Politics › Wike’s Appointment Of Rivers Chief Judge Is Illegal – Ebun-olu Adegboruwa by Shegman22(op): 10:39am On May 30, 2015
A legal luminary, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has described the appointment of acting Rivers State Chief Judge by Nyesom Wike as illegal.

Wike made the announcement shortly after he was sworn-in on Friday.

However, in a statement obtained by DAILY POST, Adegboruwa condemned his decision.

Read full statement below-

“It is heart warming that the erstwhile Governor-elect of Rivers State, Hon Nyesom Wike, has now been sworn in to fully assume his mandate as the governor, given the needless controversy and tension that sorrounded the exercise. In the course of his inaugural speech, the governor announced the appointment of the Hon Justice Daisy Okocha, as the substantive Hon Chief Judge of Rivers State, to be sworn in on Monday, June 1.

The appointment of a state chief judge is regulated by section 271(1) of the 1999 Constitution, which stipulates that such appointment will be made by the governor, acting upon the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, subject to confirmation by the House of Assembly of the State.

I have no doubt that the Hon Justice Daisy Okocha may be eminently qualified to be elevated to the exalted office of the Hon Chief Judge of Rivers State, but such announcement, of a statutory appointment, on the podium, on the very day of inauguration, belittles the Constitution. Governor Nyesom Wike is well entitled to constitute his entire cabinet at the stadium today, during his swearing in, as the Constitution gives him very wide discretion in that regard, without any condition.

However, the office of the Hon Chief Judge of a state, is not such as to be contained in the inaugural speech of a governor, who has not even resumed in office, how much less become aware of any recommendation from the national judicial council, which is a pre-condition for the appointment. This has only gone to prove how deep rooted governor Wike was, in the whole crisis rocking the Rivers State judiciary, and indeed a painful vindication of former governor Amaechi’s allegation of external influence, in the state judiciary palaver.

Whereas we are glad with governors who are serious minded and action conscious, given the years of rot and stagnation that our nation has witnessed, such national enthusiasm, for immediate performance, should not be mistaken for a tolerance of very rash decisions, that seem to rubbish mandatory constitutional requirements.

The question to ask is this: how did Nyesom Wike, as governor-elect, get to know of the official recommendation of the national judicial council, in respect of Rivers State chief judge, as to then announce her appointment, on the very day of his inauguration. We should endeavor not to make governance seem like acting or some form of comedy of errors. And the governor then announced that the new chief judge will be sworn in on Monday June 1, when the state house of assembly has not met to confirm the inauguration appointment. This is totally uncalled for.

There is need for our leaders to be well advised and properly guided, before taking fundamental decisions affecting the body polity. In this case for instance, wise counsel dictates that the governor should have been better advised by his attorney-general, on the issue of appointment of the Hon Chief Judge, after his cabinet has been duly constituted.

Politics › Impeachment: Last Minute Victims And Survivors by Shegman22(op): 7:48am On May 16, 2015
There have been impeachment moves in some states ahead
of the May 29 inauguration of a new government. GBENRO
ADEOYE examines the intricacies, the victims and those
who have survived so far
A wind of impeachment moves blowing across Nigeria has
already swept a few political office holders off their seats
while some others are battling to prevent their names from
joining the victims’ list.
After the last general elections, the polity witnessed a major
power shift which threw out the Peoples Democratic Party.
The party was defeated after its 16 years in power by the All
Progressives Congress.
In the meantime, the handover date is May 29, 2015 but
events seem to have thrown up a plethora of intrigues in
the political circle since the conclusion of the polls.
Lawmakers in Ekiti, Ondo, Enugu and Niger states have
been busy with impeachment or counter-impeachment
moves. Some politicians have fallen victims while some
others have survived, albeit thus far.
Ondo State
A former Ondo State Deputy Governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi,
who defected from the PDP to APC on March 26, 2015, was
the first political office holder to fall victim of the
impeachment saga. He had said his defection was “in the
best interest of peace, stability and good governance of the
state and for the overall development of the South-West and
the nation.”
But it didn’t take long for the decision to cost him his
position as he was impeached by members of the state
House of Assembly a month after his defection.
Twenty-two of the 26 members of the Assembly supported
Olanusi’s impeachment after the motion for his removal
was moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Ifedayo
Akinsoyinu.
Some of the allegations levelled against Olanusi include
financial misappropriation, absenteeism from official duties
and causing disaffection in the state cabinet. However, the
public suspected that his crime went beyond the allegations
and that it was largely due to his defection to the APC.
Although, Olanusi and the state Governor, Dr. Olusegun
Mimiko, worked together on the PDP platform for more
than five years, the former deputy governor was said to
have had a frosty relationship with his boss.
Olanusi ran with Mimiko on the platform of the Labour Party
in 2007, becoming the deputy governor in 2009 after the
Court of Appeal declared Mimiko the winner of the disputed
governorship election in the state.
He ran again with Mimiko on the platform of the same party
in 2014 before they both defected to the PDP in October
2014.
But following his defection to the APC, some political
watchers said it was only a matter of time for the gale of
impeachment to hit the Sunshine State.
They described Olanusi’s defection as a moral issue which
was not legally wrong.
For example, a lawyer and political analyst, Mr. Wahab
Shittu, said Olanusi’s defection could have led to distrust
between him and his boss.
He said, “Legally, there is freedom of association. So, it is
not legally wrong but it may have raised moral issues.
“You only work with somebody you can trust and if he is on
the same page with you. Once that is not there, then you
begin to suspect each other. If there is an atmosphere of
suspicion and distrust, governance cannot be efficient.”
Shittu, however, advised politicians to always be ready to be
democrats and follow the rule of law at all times.
Enugu State
Less than four weeks before the end of his tenure, Governor
Sullivan Chime engaged in a serious battle to keep his job
as some members of the Enugu State House of Assembly
began a move to impeach him as the governor of the state.
But events soon changed and the hunter suddenly became
the hunted.
The state House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, Mr.
Eugene Odoh, had accused Chime of gross misconduct and
forging of a N12bn supplementary budget in 2012.
Chime’s other alleged misdeeds include the allocation of
parts of a plot of land designated for the Enugu
International Conference Centre and the old Eastern Nigeria
Industrial Layout to private residents and developers.
But in an unexpected twist, another group of lawmakers
loyal to Chime countered the impeachment move and
suspended Odoh. They also elected a new Speaker.
Besides the move by the 14-member group to impeach
Chime, the Odoh-led group had also moved against some of
his perceived enemies in the Assembly, including the
Deputy Speaker, Chime Oji, who is said to be the governor’s
relative.
The anti-Chime lawmakers also removed the mace in a bid
to prevent their colleagues who are perceived loyalists of
the governor from sitting to counter their impeachment
move. But pro-Chime lawmakers, including Oji, turned the
table around and held their own sitting less than an hour
later, allegedly with a different mace.
At the sitting, the eight pro-Chime lawmakers suspended
some key anti-Chime members of the House, including
Odoh, and then went ahead to impeach him, citing that his
suspension would create a vacuum in the House. Odoh and
other key officers were thereafter stripped of their positions
and benefits.
The lawmaker representing Nsukka East Constituency, Mr.
Chinedu Nwamba, was swiftly nominated and sworn in as
the new Speaker of the House.
Odoh, who received his purported impeachment as shock,
described it as “shameful.”
“There is nothing like removal of the Speaker. It is mere
exercise in futility and they have shown the world the kind
of impunity going on in Enugu State,” he said.
While addressing journalists later, Chime boasted that he
could not be impeached. Therefore, he is considered a
survivor thus far.
He said, “Nobody has served me the notice of allegation. By
their own showing, they are 14 members including the
Speaker who should not be counted. So they are 13. That is
why they have not activated anything.
“That is the stupidity and folly of what they have set out to
do. They are all looking for money which I do not have.
Fourteen of them cannot activate this process. No Chief
Judge will listen to them. The allegation of forgery in the
2012 budget of N12bn is false. The supplementary budget
of 2012 was revised. Money was re-allocated for certain
projects and no extra money was incurred. I am not quite
sure they know the meaning of forgery. The allegation of
forgery came to me as a rude shock.”
Meanwhile, Shittu described the use of impeachment in
Nigeria as “not just a legal weapon but also a political
weapon” which is “normally deployed to settle
constitutional scores as well as political scores.”
Speaking on the wave of impeachment moves sweeping
across the country, which Shittu blamed on “political
permutations,” he also faulted some ambiguities in the
constitution as regards impeachment process in the
legislature.
According to him, “what can be the ground for
impeachment is not properly defined in the constitution.”
He said, “For instance, gross misconduct is not properly
defined, so it is possible for lawmakers to remove any
speaker under any pretence whatsoever and say it’s for
gross misconduct. So it is at the whims and caprices of
lawmakers. If they don’t like the face of the office holder,
they can accuse him of gross misconduct.”
Last year, the Enugu State lawmakers impeached a former
deputy governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi, for gross
misconduct and other allegations including running a
poultry in his official residence.
According to Jiti Ogunye, another lawyer and political
analyst, the plethora of impeachments recently witnessed in
the polity suggests that it is being used “as a tool for
settling political scores, accomplishing political witch-hunt
and for dealing with political adversary.”
This, he said, contradicted the use of impeachment as a
“veritable tool available in the nation’s constitution to
sanction and punish erring public officers.”
Niger State
Like Chime, the Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu
Babangida Aliyu, is still a survivor as the plot by members
of the state House of Assembly to impeach him was
stopped by a Minna High Court’s interim injunction, which
restrained the lawmakers from setting in motion such a
process.
Earlier, Adamu Usman was impeached by 19 of the 25
members of the Assembly before they swore in Isah Kawu
as the new Speaker. The situation is not that simple though
as both Usman and Kawu consider themselves as the
bonafide Speaker of the state Assembly.
In the ensuing confusion, the police and other security
agents sealed off the Assembly complex and prevented
workers from gaining access to the place. But the
lawmakers, led by Kawu during the week, reconvened at the
Assembly complex following an approval by the state police
command.
Ekiti State
The drama in Ekiti State between PDP Governor Ayodele
Fayose and APC factional lawmakers have gone on for over
six months, but the APC’s victory in the March 28
presidential election further fuelled the lawmakers’ resolve
to remove the governor from office. Since Buhari’s victory,
the lawmakers have stepped up their impeachment
campaign against Fayose.
Following Fayose’s victory at the poll last year, he met a
legislature dominated by APC members and soon trouble
broke out between the Dr. Adewale Omirin-led state House
of Assembly and the governor.
But in a controversial move, an eight-man pro-Fayose
lawmakers, led by Dele Olugbemi, impeached Omirin and
took control of the legislature. With the alleged support of
security apparatus, the Omirin-led faction has allegedly
been prevented from gaining access into the Assembly
complex.
Efforts to reconcile the warring “combatants” have also
failed with the Omirin-led group alleging foul play by the
governor.
While some analysts believe the Omirin-led lawmakers may
want a nine-day window period between May 29 and June
6, 2015, when the APC would have taken over at the Federal
Government to impeach the governor, but Ogunye said this
could be impossible as Fayose could inaugurate the House
of Assembly on May 29. http://www.punchng.com/politics/impeachment-last-minute-victims-and-survivors/

After eight days of being abandoned by
his parents in cardboard and
subsequently buried alive by relatives
who believed he had died, a Chinese baby
born with a cleft lip has been rescued
alive, media has reported. The report said
water and air were able to get into the
box.
The baby was discovered by a woman
who heard him crying while picking
herbs. The baby was spitting soil when he
was examined by doctors last week.
According to CCTV, five people including
three relatives have been detained for
attempted murder. Authorities say a
disabled child in China is a huge drain on
a family's resources as parents cannot
afford expensive medical and school fees
for special children.

Crime › 9 US Police Officers Fired Over Death Of Young Nigerian Man In Their Custody by Shegman22(op): 9:00pm On May 10, 2015
From UK Daily Mail
The sheriff released no findings from the
investigations into Ajibade’s death, which is
still considered an open case as prosecutors
weigh possible criminal charges. However,
the sheriff’s office did provide a February 9
memo reminding deputies that they were
prohibited from using stun guns on detainees
already in restraints.
‘Do not utilize any conducted electrical
weapon to gain control of a detainee who is
in full restraints while in a restraint chair,’
the memo said, noting that detainees with
both their hands and feet bound were to be
considered fully restrained.
Sheriff’s officials have previously said
Ajibade was placed in a restraining chair in
an isolation cell after he became combative
during booking and injured three deputies.
One deputy suffered a concussion and a
broken nose, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities have declined to publicly release
the report on Ajibade’s autopsy, citing the
open investigation.
The fired deputies include two supervisors —
Cpl. Maxine Evans and Cpl. Jason Kenny —
who were suspended after Ajibade died. The
Associated Press could not find a phone
number for either deputy Friday evening.
The sheriff deeply regrets the death of Mr.
Ajibade,’ said a statement released by the
sheriff’s office Friday. It said new policies
implemented since Ajibade’s death include
security measures to audit the use of stun
guns at the jail as well as booking procedures
to ensure jail medical staff are notified
immediately when a detainee requiring
medication arrives. http://www.informationng.com/?p=291275
Politics › Re: Yorubas Are The Problem With Nigeria - By Sanusi Lamido Sanusi by Shegman22(op): 10:30am On May 07, 2015
Shegman22:
In sum, the Yoruba political
leadership, as mentioned by
Balarabe Musa, has shown itself
over the years to be incapable of
rising above narrow tribal
interests and reciprocating
goodwill from other sections of
the country by treating other
groups with respect. Practically
every crisis in Nigeria since
independence has its roots in
this attitude.
The Yoruba elite and
area-boy politics;
Igbo marginalisation and
the responsible limits of
retribution; and
The Yoruba Factor and
"Area-boy" Politics.
My views on the Yoruba
political leadership have been
thoroughly articulated in some
of my writings, prime among
which was " Afenifere: Syllabus
of Errors" published by This Day
(The Sunday Newspaper) on
Sept 27, 1998. There was also an
earlier publication in the weekly
Trust entitled " The Igbo, the
Yoruba and History" (Aug. 21,
1998).
In sum, the Yoruba political
leadership, as mentioned by
Balarabe Musa, has shown itself
over the years to be incapable of
rising above narrow tribal
interests and reciprocating
goodwill from other sections of
the country by treating other
groups with respect. Practically
every crisis in Nigeria since
independence has its roots in
this attitude.
The Yoruba elite were the first,
in 1962, to attempt a violent
overthrow of an elected
government in this country. In
1966, it was the violence in the
West which provided an avenue
for the putsch of 15th January.
After Chief Awolowo lost to
Shagari in 1983 elections, it was
the discontent and bad publicity
in the South-West which led to
the Buhari intervention.
When Buhari jailed UPN
governors like Ige and
Onabanjo, the South-Western
press castigated that good
government and provided the
right mood for IBB to take over
power. As soon as IBB cleared
UPN governors of charges
against them in a politically
motivated retrial, he became the
darling of the South-West.
When IBB annulled the
primaries in which Adamu
Ciroma and Shehu Yar Adua
emerged as presidential
candidates in the NRC and SDP,
he was hailed by the South-
West. When the same man
annulled the June 12, 1993
elections in which Abiola was
the front-runner, the South-
West now became defenders of
democracy.
When it seemed Sani Abacha
was sympathetic to Abiola, the
South-West supported his take-
over. He was in fact invited by a
prominent NADECO member to
take over in a published letter
shortly before the event. Even
though Abiola had won the
elections in the North, the North
was blamed for its annulment.
When Abdulsalam Abubakar
started his transition, the
Yoruba political leadership
through NADECO presented a
memorandum on a Government
of National Unity that showed
complete disrespect for the
intelligence and liberties of
other Nigerians.
Subsequently, they formed a
tribal party which failed to meet
minimum requirements for
registration, but was registered
all the same to avoid the
violence that was bound to
follow non-registration, given
the area-boy mentality of South-
West politicians. Having rejected
an Obasanjo candidacy and
challenged the election as a
fraud in court, we now find a
leading member of the AD in the
government, a daughter of an
Afenifere leader as Minister of
State, and Awolowo´s daughter
as Ambassador, all appointed by
a man who won the election
through fraud.
Meanwhile, nothing has been
negotiated for the children of
Abiola, the focus of Yoruba
political activity. In return for
these favours, the AD solidly
voted for Evan Enwerem as
Senate President. This is a man
who participated in the two-
million- man March for Abacha
´s self-succession. He also is
reputed to have hosted a
meeting of governors during
IBB´s transition, demanding
that June 12 elections should
never be de-annulled and
threatening that the East would
go to war if this was done.
When Ibrahim Salisu Buhari
was accused of swearing to a
false affidavit, the Yoruba
political elite correctly took up
the gauntlet for his resignation.
When an AD governor, Bola
Tinubu, swears to a false
affidavit that he attended an Ivy
League University which he did
not attend, we hear excuses.
For so many years, the Yoruba
have inundated this country
with stories of being
marginalised and of a civil
service dominated by
northerners through quota
system. The Federal Character
Commission has recently
released a report which shows
that the South-West accounts for
27.8% of civil servants in the
range GL08 to GL14 and a full
29.5% of GL 15 and above. One
zone out of six zones controls a
full 30% of the civil service
leaving the other five zones to
share the remaining 70%. We
find the same story in the
economy, in academia, in
parastatals.
Yet in spite of being so
dominant, the Yoruba
complained and complained of
marginalization. Of recent, in
recognition of the trauma which
hit the South-West after June 12,
the rest of the country forced
everyone out of the race to
ensure that a South-Westerner
emerged, often against the best
advice of political activists.
Instead of leading a path of
reconciliation and strong
appreciation, the Yoruba have
embarked on short-sighted
triumphalism, threatening other
"nationalities" that they ( who
after all lost the election) will
protect Obasanjo ( who was
forced on them). No less a
person than Bola Ige has made
such utterances.
To further show that they were
in charge, they led a cult into
the Hausa area of Sagamu,
murdered a Hausa woman and
nothing happened. In the
violence that followed, they
killed several Hausa residents,
with Yoruba leaders like Segun
Osoba, reminding Nigerians of
the need to respect the culture
of their host communities. This
would have continued were it
not for the people of Kano who
showed that they could also
create their own Oro who would
only be appeased through the
shedding of innocent Yoruba
blood.
I say all this, to support
Balarabe Musa´s statement, that
the greatest problem to nation-
building in Nigeria are the
Yoruba Bourgeoisie. I say this
also to underscore my point that
until they change this attitude,
no conference can solve the
problems of Nigeria. We cannot
move forward if the leadership
of one of the largest ethnic
groups continues to operate, not
like statesmen, but like common
area boys.
iii.The Igbo Factor and the
Reasonable Limits of
Retribution.
The Igbo people of Nigeria have
made a mark in the history of
this nation. They led the first
successful military coup which
eliminated the Military and
Political leaders of other regions
while letting off Igbo leaders.
Nwafor Orizu, then Senate
President, in consultation with
President Azikiwe, subverted the
constitution and handed over
power to Aguiyi-Ironsi.
Subsequent developments,
including attempts at
humiliating other peoples, led to
the counter-coup and later the
civil war. The Igbos themselves
must acknowledge that they
have a large part of the blame
for shattering the unity of this

The Northern Bourgeoisie and
the Yoruba Bourgeoisie have
conspired to keep the Igbo out
of the scheme of things. In the
recent transition when the Igbo

Now, with this government, the

Politics › Yorubas Are The Problem With Nigeria - By Sanusi Lamido Sanusi by Shegman22(op): 10:29am On May 07, 2015
In sum, the Yoruba political
leadership, as mentioned by
Balarabe Musa, has shown itself
over the years to be incapable of
rising above narrow tribal
interests and reciprocating
goodwill from other sections of
the country by treating other
groups with respect. Practically
every crisis in Nigeria since
independence has its roots in
this attitude.
The Yoruba elite and
area-boy politics;
Igbo marginalisation and
the responsible limits of
retribution; and
The Yoruba Factor and
"Area-boy" Politics.
My views on the Yoruba
political leadership have been
thoroughly articulated in some
of my writings, prime among
which was " Afenifere: Syllabus
of Errors" published by This Day
(The Sunday Newspaper) on
Sept 27, 1998. There was also an
earlier publication in the weekly
Trust entitled " The Igbo, the
Yoruba and History" (Aug. 21,
1998).
In sum, the Yoruba political
leadership, as mentioned by
Balarabe Musa, has shown itself
over the years to be incapable of
rising above narrow tribal
interests and reciprocating
goodwill from other sections of
the country by treating other
groups with respect. Practically
every crisis in Nigeria since
independence has its roots in
this attitude.
The Yoruba elite were the first,
in 1962, to attempt a violent
overthrow of an elected
government in this country. In
1966, it was the violence in the
West which provided an avenue
for the putsch of 15th January.
After Chief Awolowo lost to
Shagari in 1983 elections, it was
the discontent and bad publicity
in the South-West which led to
the Buhari intervention.
When Buhari jailed UPN
governors like Ige and
Onabanjo, the South-Western
press castigated that good
government and provided the
right mood for IBB to take over
power. As soon as IBB cleared
UPN governors of charges
against them in a politically
motivated retrial, he became the
darling of the South-West.
When IBB annulled the
primaries in which Adamu
Ciroma and Shehu Yar Adua
emerged as presidential
candidates in the NRC and SDP,
he was hailed by the South-
West. When the same man
annulled the June 12, 1993
elections in which Abiola was
the front-runner, the South-
West now became defenders of
democracy.
When it seemed Sani Abacha
was sympathetic to Abiola, the
South-West supported his take-
over. He was in fact invited by a
prominent NADECO member to
take over in a published letter
shortly before the event. Even
though Abiola had won the
elections in the North, the North
was blamed for its annulment.
When Abdulsalam Abubakar
started his transition, the
Yoruba political leadership
through NADECO presented a
memorandum on a Government
of National Unity that showed
complete disrespect for the
intelligence and liberties of
other Nigerians.
Subsequently, they formed a
tribal party which failed to meet
minimum requirements for
registration, but was registered
all the same to avoid the
violence that was bound to
follow non-registration, given
the area-boy mentality of South-
West politicians. Having rejected
an Obasanjo candidacy and
challenged the election as a
fraud in court, we now find a
leading member of the AD in the
government, a daughter of an
Afenifere leader as Minister of
State, and Awolowo´s daughter
as Ambassador, all appointed by
a man who won the election
through fraud.
Meanwhile, nothing has been
negotiated for the children of
Abiola, the focus of Yoruba
political activity. In return for
these favours, the AD solidly
voted for Evan Enwerem as
Senate President. This is a man
who participated in the two-
million- man March for Abacha
´s self-succession. He also is
reputed to have hosted a
meeting of governors during
IBB´s transition, demanding
that June 12 elections should
never be de-annulled and
threatening that the East would
go to war if this was done.
When Ibrahim Salisu Buhari
was accused of swearing to a
false affidavit, the Yoruba
political elite correctly took up
the gauntlet for his resignation.
When an AD governor, Bola
Tinubu, swears to a false
affidavit that he attended an Ivy
League University which he did
not attend, we hear excuses.
For so many years, the Yoruba
have inundated this country
with stories of being
marginalised and of a civil
service dominated by
northerners through quota
system. The Federal Character
Commission has recently
released a report which shows
that the South-West accounts for
27.8% of civil servants in the
range GL08 to GL14 and a full
29.5% of GL 15 and above. One
zone out of six zones controls a
full 30% of the civil service
leaving the other five zones to
share the remaining 70%. We
find the same story in the
economy, in academia, in
parastatals.
Yet in spite of being so
dominant, the Yoruba
complained and complained of
marginalization. Of recent, in
recognition of the trauma which
hit the South-West after June 12,
the rest of the country forced
everyone out of the race to
ensure that a South-Westerner
emerged, often against the best
advice of political activists.
Instead of leading a path of
reconciliation and strong
appreciation, the Yoruba have
embarked on short-sighted
triumphalism, threatening other
"nationalities" that they ( who
after all lost the election) will
protect Obasanjo ( who was
forced on them). No less a
person than Bola Ige has made
such utterances.
To further show that they were
in charge, they led a cult into
the Hausa area of Sagamu,
murdered a Hausa woman and
nothing happened. In the
violence that followed, they
killed several Hausa residents,
with Yoruba leaders like Segun
Osoba, reminding Nigerians of
the need to respect the culture
of their host communities. This
would have continued were it
not for the people of Kano who
showed that they could also
create their own Oro who would
only be appeased through the
shedding of innocent Yoruba
blood.
I say all this, to support
Balarabe Musa´s statement, that
the greatest problem to nation-
building in Nigeria are the
Yoruba Bourgeoisie. I say this
also to underscore my point that
until they change this attitude,
no conference can solve the
problems of Nigeria. We cannot
move forward if the leadership
of one of the largest ethnic
groups continues to operate, not
like statesmen, but like common
area boys.
iii.The Igbo Factor and the
Reasonable Limits of
Retribution.
The Igbo people of Nigeria have
made a mark in the history of
this nation. They led the first
successful military coup which
eliminated the Military and
Political leaders of other regions
while letting off Igbo leaders.
Nwafor Orizu, then Senate
President, in consultation with
President Azikiwe, subverted the
constitution and handed over
power to Aguiyi-Ironsi.
Subsequent developments,
including attempts at
humiliating other peoples, led to
the counter-coup and later the
civil war. The Igbos themselves
must acknowledge that they
have a large part of the blame
for shattering the unity of this
country.
Having said that, this nation
must realise that Igbos have
more than paid for their
foolishness. They have been
defeated in war, rendered
paupers by monetary policy fiat,
their properties declared
abandoned and confiscated,
kept out of strategic public

Politics › Re: Federal Govt Is Owing No State Govt. - Dr Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala. by Shegman22(op): 10:15am On May 07, 2015
Shegman22:
"I am making this clarification, that federal workers are not
being owed a dime. Any state Government still owing its
workers till this time must take responsibility for its
failings".
******************************************
All Federal allocation to state have been paid to date and it
is now confirmed that there is a no reason for states to be
owing their workers months of salaries sin arrears and
turning round to blame the Federal government.
We are waiting for those state governments that used their
state workers wages and salaries for election campaign and
their propaganda media to explain to Nigerians why our
workers are still going to work on empty stomach? http://www.hopefornigeriaonline.com/onfacebook
The Federal Government on Wednesday absolved itself of
blame in the inability of some state governments to pay
their workers’ salaries.
It said the governors of such states should be blamed for
the development in their states because they were told
through the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee to
make the issue of wage a priority.
The Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said this
in a statement by her Special Adviser on Communications,
Paul Nwabuikwu.
The statement was necessitated by the All Progressives
Congress governors’ claim that the negative manner the
outgoing Goodluck Jonathan administration was running
the economy had made it difficult for them to pay salaries
regularly.
But Okonjo-Iweala said that despite the 50 per cent drop in
gross federally collectible revenue, the Federal Government
had made the issue of workers’ salaries a top priority in
order to ensure that the “people do not feel the negative
impact of the revenue drop on the economy.”
For instance, the minister said that contrary to the
“misinformation being put forward by certain governors to
the effect that federal workers are being owed, staff
salaries at the Federal level are up-to-date.”
She said in the five paragraph statement that the states,
being one of the three tiers of government that receive
monthly allocations from the Federation Account, should be
blamed for their predicament.
The statement read, “This is to clarify the misinformation
put forward by certain governors to the effect that Federal
workers are being owed salaries.
“This is incorrect. Staff salaries at the Federal level are up-
to-date; workers have received their April salaries.
“Regarding difficulties in salary payments, certain
governors are trying to blame the Federal Government for
their predicament. This is wrong. They had been told
through the FAAC to prioritise salaries but they chose not to
do so, hence the backlog that some states are experiencing.
“The 50 per cent drop in revenues simply means that
salaries should be prioritised. The Federal Government
should not be blamed for avoidable mistakes made at the
state level.”
The APC governors had during a meeting with the
President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari, in Abuja on Tuesday,
expressed frustrations about their inability to pay workers’
salaries.
They therefore appealed to Buhari to consider a bailout plan
for all the 36 state governments after his inauguration on
May 29.
They said, “One of the issues that became of concern to all
of us is the state of the Nigerian economy which is really in
a bad shape.
“We have come to notify the incoming president of the
challenges ahead of him. As it stands today, most states of
the federation have not been able to pay salaries and even
the Federal Government has not paid April salaries and that
is very worrisome, by May and June, that (salaries) will be
in cumulative of three months.
“We wonder with the huge expectation of Nigerians and
people who have voted us into power, we are hoping that
the president-elect will do everything humanly possible to
bring about a bailout not only for the states but the Federal
Government, at least for people to get their salaries and
turn around the economy.”
The Nigeria Labour Congress had on April 28, insisted that
state governors must pay outstanding salaries before the
May 29 handover date.
The factional Deputy President of the NLC, Peters
Adeyemi, said at the ninth National Delegates conference
of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria in
Abuja, that workers had commenced the campaign to
prevail on the governors to pay outstanding salaries before
May 29.
The National Administrative Council of the NLC had on
March 19, 2015 set up a committee to compel state
governments to pay over eight months salary arrears owed
workers.
The congress had on December 31, 2014 said that 11
states owed workers salaries.
Adeyemi said that workers should not be made to bear the
brunt of the mismanagement of the economy as they were
not part of those who looted the treasury. http://www.punchng.com/news/govs-should-be-blamed-for-unpaid-salaries-okonjo-iweala/

Sports › Few More Chelsea Players Who Should've Been In The PFA Team Of The Year by Shegman22(op): 9:05am On Apr 28, 2015
According to the Guardian, Jose Mourinho has been quoted
saying the PFA Team of the Year should have been entirely
comprised of Chelsea players.
He was quoted saying, "But, just as an example, the season
Fàbregas is doing, the number of assists and quality of his
game, not to be there is a bit strange." I believe that Jose is
onto something. While it is impossible in my opinion to
have an entire Chelsea team as the PFA team, I would have
added a few more Blues to that team.
First and foremost, Jose Mourinho is right in saying that it
is strange to not see Cesc Fabregas in the Team of the
Year. This is simply because the Spaniard has been one of
the main components to Chelsea's title-winning engine this
season.
The 27-year-old has contributed 16 assists this season,
along with being one of the most consistent players in the
league. Fabregas leads the league in assists, as well as
forming the perfect partner for Nemanja Matic in Chelsea's
midfield pivot. His performances for Chelsea this season
has been one of the major differences this season for the
Blues.
Especially considering Coutinho, while having a good
season, has only contributed to a Liverpool team that will
most likely not qualify for the Champions League.
Furthermore, Coutinho only has 4 assists in the Premier
League this season. Fabregas to me, seemed the much
better choice.
Another surprise exclusion from the team, is Chelsea left-
back, Cesar Azpilicueta. The Spaniard has been sensational
this season, keeping Chelsea's shiny new left-back Filipe
Luis out of the team.
He has been by far the best left back in the league, and
quite possibly the best 1-on-1 defender as well. His
replacement Ryan Bertrand, is ironically a former Chelsea
backup. The young Englishman was unable to displace
Ashley Cole from the lineup and was relinquished to the
bench.
Cole couldn't be replaced, that is until Azpilicueta came
along. Oh and by the way, he's playing out of position,
which makes him that much more impressive. Although
Bertrand is surely on the rise, there is no competing with
Chelsea's current left back, Cesar Azpilicueta.

Politics › Court Halts Impeachment Move Against Fayose by Shegman22(op): 8:20pm On Apr 23, 2015
A Federal High Court in Abuja today, set aside all actions and activities of the embattled Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin and the All Progressives Congress (APC) lawmakers from November 21, 2014 till date, including the purported commencement of impeachment proceeding and notice alleging misconduct against the Stare Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose and his Deputy, Dr Olusola Eleka.

Justice E. Chukwu gave the ruling on an Exparte Application in Suit Number FHC/ABJ/CS/361/15 filed by the factional Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Dele Olugbemi and six other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmakers.

The judge also granted plaintiffs in the suit leave to serve the originating summons on the defendants through newspaper advertisements.

Olugbemi and six others had filed the suit, seeking an order of the court declaring the seats 19 lawmakers vacant having abdicated their functions since November 21, 2014 and also an order restraining the police from aiding, abetting or assisting the lawmakers from carrying out any illegal act.

Apart from Omirin and the APC legislators, also joined as defendants in the suit are the Inspector General of Police and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Hearing of the Motion on Notice has been adjourned till May 13
