The cardinal was the President of CAN for 8 years. What was he doing as CAN head when there is no church in the North that has C of O for their land? What did he do when El-Rufai revoked allocation of Catholic church in Central Area, Abuja for no just cause? What did he do when the government was using Nigeria resources to build National Mosque while Ecumerical Centre was lying waste? It took the effort of Rochas Okorocha and Obasanjo under Bishop Sunday Mbang as CAN president to build the National church, what was his role in the 8 years of CAN President? It took Sunday Mbang to stop lopsidedness in Pilgrim sponsorship in Nigeria, what role did he play? It is on record that no single church in Abuja has C of O for their church building until recently, what role did he play throughout his boastful good 8 years as CAN president?

The video journalist responsible for capturing the activities of Boko Haram sect was amongst those who were killed by Nigeria military force yesterday Friday, during a gun-battle with the sect. The video journalist who was believed to have shot several videos of past activities of sect including the video of the abducted Chibok girls was caught in a fierce battle while capturing yesterday battle on camera. Over 200 Boko Haram terrorist including a dreaded commander of the group named Amir were killed on Friday in Konduga near Maiduguri, Borno State, report says.

One Nigerian army officer said a feared commander known only as Amir was among the dead after a battle on Friday in Konduga town, 35 kilometres from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state and birthplace of the extremist group.
There were no military casualties, according to the officer and a civilian self-defence group that fights alongside the soldiers. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to speak to reporters.

Boko Haram has captured a string of towns in recent weeks stretching over 320 kilometres alongside Nigeria’s north-east border with Cameroon in a new campaign to create an Islamic caliphate, mimicking the Isis group in Syria and Iraq.

The extremists also have attacked a town and villages across the border in Cameroon, but that country’s state radio said Cameroonian troops beat them off and forced them back across the border into Nigeria.

The United States said last week it is about to launch a major border security program for Nigeria and its neighbours, but gave no details.

Thousands of civilians have been forced from their homes in the latest offensive, joining more than 1.5 million other Nigerians who are refugees within their country or across borders in Niger, Cameroon and Chad, according to UN figures.

Extremists who have taken other towns have told residents that their next target is Maiduguri, the headquarters of the military campaign in the north-east. Boko Haram has attacked the city several times, with suicide and car bombs that have killed scores. In December they launched a bold attack on an air force base on the outskirts in which they destroyed five aircraft and in February an assault on the main military barracks in the city, in which they freed hundreds of detainees.

The soldiers killed hundreds of unarmed detainees in the aftermath of that last attack, mostly civilians accused of belonging to or supporting the insurgency. Amnesty International put the number of civilians killed by the soldiers at nearly 700.

Nigeria’s military is accused of massive human rights abuses in the fight against the extremists, including the deaths of thousands of illegally detained people.

Ghana will seek just $1 billion from a Eurobond this year as it heads into talks with the IMF aimed at restoring fiscal balance as part of a larger plan of economic reform, President John Mahama said in an interview recently.

But what will $1 billion do for Ghana’s struggling economy which was previously described a model for West Africa because of its sustained high rates of economic growth on the back of exports of gold, oil and cocoa and its track record of stable democracy.
Oftentimes, analysts advertently or inadvertently avoid looking at the core reason for Ghana’s recent economic woe which can be attributed to its weak manufacturing sector. The feeble manufacturing sector account largely for the dwindling economic fortunes of Ghana, though may not entirely the root cause for the back and forth movement of the Ghanaian economy.

Following the discovering of oil in Ghana, the government rebased the currency, threw open its door for foreign goods. Indeed, in today’s Ghana, it is undeniably the case that almost every petty item being used/ consumed is imported with no significant corresponding exports. This has often resulted in an unfavorable trade relationship between Ghana and her trading partners with the accompanying balance of payments deficits. The overall impact of this is the recurrent depreciation of the local currency (Cedi) against the major foreign currencies (Dollar, Pound, Euro, CFA etc. ) in the global market, since the country often sends out more foreign currencies by importing more goods, but only brings in less foreign currencies by exporting less goods. Given the prevailing economic situation therefore, no matter the quantum of measures put in place by the Bank of Ghana or the Ministry of Finance or the number of zeroes that get knocked off again from the Cedi counting, the Cedi shall always return to its usual weak performing position in the midst of the major foreign currencies if Ghana’s economy remains heavily dependent on indiscriminate importation of goods from consumables to non-consumbles.


What then is the root cause of Ghana’s chronic economic woes over the years, one would ask? The answer is not far-fetched as it hugely lies in the unreliable supply of energy as opposed to non-intermittent supply of energy required to power the country’s industrial sector.

Most of the factories that were operational in the past were either collapsed completely or are being operated below their initial capacity obviously due to inadequacy of power supply. Undoubtedly, given the current population growth, the capacity of the Akosombo Dam has become insufficient to meet the current industrial, commercial, and domestic energy needs of Ghanaians. Even though several governments in the past have, in one way or the other, expressed or shown concern about the increasing demand for energy for both domestic and industrial purposes, little or nothing concretely had been done about it. The current energy generation capacity of Ghana’s electricity which is estimated around 2800 mw certainly cannot guarantee adequate supply to homes let alone fuel the manufacturing sector. A combination of climate change which has made homes warmer than before and improved standard of living of some Ghanaians have compelled them to convert their louvre-blade-fixed homes into all -glass homes fixed with multiple sophisticated air-conditioners thereby putting additional burden on the already burdened energy generation capacity.


The West African country may look for further financing if it can secure an assistance deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Ghana President John Mahama said, adding that former finance minister Kwesi Botchwey would lead talks due to start on Sept. 16.

Ghana said in August it would seek an IMF deal to tackle fiscal problems including inflation, a stubborn budget deficit and a currency that has tumbled around 40 percent this year.

But its recent fiscal troubles are a sign of an unbalanced economy. The problems have also complicated plans for a third Eurobond to fund infrastructure and repay debt from the country's first Eurobond in 2007, potentially raising the cost of borrowing and making the debt less attractive to investors.

Ghana's parliament has approved $1.5 billion of borrowing in this year's bond.

"We initially had looked to bring in $1 billion to support the budget and then probably another $500 million to retire the earlier (2007) bond. What we are looking at is to suspend retiring the earlier bond until next year," Mahama said.

Finance Minister Seth Terkper is in Europe this week leading a roadshow on that bond, which is set to be launched next week.

Mahama said he had no immediate plans to change his key economic team, though he had brought in a few new people to strengthen it. He spoke to Reuters at his office in Flagstaff House, which is the presidential palace.

The government hopes to reach agreement with the IMF by November on a potential programme, Deputy Finance Minister Mona Helen Quartey said in London on Friday.

Mahama stressed that the purpose of pursuing an IMF deal was not simply to dig the country out of a short term fiscal hole and the government didn't primarily want IMF cash.

Instead, it wanted to work with the IMF, the World Bank and the African Development Bank on an ambitious set of institutional reforms, programmes to alleviate poverty and programmes to spur job creation through the private sector.

"We are looking to work with the IMF, both to consolidate the fiscal but then also to carry out the kind of institutional reforms that would be necessary to sustain that macro-economic stability so that going forward, hopefully, this country will probably not go into an IMF program again," he said.

ELECTION CYCLE

Key to success will be whether the changes can be sustained beyond 2016, when Mahama's ruling National Democratic Congress faces an election.

"My eye is not on 2016. My eye is beyond 2016. This transformation agenda cannot be achieved in two years and so any actions and activities we'll start with regards to negotiations with the IMF will go beyond an election cycle," he said.

Mahama is a former vice president who came to power in 2012 on the death through illness of his predecessor John Atta Mills. He went on to win a four-year term that December, defeating Nana Akufo-Addo in a tight election.

The fiscal problems, which came to light in early 2013, stem from the implementation of a public sector pay policy.

The government has struggled to bring down the deficit, which stood at 10.2 percent in 2013. It cut utility and fuel subsidies and pursued what it called a "home grown" package of measures.

The government hoped to reduce inflation, which hit 15.3 percent in July, down to 11-12 percent by the end of the year, Mahama said, but he added that the plan had run into obstacles.

"We haven't been able to create the turn around as quickly as we had hoped because of scepticism in the international community," he said.

Where I have issue with this speech is Fashola should have be man enough to tell his Arab friend that he , Fashola has been governor of Lagos for about 8 years and he has borrowed nearly 1 trillion naira and has collected more than 2 trillion naira in revenue and that his budget performance has been well over 100%. He should have used his effort in Lagos as governor as a yardstick to proof that the Lagos he governs is now the Dubai of Nigeria.
