fails to grow in acid soil, It is hardy and drought resistant can withstand high temperature (40°C to 45°C) and an annual rain fall of 45-50cm in optimum but can also survive in low rain fall of 35cm.


3. PROPAGATION/PLANTING :

Plants are raised by sowing the seeds directly in the field. Seeds have hard coat and should be soaked in warm water over night before sowing. Sowing is done in the raining season.This is done in lines or on ridges, sowing on ridges is preferred as it helps in keeping the field free from weeds, about 5 to 6 kg/acre seeds is used for sowing on ridges and
little more in line sowing. Seeds germinate within 3 to 4 weeks and thinning is done after it. Under cultivation, in favorable conditions, flowering commences two months after sowing in the third or fourth week of such and continues till the end of another two months time . During the period of 6-7 months plants get optimum vegetative growth.

4. SPACING :

Experimentally it is grown in three different spacing combinations i.e 40x20 cm ,50 x 25cm and 80 x 40 cm. But it was observed that 60 x 30 cm resulted best growth, plants being much taller with more side branches, full of flowers and pods. Studies showed that closer planting decreased or checked the growth of side shoots. It is therefore, recommended to adopt the spacing of 60 to 70 cm x 30 to 35cm and it should not be less than 60cm.

5. FERTILIZER APPLICATION :
For continuous cultivation of alfalfa additional 4 to 5 tones/acre farmyard manure is given as top dressing after every cutting, castor cake may be substituted for farmyard manure. About 2-3 tones/acre P2O5 (Superphosphate) in alternate year improves the yield. The diseases and pests that affect the crop
are not serious in nature. Leaf spot which is
caused by Pseudopeziza medicaginis can be checked with good manuring. Insect and pest can easily be controlled by using applicable pesticides after cutting the crop.

6.IRRIGATION :

Alfalfa needs more irrigation than other
legumes and is mainly grown under irrigation. First irrigation is done after seed sowing and frequent irrigation is necessary until the seedlings are 5-10cm above the ground . Subsequent irrigations are given at interval of 15-25 days up to dud stage and at 10-15 days interval during the flowering. When the corp is well established a single copious irrigation is sufficient. The crop requires frequent hoeing to keep the field free from weeds and to stir the soil.


7. HARVEST / YIELD POTENTIAL.

It takes 60 to 70 days to harvest .The crop islands ready for cutting just before or immediately after flowering, under cultivation subsequent 6 to 10 cuttings are made at the intervals of 1 to 2 months, but top dressing of manure and irrigation is necessary after each cutting for
better yield. Usually 80 to 100kg seeds per acre are obtained, but with above cultivation practices the yield is 150-200 kg per acre. The herb is usually allowed to dry under
open air sheds for maintaining its medicinal and nutritive values. Sun drying decreases its vitamin contents, specially vitamin C. Plant material should be dried at an average temperature of 30°C to 40°C.
