Semedo back to bench |
hinohsend:I was going to say this. People oversimplify madrid's problems and chunk it all up to the departure of Ronaldo, conveniently leaving the man that gave them back to back to back UCL. I wouldn't even read too much meaning into madrid's poor form, they typically start their seasons slow. This time last season they had lost 2 and drawn 2 with Ronaldo contributing just 2goals. |
BascoVanVeli:I was going to read to the end to see if anybody addresed that post before commenting. Good thing you did. Before his injury, shehu was one of the few players stringing accurate passes. His short passes were impressive and his long passes were bliss, he was picking out ighalo nicely from his RB position. Man played that right wing like it was midfield. Aina didn't even do as much as shehu, he just had more minutes. I was surprised when I saw folks celebrating Aina's performance and criticizing shehu's. I just tire. |
Olamyyde:Busquets played at least 3 positions yesterday. When we were building from the back we revert to a 343 formation. Busquets slots in between pique and vermaelen as the third CB, semedo and alba as side midfielders. When we were on the defensive, busquets played as a DM, trying to block passing lanes and intercept passes. When we were attacking, busquets played as a CM/AM. Give the man some credit. |
haymekus:He has a point though. Peps Barcelona was not exactly great defensively, we defended by starving the opponents of the ball. Pep had what was called the 6 seconds rule. Whenever we lose the ball, the player at fault in coordination with the players nearby are to win the ball back in the next 6 seconds. Only if they fail to win the ball after 6 seconds can they revert back to their normal team 'defensive' structure. In the past 2games we have seen the same thing with this present team, pressing like mad immediately they lose the ball. With the introduction of Arthur into the gala xi also, we have seen a marked improvement in our ability to retain possession. Where the pep Barcelona edges us considerably are in these 3 areas. 1. Creativity: okay we press like mad when we lose the ball but what do we do when we get the ball? We find a player backward and pass the ball to him just for the sake of recycling possession. No incisive passes, very little defense splitting passes. Tactically, I think Arthur and coutinho are our biggest problems in this set up. People keep saying coutinho's best position is as a winger but he is our most creative midfielder right now. He is the only player bar messi that drives the ball with quickness from midfield to attack. He also has eyes for those defense splitting passes. Arthur is good but playing him together with rakitic leads to redundancy. Rakitic is our 'go to' man when we are recycling possession. He pops up when a player is been pressured, receives the ball and passes to a player under little or no pressure. This is what rakitic does and it is the same thing Arthur is presently doing. Playing both at the same time means while we might retain possession most of the times, it would be in positions where we can do very little damage. One of them needs to drop for a creative midfielder. Arthur is just starting his Barcelona career so I do hope he picks up and improves in his creativity. He would be a big hit in our midfield if he can find spaces to thread passes to our attackers. Steam: The 6 seconds rule required a lot of pressing. Quick plugging of gaps, athleticism, All of which expends energy. When guardiola became the boss, his first point of duty was to let go of some players like Deco, yaya, ronaldinho, etc for their younger variants. So in attack(at different points) we had the likes of pedro, sanchez, david villa, messi etc all with youthfulness and a lot of steam to burn, leading the press. In midfield we had players like xavi, iniesta, busquets, all in their 20s leading the press. This guys were young and full of energy(although it also did help that we were in possession of the ball for most of the times). So much was their energy that guardiola could afford to relieve messi of diffensive duty and conserve his energy for the final third, so much like hazard in sarri's Chelsea. In contrast, valverde's barca has a 31yr old Lionel messi and a 31yr old Luis Suarez leading the press in the attack, a 30yr old busquets and a 30yr old Ivan rakitic leading the press in the midfield. What you get is a team that will press you in the first half then lose steam in the 2nd half, as we have seen in the past couple of games. Over Reliance on messi: let's not get it twisted, any team that has messi would rely on him, it is the overreliance that becomes an issue. Pep's barca had plenty of goal scorers. Eto topped league goals in pep's first season, henry scored goals when he came, David villa could score goals, heck! pep played fabregas as a false 9 and the man left the pitch with the match ball. But as we have seen in this team, every attacking move begins or ends with messi. |
gustav25:Rakitic was one of the best players today |

raumdeuter:It is just not enough to keep piling stats against epl small boys such as Chelsea, man u, man city, arsenal and Tottenham. He should move to the championship and do it against the top guns such as stoke on a cold rainy night. Only then can he be truly regarded as the GOAT. |
nitrogen: can we start now? |
Awesome01:I remember the last time umtiti got injured. Such depressing memory. |
Girona are playing a 5-man defence. Would be interesting to see how this midfield breaks that defence |
philfearon:Asin eh.. Our sense of entitlement eh. Outside of real Madrid, we are the only club to have won the champions league in the last 5 years. Having said that, we need to win it this year. |
Wow.. what do we have here? Opened the thread to see folks complaining about the defence, but when valverde tries to fix it they call him mourinho2.0 and call us Mes-Que-un-parkthebus. Y'all should pick one struggle and stick to it. Do we have problems in the defense that needs fixing? If so, why do we blame valverde when he makes defensive decisions? |
Excallibur:Dissent is a straight up yellow |
Unlimited22:Okay, let me know when you have the strength. People have said this lie so many times it has become gospel. |
Unlimited22:I challenge you to show me any video proof of Sergio busquet diving that is not from at least 4years ago |

Just watched the highlights and saw the saves he made. Hope we're not going the man-u way though |
Unlimited22:True. I pray you guys gel. It'll be nice to watch Europa once in a while and actually see exciting football. |
tesppidd:I couldn't see the game. How did the midfield fare? I did predict after seeing the line-up that it would be a tough game based on the midfielders on parade |
Unlimited22:Good for you. I guess it was my high expectations based on how you guys hyped the sarri-ball on your thread. Finally got to see it today and I was far from impressed |
Unlimited22:Yeah, we do. But worry first about your 'sarri-ball' |
I fear for this midfield ![]() |
spillo1:Too polite. In 1985, cole sounded like a high school counsellor, calling a high school kid into his office and giving him advice on career and life choices. I'm the biggest Cole fan there is, albeit I grew into him post 'Cole world'. Still, I bump his tracks on a reg and i'm telling you he is not a battle rapper. When it comes to telling stories and painting pictures, cole and Joyner are up there but battle rapping? Nah mehn. Doesn't take anything away from his genius though |
spillo1:Jammed KOD inside out, 1985 wasn't even a diss track in its pure form, it was more of a pep talk from an OG to a young gun. I'll even rate 'false prophets' - which also isn't a real diss track - ahead of 1985. Which brings me to my earlier assertion, cole isnt a battle rapper. |
spillo1:Like someone said up there, Cole is not a battle rapper |
Unlimited22:It's no surprise she feels that way. I'm sure there was a stray bullet somewhere in those lines for her. |
philbubs:Oh boy! Mans gonna be spoilt for choice |
