How much can I use to start up?

Tuesday’s presentation of the 2016 budget estimates to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari did not go without a dramatic twist when the President surprised Senators and members of the House of Representatives with his timely arrival for the event.
The lawmakers were busy exchanging banter, strolling from row to row to greet themselves when Buhari suddenly walked into the chamber with the Vice-President, Mr. Yemi Osinbajo, following very close behind.
Some members were seen dashing to their seats while others stood by any available seat to honour the President as he walked past.
Buhari had specifically requested to present the budget to a joint session of the National Assembly at 10am.
The President arrived at the premises of the legislative building at exactly 10am and by 10.01am, he was already in the chamber of the House of Representatives, the venue of the ceremony, giving the lawmakers a little time to be orderly.
The drama could be blamed largely on members of the House of Representatives, who kept dashing to the seat of the Speaker, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, to make frequent consultations while time ticked away.
Besides, they chose the occasion to mark Dogara’s birthday.
The House had resumed sitting by 9am in a bid to treat a few items, including the passing of the 2015 Appropriation Amendment Bill, before receiving Buhari.
But, on entering the chamber, they abandoned the issues on their agenda and chose first to celebrate the Speaker by moving a motion to mark his 48th birthday on the floor.
Three lawmakers, Mr. Herman Hembe, Mr. Mohammed Wudil and Mr. Hassan Saleh, spent nearly 15 minutes of the time arguing and moving counter motions on how to mark the speaker’s birthday.
As time ticked away towards 10am, they were still busy insisting that they would sing for Dogara while the speaker would respond in his mother tongue.
The birthday song was eventually taken but Dogara opted to respond in English on the grounds that it was the country’s official language.
Senators, who apparently had been waiting at the entrance to join the Reps ahead of Buhari’s arrival, got information that the President had arrived and hurried into the chamber of the House.
Senate President, Bukola Saraki, led his colleagues into the chamber without waiting for the House to suspend its rules as had been the tradition.
Chairman, House Committee on Rules and Business, Mr. Oker Jev, was halfway into a motion on the 2015 amendment bill when the senators arrived at the green chamber.
A shocked Dogara tried to complain that the senators obstructed proceedings with their manner of entry, but his complaint drowned in the loud exchange of banter, hugs and shouts of excitement by most of the lawmakers.
It was in the middle of the disorder that Buhari walked in, catching the lawmakers off-guard.
There was more drama after the budget session ended and Buhari and the senators had left the chamber.
Members of the House began complaining to Dogara that they had not received bank alerts for their salaries and allowances.
They tried to oppose a move by Dogara to adjourn the House by shouting, “no alerts yet”; “please, we need the alerts.”
The Speaker had to calm their nerves by speaking reassuringly that the alerts would reach them on Wednesday (today).
“I assure you that by Wednesday, you will receive a message and it will be a good message. I wish you all Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year ahead,” he added.
He adjourned the House till January 12 amid grumbling by his colleagues.

The appeal court sitting in Ibadan has reaffirmed the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi at the April 11 gubernatorial elections. Report said the appeal made by former Governor Ladoja was dismissed by the appeal court for lack of merit.

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has instructed his lawyers to appeal today's judgment of the Court of Appeal which ordered fresh governorship election in the State. In a statement issued by Simeon Nwakaudu, Special Assistant to the Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, Governor Wike stated that he disagrees with the judgment, hence his decision to exhaust his constitutional right by challenging the Appeal Court judgment at the Supreme Court.

Governor Wike called on all his supporters and the people of Rivers State to remain calm as Justice will be done at the end of day.

He assured the people of the state that he will use all constitutional processes to protect the mandate they freely bestowed on him, hence his decision to approach the Supreme Court for further adjudication.


The governor said that he still remains the duly elected governor of Rivers State pending the determination of his appeal by the Supreme Court.

Governor Wike assured the people of Rivers State that all ongoing development projects will continue while his administration will continue to promote the security of lives and property across the state.

Three days after the governorship election in Bayelsa State was declared inconclusive, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is yet to fix a date for the supplementary election in the Southern Ijaw local government area of the state.
INEC’s director, Voter Education and Publicity (VEP), Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, said the commission was still consulting over the matter.
Chief Returning Officer for Bayelsa State 2015 governorship election, Prof. Zana Akpagu, had on Monday, announced that the election was inconclusive because of the violence witnessed in Southern Ijaw local government area.
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Seriake Dickson, was leading in six out of seven local government areas where the results were released.
But candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Timpre Sylva, rejected the cancellation of Souther Ijaw Local Government and is challenging the INEC’s decision in court. He won in only one local government.
However Uzzi said “We have not fixed a date for the supplementary election, we are still consulting. We will fixed a date after we finished the consultation,”.
He however did to state whether the consultation was in connection with the case instituted by Sylva against the cancellation of the election.
The Electoral Act gives INEC 14 days to conduct a supplementary election where there is an inconclusive poll. My question who and why are they consulting?

A fresh wave of agitation loomed yesterday with the former leader of the Niger Delta People’s Volunteer Force, Alhaji Mujahid Asari-Dokubo, giving the Federal Government a week ultimatum to hands off in an alleged plan to rig the governorship election in Bayelsa State andinstall the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Timipre Sylva, as winnerof the election.
In a statement made available to the Press in Yenagoa, the state capital,Dokubo-
Asari accused the Federal Government and its agencies of collaborating with the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC) to rig the election,warning that except government stays clear of the alleged complicity, the ex-militants would return to the creeks to resume agitation with consequenceson strategic oil installations.
If bynext week the Federal Government does not hands off from the Bayelsa polls by allowing the people to freely choose their leader but still interfering throughthe observed various guises and deception, then we would have no option than to return to the creeks to press for our rights as patriotic citizens being undulyoppressed and dehumanized all in the name of politics”, he stated.
He stated: “We have said it before that President Buhari is executing an anti-Ijawagenda and his aim is to steal our God-given resources to rebuild the northdestroyed by Boko Haram. That is why he is hell-bent on manipulating theelectoral process in Bayelsa State and hand it over to the APC.
They are exploiting Sylva’s greed and desperation for power and therefore using him tocarry out their evil agenda. But we want them to know that this country will goup in flames if they try it. Boko Haram will be a child’s play if PresidentBuhari and his APC think they can upturn the people’s mandate. It would be agrave injustice which can never stand. We are Ijaw people and we have neverbeen conquered”.
He noted that going by the results already declared by INEC, PDP’s candidate, SeriakeDickson, had won 6 of the 7 local governments declared with a margin of 33,154votes and has thus fulfilled constitutional requirement of 2/3 spread andpopular votes but without Southern Ijaw as the only local government remaining.
He has therefore called on the Federal Government to ensure the election is rescheduled andconducted in a transparent process as they will be watching to see if the government still interferes in theprocess till next week and would then launch “a full scale agitation to saveour people from modern day slavery of intimidation, oppression and dictators.

Pa Ojo Alabi has been a pensioner for the past 20 years. He has a burden in his heart which has bothered him for long, he has 5 children but non of them is employed.
Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has been touring the 16 local government councils in the state for the past two weeks where he's been solving one-on-one problems being encountered by government workers in each of the local government councils.
So today 30th November 2015, it's the turn of Ikole LG to have the governor in their midst, representatives of teachers and LG poured out their minds and the governor responded within the ambit of availability of funds to their satisfaction.
It's got to the turn of the pensioners to talk to the governor, Pa. Ojo Alabi who spoke on their behalf started by describing Fayose as a 'Radical Professor of Politics' showered encomiums on him for his efforts at putting smiles on the faces of Ekiti workers despite the lean purse of his administration.
Pa. Ojo who eloquently highlighted the need of the Local government pensioners later craved Mr. Governor's indulgence and explained to him how difficult it has been seeing his children remain unemployed even when they have the required qualifications, he singled out the case of one of his daughters, Miss Ojo Deborah Iyabo who has a university degree in Education, he handed over the lady's particulars to Mr. Fayose and appealed to him to help employ her.
An elated Mr. Fayose in his response commended Pa. Alabi's eloquence and style saying even though the state isn't recruiting for now, the lady's case will be an exception. Governor Fayose thereafter signed Deborah's particulars, handed it over to the Head of Service and told Pa. Ojo that his daughter will get her letter of appointment on or before Friday, 4th of December 2015.
The tour train is right now in Oye Ekiti, headquarters of Oye LGA of Ekiti State.

Francis Otunta, a professor of Mathematics, has been appointed the new vice chancellor of the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike in Abia.
This is contained in a statement signed by Prof. Anya Anya, the pro-Chancellor and chairman of the university’s governing council, made available on Friday in Umuahia.
The statement noted that the appointment was approved by the governing council following Mr. Otunta’s successful performance at an interview of shortlisted candidates for the position, which took place on Wednesday at the institution.
According to the statement, the appointment is for a single term of five years.
Mr. Otunta, who hails from Afikpo, Ebonyi State, was born on April 29, 1958, and became a professor at the University of Benin in August 2003.
He was the Rector, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Ebonyi from 2006 to 2014.
Mr. Otunta would replace Prof. Hilary Edeoga, whose tenure would lapse in March 2016. (NAN)
