Here is my Interview transcript with the Consular Officer (CO) on 31/12/2018

CO: Good morning
Me: Good morning

CO: Your passport please
Me: Hands over the passport

CO: Why are you traveling?
Me: Going for my PhD at bla bla university

CO: Let me have your I-20
Me: Here it is (handing over the form)

CO: (Checks form and types) Sorry what major is this for?
Me: Mech*********

CO: Checks form I-20 again and says ok. How did you hear about this school?
Me: I first came across the school on the day I took my GRE test. I was trying to send my score to a particular school that is very popular in the state, but the schools name won't come up only this school coming up

CO: (CUTS IN) So you applied to this school because you couldn't find the school you wanted to apply to on GRE?
Me: (continued) No, I then went on to do more research on the school and discovered that they have a very solid program in my intended field of study. And this convinced me to apply in the long run

CO: Most students going for PhD study get some form of funding but you don't have
Me: The university is not funding me now because I am starting during the Spring semester when there is usually shortage of funding. But I have spoken with many faculty members who have promised to fund me starting from the Fall term.

CO: I can't see that here (looking at the I-20)
Me: (In my mind, this one dey craze, I-20 be promisory note?)

CO: How many school did you apply to?
Me: 3.

CO: Which schools and how many admitted you?
Me: Named them, A declined me, B put me on waitlist

CO: Why don't you wait for decision from B?
Me: I want to rap up my program as fast as possible and willing to pay before I get funding ...

CO: Who is your sponsor?
Me: My aunts

CO: Your aunt what does she do?
Me Aunts, they are two. I told her what they do and was trying to bring out account statements and Fixed deposit certificate

CO: Ok two of them, (she gave one kind of smile) keep your documents, sir
Me: Yes

VO: What would you say is your occupation now?
Me: (Trying to explain) I just started a firm and I have the registration certificate here.

CO: Don't worry. Please sir keep your documents.
Me: Packed all my documents together and maintained my calm.

VO: What do you do in your firm?
Me: XXXXXXX, XXXXXX, XXXXX

CO: So what is your occupation now?
Me: (I filled in Research as primary occupation on my DS160) Well, I was a researcher, But NOW I would say I'm a xxxxxxx (what I majorly do in my firm now)

CO: How much do you earn monthly?
Me: (This is where I think I messed up it a bit, I went to undersell myself. I was earning well over N1m as a researcher in Europe before deciding to come home and fully start my firm after securing an admission. My plan is to get it running and it can keep running while I am away in the US. Revenue should start flowing in only between January and March 2019) I was working as a reseacher in XXXXX University (Europe) before and I was earning...

CO: (Cuts in) Sir, how much IS your monthly income NOW? I am not checking your documents
Me: I said about N300,000 (this is where messed up here, I should have said about N1 m. I discovered she was trying to guide me by saying I am not checking your documents, but it was too late) which I have placed myself on for about 4 months since I came back home.

CO: Are you married?
Me: No

CO: Do you have any kids?
Me: No

CO: Did you write any Test?
Me: Yes, I wrote GRE (3**), TOEFL (1**)
CO: Types for some moments. Sorry. Sir, I won't be issuing you a visa now, you aren't eligible for a non-immigrant visa at this time. (Hands over blue paper)
Me: (Very unexpected) I asked why is this so? This is weird.

VO: Sorry I can't go into details right now. Please go through the paper.
Me: This is strange. (Walks away) .

Notes
Rejection was based on Section 214(b), which is all about not showing strong tie to the home country. This is totally not true in my case because the CO was not allowing me to prove that I have a strong tie to Nigeria, possibly because she doesn't believe I have assets in Nigeria worth coming back for. I have over 1 acre of land in one location outside Lagos, about 2 Plots in a prime location in Lagos and some other valuable assets and investments that I can't jeopardize. I guess she thought I was going to get married in the US, she na white girl I never see for Europe?
Why hide the name of the school you intend to attend? Am astonished. Why hide vital information people could learn from and apply to same school and freely give out personal information like your salary in Europe, your current salary and all your assets that won't help anyone here.

In my opinion, this isn't how we do here but I guess it's non of my business

That's mainly her bias. She was willing to issue me a visa today but she said as a good PhD student, she expects me to get funding from the university as do most applicants. I told her that some faculty members have promised to fund my research starting from Fall semester, she then told me to wait until then or wait for the other university that has put me on admission waitlist. I told her I want to get done with my program as fast as possible and and willing to pay before getting funded by the department. She then asked for my sponsor and I told her my aunts (one has N75m+in fixed deposit plus 2.7m account balance, the other has 9 million on savings account closing balance.). She asked what they do and I told her, she gave one kind of smile (which revealed what she was thinking). She then asked how much I currently earn, which I told her something lower than what I actually make, because I have just started a firm which made me put myself on a lower salary than what I was actually earning when employed in a company It's about 1/4 of my last salary that I pay myself now, when production begins next year it will increase my income tremendously (she would not listen to explanations).
Then bla bla bla, Did you write any exam? I said yes, GRE and TOEFL and my good score. next was Sir, I won't be issuing your visa this time...
Dear friend,
All the gurus and my ogas in the house won't even advice you to do a non funded PHD program. I mean a PHD is like a paid job in the US.
The VO gave you a very sound advice, don't be in a haste to start a PhD without funding. The US isn't running away

Masters is a sprint but PhD is a marathon. I have heard stories of funded PhD graduate students that got frustrated of the program and dropped out not to talk of unfunded grad students.

Remember promises might fail. What will happen to you if you bank on the promised funding and it doesn't come? You go just run pass Terry G

This is my own personal opinion and not based on any statistics or proven record

Happy and prosperous 2019 ahead

NB: please share your interview transcript, you are a prospective PhD student so you will eventually get your visa

Hello, can someone help list out what SIMILARITIES BETWEEN TWO SCHOOLS one applied to entails? What are they looking out for? A comprehensive listing will do. Thank you.
In my opinion, I think the answer to this question should contain your program based similarities between the schools you applied to. The VO wants to see if your carefully selected and applied to schools with similar program or if you just randomly selected and applied to schools without particular criteria.

For example if you want to do your masters to improve your bioenviromental aspect of your career and you came with an i20 of school X because they have facilities that facilitates this, then it common sense to show tha all the schools you applied to also have this facilities and will improve you in this regard too.

Please don't start mentioning "all the schools are located in small towns", or "all the schools are cheap", or "all the schools have good international students base" and stuffs like this

Disclaimer: This is just my own personal opinion based on what I think should be right. Use your discretion and filter through

I hope this helps you though

Good day everyone. I have a bachelor degree in Accounting with some work experience. I would like to change my career path by going for another undergraduate program in computer science in the US. Would this be a problem at the embassy? Would the fact that I am almost 40 be a problem? Thank you all
Bachelor's degree at 40? hahaha, it would be hard o.

Just go for Master's degree in Information systems or computer information systems. You should look out for schools that does this programs under their business school so you can use your accounting degree to your advantage in terms of securing GA or other benefits.

Prepare to do prerequisites. You can't escape this. If you are lucky you won't do more than 5 requisite courses but am sure you will be bundled with at least 3 -4 of them since you have taken no programming courses or computer professional courses.

In my opinion, I will advice you to stay clear of starting a bachelor's degree in computer science. A masters degree in computer information systems in a business school will offer you a wider career option. Systems analysts, business analysts, data analyst/scientist, software developer, database administrator etc.

You won't be burdened with many programming courses in computer information systems and if you are so in love with programming, you can take online courses at lydia, udacity, udemy, etc.

Prepare and take the GRE to show you are serious because this field is for analytical minded people.

I hope this helps you.

Best regards

Please guy advice needed a friend went for F1 interview in Abuja on the 4th December got approved got the white paper. But he tracked online and till date it’s saying administrative processing. Any advice for him. As he plans to go back to Abuja and check if his passport is available for pick up. When he tracked it. It showing still with the consulate. Advice please thanks
Tell your "friend" (which we all know is you) to chill. His application is under administrative processing. Once "your friend" gets approved, his profile would change to approve. Afterwards he would get a mail and text from the embassy to come pick up his/her passport.

Going back to Abuja before receiving the mail and text won't bear any fruit. He should be patient.

Hey, how’s everyone doing. Noticed the issue of statement of account being verified is causing a lot of rancor. And some people think embassies now have the right to verify acct balance and what not. Like someone rightly pointed out, the only thing the embassy can confirm is if the statement originated from the bank I.e it’s genuiness as per the Acct no. Name, and other on the surface details. No one has authority to confirm ur balance and transaction history.

For those who got approved and later denied, it’s just fate. Pray harder and refire. All this conspiracy theory is funny. Fact is the figure for visa applicants have tripled, so anyone can be denied for any convenient reason.

And another thing, if I were a VO, and I settle down to read this thread, I can easily tell from the response I get if an applicant is from nairaland or not; and the truth of the matter is 99% of people on here do not have the means to get graduate degree in the US, I mean, with the way naija is, how many people can afford to spend $60k(which is even on a very cheap side). Those that can afford it belong to a very small circle and they don’t usually come on here asking obvious questions. At most they read in silence and go for their interview and kill it.
Preparation is important But like I said. PRAYER IS THE KEY! Before u ask me to what, let me answer ——> to a US VISA!!

Shalom!
In as much as you tried to make sense, you still made some inaccurate assumptions and quoted some unfounded statistics.

Who told you only people that can't afford US tuition come to nairaland to ask questions? I received one of the best academic advice and made one of the best academic decision of my life based on the advice BigFrancis21 gave me 15 months ago. And mind you the advice came after I asked a supposedly "obvious" question.

And which survey did you carry out before you concluded that 99% of peeps on nairaland do not have the means to get graduate degrees in the US? Do you know how many people on this thread have concluded their US graduate studies and how many peeps here are in school right now. The stat would shock you my friend.

How would a VO know if someone is from nairaland from a one, two or three minutes interview? Interview questions have a "generic" path the answers follow, so why you out here ostracizing people that come here to do research and prepare for their interview? You are not a VO sef, so no need to dwell on this point

Who told you everyone need $60k to get US graduate degree?? and you even called it on a very cheap side. WTF. And yes the US embassy can mail banks to verify at least the closing balance of an account statement. They have their customized mail address system and banks would respond to such mail.

Please let us verify the "facts" we post here as they have a huge impact on people's life. You would not know the effect it has, but it always have.

Warm regards

Presently, I'm looking for different schools that offer assistantship with tuition waiver and I've listed some out. I have a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics and I'll like to proceed into Master's in Computer related courses, like Computer science, computer and information technology, telecoms etc but they don't state in their website if a Bsc in Mathematics will be okay for admission into their Computer programs. Please, can anybody prob in this area of discipline, shed more light? Thanks to y'all
Computer science / IT courses in the US in now open to all students irrespective of academic background. Most schools want diverse perspectives in the classes this days and coupled with the increase in IT jobs they usually accept most applicants as much as their class could take. I myself had my bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering but am currently doing masters in Computer Information systems

The issue you would encounter is in funding/GA. Most GA you would receive before getting to campus would require you to tutor or assists the professors in one way or the other, and you might not be considered for such positions because you have not taken courses in computer science / IT.

Nevertheless, if you have funds to cover one session, you can go ahead and apply. You will surely get admitted for Computer science. You can even apply for computation based IT programs like maths & statistics, analytics etc. Some of this courses are now being done under Computer science.

I hope this helps you

Cheers

Good day House,

Visa Delayed at Abuja Embassy this morning by black american female VO.

ME: Good Morning
VO: Good Morning
VO: Have you travelled out of the country before?
ME: Yes. I have been to Dubai and Ghana
VO: Can I get your old passport?
ME: My old passport was stolen in 2016 and I have the police report and affidavit.

I applied to study a Masters in Accounting in PVAMU
VO: Why did you choose this school?
ME: The curriculum takes a multi disciplinary approach integrating finance and management to give me a broader perspectives on organisational issues and how to resolve them. The accredited by AACSB responsible for accreditation of business schools. This accreditation serves as the gold standard of business schools.

VO: Who is sponsoring you?
ME: My mum. She is an educationist and owns schools
VO: How many schools?
ME: 2 schools

VO: What do you plan to do on your return to your country?
ME: I plan to work with the big 4 accounting firms and thereafter set up my own accounting firm.

VO: You are not eligible. Bla bla... Gave me 214B
In my opinion, your response to "why did you choose this university" decided your fate. Your response was weak. Forget about accreditation, ranking when answering "why this school" and talk more about area of concentration, facilities, laboratories etc that your school of choice have that will help you succeed in your program and in your career afterwards.

Read successful interview transcript, prepare and refire again.

hi forum,

my interview is fast approaching and I have an important question.

does having 2 kids but not traveling with them counts as ties to home country. I am currently engaged but not married.

I also intend attending the interview with my kids.. please advise!

I will appreciate your inputs
Yea, your two kids is a nice home ties but I don't think they would allow your kids in the Consulate since it's not their interview. I know they allow parents to accompany under age kids for their interview, I don't know if the other way round is allowed.
You won't be asked if you are engaged. You would only be asked "do you have kids?" and "are you married"?.
In my opinion, you trying to answer "are you married?" with "No, but am engaged" would either be misinterpreted as a rehearsed scam or it would make you look desperate

Hello everyone,

I am a graduate student in the US. I have been in the US since August. I was single when I got the Visa, but I got married before leaving for the US. Now my husband wants to come visiting.

It is kind of complicated though because on my profile with the US, am still single and even my school is not aware am married. while I got the admission, I was single. Also note that my husband has no travel history.

We don't know if I can explain to the school and probably show them proof that we are married just to get f2. on the other hand I feel it's a bit strange because getting I-20 for him means he is dependant on me. I feel it's easier for a female to claim she is dependent on her husband.

or should he just apply for a visa B1 Visa.

please guys, need suggestions on how my husband and I can go about this.

And am still very much grateful for the assistance you all rendered in tutoring me for my successful interview in June.
Technically speaking it would be hard for him to get a F2 visa because like F1 visa, he won't be able to work. So a VO might doubt if a grown up, fully fledged man would sit idle for the entire duration of your program.
Secondly, he would be dependent on you. I don't know your funding capability or the amount you showed on your statement of account during your interview. You might be dependent on a sponsor, then you now want to carry a grown up man to be dependent on you or on a sponsor. The man in question would the sit idle for 2years.
My advice would be for him to try his luck with Visiting visa. He should not even bring you into the picture because your profile with the US embassy currently show "ummaried". He won't get the chance to explain how you guys got married within a few weeks/months of you getting your visa and you travelling out the country. The VO might see it as a well rehearsed scheme. This just sound the same as not being pregnant before visiting visa interview, then getting pregnant after interview and subsequently giving birth in the US. The VO always see it as you lied to them during your interview
It's just my opinion o.

Okay. Here it is...........
V.O: I can see you are going to UNCG for a masters in peace and conflict studies?
Me: Yes,i am.
V.O: Why UNCG
Me: the major things i looked out for when applying was a school that offers my course,an affordable state, and the school's reputation. UNCG offers my course and an area that best fits my interest (negotiations and mediation), and its also one of the most prestigious US state owned universities and the students to faculty ratio is 18.1,which for me is a very good academic standard. North carolina on its own is one of the most affordable states in the country, and the standard of living there is great. And so for me, UNCG ticked of all my boxes in those areas.
V.O: did you apply to other schools , and where you accepted by all?
Me: answered in the affirmative.
V.O: Who is your sponsor?
Me: my dad and my maternal uncle.
V.O: What do they do?
Me: (explained to her)
V.O: (asks for their statements). She goes through it, and points out the part where my mum transfered a lump sum to my dad 2 days before the statement was printed. She asked who it was, and i explained to her that it was my mum.
V.O: i will be holding on to your passport and financial documents for further validation. You will be contacted in 3days. ( No white slip, no blue slip or even the pink letter)
An hour later i checked my status, and it was REFUSED.
You were only asked one important question "Why UNCG" and you didn't really do justice to the question. You gave a lot of generic points that didn't help to explain why you chose UNCG among all the schools in North Carolina. I guess so many schools in NC are offering your course with negotiations and mediation concentration, there are other affordable states in the US, and there are other prestigious state owned schools. Faculty ratio is a generic response that the VO would have heard a million times and a great standard of living shouldn't really be a determining factor that influences a student to choose a school over several others. At least from a VO point of view.

Why this school is a very common question that is asked at the start of almost all interviews, but sadly applicants give a very generic answer to this question. Response to "Why this school" should focus more on stuffs this school has that would aid you in achieving you academic dream. You should give specific examples too and not just generic response

Visa interview is a very short interview and you would want to create a good impression with the response to your very first/second question.

In my opinion I think your response to the "why UNCG" marred your chances and all other questions were just asked for asking sake. Work on your response to this and refire. hopefully you will get your visa at the next attempt.
Hope this helps, Adios

V. O: how many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to just one school, CUW (ur view here please, I been wan say two to look serious)
V. O: Why
Me: I was actually impressed by my findings about the program hence the reason i applied and luckily I was admitted conditionally.

Me: please do, its alright

V. O..... Types and.........

Lol.. I'm working rigorously to cut down on the lengthy responses though... Na confidence man d build
As per God dey already.
Interview 01/11
First, No standardized test. You are going for an IT Msc degree with no standardized test. The VOs have seen lots of candidates and know what they are looking out for in students o. Don't go saying standardized test was not a requirement for Msc in IT

Your "why cwu" is too shallow and really lack specifics. You can do better on this

"What will this course do for you?" "A lot. IT will improve me technically, analytically and advance my computational prowess, making me more valuable in increasing demand of professionals with not just vocational but also technological skills in Nigeria. I'll be better equipped to work with high profile and multinational companies like eunisell, indorama etc while making plans to setup a technologically driven enterprise in the long run.
Brother, you need to tell the VO how this course will do all this for you. You need to talk with specifics. All this "improve you technically, analytically and advance your computational prowess, making you more valuable in increasing demand of professionals with not just vocational but also technological skills" would not cut it o. Talk with specific examples

Then you applied to only one school. People have gotten visa with only one school admission, but please don't go telling the VO that you were lucky to get a conditional admission. It would destroy your whole profile.

Finally, why are you switching from polymer engineering to IT. You should be prepared for that "hell" of a question

Lemme stop here as your interview is tomorrow to avoid killing your confidence but you really can do better than this

All this is just from my point of view o, I no be VO
and i don't have a say on the outcome of your interview.

I wish you Goodluck and get your visa

The response in this transcript is better than the first one, but you still have to work on "why st Cloud?"
1. Any school offering a program must have been certified by the American body in charge of that program, so that point is not huge enough to me
2. How does MBA courses help your future plans? I think you can give specific points on this
3. Point 3 is on point
4. Which of the courses in the program really align with your career goals. Try to mention them
5. ("Upon graduation, I have would be accorded the American Society of Engineering Management's certified associate engineering manager (CAEM) title on graduation"wink..really?? Don't go and shoot yourself with this point and make the VO
think you don't plan on returning to Nigeria o. You can get better point than this

Good to know you wrote GRE. Overall, your responses are on point. Fine tune your "Why St Cloud" and go get your visa.
Wish you Goodluck

Q: Why was your visa not approved the last time you were here

A: I guess I was unable to convince the V.O about my application, but I believe my coming here now, to an extent show how serious I am with my application.

Forget about the how serious you are with your application part. Use the being timid at the first interview strategy. That you were not able to convince the VO during your last interview because you were timid but you have worked on yourself and are better prepared now

Q: What change in your application

A: I have been able to gather more experience and be better prepared than I was the last time I came here.

Use the timid part again here

Q: What do you want to go and do in the USA

A: I want to go to the USA, to study M.S in Engineering Management at the St. Cloud State University Minnesota

Q: How many schools do you apply to and how many admit

A: 3 schools, 2 admit

4.       The opportunity to also take MBA classes in the Herberger Business school

5.       The affordability of the school

All this your response is so vague. Try to talk about specific laboratory equipments you will be exposed to at St Cloud university, talk about the unique knowledge you will be gaining from the program at St Cloud. Please try to use specific examples. U can go through my interview transcript on this question if you want an idea on how to answer this question

Q: What’s your study plan?

A: I would be doing 32 units of Management courses over the course of the duration of the program

Also incorporate the courses you will be taking both main courses and electives. Try to break your 32 units into units for main courses and units for elective.

Q: Duration of the Course

A: 36 months

This should be joined with your study plan. You might not be asked this seperately

Me: Good Morning
VO: Good Morning, Pass me your passport and i-20
ME: I did sharply
VO: why going to the US
Me: I am going to Cleveland Land State University for my BSC in Information Sysystem
VO: Why US?
Me: It's a known fact that a degree in the United State is well respected and highly ranked, therefore, I see a foundational degree in the US to be a very good decision.
VO: how did you get to know about the school?
ME: My Dad's friend who is an alumni of the school recommended it to me, and as a result of this. I went online to read more on the school curriculum, Standard, program offered and it's notable alumnus.
VO: How many Schools did you apply to?
ME: 4
VO: Name them
ME: Cleveland State University, Georgia State University, Washington and Lee University, Appalachian State University.
VO: How many admitted you?
ME: Cleveland State University, and Georgia State University.
VO: Why Cleveland State University for a business seeking degree and not top schools.
Me: Cleveland state University at the Monte Ahuja Campus is well equipped with appliances that would help me not to only gain theorical knowledge, but practical knowledge as well, thereby developing me Managarially, Financially, and Technically, which will prepare me with the best way to utilize the modern technology.
Secondly, the school is enriched with qualified professors who are always ready to render necessary assistance to students. In addition, the school is located downtown of Ohio city, which will give me the opportunity to learn in a very conducive environment.
VO: so, why Information Systems
ME: Considering the continuous shortage of individuals with the combination of business and technology skills needed to develop and manage the economic systems that provide competitive advantage in the global marketplace, and varieties of career opportunities information system offers, coupled with the knowledge which I already had during my apprenticeship, I am sure this program will enrich me with the necessary skills needed to excel, and provide solution to the economic situation of Nigeria, and and enhance my father's land Technologically.
VO: What will this degree do for you?
ME: This degree will develop me Managerially and Technically, which will make me more valuable in the labor market, when I return to Nigeria to work with some Telecommunication companies like MTN, GLO, Etisalat, and any other Technological business enterprise.
VO: Any Standardized Test?
ME: SAT and TOEFL
VO: When did you finish High School?
ME: 2015
VO: What have you been doing since then?
ME: After my high school, I went for an apprenticeship in Computer and hardware engineering, which was for 12 months, with six months serving period making 18 months. After this, I proceeded as an apprentice to gain knowledge on MS word, Software installation, Ethernet Connectivity and GSM architecture for total of 12 Months.
VO: Who's sponsoring you?
ME: My Uncle
VO: What does he do?
ME: He is a Professor in Telecommunication Science Department at Bleep University, and also own a Telecommunication Company.
VO: Why is he spending that huge amount on you?
Me: He's my guildian, who is always interested in my success, and am seen as an investment who will use my attained knowledge to promote his company enthusiastically.
VO: Can I have his bank Statement.
Me: Of course you can, here it is.
Vo: Glance through it and returned, said my visa is approved, and gave me a White paper

Guys please help me look into this transcript, don't be scared to abuse or correct anything.

Lemme try to help you the best way I can. Am currently doing a masters degree in Information systems at Cleveland state university and it would be wonderful to have a Nigerian too in the department

First, How did you hear about this school?
If you say your Dad's friend/alumni, it better be true. If they ask you for his name and you go blank. Remember they have a database and can run instant search. You are better off saying you knew about the school after doing online searches than for you to be caught lying.

Secondly, Why Cleveland State University for a business seeking degree and not top schools.
Remove your mind from the bolded. You are going for an IT degree and not really a business degree. Even though Cleveland state university houses this program under their business school, the other school I applied to housed the same program under their Library science faulty, Engineering Faculty, Computer Science faculty etc. I just get to have a MBA upon graduation though. grin lol
Nevertheless, you response to this question was too generic. Most schools in the US have good and quality professors. I guess the other schools you applied to would have good professors too. If you must talk about good professors then you would need to name one or two professors and highlight their achievements.
Also you said something about "well equipped with appliances that would help me not to only gain theorical knowledge, but practical knowledge as well". This is way too generic. Try to talk specific appliances/laboratory equipments like "access to new generation graphic processor units for brute force attack simulations, cloud computing infrastructures etc. Dude, Look for more examples.
Then try to remove the location of downtown Cleveland as a determinant for you choosing the schools. Downtown of a city might not be the most conducive environment for learning. You don't want to institute an element of doubt in the VO

Thirdly, your response to "Why Information systems and What this degree would do for you is not really top notch. To me both questions are similar and the same answer would suffice for both. Try to relate the answers to the knowledge you gained on your computer and hardware engineering apprenticeship. This is really your strongest point and it would be in your best interest to talk about it at every slight opportunity. Talk about how this degree would improve upon the knowledge you gained back then and also give you knew skill sets (you will talk about specific skill sets here too o). Then you can finish work with how you would return back to Nigeria to apply all this knowledge on big IT firms like Interswitch, google, Andela, Cisco etc.

You can also view my visa transcript incase you need further help

Do all this and I might be welcoming you with a big hug to Cleveland in January. You go just bring two paint of garri and egusi for me. You know as e dey be na. grin

Hello fellow nairalanders.

So I got the blue paper today at the Abuja embassy. Feels very sad, but I hope to try again. School resumes Oct. 22, 2018.
Despite the outcome, I really do thank y’all here, cos the extent to which I prepared was because of what I learned from you guys

Below is my transcript and please I will need your assessment. I don’t mind overly frank comments. My own na to learn, refire and get my visa approved

VO: Good morning.

Me: Good morning.

VO: passport and I20

(I passed it)

VO: So I see you’re going to Westcliff University in Irvine.

Me: that’s correct. Irvine California

VO: what program are you going there for?

Me: Master of Business Administration with a concentration in International Business

VO: So where did you first learn about this school.

Me: I first saw it on LinkedIn, on a former schoolmate’s profile, he did his MBA there. I then went further to do a personal online research on the school, including on the school’s website.

VO: so what kind of school is this (honestly this kicked me off balance, until this moment I thought I was very confident and fluent in my expressions, didn’t really understand what she meant. I sha answered that it’s a school that offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, they basically got only a faculty of Education and a college of Business. She cuts in and asks: “is it an online school or what?”)

Me: oh, that... they offer both online and hybrid options, but I chose the hybrid option as it is more involving and robust. There’s student mentoring and the cross cultural learning to gain. Besides Westcliff has an arrangement for hybrid students to have a few days internship experience at selected firms. (Nodding her head and typing seriously, and not smiling at all)

VO: what’s your schedule for this program?

Me: (this was where I feel my problem started). So classes are once in a week. (She cuts in and asks: “So what will you be doing on other days?” “Cos one problem with these hybrid programs and in your case where you go to school just once in a week, is that students end up working, and that’s illegal.” I sha told her, apart from classes with lecturers there are student discussion groups and engagement, “besides I don’t intend to go doing anything illegal, that’s something I have never done in my life”). We will be doing courses in Organization behavior, managerial accounting, financial management, marketing management, strategic management in globalized economy, managerial economics and of course my concentration- International business.

VO: when did you finish your first degree.

Me: 2011, although the session was officially 2009/2010, the semester dragged into the first quarter of 2011.

VO: So what have you been doing since you graduated.

Me: oh, so much. After my NYSC in 2012, I worked briefly as an intern producer with abc tv station. I then joined xyz bank as service quality officer in the loans department in 2014, later that year I moved to abc bank where I was a customer service officer and funds transfer officer. Since 2015 till date I have been with xyz bank as head abc unit in one of the branches where I’m responsible for xyz of the branch, supervise a team of xyz who are in charge of “this this this and that”

VO: So what will this degree do for you?

Me: (I feel I also messed up here, some how I failed to mention how this degree would enhance my growth with the bank or give opportunity for a specific role). Even though I have had this vast experience in banking operations for about 4 years, there still is that foundational gap, as my first degree was in the arts- English and Literature ( at this point she stopped looking at me, quickly typed and was staring at her monitor); so this program would help me with in-depth understanding of organizational capabilities needed for operations, especially in specialized functions as Finance, marketing and Human Resources. (I know I didn’t really do well here, somehow I didn’t say all I had prepared to say, and the way she was staring at me didn’t even help. Lol).

VO: who will be paying for this program?

Me: I have been able to save up over the course of... (she cuts in)

VO: Pointedly, tell me who’s paying (tapping her wrist), time, time.

Me: oh, I will be partly paying, my uncle takes care of other expenses. (Almost forgot to add) I also have a certain percentage of scholarship.

VO: can I have documents for that. ( handed her my statement, uncle’s and scholarship letter)

Me: (while she was going through the SOAs) my statement is a money market account statement, but I have a letter of introduction here from the bank stating that it could be liquidated at anytime.

VO: why would your uncle wanna pay for you?

Me: he’s my foster father, he’s been very much involved in my education, especially after my dad’s sight got inpaired, also I’m like the child he doesn’t have.

VO: what does he do?

Me: Primarily he owns a bureau de change and also imports and sells tiles.

She then types ooooooo, next thing na blue paper, stating that I have not proven strong home ties.

I need very candid advice here on what next to do. Sch resumes Oct. 22.

Also one guy got pink paper, he left frowning and very embittered. But what does the pink paper mean?
First, "What kind of school is this"?
A quick scan through of the school website revealed that the school has just two faculty; business and education faculties. The website even emphasized more on the "online (innovative virtual class sessions) and part time" schooling than on the hybrid session. The VO seemed to have a bad blood for hybrid programs. I won't be surprised if another VO you meet have the same bad blood too. The school website did not do much to help your case.

Second, "What's your schedule for this program"?
In my opinion, This was where you gave the fatal blow to your "slim" chances. Why did you go about saying what you were not asked. Why did you bring up the fact that you will only be having classes once a week? Just pray that the VO did not input this into your profile, else you will be dashing them 57600 over and over again if you keep going there with same school and program.
Next time "schedule for your program is "how many credit hours you will be taking, "the duration for your program", "how many semesters". Don't over sing your weakest point.
If you are the VO, would you believe that someone that have worked for over 4 years in the banking industry, heading different units, will go to school just once a week and sit idle for the remaining 6days of the week??
I think the outcome of your interview was decided at this point.

I am not an expert in visa matters, but in my opinion, I think you should give it another shot and hope for the best. If your best is not good enough, you might want to consider applying to another school that does not offer online MBA program. From what I've read here over the years, it's most time difficult to convince a VO that you want to spend a lot of money on something you can easily get online from the comfort of your home country.

I hope this helps you.

What about a case were your job description is not in line with your suppose course? How do one go about this?
If your job description is not in line with your intended course of study, then you shouldn't talk much about it. You should only talk about it if the VO asks you the question on "What have you been doing since". Even at that you should tune your response down a little bit. Don't go and over sing something that is not really relevant to your cause.
I hope their is something in your profile that is related to your intended course of study? Maybe your previous academic record, a voluntary service, etc. Something that shows progression/Continuity.
Am not an expert in this but sometimes it's hard to convince a VO if you are switching from field A to a completely unconnected field Y. You have to find a way to connect the dots.
I hope this helps you.
