For nearly a month now, a harrowing humanitarian crisis has been unfolding in the Sudanese region of Darfur, marked by the rampant torture, systematic abuse, and widespread starvation of the region's indigenous black African Masalit tribal group at the hands of marauding Arab militias known as the Rapid Support Forces or RSF for short. Civilians, caught in the crossfire, endure unimaginable suffering as armed factions vie for control. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group has been accused of many atrocities in the capital Khartoum and the Darfur region since the country was engulfed by war earlier this year. Its fighters this week captured Wad Medani which had been a haven for half a million as nationwide conflict raged between the paramilitary group and the Sudanese army. The fall of the city of Wad Medani has now prompted another panicked exodus in a war which has already seen an estimated seven million black Africans, flee their homes. Mr Ibrahim, a lawyer, and his family were earlier this week among an estimated 300,000 who fled the city, many on foot, in the face of the advancing Arab paramilitaries. He told the Telegraph: “When the fighting started I decided to move out from Wad Medani, because the RSF has a bad reputation about raping girls, which has happened in Khartoum and Darfur.” The war erupted when rivalry between the de-facto president, Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and his deputy, Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, boiled over. Hemedti controls the RSF, which was formerly a state paramilitary group. Conservative estimates put the death toll at more than 10,000. With the health system collapsed, accurate figures are impossible to get and the true number is thought to be many times higher. The capture of Wad Medani over only a few days has shocked the country, after months of fighting in which neither side appeared able to make a breakthrough. Residents told the Telegraph the city had fallen with little fighting, leading to suspicion the garrison had made a deal to pull out. The army issued a statement saying it had withdrawn and was investigating what had happened. Dr Mohamed Jala Hashim, a lecturer and political analyst at Khartoum University, said: “When the RSF came inside the city of Wad Madani, no bullets were fired. Even the bridge had been closed to them, but they opened it and entered the city without resistance.” Widespread looting broke out in the city after it fell. The surprise fall of Wad Madani has raised questions about the army’s ability to hold back the RSF, and whether the collapse will lead to assaults on cities including Gedaref in the east and Kosti in the south. Every year, thousands of African migrants from East African countries like Kenya, Ethiopia Eritrea and Tanzania, find their way to the Middle East in search of better opportunities and jobs which are scarce at home. In recent years, Israel has become a favourite destination for African migrants who are attempting to enter through Israel's Southern border with Egypt. Gaza is also located along Egypt's border with Israel and this young Tanzanian man was picked up by Hamas fighters. I was wondering too because I know the Brazilian Rivellino who was Pele's teammate in that great Brazilian WC wining team of the 1970 WC in Mexico.
