These embassy pipo don change parade! cheesy cheesy

Very unique questions. Cram to your own detriment! grin
Lol. The embassy didn't change parade. The VO simply flowed with topdee's response to the questions asked. That's why it's wise not to say what can put one in tight corner.

yea, i know... i just want to be careful cos am yet to get a sponsor, my problem is d sponsor ish cos i dont want something dat will bring complications.actually the 620 will be paid for 11 month out of 12 month...10 month makes a session then a month holiday which d stipend will not be paid.after the one month hols is the next session...620*11 is more dan 6750...as someone said earlier that those people can be funny thou..i will keep on trying if i can get a sponsor cos i will have to send my doc to them next week
You don't have an issue dear. You already have a scholarship of €6200. Just top your account up with >=€520 and you're good to go. Also, the processing time for someone like you with scholarship doesn't take too long. Get all your necessary docs ready and go get your RP.

Good morning all. I'm a new member but I've been following so many threads on Nairaland since last year including this one without registering as a member. Everything has been going smoothly, i learned a lot. And it helped me in my GRE and TOEFL where I scored 312 and 100 respectively. But now I have an issue. And please I need the gurus in the house (walspring, imperioxx and other) to help. I don't know what the issue is. I applied for visa last month during the interview I wasn't all that prepared, so I stammered in the first question which was "Why did you choose this course?". I answered because I want to specialize in control Engineering which is a branch of electrical engineering and I enjoyed the theory behind it when I was an undergraduate, it was interesting and challenging " and every other question was just a formality. Me myself I knew I messed up so I didn't care much when she gave me the blue slip. But since that day I've been preparing hard for the interview the second time. I had an answer to virtually all the questions that could be asked because I read a lot of transcript and put down my answers, read them and knew them like the back of my hands. So I went for the interview yesterday again. And this was the transcript
Greetings and pass me your passport and i20
VO: Why are you going to the US?
Me: I'm going for my masters degree in Electrical and electronics engineering at the southern Illinois university in edwardsville, [s]and I chose this school because it's one of the best schools in the Midwestern region of the United States in Electrical Engineering according to usnews.com and forbes.com, and most of the professors in the department are Ivy League trained which is synonymous to having an Ivy League education at a cheaper rate, like professor Tim York of the department who won the 2016 IEEE award of the year for his research paper on "Polarization on image sensoring" and they also have excellent research laboratories and facilities that'll aid in the advancement of my career in this field so that when I come back to the country I can be able to put my skills to work in the power sector of the country as power is one of the major issues we're facing in the country I'd like to come back and contribute my quota to the improvement and development of the sector. (P.S: I said every word)[/s]

VO: Where did you learn about all these you just said?
Me: I went online to know more about the school because the last time I came I couldn't explain my situation very well.

VO: Who's paying for this trip?
Me: My Dad.

VO: what does he do?
Me: He'a a renowned lawyer with his own firm and he has about 10 associates working for him.

VO: What are the qualifications needed for this course or something (I didn't hear him very well, but I heard qualifications)
Me: I have a bachelors degree in computer engineering from the university of Lagos.

VO: Have you ever traveled out?
Me: I went for an AIESEC conference in Ghana when I was an undergraduate. (First interview I said the same thing but I forgot to put it in my first DS-160, but I put it in the second DS-160 that I've traveled to Ghana before)

VO: Where do you work currently?
Me: I just completed my National Youth service in April this year as I graduated in November 2015.
(In My DS-160 that place they asked for employment status and all, I put Where I worked during my service year.)

VO: Are you married?
Me: No, I'm just 24 *laughs* .. VO laughed too and said "you never know".

Types for like 3 minutes non stop. And told me sorry you're not eligible at this time. I was weak, because I answered all the questions with so much fluency, I didn't stammer one time. I was just flowing. Please help me what can I do? I want to go for the third time asap because I have the answers to every technical question they can ask. Thanks a lot for the help.
1. Why are you going to the US? You don't need to talk too much. If I was the VO, I'll just start snoring the moment you started preaching that your robotic gospel. Be as concise as possible.
2. The VO was asking about where you learned all that you said because you just sounded like a robot to him. You implicitly told him that you crammed it from the school site.
3. When you don't hear a question well. Don't just assume. Ask the VO again if indeed you're sure you didn't hear it well and be very attentive.
4. You gave a contradictory response to where you work. Why fill that you're a student when you've graduated or why fill your PPA as your current job description when you've passed out. Don't contradict yourself. Fill the right thing so you can answer appropriately without mincing words.
5. You haven't seen 24 years old that's married. Ask Ahmed Musa grin
P.S Be as concise and specific as you can. Don't talk too much and don't answer what the VO didn't ask you. Also, don't forget the God factor. All things are possible to him that believes.

Go and get your visa bro.

My appointment was slated for 6:30am. Got to the embassy around 5:30am. Had to wait till 6am before the whole process of checking in.
Fast forward. Got in to the main house. Did my fingerprint and waited for the VO to call me. I think it was window 4 or 5. So this is how the interview went:
VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning ma
VO: Pass me your passport
VO: So why are you going for this Masters
Me: I'm going for my Masters because I finished my undergraduate study in Computer science and this course will give me a competitive advantage in my field here in Nigeria (Sincerely, I was caught off guard with this question, maybe coz it wasn't asked the way I expected)
VO: So who will be paying for this?
Me: I was awarded a full tuition waiver and a graduate assistantship and my dad will be covering the remaining funds.
VO: So what's the name of your school?
Me: Sorry, I didn't get that question ma
VO: What's the name of the school you're going to?
Me: BGSU
VO: How many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to three schools
VO: So Why BGSU?
Me: I choose this school because of the amount of quality research being carried out there in the field of Computer Science and Software Engineering. My research interest matches with that of the faculty Dr. Bleep Bleep which is on development of end users software engineering technologies. Hence, I am keen on being part of his research group and learn more. Also, the courses being offered there are designed in such a way that they are more research oriented and it best fits my career growth. (She was just nodding her head like Agama)
VO: What's your research topic?
Me: I'll be working on the development of end user software engineering technologies. This is a research area that aims to invent new kinds of technologies that collaborate with end users to improve the quality of their software. There is a need for this outcome because research shows that the number of end users creating their own softwares greatly exceeds the number of professional developers and that the software they create is riddled with errors. (She nodded her head again. In my mind, I was saying I no dey commot for here without my visa)
VO: Do you work?
Me: Yes ma
VO: Where?
Me: I work as bleep at firm Bleep
VO: So what programming language do you know?
Me: Java, C++, C#, Python
VO: Where did you graduate from?
Me: School bleep
VO: Where did you do your NYSC?
Me: I served at bleep state at an higher institution and worked as a teaching assistant.
VO: How many siblings do you have?
Me: I have bleep siblings
VO: Are they all in Nigeria?
Me: Yes ma. They're all in Nigeria
VO: Did you write any test?
Me: Yes. I wrote Toefl and GRE
VO: what was your GRE score?
Me: I had 309 in GRE and 4.0 in AWA
VO: Have you travelled out before?
Me: No. I have not had reasons to.

Then she brought out the white paper and the golden words came 'Your visa has been approved and will be processed within 4 business days'...I didn't hear the remaining words. I was already in La La land with my teeth shining like closeup advertisement. Lol. No document was asked. Not even my birth certificate wey I carry go(lol)

I just walked out smiling and feeling like the happiest man in the world.

Lemme share my lil success tips for prospective visa applicants
1. Pray, pray and pray. For indeed without God we can do nothing.
2. Prepare. You just need to prepare. Don't go and do free styling at the embassy oo. Know your course well. Read previous transcripts. I read all the transcripts(both accepted and rejected) in the dropbox link that was dropped here and prepared my own transcript using the responses in the previous interview.
3. I rehearsed my answers oo facing the mirror for like 2 weeks, speaking to myself everyday and watching my eye contact and body posture through the mirror. Pls rehearse and if you can memorize like me, it's an added advantage.
4. Maintain eye contact with the VO. Don't look away for once, smile and speak confidently. I was just smiling like WhatsApp Smiley at the embassy. The visa interview ain't that scary jare.
5. Speak concisely. Don't talk too much. Just give the main points.
6. Fill the DS-160 by yourself. Don't allow one agent to fill in rubbish for you. I guess the VO was asking me some questions based on my DS-160 info.
7. Again, Pray and trust God. If you think the God factor is not involved in this visa tin, na you sabi.

After Finland bounced me last year, God has vindicated me. Make I come dey go Trumpland. Na me and trump go run tins together. Lol

Pls bear with my long epistle. I didn't even know I was asked these much questions until I started typing. Overjoy is doing me ATM.

God bless everyone here who has one way or the other been a blessing to me via their posts.

Wishing all prospective visa applicants success in their interviews.

Okay. I got a full tuition waiver+ GTA. I can't really say much about your department because the best person to tell you if your dept gives funding+ GA is your grad cord. Also, it's a safe school but lately, safe schools have been acting unsafe cheesy
By the way, you said you just applied for Fall. Hmm..That's quite late for funding coz the deadline for funding for most progs in the school was March 1st but like i said earlier, your grad cord will be in the best position to answer this.

Hello gurus in the house, I'll have been a silent reader of this thread,i must say may God richly bless those of you contributing immensely here. I really need advice from anyone who can help. I'm a bachelor's degree holder in electrical engineering with a GPA of 2.63/5.i intend applying to some university earlier mentioned on this thread which accept that GPA, although I'm still going to Take TOEFL and gre to boost my chances of admission. my intention is immediately i get to US, i want to quit the master's program and start nursing school in that same university or another university or community college.I'm applying for both the nursing and master's here in Nigeria at same time so that immediately i get over there i can start nursing.i will to know if it's possible, please anyone who have an idea should kindly contribute.
You don't sound like a genuine prospective student. Elect engineering to nursing sounds confusing except you're just looking for an escape route. Mind you, if you think you can just quit a program anyhow, you'll be out of status and if you're caught, you'll see Muritala the next day.

I figured it out through the GPA and course. I did not go to Unilag but I stumbled unto his profile on LinkedIn. Weird.

What was his GRE like?

And as per those schools rejecting him, it is a function of luck. The guy on NL who got into Princeton did not have 4.9 but his standardized test scores were stellar - 334 (Q168 V166 A5) and 115 (TOEFL).

EducationRe: How To Achieve High Scores On The GRE by shayhune:
Scholastica16:
I am guessing this your friend is in UT Austin at the moment which is also a top 4 school engineering wise. The point is admission decisions could go either ways. Nobody truly has it figured out but a lot of the opinions here are spot on. The school of graduation can throw some weight.
Scholastica16, I tried to code it but you figured it out grin. You don burst my bubbles. Yea. He's in UT Austin. In fact, he even got a good offer from Georgia Tech(full funding for Phd) but rejected it for UT Austin. What got me perturbed was why MIT, Princeton and co would bounce such strong profile even with a very good GRE score, SOP and LORs.

By the way, are you an Akokite smiley

Let me chime in with my little experience..... Nobody for US send your first class degree with no research experience from NIGERIA. They don't even trust your degree!!!! And our reputation is getting worse!!! UK schools will send you small because they sorta love first class degrees. That said, if I were in his shoes, I will take my first class to a top European school, gain as much research experience and come back to the US for a PhD.

Bottomline, a first class degree from Nigeria can never compare with that from America, Europe or even China and India. Let's all wake up! You need to work extra to stand out.

@happyday, those schools u mentioned except for LSU and KSU are ranked among top 50 in the US and top 100 in the world. Please give them more credit! You would be amazed that they would still turn the guy down!
@bolded. Very true. I have a friend who graduated with 4.96 in Chem Eng from one of the top 5 schools in Naija. He applied to MIT, Princeton, Stanford. They all bounced him. So, no one sends your first class without research experience and our degrees don't even carry weight when placed beside degrees from foreign schools.
