Super Eagles' captain, Nwankwo Kanu, holds the enviable record of being Africa's all-time most decorated footballer. The leggy forward with legendary skills, hit the limelight in 1993, when he featured prominently in the Golden Eaglets' squad that won the FIFA Under-17 World Championship trophy in Japan, the second time by the Nigerian cadet team. He went ahead to captain the famous Dream Team, Nigeria's Under-23 team, to win gold at the Olympics held in Atlanta, United States in 1996. His exploits in the round leather game has also seen him winning the Dutch League as well as the prestigious European Champions League shield with Ajax Amsterdam FC of Holland and the English Premier League with Arsenal. He has lifted the glamorous English FA Cup twice with Arsenal and Portsmouth. The Abia State-born footballer, who began his professional career with Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Owerri, has featured in six editions of the Africa Cup of Nations with three bronze medals to show for his efforts. He has played at two World Cup finals - France '98 and Korea/Japan 2002. However, his ambition to make his third appearance at the mundial in South Africa in June has been variously put to question by experts and stakeholders in the game. One of the strong voices that believe the Portsmouth of England lanky forward has overstayed his welcome in the national team after more than a decade is former Green Eagles' player and coach, Kelechi Emeteole. “An athlete's strength goes down as he gets older. For instance, we all knew Nwankwo Kanu right from the early 90s to early part of 2000s when he was doing well. Now that he's ageing, he's no longer the Kanu we used to know. It's time for him to quit the stage for younger players to takeover. That is the practice in so many other countries all over the world,” Emeteole submitted in an exclusive interview with Saturday Sunsports. “If you look at the current squad of Brazil, you will find out that the oldest player there is Lucio; the other ones are young players. And just watch out, after the World Cup, Lucio will retire from the Brazil national team. But players like Kanu have refused to quit the national team after more than a decade because we still worship them. “I'm not saying that we should not give them their dues for their contributions to the country. We have to recognise their contributions, but then tell them, gentlemen, you have done your best for the country, it's time for you to bow out honourably so that younger ones can continue with the service to the nation,” the Heartland FC of Owerri went on. “Modern football requires good fighting spirit, speed, strength, skills, endurance and so on. All these are basically the attributes of a youth. Kanu is not ready to battle with anybody on the pitch. He's not ready to run or mark opponents for ball possession. We know that some years back, he and the other older players in the team used to do that, but now, they can no longer do that. “Some of us once played for Nigeria. When you see Emma Okala now, he wears eyeglasses. You would hardly know that he once played football except you knew him in his active days in the game. Ditto for Christian Chukwu and my humble self. In my playing days, I was popularly known as Caterpillar, but now, I'm just a wheelbarrow. “Previously, while coaching, I used to demonstrate what I wanted the players to do practically, but nowadays, I only tell the players what to do. We only impart the knowledge to the players based on the experience one gathered in his playing days. And the players, with their fresh energy, will make use of the advice to succeed. It's as simple as that because the headmaster was once a schoolboy. “When you are a headmaster, you should be able to guide the schoolboys. The intelligent ones among the players don't look down on their coaches' experiences. “I don't have anything against the older players in the Super Eagles, I'm only trying to tell them the truth. If people like us retired from the national team, they too should retire and give the younger players the opportunity to serve the country too. “I would be disappointed if at the end of the day, Lagerback takes the likes of Kanu to the World Cup. It's not good for us to wash our dirty linens in the public. Kanu grew up in Owerri and I know him very well. He cannot tell me that in 1993, he was 16 years old when he played in the Golden Eaglets team that won the FIFA Under-17 World Championship in Japan. Even if he was 16 then, between that time and now, is about 17 years. “But we all know that he was about 21 years in 1993. If you add 21 to 17, his real age should be about 38 years by now. That's why I think it's time for him to quit the national team honourably now the ovation is still loud. “He can only go to the World Cup in South Africa to play a similar role to the one Stephen Keshi played in the Super Eagles' team to the World Cup in the United States in 1994. You would recall that the then Super Eagles' players respected Keshi a lot. So, he was helping the coach to put the players together. “Kanu can equally play the same role in the Eagles' squad to South Africa and not to go and be struggling with younger players from Argentina, Korea and Greece for the ball on the pitch. We'll be deceiving ourselves if that should happen,” Emeteole concluded. http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/features/sportsonthehour/2010/may/01/sportsbreak-01-05-2010-001.htm
Kelechi Emeteole has spoken well. He's been in the league long enough to know how things work and how players falsify their age. However, I disagree with him Kanu was 21 in '93. I'll say 25 years is more like it. |

Quote From Honeric Stop jumping the gun bro, which tactical intelligence is largerback known for? can you tell me his records? well, i don't want us to dwell on these, just as i said, he's still same of the same until he proves why he's worth being paid #30million per month. so let's wait and see. Exactly! Wait and see and Stop nagging & grumbling up and down. . . .You can't accuse him of tactical deficiency just as you can't vouch for his tactical intelligence. Wait until the world cup starts and then you can determine whether he's worth the N30 million/month or not. Like se na only you dey pay tax for this country sef?. . . . . . ![]() |
