Getting the Uranium for the Plants is not a problem and we also don't have to go far for that. Niger is the third world's leading exporter of uranium. With the right people, and competent staffs we should be able to operate a Nuclear Power Plant safely and peacefully. For now, Nigeria is neither ready nor ripe to have nuclear energy as as means of generating electricity. What i think we need, is to develop a medium or (preferably) long term plan (say an 8-12yr plan) to adopt nuclear power plants as boosters to our electricity generating capacity. The advantages of nuclear power plants over other sources like hydro, thermal, gas, wind, solar etc. cannot be over-emphasized. For a country whose economy wants to be among the top 20 economies in the world by 2020, and its not even among the over 30 countries that use nuclear power plants as source of generating power, we need to start looking seriously into the issue. But like i said, we dont have to rush into it. Lets work on the ones (power stations) we have, they are not generating up to 50% of their installed capacity yet. Also the Iran-agreement idea is not a comfortable one, especially with most Nigerians (who are known to be peace-loving). We need to have a framework with which we can develop and train the necessary manpower that would handle this technology, and who in turn would be able to transfer the knowledge to many more nigerian electrical/electronics engineers. |
Nuclear energy is definitely one of the best solutions for growing energy needs of the modern world. Nuclear energy is much more abundant energy source than fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) and unlike them presents clean and safe method to produce electricity. Yes nuclear energy is safe energy source and new Chernobyl is almost impossible to happen again considering the safety measures in modern nuclear power plants. Chernobyl happened due to some really bad mistakes (bad reactor design and inexperienced crew) and the majority of experts believe Chernobyl is one time only accident. Nuclear energy is also clean energy source from the ecological point of view because it emits no harmful greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The only real problem regarding nuclear energy is the nuclear waste although as some experts say this problem is less significant than for instance of waste that is produced by coal, or the by the silt that builds up behind dams. Nuclear power plants' safety especially increased thanks to third generation reactors which have significantly reduced the possibility of a core meltdown accident and soon fourth generation will be also making its entrance, ensuring even higher security levels. Nuclear energy is ecologically even more acceptable than hydropower because hydroelectric dams have negative impact on nearby ecosystems they alter. Nuclear power is used in many countries of the modern world and France here convincingly leads the way with 77 % of its electricity generated in nuclear power plants. More than 30 countries in the world use nuclear power plants for generating necessary electricity and lots of nuclear power plants is being built, especially in Asia where countries like China and India are under the constant need of new energy sources because of large demands of their sudden economic growth and nuclear energy is one of the best, if not the best solution to satisfy increasing energy needs. Just for example, one pound of uranium produces 20,000 times more energy than one pound of coal which means that nuclear energy is also very competitive energy source despite the fact that nuclear power plants have high initial building costs because operational costs are relatively inexpensive. Nuclear energy could be also the right solution for poor countries and their economic growth, of course with the slight push of rich countries in the form of financial aid and necessary technology. Of course, maximum safety measures must be always on in nuclear power plants and therefore experienced and well trained crew is much needed which could be the only real problem in these countries considering their general economic infrastructure and conditions they live in. Sorry to digress a little. Being a first class product is good but in reality, how many first class products eventually become millionaires ($ millions not N millions) in their lifetime? How many first class products start up their own companies and contribute to mankind's development or sustenance by so doing? How many first class products make impact in their countries and the world by extension? How many first class products (engineers/scientists) have invented stuffs that mankind will keep referring to? How many first class products end up living fulfilled lives, being all they could ever have been? How many first class products know what they' were really born to do and fulfilled it (as in maximised their true potentials)? If Africa has such a large pool of first class people, how many first class products are in leadership positions in government and politics? Why is Africa still where it is? So many great people in life (or those that have achieved greatness in life were not 1st class products. What should be of more concern to us? Is it having a certificate that says you're a first class product in your chosen field, or really being able to make a positive difference in the world? Sorry to digress once again, i thought we should also look into this. |
8 letter word that starts with "q" and ends with "n"? D answer appears on the title twice, and you all have been asking it in each post. Am i getting the vibes that there are no smart peeps around here? |

Can't anyone ask meaningful questions? |
Should one's opinion affect another? Do you know Nairaland is the 12th in rankings in terms of website traffic (visitors) in Nigeria, and the 1st in rankings in terms of indigenous website traffic? Just answer, do you know? |
I'm not Okaychukwu. I'm fine though, if that's what you mean. ![]() Do you get uncomfortable when asked questions that might not do well with you? |

I think Dragon's Den Nigeria is just another way to make the sponsors seem as though they are contributing to entrepreneurship in Nigeria, when in actual fact all they are doing is promoting themselves and making money from those who want to be part of the show (with the PIN issue) i.e. UBA and MTN. I think they deliberately do not choose those with brilliant business plans and ideas but rather choose more of those with flawed ideas and plans, so they can make the dragons not part with their money, as much as possible (and selectively choose those whom they think would benefit from the scheme, i won't be surprised if those people have a customer relation with UBA, as in have accounts with them 4 sometime). I can't believe the number of those who appear on screen to make a fool of themselves, when in actual fact, they knew such pple would make a fool of themselves. I know a few people with really brilliant ideas and products/services that registered but nothing for them as per appearing on the show. So to me, it's just one of those arranged mediocre shows on TV. |
In other words, if your conscience allows you to kill, you'll do it with immediate effect?I'm not talking about a seared conscience, am talking about a conscience that is fed with God's word everytime. A heart that's right with God, and not a reprobate heart. Prove your actions with God's word. If after quoting the scripture i quoted in my last post, he feels it's okay for him, then why not? As far as his (right) conscience allows him. Though personally, i won't consider working in a brewery or a tobacco company. |
