I come from a good and well-educated family. I also attended great schools in Nigeria, but more importantly, while I understood our native language, from hearing relatives speak it, I have never spoken it. My parents never spoke it to us at any point. So I have only spoken English, since I was born. When I became a teenager, I also spoke pidgin English with my friends most times, but that had much less of an impact on speech.

I'm happy I understand my native language, and can probably have a conversation in it, if I had to. However, since I never spoke it, it never influenced my speech patterns. When you have a somewhat neutral speaking voice, or the kind of voice some kids in Nigeria used to tell me "why you de speak phonneh," the transition to an American accent is seamless.

Especially when you already grew up fully understanding the nuances of American English, through cartoons, movies and music. No speech pathology needed. It's a natural process, over a long period of time in America. However, the necessary foundation has to be there, to begin with.

If only the green passport had any use. I only carry it, in case I need to go somewhere in West Africa. It recently expired, and I called the Nigerian consulate here in Buenos Aires, to ask if I could renew. They said I had to go to Brazil to renew it. Typical Naija operation.

I don't really need it for now, so it's all good.

OP there's no limit to the number of times you will be blessed for this masterful observation some of us old folks have always talked about. Even the African Americans suffer exactly what you just said. You see the Blackman does everything possible to avoid deep contemplation hence the resort to fanfare, jolly etc. Even in America you hardly find African Americans in tech, all they blab about is race issues, entertainment, this, that, nothing concrete, and the white people keep looking at them. There's this very sensible black girl called Candace Owens who has railed and railed about these issues but the black folks can't even tolerate her.

They sure can. With the rate of denials back then, simple instructions to Nigerian banks to stop receiving payments for US Visa applications will bring them to the table for talks.

At a time people started lamenting that there were unjustifiable denials and applying was like throwing money down the drain. One of my mentees got a fully funded scholarship to study for an IT masters with a graduate assistant position. Dem deny this guy during that Trump era.

A journalist complained Bubu responded he cared less that and that they have no business outside in the first place. Sometime after, they started working on a bill to prevent younger people from leaving the shores.

All these actions are closely monitored by them to gauge how far they can get away with stuff.

Don't mind them. Many folks do not know how to answer interview questions and fail woefully. I questioned 3 people that got denied and told them that from their responses to their visa officer,there was no way he could grant them the visa

I know at least four people who got US visas with a Virginia passport.

Nevertheless during the Trump administration there was deliberate denial of applications to discourage immigration with the full consent of bubu.

By diversification, you relax or outlaw some of the draconian laws in the society so that sectors that will deal with foreigners can thrive, employ people and pay taxes.

That is the reason the UAE, specifically Dubai diversified quickly and today, the rest of the region is emulating her and to do this, they have to relax Islamic laws. Islamic laws cannot feed or pay taxes to fund social services or provide jobs. Should oil cease, only the UAE can thrive afterwards, the rest will have serious economic problems.

Generally, countries that enact religious laws tend to be poorer and backward in human development indices. A contrast to Indonesia is Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Those countries are richer, stable, functioning and more prosperous than Indonesia. You don't see Singaporeans working as maids in Saudi Arabia, and even semi-skilled Vietnamese who work outside the country are very choosy and opt to work in Singapore or Japan.

Religious laws do more harm than good to society.

@Topic: If not for the Chinese and Indian population, Malaysia would have done the same thing. Singapore was lucky she was pushed out of the union. Not all religions foster human development.

My post wasn't to compare Malaysia with South Korea or any other Asian Tigers. South Korea is an overkill. We are not even at the level of the respect Malaysia commands in the world let alone South Korea. Lol.

A Malaysian passport can get you to the UK, Japan, EU e.t.c visa free. Life expectancy in Malaysia is 76 compared to Nigeria's 55. I don't even think any African country has a GDP per capita that higher than that of Malaysia.

Life of a black man. I believe that if Nigeria (the most populous black country in the world) rises up to the level of maybe South Korea or Malaysia, black people all over the world would atleast earn some respect in this world that we have found ourselves in.

I wrote about local businesses and the idea that someone running a successful business in Nigeria is a local champion.

My argument is local businesses are the backbone of any economies.

And Also not all businesses are interested in expanding abroad.
