The Senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Sen. Dino Melaye has declared himself winner in the suit challenging his election at the National and State Houses of Assembly Elections Petition tribunal sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State by Sen. Smart Adeyemi.
Prime News can reliably report that Sen. Melaye made this declaration at the annual Ijumu Day Celebration held at the Olujumu Palace in Iyara, Ijumu, Kogi State.
“I have won the case at the Tribunal. There is no need for panic.” He said in a video in the possession of this Newspaper.
In the video, Sen. Melaye who sounded confident stated that “all those following Smart Adeyemi are wasting their time, they should go and rest. “He boasted in the video.
Prime News sought the opinion of legal experts on the implication of making such statements when in truth the presiding Judge has not given a ruling on the case before him.
Prime News spoke to several lawyers and they all alluded to the fact that the attitude of Sen. Melaye was” despicable and a clear contempt of the court that occurred outside the court.”
“When a case is before a judge, it is expected that parties involved in the case are not supposed to comment on it in public until judgement has been passed. In the event that a party in the case makes a statement that seems like or capable of misleading the public or painting a picture of a compromised judge/or having fore knowledge of the ruling in advance, it is then contempt of the court that occurred outside the court”. A lawyer stated.
In definition, Contempt of Court generally refers to conduct that defies disrespects or insults the authority or dignity of a court. It can take place either directly or indirectly. Direct contempt happens in the presence of the court, while indirect contempt occurs outside the presence of the court.
It would be recalled that Sen. Smart Adeyemi had approached the tribunal to reclaim his mandate on the basis that there were irregularities that affected the outcome of the March 28, 2015 senatorial elections. Justice Akon Ikpeme, the chairman of the three man panel had reserved judgement for Saturday 10 th October 2015.

The allegation by governor of Kaduna State, Nasir el-Rufai that the administration of former president Goodluck Jonathan spent N64billion in five years to mark the nation’s independence anniversaries has been described as another tissue of lies from him.
A statement on Sunday by the immediate past Minister and Deputy Chairman, National Planning Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman said perhaps former president Olusegun Obasanjo was right in his assessment of el-rufai when he said in his latest memoir, My Watch that his vivid recollection of him (el rufai) is his penchant for lying, for unfair embellishment of stories and his inability to sustain loyalty for long. “That exactly is what el-rufai has done with his ungodly fabrication of lies against Jonathan government.”
The governor had alleged on a facebook post that N13billion was spent in 2011, N15billion in 2012 and N14billion in 2013 and N22billion allegedly spent in 2014.
Putting a lie to the allegation the former National Planning Minister said only N332.6million was spent on the anniversaries between 2012 and 2014.
He challenged the Office of the Government of the Federation (OSGF) to publish these details for the consumption of the public.
He said: “for the record, a breakdown of our spending for this event between 2012 and 2104 goes thus; 2012-107.6million; 2013-45million and 2014 had 180million. So, the question here is where did the billions as claimed by el-rufai emanate from? Even though that of 2010 and 2011 are not handy now, but it should be known that they all fall within the same bracket as the one stated, except that the 2010 anniversary was a golden one when the country marked her 50 year of independence. But even then, not such outrageous sum was either budgeted or expended.
“Again, it is germane to explain the increase in the 2013 anniversary spending for the purpose of accountability.
The National Honours Award Investiture was incorporated into the celebration, thus making it two events in one, hence the N174, 800,000.00 budget. We also want to add that the said award investiture could not hold in 2013 and the approved budget rolled over and was utilized to organise the investiture in 2014.”
He said he has taken the pain to respond to El-Rufai though ordinarily, “we would have allowed this to go as just ranting of a favour seeker, but for the sake of ordinary Nigerians who were abreast of happenings under the administration and also those who never did, we will like to set the record straight.
“It is important to correct the misinformation so that the unsuspecting public would not be misled.”
He warned government functionaries especially in the present administration to desist from abusing their immunity and destruction of history by trading on lies just to gain cheap popularity or curry one favour or the other from certain quarters.
He also urged President Muhammadu Buhari to be cautious against being misled by the likes of el-Rufai who are hell bent on misinforming the Nigerian public.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and erstwhile Lagos State Governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, are locked in a war of attrition over the formation of President Muhammadu Buhari’s cabinet. Already, former Lagos State Commissioner for Finance and a nominee of Tinubu into the cabinet, Mr. Wale Edun, has become the first casualty of the ego war.
Sources told New Telegraph that Edun, who Tinubu had recommended to Buhari to be Minister of Finance, has been dropped despite being screened by the Department of State Services (DSS). He is to be replaced by former Lagos State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Yemi Cardoso, as a Lagos representative in the cabinet.
Cardoso is the chairman, Citibank Nigeria Limited. In preparation for the coveted seat, Edun had led the All Progressives Congress (APC) delegation to Washington to attend the spring meetings of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) in April.
Edun’s problem started when a group of influential Lagos indigenes, including traditional rulers and some of his colleagues that served in the Tinubu administration, kicked against his choice as a Lagos State ministerial nominee. The opposition informed the decision of Tinubu to ensure Edun becomes Ogun State nominee. But Obasanjo and the Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, also kicked.
A source informed New Telegraph that Obasanjo called Tinubu and advised him to desist from pushing Edun as Ogun State nominee. He was said to have warned that Ogun people would not allow Tinubu to fill the slot of the state with somebody whose work and career were rooted in Lagos State.
The former president reportedly cited the example of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, from Ogun State, whom Tinubu nominated as vicepresident, adding that he considered Osinbajo to be more of a Lagosian than an indigene of Ogun State. It was learnt that Obasanjo and Amosun have agreed to give the state’s slot in the cabinet to a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Auditor, Chief Bode Mustapha. Sources said the two recent visits of Obasanjo to Buhari in Abuja was first to submit his ministerial list and for further consultations.
A source in the presidency told New Telegraph that Obasanjo’s nominees include: former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun); former Governor of Ekiti State and now the Deputy National Chairman (South) of the APC, Chief Segun Oni (Ekiti); Mustapha (Ogun); former Minister of Education, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili and erstwhile Governor, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Chukwuma Soludo.
The source added that the submission of the ministerial list by Obasanjo to the president informed the September 9 visit of Tinubu and former Interim National Chairman of APC, Chief Bisi Akande, to Buhari, 24 hours after the former president visited. “Tinubu and Akande’s visit to President Buhari on September 9 was an impromptu meeting. An influential official in the presidency told them of Obasanjo’s surreptitious moves to corner the ministerial nominees from the South-West.
This is why the two leaders visited,” the source said. At the meeting with Buhari, Tinubu and Akande reportedly told the president that South-West APC leaders would not accept a situation where Obasanjo would determine those who become ministers.
It was learnt that Tinubu and Akande did not oppose the choice of Oyinlola as a minister representing Osun State. “It was a moral issue. Obasanjo is not a member of the APC and cannot appropriate the positions of the zone to himself. The South-West leaders have been meeting for two months on the ministerial nominee, only for Obasanjo to sit in Ota and draw up a ministerial list. That is why the leaders kicked against the idea. “That will be killing the party in the South-West.
He can’t be an alternate APC. Obasanjo should be respected as a leader, but he can’t hijack what belongs to the region. “On Obasanjo’s ministerial list, former Governor Oyinlola featured just as his name featured from the list submitted from the state.
There was no resistance to Oyinlola’s nominee because that was part of the agreement before his defection from the PDP to the APC. The party has fulfilled one leg of the agreement by ceding the senatorial slot to Senator Isiaka Adeleke who also defected from PDP to the APC,” an influential member of the APC said. The source added that based on Tinubu’s complaint, Buhari reportedly promised to look into the issue.
As it is, Obasanjo has been given two ministerial slots of Ogun and Osun – Mustapha and Oyinlola – while Tinubu and South- West leaders would fill the four other slots remaining in the geopolitical zone.
One of sources said Buhari, who had promised to constitute his cabinet by September 30, would submit the ministerial list to the National Assembly next week either before his trip to New York on Tuesday to attend the United Nations conference, or on his return from the trip. In addition, it was learnt that the DSS had screened ministerial nominees and forwarded its report to the president.
Those who failed the integrity test had been replaced. It was learnt that Buhari had settled for former Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, as the nominee from the state; notwithstanding the opposition against his candidacy from top officials of the PDP government in the state. Amaechi, who was the Director-General of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, lost out in the bid for the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF). One of the sources also said a former Governor of old Abia State, Dr. Ogbannaya Onu, had been asked to choose between being a minister and getting an ambassadorial posting. The source said Onu, who also lost out in the SGF race, had settled for the Ebonyi ministerial slot. Former presidential candidate and renowned economist, Prof. Pat Utomi, is the likely nominee of Delta State.
A group of professionals of which Vice-President Osinbajo belongs, is rooting for Utomi. Former Governor of Kano State and now a senator, Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso, is likely going to make the ministerial list. Kwankwaso, who was Minister of Defence in the Obasanjo administration, may retain the position in the Buhari cabinet.
Although, a former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Abdurahman Dambazzau, who is being touted as the next Minister of Defence, has been screened, one of the sources said he might be given another portfolio.
“The president is considering having a civilian as his Minister of Defence. The basis for this is that there is always a friction between the service chiefs and the minister of defence with a military background. Don’t forget that the president is a retired general. So, if Kwankwaso makes it to the cabinet, he may end up as defence minister having held the portfolio before,” the source said.
In Edo State, either former Executive Chairman, the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mrs. Ifueko Omogui-Okauru or erstwhile Special Adviser to Obasanjo on Programme and Policy Monitoring, Prof. Julius Ihonvbere, may get the state’s slot. Omogui-Okauru, who stepped down as FIRS chairman in April 2012, was recently appointed by the Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El- Rufai, to head the Kaduna State Tax Reform Committee. Ihonvbere is the Secretary to the Edo State Government (SSG) and believed to be the nominee of Governor Adams Oshiomhole.
New Telegraph learnt that the only name submitted for consideration as minister for Kwara State is that of Mr. Bolaji Abdullahi, an ally of the Senate President Bukola Saraki. Abdullahi served as Minister of Sports in the Goodluck Jonathan administration and was the Deputy Director, Directorate of Policy and Strategy of the APC Presidential Campaign Organisation. It is not clear if President Buhari will accept Abdullahi’s candidacy. If he does, then the National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, may end up as Special Adviser to the President on Aviation.
But if the president rejects Abdullahi, then a technocrat or Mohammed may fill the Kwara ministerial slot.
In Ekiti, the hope of former Governors Niyi Adebayo, Segun Oni and Kayode Fayemi was dashed by the choice of human rights activist, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN). Vice-President Osinbajo was said to have, in conjunction with Tinubu, pushed for his candidacy as the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. It was learnt that General Adeyinka Adebayo (rtd) lobbied retired Generals to have his son, Niyi, as Ekiti nominee.
New Telegraph reliably learnt that the APC South- West leaders have agreed that the ambassadorial slot for Ekiti is reserved for Fayemi. In Adamawa, Boss Gida Mustapha, a lawyer, has been tipped by the president as minister. Mustapha lost the APC governorship ticket to Senator Bindow Jibrilla, now governor.
He was a member of the Ahmed Joda-led transition committee set up by the president. He is a former Deputy National Chairman of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). Alhaji Abubakar Malami (SAN), a member of the Ahmed Joda transition committee, has been tapped for the Kebbi ministerial slot. Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State has introduced a new school levy in Ekiti State, and has increased previous charges paid by students in government-owned primary and secondary schools across the state.
A new policy agreed to at an education summit in the state last week requires students in public secondary schools to pay N1, 000 per term.
Although the summit recommended N500 per term for primary school pupils, the governor is yet to approve it.
The governor solicited the support of teachers for the new policy.
The summit, which held on September 8, was convened as part of efforts to enhance the State’s ranking in senior secondary school examinations conducted by the West African Examinations Council and National Examinations Council.
The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Jide Egunjobi, while speaking with principals and teachers of the schools in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, said parents and teachers approved the introduction of the “Education Development Levy”.
“Before now, secondary school students were paying N100 as PTA levy, N300 for Extra Lesson and N600 as Examination Fee, while primary school students were paying N100 as PTA levy, N300 for Extra Lesson and N200 as Examination fee, making N600 per term,” Mr. Egunjobi said.
According to him, besides the Educational Development Levy of N1, 000, secondary
school students will also pay N500 PTA levy, N600 as examination fee and N300 for Extra Lessons, all totaling N2, 400 cost per term.
The proposal for primary school, which is awaiting the governor’s approval, stipulates that the pupils would pay N100 as PTA levy, N100 for Extra Lessons, N100 for Examination, totaling N800 per term.
An estimated 178,263 pupils are in the 879 public primary schools; while there are 48,960
in Junior Secondary Schools and 55,677 in Senior Secondary Schools in Ekiti State, totaling 282,900.
The governor through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, urged the teachers to fully implement the resolutions of the summit.
“Resolutions of the Education Summit will be made available to you all and you must follow it diligently. We all agreed to the resolutions and don’t do anything outside the recommendations of the summit,” he said.
“Teachers are important and you are the foundation moulders and if the foundation is faulty there is nothing we can do. You are special and personal to me because of the consequences of an untrained child are enormous. If you have all the money in the world and leave it for a child and he is untrained then it is nothing.”
Mr. Fayose recalled that during his first tenure in office, he withdrew his children from private schools and put them in state schools then to feel what others felt as parents with children in public schools.
The governor added that this year’s Teachers’ Day would be celebrated in grand style and that best teachers across the three senatorial districts would be appointed as Tutors-General for secondary schools and Head Teachers-General for primary schools.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr Peter Ayodele Fayose has made it clear to Obas that not in his government will territories in Ekiti be bulkanised. yesterday hit back at former Presidential candidate of
Congress for Progressive Change [CPC], Gen. Muhammadu
Buhari who accused his regime of being behind the
destruction of oil sector.
Babangida, a Chieftain of Peoples Democratic Party [PDP]
threatened to expose the “holier-than thou-attitude” of Gen.
Buhari.
The former head of state, who spoke through Prince Kassim
Afegbua, his media adviser, reminded Gen. Buhari that those
who live in glass houses should not throw stones.
Besides, Babaginda, the former PDP Presidential aspirant,
urged President Goodluck Jonathan to learn to accept
criticisms.
He also advised Dr. Jonathan to look elsewhere, not him, if
he is blaming past leaders that are criticizing him.
Afegbua said: “On President Jonathan, there is nothing
wrong in criticism if it is constructive and in the interest of
the country. Gen. Babangida is one unique former President

look elsewhere, certainly not IBB.

Sen Dino Melaye of Kogi West Senatorial Zone has urged the All Progressives Congress to respect the view of President Muahammdu Buhari on the emergence of the Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki. While reacting to the controversial emergence of Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Yakubu Dogara, shortly after they were elected, Buhari had said he did not have any preferred candidates for the principal posts but added that he would have preferred that the choices of the party emerged. The choices of the APC for Senate presidency and speakership were Senator Ahmed Lawan and Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, respectively. Specifically, Melaye was referring to a statement by Buhari’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, in which the President said that he was willing to work with whoever the lawmakers elected. In a series of tweets on his official Twitter handle, Melaye faulted the APC leaders for attacking Saraki. He said, “President Buhari said the election of Saraki followed constitutional provisions. At that point, the party and its leaders ought to have slowed down. Mr. President said he would work with whoever was elected. At that point, the party leaders ought to have taken direction from Buhari, who is the National Leader of the APC.” He also said “The President is the National Leader of APC. The moment he said he had no preference, the party should have respected Buhari. Nigerians must realise that the people’s sovereignty is far greater than the party’s supremacy. Just like the Bible is dearer to me than the constitution.” Melaye said he had no regrets supporting Saraki, promising to protect and defend the people of his senatorial district and the Nigerian constitution. He added, “The gullibility of so many on the social media is embarrassing. I have no regret supporting Saraki. I worked and voted for competence. Barely 24 hours after the labour unions suspended a seven-week strike in Osun State, workers in the employ of the state government have declared another strike.
The labour leaders declared a fresh strike when they discovered that only 50 per cent of salaries was paid to workers on Grade Level 8 and above.
?The workers, under the umbrella of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) had suspended the strike after signing a memorandum of understanding on Monday, detailing how they wanted their salaries to be paid.
Soon after, there were complaints that only 50 per cent of salaries were paid to workers on Grade Level 8 and above.
Chairman of the state chapter of the NLC, Jacob Adekomi, in a television announcement monitored on Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Osogbo, on Tuesday evening, said workers should not resume as earlier directed.
Meanwhile the state government has appealed to workers for calm and understanding over the financial predicament of the state.
In a statement signed by the media aide to Governor Rauf Aregbesola, government said, “The attention of the State Government of Osun has been drawn to a growing discontent among workers in the state on the partial payment of salary to workers from Grade Level 08 and above.
“The Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, wishes to appeal for calm and understanding from all workers in the state.
“Government wishes to state that it realised the need to accommodate our senior citizens, the pensioners, within the limited funds available, in order to ensure an all-inclusive payment that will alleviate the hardship that the delay in salaries and pensions had caused. It should be noted that happiness never decreases by being shared.
“We are committed to meeting our obligations to the workers as more funds become available to settle such. This period calls for deep understanding of our challenges and we appeal to all and sundry for cooperation in this regard.”

Former governor of Jigawa state, Sule Lamido, and his two sons Aminu and Mustapha are currently seeking bail at a Federal High Court in Kano.
Lamido and his sons were remanded in Kano prison alongside one last week Thursday and were later transferred to Kuje prison in Abuja on Monday.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, had arraigned them before the court on a 28-count charge of corruption and money laundering.
There are also speculations that the ex-governor and his sons might be granted bail today.
Gabriel Kolawole, the only vacation judge at the Abuja court, is yet to arrive at the court as at the time of filing this report.

Ekiti State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to instruct the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC, to keep a close eye on how the N2.1 billion bailout to Ekiti is utilised by the state governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose.

The opposition party in the state equally called on the Presidency to order the Chief of Army Staff , Lt. Gen. Kenneth Minimah, to remove the men of the Nigerian Army attached to the convoy of the Governor to forestall his alleged misuse of security agents.


State Publicity Secretary of the APC in Ekiti, Taiwo Olatunbosun noted in a statement he issued on Saturday that the obligation lies on the APC as the opposition party to call the attention of the Presidency to the alleged unwholesome attitude of security agencies in the state.


According to the release, “The President should ensure financial discipline in Ekiti State through the instrumentality of anti-corruption bodies to guide against the misappropriation of the bail-out funds that have already been seen as a jackpot by state government leaders.

The party went on to hail Buhari over bailout plan for states in order to settle the arrears of workers’ salaries, saying the measure would relieve Nigerian families from poverty and provide the energy needed for the challenge of returning the nation to the path of productivity for the general well-being of Nigerians.
