Pro-Biafra agitators are
miscreants – Obasanjo
Segun Olugbile and Tunde Odesola
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has described pro-
Biafra agitators as miscreants who should be ignored.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with our correspondents
at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, on Wednesday,
Obasanjo described the agitations by the Movement for the
Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra and other self-
determination groups as misplaced.
According to Obasanjo, equating the agitations by pro-
Biafra groups with the agitations that led to the Civil War
amounted to making a mountain out of a molehill.
He said, “This is a fake agitation. You people make a
mountain out of a molehill. These are boys who want to
take people unaware and get money out of them in the
name of Biafra. These are the people you should ignore, I
don’t talk about Biafra. (Philip) Effiong came and said
Biafra ceased to exist and since that day, Biafra has
ceased to exist.”
It will be recalled that the Biafra leader as of the time the
war ended, Philip Effiong, surrendered to Obasanjo by
calling off the war.
Obasanjo said that in the spirit of “No victor, no
vanquished,” the Nigerian nation absorbed Igbo people into
the civil service and the military after the war, adding that
there were no promises made to the then secessionists that
the Nigerian state had not fulfilled.
He said, “We absorbed those we should absorb both into
the civil service and into the military. Even those we didn’t
absorb, who we initially regarded as being retired without
benefits, later on we even gave them their benefits.
Abandoned houses were returned. Within 10 years of the
end of our Civil War, an Igbo man became the vice-
president of our country.
“It took the Americans 100 years before they got to that
point. So, what are you talking about? They have held all
the ministerial positions existing in this country. We have
Igbo as the Governor of Central Bank, Igbo has headed
many parastatals in this country.
“That’s why these miscreants should be ignored. They want
to get money and they go round and say, ‘We are still being
victimised. We are still being treated badly in Nigeria,’ so
that they can take money from people.”
Absolving Igbo leaders of complicity in the agitation,
Obasanjo said they (Igbo leaders) were not in support of the
agitation.
“I won’t blame the Igbo leaders. I will ignore them (the
agitators). Igbo leaders that I’ve talked about, I mean the
ones I’ve mentioned; Joe Irukwu won’t go out and do that
type of thing, and many of them. The people who are doing
this are the same people you will find in 419 business, they
are the same people you will find in drugs all over the
world. To them, this is another source of money for them
as far as they are concerned,” Obasanjo said.
When asked his comment about a new book,
InterInterventions , by Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, in
which the laureate called him a child of circumstance,
Obasanjo said, “Did he? I’ve not heard anything like that,”
with a wave of hand.
Although he said an end would not be put to Boko Haram
by the military, Obasanjo said it was necessary that
President Muhammadu Buhari gave the military a target.
He said, “You have to have an objective, otherwise, if you
say go and don’t have an objective, that’s not good enough
for a leader but an objective is not cast in concrete. Look, I
want you to finish a job in two days, though you know it
could take probably four or five days, but you must give an
objective.
“I believe that what President Muhammadu Buhari will get,
and which he knows he can get, is that he can get the upper
hand; the military will get the upper hand over Boko Haram
and of course, I think we are working towards that. But we
will not get the end of Boko Haram in three months or in six
months.
“And even when you get the upper hand militarily, you have
to do what you have to do – the socio-economic aspect.” http://punchng.com/2015/10/2326 |
Bros, you should have done your research well rather than displaying your ignorance here. The National commissioner representing South East still has some years to run on his tenure hence the reason why no new commissioner was chosen for the zone. http://www.punchng.com/news/buhari-names-inec-chairman-five-commissioners-2/ |
I sincerely pray that this project will not see the light of day as it's just an Avenue to siphon the meager resources of my dear state. What we need now is not an airport but motorable roads, constant water supply, employment for the teeming youths, revamping of our moribund companies like odua textile Industry, igbemo rice plantation, other farm settlements in the state which can make the state to be more economically viable, renovation of the general hospitals in the state, make education at primary and at least junior secondary school free to all, free health for children under the age of 5 years! The airport in Akure is as good as useless due to low patronage despite the fact that Akure and ondo state in general are more civilized than ado and Ekiti state. Who are the people expected to patronize this airport?, is it the civil servants, or artisans or the peasant farmers in Ekiti who constitute over 95% of the total population in the state? Fayose, pls there are better things to do with our money than embarking on a wasteful project such as an airport, the one at Akure is just about 30-45minutes drive to ado Ekiti, so anybody who needs to board a plane can make use of that one |
MayorofLagos:The question then is;what exactly do they want? |
God bless the op for this thread, I need to recommend this to my friends.
These are the sort of articles that should be on front page.
I will give this article the widest publicity I can |
In all honesty, Ekiti state doesn't need airport for now and these are my reasons; Airport construction is a capital intensive project and with the meager resources accruing to the state, I doubt if the state is buoyant enough to start and complete such a project without borrowing money. Even if the state has the means, another question is, of what use will an airport be to an average Ekiti man? Like the op rightly stated majority of the people in the state are civil servants, artisans, pretty traders and farmers, who among these can afford boarding an airplane? What is the economic importance of this airport to the state in general? How many Airlines will be willing to ply this route knowing fully well that there will be no passengers to lift(the case of the so called international airport in enugu comes to mind) If the airport in Akure is underutilized despite the fact that Akure is much more developed than ado, what then will be the fate of this airport? Are there no other projects that will benefit the general populace in Ekiti than wasting money on this airport project? Will it not be better to use this money to fix the roads in Ekiti most of wish are in deplorable state right now? What about provision of portable water for the populace? Provision of free or highly subsidized health care for under five and the pregnant women like it was done during the last administration Payment of wassce and or neco fee for students Provision of free education in pry and at least junior sec school Some of us were against fayemi cos we felt he wasted huge amount of money building govt house, Pavillion and other useless projects when the money could have been spent on other people oriented projects |
Thanks for the enlightenment, God bless you real good |
ShaheedBinAliyu:Pls add me 08030680421 |
This can't be true sir!, how can Ekiti state alone have 3 people on the list? Femi Falana, kayode fayemi, and segun oni are all from Ekiti! |
Alawada |
What do they really want? Today it's noise about seccesion, tomorrow it's appealing to the president to appoint more igbos to his cabinet, day after, it's about igbo presidency! |
Anybody defending Saraki obviously doesn't love this country |
Senate President Bukola Saraki, who stoned yesterday with rocks and water sachets by an irate mob at the Eid Prayer Grounds in Ilorin, Kwara State, has accused Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of leaving him vulnerable and open to attack, an aide of the governor has told SaharaReporters. Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed of Kwara State Our source added that Governor Ahmed confided in aides and the traditional ruler of Ilorin that the Senate President made himself the target of furious crowd because he failed to listen to security reports and advice urging him to stay away from Ilorin during the Sallah holiday. A security source corroborated the governor’s sentiment. According to him, security agencies in the state had been aware of public anger against the governor and Mr. Saraki, especially as information circulated among residents about the size of the senator’s assets and personal wealth. He added that many people in the state, among them unemployed youth and workers who are owed arrears of salaries, felt that the Saraki family had exploited them for years. A reporter in the state also told SaharaReporters that rumors circulated widely that Governor Ahmed had given Mr. Saraki N1 billion from Federal bailout funds meant to clear several months of salary arrears to workers. “Whether it’s true or not, the rumors were making the rounds. And they made many people incensed against the governor and Senator Saraki,” the reporter said. Other sources in the state disclosed that a few local imams (Islamic preachers), shocked by media reports about Mr. Saraki’s obscene wealth, revealed in his past asset declarations, preached about the senator’s greed. “Once we heard what the preachers were saying in mosques, we warned the governor [Ahmed] to avoid any public outing as it was clear that people [were] angry and waiting to attack him and his godfather, former Governor Saraki,” one of our security sources said. He added that, days before the Sallah festivities, security agents had seen piles of stones hidden in drainages around the prayer ground, and told the governor about it. An aide of the governor told SaharaReporters that Governor Ahmed, in turn, communicated his concerns to Mr. Saraki in Abuja. “But Senator Saraki continued to feel that he was popular in Kwara State, especially in Ilorin,” said the governor’s aide. “He would not agree to exercise caution because he wanted to show his popularity after his ego was bruised at the Code of Conduct Bureau,” the aide added. Mr. Saraki was last week arraigned at a tribunal for false declaration of assets. Ignoring all security warnings, the Senate President reportedly ordered the governor to arrange a series of high profile events for him in the state capital. The events proposed by the embattled senator included meet and greet at the Ilorin Airport on his arrival in the state. A few days before Senator Saraki’s arrival, the airwaves were saturated with radio announcements calling on politicians and civil servants in the state to welcome the former governor at the airport. In the end, the event was abruptly canceled when security agencies warned that protesters were planning to launch an attack on Mr. Saraki at the airport. SaharaReporters learned that, a night before the Sallah prayers, Governor Ahmed told Senator Saraki that he would not attend Eid prayers at the Ilorin praying grounds on account of adverse security reports. But Mr. Saraki was not deterred, said our sources. Instead, he ordered his aides to scout the length and breadth of Ilorin and surrounding towns in order to mobilize a huge crowd to show up and sing his praises at the prayer grounds. On Sallah, Governor Ahmed headed for his hometown, avoiding showing up in Ilorin. Meanwhile, Mr. Saraki arrived at the venue where he was initially serenaded by a retinue of hired praise singers. However, shortly after the formal prayer events started, with the Chief Imam presiding, and the Emir of Ilorin, Sulu Gambari, next to him, protesters started shouting “Ole! Ole!” (meaning thief in Yoruba). Pandemonium soon ensued as the angry crowd began hurling rocks at the VIP tent. Prayers were aborted as Mr. Saraki and a coterie of other religious and political officials were smuggled out of the prayer grounds. The police, army and civil defense agents had a hectic time clearing the way for the dignitaries to escape. Several eyewitnesses disclosed that the security agents fired teargas and live bullets to scare the rampaging protesters. In a public relations stunt, Senator Saraki quickly arranged a short press conference where some hired youth chanted his praise in the background as he spoke for a minute or two before he fled. Our source, who is an aide of the governor, told SaharaReporters that Mr. Saraki was also displeased with the governor’s media team for issuing a statement condemning the attack on Senator Saraki and other VIPs. The embattled Senator Saraki felt that the statement undermined his earlier denial that he was not the target of the stone-throwing protesters. Mr. Saraki had handpicked Mr. Ahmed to succeed him as the governor of Kwara State. State workers are being owed salaries for the last five months, a development that is seen as the result of Mr. Saraki’s financial mismanagement during his eight-year stint as state governor. http://saharareporters.com/2015/09/25/ilorin-attack-saraki-upset-kwara-governor-who-responds-“we-warned-you” |
Na wa o, I hardly can believe what I just saw in that video. Perhaps we are getting there little by little, we should stop singing praises of these thieves, they all are our enemies. I want to believe Saraki went there thinking people would show him support and probably even grant a press interview after the prayers where he would have spit out lies again, but thank God, people are becoming wiser |
The 3-man committee was set up for the presidential election during collation of results after some people had petitioned inec to cancel the election in rivers state, it had nothing to do with the governorship election. |
No wonder the guy was spraying money all over the place during last election, so the money wasn't really his. |
Thanks a thousand times for this write up, |
He has declared his assets, if you have evidence that he under-declared can you show us the evidence or better still send your complaints to the code of conduct Bureau? What do we really want in this country? Do we just antagonise for antagonizing sake? Somebody was asked to declare his assets, he said he doesn't give a damn, I'm sure you guys are still in shock that the assets were finally made public, we still remember how you guys wailed about the failure of the president to make his assets declaration public, now that it has been done instead for you guys to bury your heads in shame, you're here saying rubbish |
Contrary to insinuations in some quarters, the Senate Unity Forum (SUF) on Wednesday said it is going ahead with its suit on the forgery of the Senate Standing Orders against Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu. Other defendants are the Clerk of the National Assembly, the Clerk of the Senate, the Senate, and the National Assembly. Senators Suleiman Hunkuyi, Kabir Garba Marafa, Abu Ibrahim, Robert Ajayi Boroffice and Gbenga Ashafa insisted that they are not going back on their case before the Federal High Court, Abuja. The Forum made the clarifications in a statement issued by their counsel, Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN), against the backdrop of reports that the SUF has withdrawn its suit (FHC/ABJ/CS/651/2015) on the forgery of the purported Senate Standing Orders 2015. There were reports on Tuesday that Justice Ademola Adeniyi of the Federal High Court struck out the suit by the five Senators on behalf of the Senate Unity Forum (SUF). The counsel to the SUF, Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN) said it was “erroneous and mischievous” to claim that the suit by the five Senators had been withdrawn. He disclosed that it was the first suit (FHC/ABJ/ CS/647/2015) filed by Senator Anthony Adeniyi, who served in the 7th Senate that was withdrawn to avoid abuse of court process. He said: “Despite the legal possibility that the suit discontinued by Sen. Anthony Adeniyi could be re-filed, the media should have been more specific about the case withdrawn. “Contrary to the misinformation put out there, we hereby confirm the originating summons in suit no: FHC/ABJ/ CS/651/2015 filed at the instance of the above-named Senators against Saraki, Ekweremadu and the National Assembly. “The above particularized suit differs in contents from that of Sen. Adeniyi as can be distilled from their respective grounds, reliefs sought, affidavit evidence, parties and declarations sought.” Osuman insisted that the prayers, sought by the five Senators in the originating summons, were still subsisting. http://thenationonlineng.net/senate-rules-unity-forum-pushes-ahead-with-suit-against-saraki-ekweremadu/ |
I went to church yesterday as commanded by the Lord in the scriptures |
This is the way to go, heads should roll whenever there are lapses, that way everybody will sit up and be alive to his/her responsibility. This was what we asked for during gej's tenure, but he failed to to be decisive, he feared the politicians more than the common men, forgetting that it's the common men that vote. I just hope PMB will remain focused, there's seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel after all. |
So these people knew obj stole money, yet they kept quiet during gej's tenure. They failed to mount pressure on gej to probe obj, now they are spewing rubbish. Abel, leave pmb alone, let him do his work |
UCH Lagos? I only know of UCH ibadan, never knew there's another one in lagos It's a good development anyway |
These guys won't cease to amaze someone! What has a tribal group got to do with fifa presidency? I hope they won't come back to accuse pmb of not supporting their kinsman because of his supposed hatred for a particular tribe? Guys please stop embarrassing us! |
I wish i could like this post a thousand times! |
Does it mean no corpse way released to the mother after being told she had a stillbirth? The way nigerian press reports issues is just some how Thank God the evildoer was exposed anyway |
I really dont understand why you have to lie about your have which nobody asked for in the first place, nawa for some people sha. |
Oore! |
metuh can you just keep quiet for one minute? |
if I had my way, I would tell buhari not to name any minister! what has really been the productivity levels of the former ministers? I personally think it's just a waste of resources having some big for nothing politicians as ministers when there are permanent secretaries and directors who could function in the same capacities. I have not really been impressed with pmb's performance so far but not naming the ministers is probably the least of my grouse with him! |
