Eyo is originally from Ogun state.

The indigenous masquerade of Aworis and Egun is Zangbeto or Sangbeto.

Egungun or Eegun is just a general name for Masquerades in Yoruba languages.

Eyo masquerades used to fight themselves in the past. The reason for the fight is usually hierarchy. For example Eyo Ologede and Eyo Oniko groups after the festival and are returning to their igas (shrines) and they happen to cross paths, the less superior one is supposed to drop its opan’bata (palm wood) and bow to the superior one, if this doesn’t happen, the more superior Eyo may try to enforce a bow from the less superior one which often times result in deadly fights where both groups may result in using arms and causing serious injuries to each other.

This story was narrated to me by my Mom and Aunts back when I was young. It happened in their teenage years when they were living in Isale Eko back in the 60s/70s.

Was it Abacha that annulled the elections? The person that annulled the election stepped down and put an interim government in place. Abacha came and overthrew the interim administration.

Most of you on Nairaland were not born then or you were babies. There was a little space of time between the annulment and before Abacha took over and people were pleading, some fighting, some hoping that democracy would be restored. IBB played all game against the rules including the interim Government. To accuse Tinubu of working to annual the June 12 election thereby working against his own political career because he should know that the milliary rule will be sustained by such action is pure sensationalism directed at those too young to witness or those TOO HATEFUL AND WILLING TO BUY ANY NEGATIVE NEWS ABOUT THE PRESIDENT. The annulment was June 26, 1993, Abacha came on board on 17 November 1993. Abiola declared himself president June 11 1994. He was arrested afterwards.

You all talk of “many of you were kids when this happened”. Those of you that were oldies spread rumors and unfounded information.

Stop being defensive. You are not the only that went to government school. Infact many of us did. I never said christians joined them at jumat prayers. I was referring to assemble period. The Fridays morning assembly belonged to the Muslims.

From Christians joined Muslims for Friday prayers to I was referring to assemble period.

I went to a unity school and on every assembly Both Christians and Muslims prayers are performed. Monday to Friday.

That’s a big fat lie. I went to a govt school, I taught for a short while a government school. Christian students don’t join the Muslims for Friday Jumah prayers or go to the mosque at anytime to join the prayers.
