The Nigerian Council of State is an organ of the Nigerian Government. Its functions include advising the executive on policy making.

The council has the following responsibilities:

1. Advise the President in the exercise of his powers with respect to the:-
- National population census and compilation, publication and keeping of records and other information concerning the same;
- Prerogative of mercy;
- Award of national honours;
- The Independent National Electoral Commission (including the appointment of members of that Commission);
- The National Judicial Council (including the appointment of the members, other than ex-officio members of that Council);
- The National Population Commission (including the appointment of members of that Commission); and

2. Advise the President whenever requested to do so on the maintenance of public order within the Federation or any part thereof and on such other matters as the President may direct.

The Federal Government said yesterday it would soon unveil the identities of those behind the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna bound train.

The government also blamed the unfortunate incident on what it described as unholy handshake between Boko Haram and bandits operating within the area.


It said that although security agencies were still working hard to unveil the group behind the attack, preliminary report showed that the criminal groups were collaborating, urging Nigerians to also collaborate with government to smoke them out.

Recall that Governor Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna State had revealed that the attack on the train was carried out by Boko Haram terrorists, working in collaboration with some bandits operating in Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto Niger, and Kebbi states.

But responding to questions from State House correspondents at the end of the weekly Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari at the Council Chamber, Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, the Minister of Defence, Major General Bashir Magashi, retd, and his Information and Culture counterpart, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, assured that government was on top of the matter.

Magashi, while responding to a question on whether government had identified those behind the attack, said:  “Honestly, I think the security chiefs are working hard to unveil those involved, and we will tell you very soon those carrying out these attacks.

“On both attacks in Jos and Kaduna, we will come and explain to the public what is really going on and our efforts to ensure that all these activities are stopped once and for all. We are really on top of the situation, we are planning hard and we will get it out as soon as possible.”

In 2011, PDP zoned speakership position to Southwest and zeroed in on Mulikat Akande. Tinubu instructed his ACN boys at the House of Rep to work against her and support Tambuwal instead. They succeeded.

But same Tinubu and his media urchins turned around and started accusing GEJ of marginalization. Marginalization that they engineered.

In 2012, GEJ wanted to remove fuel subsidy, a cankerworm that has continued to plague the national treasury, again Tinubu gathered his urchins to Ojota to protest against that noble decision even though I’m sure he knew better but chose to play politics.

To culminate his betrayal, in 2013, he entered into alliance with a known ethnic bigot and an illiterate, all for his personal gains and selfish ambition.

The result of that alliance is that Nigeria and Nigerians have faced the worst kind of government in human history. Nepotism, killing and maiming of citizens have become order of the day. And welfare of cows has been elevated above everything else.

And you say Tinubu will get the reward for all these?

If Tinubu benefits from all these treachery, I will know there’s no God of Justice and truth up above.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has faulted the arrangement for a consensus Presidential candidate in the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

Wike described the consensus arrangement as rubbish and fake news used in deceiving PDP members.

Speaking with PDP delegates and members in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, on Wednesday, the Presidential aspirant said consensus could only happen through equity, justice, and fairness.

He recalled telling a former Senate President that he would not support a consensus arraignment in PDP.

According to Wike: “I am not here for any consensus rubbish. I have told people not to deceive our party members with fake news about consensus. We all believe in consensus, but it must come with equity, justice, and fairness.

“When some of my colleagues led by the former Senate President came to me, I told them I would not fall into the consensus trap. If you want to run for election, please run, and if you are not ready, please go home.

“They want somebody who would come and bow down for them. But what the country needs now is fearless and courageous somebody.”

The likes of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki, Presidential aspirant, Atiku Abubakar and some other aspirants have been clamouring for a consensus Presidential candidate for the PDP.

Senate President, Ahmad Lawan may join the growing list of presidential aspirants who are seeking to contest on the platform of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

An associate of Lawan informed DAILY INDEPENDENT that the Number Three Citizen, who may not retain his position as Senate President in the next political dispensation, may declare interest in the race if the APC decides to throw the presidential ticket open.

While there are strong indications that the APC might zone the ticket to the South since the National Chairman is from the North, some stakeholders in the party are pushing for an open contest where all the aspirants will participate.

Leading the move for the ticket to be thrown open is Kogi state governor, Yahaya Bello who is also seeking to become the party’s presidential flagbearer.

If Lawan declares, he will be joining the growing list of aspirants which include the current Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo (SAN); Asiwaju Bola Tinubu; Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State and his Kogi State counterpart, Yahaya Bello.

Others are Rotimi Amaechi, Minister of Transportation, Kayode Fayemi, Ekiti State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, former Imo state governor and Orji Uzor Kalu, former Abia State Governor.

Godwin Emefiele, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, former Ogun state governor are also rumoured to be interested in running on the platform of the APC but they are yet to open up on whether they will also join the race or not.
