The United States Embassy has confirmed that the convoy of former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio, collided with a suburban jeep belonging to the mission on Monday. The Senior Information Specialist in the embassy, Sani Mohammed, said local authorities had commenced investigation into the accident. When asked about the condition of the driver and the vehicle involved in the crash, Mohammed said he did not know. He said, “A US embassy vehicle was involved in the accident. We are staying in touch with local authorities who are investigating, but I don’t know the condition of the driver and the vehicle.” But the Head, Media Relations and Strategy, Federal Road Safety Corps, Bisi Kazeem, said seven adult males were involved in the crash, adding that three of them including Akpabio sustained injuries and were taken to the hospital. “A suburban jeep and a Mercedes Benz SUV were involved in the accident; the suburban was towed to the embassy while the Benz SUV was towed to the Central Police Station. Our accident investigation team has already commenced investigation, so it is too early to know the cause of the accident,” he said. Akpabio, who is currently the Minority Leader of the Senate, was involved in a car accident in the early hours of Monday on his way to the airport to catch an international flight. One of our correspondents learnt that his car ran into a convoy of some US embassy officials while trying to beat the traffic light. An officer of the FRSC, who craved anonymity, told one of our correspondents that the occupants of the vehicles in the convoy of the US embassy and Akpabio’s driver did not sustain any injury but that the senator suffered some injuries in the chest region. The FRSC officer, who was at the scene of the accident which occurred around 7.25am near the Bolingo Hotel, along Abuja Airport Road, in the Central Business District of the FCT, stated that Akpabio was immediately rushed to the National Hospital for an intensive care. One of the senator’s aides, who was sighted at the National Hospital on Monday, told one of our correspondents that Akpabio was travelling outside the country to visit his wife and children when the accident happened. The Deputy Minority Whip, Senator Biodun Olujimi, who was one of the early callers at the hospital, explained that medical personnel at the hospital told her that the Akwa-Ibom North-West senator was in a stable condition. Also, the current Governor of Akwa -Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, who was sighted at the hospital, did not speak with journalists when he got there around 12.10pm. The Chief Information Officer of the National Hospital, Hajia Rabiah Labaran, told journalists that Akpabio was brought to the hospital by some FRSC officers who rescued him from the scene of the accident. Labaran said, “He (Akpabio) was brought in this morning after he had a car crash as I learnt. He was brought in from the Bolingo Hotel junction, where a vehicle crashed into his own vehicle from behind. “When they brought him we conducted a check on him and the result showed that he did not have any serious injury. He was talking when he was brought in and they gave him necessary attention at the trauma unit. “I learnt that as of this afternoon (12:30pm), he was taken to the private wing of the hospital for proper care but there was no serious injury. “It is something he can come over in a few days. He is currently recuperating,” she added. A source, however, told one of our correspondents last night that Akpabio had been discharged from the hospital. The source, who is one of the aides of the senator, said he was discharged from the hospital around 4pm after the doctors had certified him fit to continue treatment after the necessary prescriptions. But Labaran declined further comments on Akpabio’s treatment when contacted last night. www.punchng.com/news/akpabios-vehicle-collided-with-ours-us-embassy/ |
BeeBeeOoh:why did you reject them? Make I help them get reply |
Is dat all? Now I know why they want him gone |
The national leadership of the Peoples
Democratic Party has said only Nigerians are in
the position to say why the party was rejected at
the poll during the last general elections.
It said the rejection of the party was still a
surprise despite the achievements it claimed the
party recorded in the last 16 years, during which
it was in control of the Federal Government.
The National Publicity Secretary of the party,
Chief Olisa Metuh, stated this at a press briefing
in Abuja on Monday.
He was speaking on the 17th anniversary of the
formation of the former ruling party.
Metuh said his party did well by not only
promoting the spirit of democracy in the 16
years, but by also fighting corruption and
promoting the image of the nation.
But when asked whether with such
achievements, he was astonished that majority
of Nigerians still rejected the party during the
last general elections, he said only Nigerians
could provide answer to the question.
He said, “Only the electorate can say why we
were rejected. We must have made our mistakes
and some of the issues that affected the
election had to do with the people.
“We believe that we did our best for the Nigerian
people and we got the largest number of people
from the diaspora to start business here.
“In those 16 years, we did our best. We created
a system where merits were recognised.
“We created a lot of super rich Nigerians like
Dangote, Oando and other companies. Nigerian
companies now compete with foreign companies
in the oil and gas sector.”
He said it would be wrong to say that the party
created corruption, adding that because of its
believe that corruption should be stamped out of
the country, the party, through the Presidents it
had produced, fought the menace with vigour.
He said this was the reason why anti-corruption
agencies like the Economic and Financial Crime
Commission and the Independent Corrupt
Practices and other Related Offences
Commission were created.
He said, “Was corruption part of our
achievements, no. In fact, anti-corruption was
part of our achievements because we formed
and created EFCC and the ICPC.
“These agencies were created with strict
establishing and operation laws to ensure
effectiveness and immunity from executive
interferences.”
He added that down the years, SERVICOM desks
were opened in ministries and agencies to
further ensure ethical standards in government
businesses.
Metuh added that as a result of this deliberate
policies, human right and business friendly
environment were created and it saw to the
massive return of Nigerians in the Diaspora and
the influx of direct foreign investments into the
country. www.punchng.com/news/only-nigerians-know-why-they-rejected-us-pdp/ |

The Civil Societies Coalition for the Emancipation of Osun State has recommended Justice Folahanmi Oloyede of Osun State Judiciary to President Muhammadu Buhari for appointment as one of the judges for the proposed special court to handle corruption cases. The Chairman of the group, Mr. Adeniyi Sulaiman, said this in a statement made available to our correspondent in Osogbo on Sunday. The group said Oloyede, who wrote a petition asking the House of Assembly to impeach Governor Rauf Aregbesola based on allegations of corruption, was a bold and honest judge who they said was qualified to head such a court. Sulaiman stated that any judge, who would be appointed to man such a court, should be a person of impeccable character and must be bold and courageous to discharge his/her duties without fear or favour. The statement read, “It is now clear that most of the judicial officers in the land have soiled their hands in one corrupt practice or the other, failing integrity test conducted by the security agents. “We want to use this opportunity to recommend the courageous serving Judge of the Osun State High Court, Justice Olamide Folahanmi Oloyede, to be appointed as one of the judges to man the proposed Anti-Corruption Specialised Court, which will try the looters of the nation’s treasury. “We also want to say that Justice Oloyede is a woman of virtue, integrity and an upright person with impeccable character. The records are there to be checked by anybody about Justice Folahanmi Oloyede.” www.punchng.com/news/group-wants-ministerial-post-for-osun-judge/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |

The Presidency has stated that once it fully commences its corruption trials, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might have no moral legs to stand on. This was contained in a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by the Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu. Shehu, who was reacting to a statement issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, that “the economy is going down” under the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration, noted that, the opposition party should rather bury its head in shame for subjecting Nigeria to the “worst economic plunder through corruption” in its recent history. He said, “It is ridiculous for any sane government to artificially rebase the economy and claim to transform Nigeria into the largest economy in Africa as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration did.” “Once the formal trial for corruption begins, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) might no longer have the moral legs to stand on,” he added. According to him, the present administration has successfully blocked leakages and other avenues for corruption. He said the administration had also frustrated efforts by corrupt elements to divert public funds to private pockets. www.today.ng/politics/083011080-pdp-might-have-no-legs-to-stand-on-once-corruption-trial-begins-presidency/?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

The Federal Inland Revenue Service would soon go after multinational companies, corporate organisations and individuals who are evading payment of taxes in the country. The move, according to SUNDAY PUNCH ’s investigations, is part of a renewed effort by the agency to boost tax revenue to fund the programmes of the Federal Government. Statistics obtained from the service revealed that out of the 450,000 companies in Nigeria, only 125,000, representing 27.7 per cent, pay any form of taxes. Going by this figure, it implies that about 325,000 companies are evading tax, thus denying the government huge revenue annually. In the 2015 fiscal year, the FIRS was given a revenue generation target of N4.5tn by the Federal Government and it has so far generated N2.667tn. But between January and July, findings by SUNDAY PUNCH showed that the service had collected a total sum of N2.374tn against the target of N2.667trn, thus having a revenue shorfall of N290bn within the seven-month period. The past Chairman of the FIRS, Mr. Sunday Ogungbesan, had said the service was finding it difficult to track the financial activities of those who did not pay taxes, as most of the evaders were no longer active. But the Acting Executive Chairman, FIRS, Mr. Babatunde Fowler, in his first official meeting with the management staff of the service, was said to have vowed to ensure that all tax revenue due to the government would be recovered from all tax payers. Fowler said his administration would not take the issue of tax evasion lightly, as he was aware that some foreign companies that were operating in Nigeria were being investigated in England for evading taxes. He said, “No country can succeed without taxation. We will make sure that we cover all ground, especially on the corporate level; all tax payers within each state will be covered. “Those who have found Nigeria a fertile ground; those who have made a living and made profit from the businesses within Nigeria, we ask them to do the right thing. “We all know the right thing to do. Most of these companies have the big names as auditors yet they keep different records — one set of records for the banks, one set of records for shareholders and one set of records for the tax administrators. “I think it’s time that that was stopped and I am going to also request that the multinationals should follow our laws and not do things that will contravene the tax laws and I ask them that they should please partner with us and follow the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, especially when it comes to tax payment.” The Director, Communications and Liaison Department, FIRS, Mr. Emmanuel Obeta, had told our correspondent that the FIRS, in a bid to capture companies with the tax net, is currently discussing with the Corporate Affairs Commission to make it mandatory for the companies to obtain their Tax Identification Number at the point of registration. Obeta said, “The collaboration with the CAC is still ongoing, such that the FIRS will gain an immediate access to all the data of registered companies and such companies can also obtain their TIN at the point of registration from the CAC. “The number was obtained from a physical validation or enumeration exercise. A lot of the other registered companies are portfolio companies without visible validation of their existence at their given addresses.” www.punchng.com/news/tax-evasion-firs-to-go-after-325000-companies-persons/?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter |
