NO fewer than an estimated 20,000 members of the Peoples Democratic Party in Zone A of Niger State have defected to the All Progressives Congress as the party’s governorship candidate in Niger State, Alhaji Abubakar Bello, rounds off his campaign tour of the area.
APC spokesman, Mr. Jonathan Vatsa, made this known in a statement in the Mokwa area of the zone on Monday.
Vatsa said the party was overwhelmed by the crowd of defectors from the PDP from various wards in the area.
He said the people of the area had complained bitterly to the APC standard bearer over the years of neglect by the PDP administrations in the state, adding that “the people said they were tired of 16 years of deceit.”
He described the popularity of APC in the area and the entire state in general as “the broom revolution,” claiming that the PDP was now a shadow of itself in the zone.
Vatsa explained that while APC had carried its campaigns to the nooks and crannies of the state in view of its popularity, the PDP had stopped its campaigns at local government headquarters because the people had discovered what he described as the bulk of failed promises over the years.
Counting the gains of the APC in zone A, the spokesman said over 5,000 defectors from the PDP in Edati, 5,000 in Mokwa and another 3,000 in Kutigi joined the APC in the area.
“When we took stock of the PDP members coming to join us in each local government that constitute zone A; we realised that we got 3,000 in Lapai, 3,000 in Agaie, 4,000 in Katcha , 3,700 in Bida which has been our stronghold. The remaining ones in the PDP in Bida have now joined us,” he said.
He however distanced APC from attacks on PDP campaign train in parts of the state, explaining that those who attacked PDP were its aggrieved members.
“We preach peace wherever we go,” Vatsa added.”

Both former governors Rashidi Ladoja and Adebayo Alao-Akala of Oyo State, who are both contesting the governorship election under Accord Party (AP) and Labour Party (LP) respectively, were conspicuously absent at the maiden edition of ‘The Big Debate’ organised by the Radio Nigeria, Ibadan.
The debate was organised for all the governorship candidates in the state to discuss their programmes for the people of the state.
But the two of candidates stayed away, although with an excuse from Ladoja that he could not come because of earlier information he got somewhere that most of the contestants would send representatives while Akala simply sent apology for not coming.
However, no fewer than six other governorship candidates, Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Seyi Makinde of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Teslim Kolawole Folarin of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olaide Olayiwola of KOWA party, Samson Olalere of All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and Taiwo Otegbeye of Action Alliance (AA) participated in the debate.
During the debate, Folarin, Olayiwola, Ajimobi and Olalere supported the introduction of the state police, which was opposed by Makinde on the ground that as laudable and desirable as it is, the level of the politicians’ intolerance negate its desirability.
All the candidates agreed on the implementation of free education if elected, but, they all, except Ajimobi, faulted the current system said to be non-result oriented in view of the mass failure in public examinations.
Makinde, who hinged his programme on poverty eradication, insisted on free education, saying having benefited from a similar programme in the past, he believed only through education could he achieve his mission.
Recalling his experience as a child reared by parents of little means, Makinde said: “I was not born by rich parents, but the only thing given to me by my parents was education and that has propelled me to the level I am today by the grace of God, out of which I’m now offering myself to give back to the society”

On his part, Mr. Bobboi of the Kowa Party, said the power situation in the country had not changed from what it was 13 years ago contrary to Mr. Sambo’s claim.
He said if elected Kowa Party would build additional refineries in the six geo-political zones.
“That will reduce the number of pipes and it will reduce the vandalisation of pipelines,” he said.
Apparently referring to the controversial election of the Nigeria Governors Forum, NGF, and the removal of the leadership of the Ekiti House of Assembly, Mr. Bobboi taunted the PDP government not adhering to the rule of law.
“Leadership problem is a very critical issue. Leadership should be seen as servant of the people and not a ruler of the people. We require purposeful leadership that can work with the people, not centralized leadership, not leadership that is incoherent, but one that should adhere to the rule of law, not leadership that says 16 is higher than 19 or seven higher than 19,” he said.
“Kowa believes that leadership should be focussed, responsible and allow the people to participate.”
Mr. Bobboi, whose party’s presidential candidate is a woman, Oluremi Sonaiya, said there was a need for a paradigm shift from “paternal system of leadership to maternal system of leadership.”

Vice President Namadi Sambo said on Sunday that nearly N200 billion has been saved by the Federal Government following the discovery of about 60,000 ghost workers in its employ.
He disclosed this while responding to questions on corruption during the debate organised for the vice presidential candidates of the 14 political parties ahead of the February 14 election.
The debate, which was boycotted by the vice presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Yemi Osinbajo, was organised in Abuja by the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria, BON.
Mr. Sambo, who is the vice presidential candidate of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was paired with Bello Umar of the United Progressives Party, UPP, and Seidu Bobboi of the Kowa Party.
Stating that corruption was not an event, the vice president said it had however become a cancer in Nigeria and to treat a cancer would involve a lot of things.
He noted that before the civil war, there was no armed robbery in the country but that despite the killing of robbers by firing squad, the menace did not abate.
Mr. Sambo said the Jonathan administration had been able to put in place measures to stem corruption particularly in the civil service, among which is the e-payment and the strengthening of government institution.
According to him, this approach had yielded result as over 60,000 ghost workers had been discovered and nearly N200 billion had been saved.
He also said the government had stemmed corruption in the agricultural sector with the reform it introduced in fertilizer distribution.
The vice president said the PDP had transformed Nigeria since 1999, particularly in the last four years that Mr. Jonathan had been in power.
“Our party has successfully changed Nigeria in the last four years under the leadership of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. We have been able to transform this country by having a leading economy in Africa,” he added.
He stated that when the current administration assumed office in 2011, the country was generating only about 2,000 megawatts but that it had now risen to about 4,500 megawatts.
“When we came in as an administration four years ago, power generation in this country was only about 2000 megawatts but today we are generating 4,500 megawatts and this will continue,” he said.
“There is no doubt that people are already reaping the effect of this additional power generation in Nigeria. As I speak we have added 10 new power plants in Nigeria and 100 percent has already been completed.
“We have constructed 3,500 kilometers of transmission lines and also 295 injected substations completed. So by that we have added 4700 megawatts to the existing infrastructure that will come. We have taken the right direction on power. We are building hydro power plants. People are feeling the positive change of this transformation.”
He said contrary to reports, only about 100,000 barrels of crude are being stolen in Nigeria, but that government had taken various steps to ameliorate the problem by liaising with the foreign refineries that buy the stolen crude.
Mr. Sambo said the government had begun the process to reform the Land Reform Use Act. According to him, a Committee headed by Peter Adeniyi had already completed a report and presented to the National Economic Council, NEC, which he chairs.
He said the report had been reviewed while inputs from the state governments were being awaited.
On the security challenge in the North East zone of the country, Mr. Sambo said the government “will do everything to ensure that we arrest this problem; we are strengthening the security arms and we are ensuring that our military personnel are properly kitted and equipped.”
Stating that the government was taking necessary actions to ensure that those affected by the insurgent activities were taken care of, the vice president said already 12 local governments hitherto under the control of the insurgents in Adamawa State had been recovered.
Mr. Sambo pleaded with Nigerians to vote the PDP in the election because of the wealth of experience he and Mr. Jonathan had brought to governance.
Mr. Umar said if elected, the UPP government would focus on solving the security problem confronting the country. He said the party already designed policies to achieve this.
He disagreed with Mr. Sambo on the economy and insisted that “the economy of the country is in the state of collapse.”
He also faulted the vice president on the state of power generation in the country, saying the government was not doing enough.
Mr. Umar said the UPP government would “go to nuclear to generate energy in order to put an end to power problem in Nigeria.”
The UPP vice presidential candidate said his party’s government would initiate land reform, strengthen technical and vocational education, set up a committee to advise it on the industrialisation of the country and give anti-graft agencies free hand to fight corruption.

The Jamaatul Nasril Islam, led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Abubakar Sa’ad III, has asked the General Overseer of the Living Faith World Outreach Ministries, also known as Winners’ Chapel, Bishop David Oyedepo, to stop heating up the polity ahead of the general elections in the country.

Also, the group cautioned Niger Delta ex-militants like the leader of the Niger Delta Peoples Volunteer Force, Asari Dokubo, Victor Ben Ebikabowei(Boy Loaf), Government Ekpudomenowei(Tompolo) and other militants in the same manner.

JNI’s Secretary-General, Dr Abubakar Aliyu-Khalid, at a press conference in Kaduna on Sunday, said rather than fanning the ember of war, Oyedepo and his likes, should preach peace ahead the general elections.

Acknowledging that elections, the world over, are usually associated with anxieties, uncertainty and tension, Aliyu-Khalid, said there was the need for Nigerians to refrain from making inflammatory statements that could jeopardise the polls.

According to him, the forthcoming presidential election was the most keenly contested in Nigeria history, noting that even at that, there was the absolute need for all Nigerians, regardless of religion or tribe to shun violence before, during and after the elections.

The JNI scribe urged all the contestants to accept the outcome of the elections, saying in every election, there must be winners and losers.

He therefore urged the two major political parties, the Peoples Democratic Party and the main opposition All Progressives Congress, to abide by the Abuja accord.

He said, “While all these situations keep growing by each day that come to pass, the political atmosphere increasingly gets charged. With clashes between rival political supporters and thugs occurring at one place or the other, a state of fear of drifting to wide-spread violence as witnessed in 2011, is already setting in.

“For instance, Bishop Oyedepo of Winners Chapel at Ota, was reported to have made a lot of inciting hate speech recently. Tompolo and Asari Dokubo are not left out. This is just to mention but a few.

“The JNI, therefore, finds it necessary to discharge what it believes is an obligation upon itself; that is, to call on all Nigerians to shun violence in any way, in any form and at all phases of the elections and its aftermath.”

He called on not only Muslims but the entire citizens of the country to “demonstrate real and genuine sense of patriotism, responsibility, tolerance and commitment to peace and stability in Nigeria, before, during and after the forthcoming elections.”

He also called on the Independent National Electoral Commission to be committed in ensuring free, fair and credible elections.

He said, “Bearing the burden of the trust of leadership, being conscious of the imperative of truthfulness in salvaging a rather drifting polity, the JNI hereby asserts that the most significant antidotes to violence are free, fair and credible elections on one hand and faithful acceptance of the outcome of elections by all on the other.

In any election, there must be winners and losers, and we would only get it right when the elections are obviously and manifestly seen to be transparent and credible in conduct, and consequently the losers accept defeat in good faith.”
