Yea...N2.2trn for domestic and international borrowing is too much in my opinion, relative to the total budget. If however that's the route they're going, let them go there already, and finance all they say they would in the budget. Using current oil prices being low as an excuse is just not tenable. Budget benchmark $38, current price is in the $44 range.

Okay, I think I want to make some clarifications here. Going by the 2016 national Budget of so-called Change, I still wonder why people quickly use current crude oil prices and the disruptive activities of the Niger Delta Avengers as reasons why the economy is currently suffering with PMB and his team being unable to do much about it.

First off, N6.06trillion was the approved budget of which oil related revenues was projected at N820billion. This is just 13.5% of the budget. How can disruption in 13.5% affect other sources of revenue? Mind you, oil benchmark price was put at $38 per barrel with an expected output of 2.2mbpd. Stats show that from January till (May 31st 2016), we have produced an average of 2.103mbpd (95%). If we even dispute the above stats and say production has dropped to 1.4mbpd like some have reported since the last few months. This would mean production is 63.64%, and would mean a total deficit of N298.18billion (which isn't even so). Also average price of crude from January till July ending is $39.52, which is above our budget benchmark price of $38. It currently hovers above $44-$47. What we should do is task the government of the day to work harder rather than keep giving excuses on their behalf. With the naira at around N305 from the CBN now compared with N197 at budget signing stage, it means govt even have more naira income per crude oil barrel sold. The N6.06 trillion budget is supposed to be financed by N1.45 trillion non-oil revenues (23.92%), N1.51 trillion independent revenues (24.92%), and N2.22 trillion deficit (36.6% - who does that?). Government should be more worried about these meeting target instead as just this morning I saw an article on 43.2% drop in second quarter revenues from non-oil (N134 billion drop).

Philip Shuaibu was once NANS President in the early 2000s. During his time he was very vibrant and active. Though he went to Auchi Poly, he was always present in other schools/universities. I remember him coming to Ekpoma a few times to help resolve the challenges. I must say I have been surprised at his unwavering ambition in politics which has seen him steadily climb up the ladder. The guy would easily deliver Edo North votes. I'm from Edo Central, but I think Obaseki should be careful of Shuaibu cos this is a guy who knows how to climb up the ladder and can usurp him in no distant time. PDP should just get their acts right, else, na gobe.

A potential $8.5bn investment is not the same as an $8.5bn investment. It could end up being far less in reality. I think the govt ought to have learnt not to be vague giving empty promises by now. What stops the parallel market from moving up further if devaluation sets in since PMS importers would have to go to secondary sources for FX? PMB simply needs to rejig his economic team/ministers and bring in experts that can steer Nigeria into safe waters.

Why I support President Buhari on exchange policy

Many times my late father used to take a position on national matters which I did not understand. I used to spend long hours arguing with him on economic and tribal matters but he would simply stand his ground and be officious which was very annoying.

I had just returned from England full of ideas and I wanted to improve his business for him. This old man had sent his children overseas to study and he simply refused to allow us to practice what we learnt. He was happy to allow us to run the business but there were some "no go areas" which I did not understand.

After watching Nigeria for over 25 years and seeing the "boom bust" cycle happen twice, I now have a better understanding of third world economics and politics. I am now very weary of international agencies like IMF, World Bank and all these high sounding economists on CNN who prescribe policies like road side medicine peddlers who sell "cure all" medicines for all diseases.

I definitely agree with President Buhari PMB that devaluation of the Naira will only bring hardship upon all Nigerians and it will not solve the problem at hand. Any devaluation will only make a few richer and the masses poorer.

Engineers and Scientists follow an exact science. When they advise you on certain steps in a sequence it is possible to predict the outcome in a deliberate way. An Aeroplane will always take off and land with such certainty that we are willing to take the risk of flying even for holidays. The same thing applies in the medical field. Engineers and Scientists are all able to prove what will NOT happen with some accuracy and they will back up their position with data and research.

Unfortunately Social Scientist and Economists are not in the same business. They are busy peddling their trade of faulty medication all over the market place without fear of reproach. They occupy all the news media like CNN, BBC , CNBC etc and spend hours analyzing and advising people, companies and countries on economic policy and even political policy. They are quick to advice on Syria and Iran but when it fails they simply move to another topic without anybody calling they to order.

They are also quick to advise Egypt and Nigeria on currency Managment but nobody notices how they have failed.

It is likely that a wise president would have posed the following questions in the event of devaluation :

1. Will Organised labour ask for an increase commensurate to the inflation figures... ? Yes
2. Will it increase production and export? Definitely but not in the near term.
3. What is the predicted gap between the parallel rate and the official rate after devaluation to say N280 to the dollar? (No one knows)

PMB said on Thursday that he is not convinced that devaluation will solve our problem. This article reinforces his position.

Where devaluation is not matched with increased supply of dollar on a "willing seller willing buyer" basis, in my opinion will not solve the problem. Therefore we should avoid it unless we are sure devaluation will increase dollar supply. It will only increase poverty for already the impoverished Nigerian.

Yes it a well known economic principle that devaluation encourages export. But in the short term, there is nothing to export. The few exporters we have already bring their export proceeds through the back door and sell on black market anyway. Besides as my father said Nigeria already suffers from some cultural and structural defects that can not be fixed by international economic "Dictaks" alone.

If devaluation brings this difficult outcome for Egypt, it will surely be worse for Nigeria as we are NOT structurally diversified as Egypt. We are far more import dependent than Egypt.

Another proponent of devaluation are the state governments who think they will benefit if we devalue, thinking they will have more naira to pay salary and provide social services. But I think it will short lived . The resulting inflation will wipe out the benefit in no time.

I support PMB on devaluation. Perhaps we should take our time to observe the patient before taking the surgeon's knife to start an operation where we are unsure of the final outcome.

Perhaps creating a third tier interbank rate that allows people to inflow funds to settle expenses ,credit cards bills, school fees etc will reduce the pressure on the roadside market. But the transactions should be subject to international rules and anti money laundering AML rules. Spending money on Amazon, Konga, and other online purchases up to a limit depending on the category of customer . A limit of $500 per week up to a maximum of $4,000 per annum will definitely be enough for many young people and it will prevent people from buying cash on the road side to pay international fees ACCA annual dues etc. This will greatly reduce the pressure on the currency for now and it will satisfy the majority of normal people who do millions of simple transactions daily. It will also allow many people to remit funds to Nigeria for their family and friends.

It would not be correct to say the prices of goods and services haven't increased within the last one year. To answer your number 4 question, YES, THE PRICES OF GOODS AND SERVICES HAVE INCREASED SIGNIFICANTLY (NOT NECESSARILY DOUBLED), DUE TO THE EFFECTS OF THE PARALLEL FX MARKET. That aside, any devaluation now will lead to more inflation and another round of increase in price of goods and services, which would make Nigerians definitely poorer.

Ignorance is a disease. The title of the Talent Release Form says Production is Presentation Auditions, meaning it's just for AUDITIONS. A proper Contract/ Talent Release form would be signed if the person scales through and is selected for the Production with compensation terms clearly stated. Meanwhile the Producer has the right to use the taped auditions for anything they want in future should the case arise, but there's nothing there really.

Even though I have been anti-APC, and pro-GEJ/PDP somewhat, I think the 2019 elections would be tricky. As it stands, APC will win 2019, whether PMB goes for a 2nd term or hands over to someone else.

The strongest chance for APC to lose power in 2019 is if some of their key members become disgruntled and leave the party and then join forces with other opposition to either form a new party, join a relatively new party like KOWA, or join PDP. It would still be difficult for them even if they join PDP.

This relatively new party with key APC and PDP members in their fold, and with a presidential candidate from the North (NW, NE, NC), and a strong VP from the south, would have great chances in 2019. And they need to come hard on all APC has been doing wrongly, including broken promises, and then watch them have a landslide victory in 2019. Otherwise APC would meet just a few promises, and continue manipulating the system. Don't forget the power of the incumbent, they won't make GEJ's mistakes. Even if it means controlling INEC and the judiciary.

You all need to know that administrators are not necessarily technical expert(s) in a field though he or she is allowed to know enough in order to be able to make decisions or contribute to discussions that will add values to the bottom-line.

Administrators are not necessarily technical experts but more often than not they have experience in that chosen field they're drafted into. Fashola's experience with IPP projects while he was governor is very limited to be considered for a position as the minister of power, not to talk of housing and works. The time he'll take to deliver would be longer(if he has good people working with him, and not sabotaged), he can easily be sold dummies, or bamboozled, or worse still trust less cos he's unsure of facts he's been presented with, and hence, reduce operational efficiency that ought to be possible. However, he's a man that I think would mean well. Nigeria has more competent people by the way.

I remember many years ago when I was in JSS1 in a boarding school. I was sick so I didn't go for evening prep and was sleeping on my bunk. I found myself floating in space and moving at some considerable speed, passing floating rocks and all these planetary bodies. I was scared and woke up. I believe Olisa Metuh is on point. Saraki got the SP position because PDP senators decided to support him along with his own APC caucus senators. Now that he is on trial, it would be naive of PDP senators to abandon him just yet. They have to see how this plays out in terms of the merit of the charges against him. Of course these PDP lawmakers have their cards up their sleeves, and this includes trying to assume leadership of the upper chamber if all goes against Saraki. But it won't be for betraying or abandoning him, but for moving on, depending on how the whole thing pans out. Let's not also forget that politics can play out seeing Saraki innocent of all charges or the case being struck out altogether as the APC would also watch what cards to put on the table. It's all political chess imho.

Much has been made of President Buhari's recent appointments. Some see them as being nepotism, with him giving a majority of the appointments so far to Northerners. In response to this some have defended by saying that under Jonathan the Northerners were also not given a fair shot at key positions. This list below totally debunks that. It shows that whilst Jonathan had many failings nepotism and traibalism was not one. GEJ ran an inclusive government, and we admonish Mr President to do the same. I wish to start by adding the benefit of my time as a student and then resident in the UK. Living in Abuja now.

The first thing that I discovered about UK-born, white, English undergraduates was that all of them did holiday or weekend job to support themselves – including the children of millionaires amongst them. It is the norm over there – regardless of how wealthy their parents are. And I soon discovered that virtually all other foreign students did the same – except status – conscious Nigerians.

I also watched Richard Branson (owner of Virgin Airline) speaking on the Biography Channel. To my amazement, he said that his young children travel in the economy class – even when the parents (he and his wife) are in upper class. Richard Branson is a billionaire in Pound sterling. A quick survey would show you that only children from Nigeria fly business or upper class to commence their studies in the UK. No other foreign students do this. There is no aircraft attached to the office of the Prime Minister in the UK. He travels on BA. And the same goes for the Royals. The Queen does not have an aircraft for her exclusive use.

These practices simply become the culture which the next generation carries forward. Have you seen the car that Kate Middleton (the wife of Prince William) drives? VW Golf or something close to it. But there’s one core difference between them and us (generally speaking), they (even the billionaires among them) work for their money, most of us steal ours
If we want our children to bring about the desired change we have been praying for on behalf of our dear country, then please, please let’s begin now and teach them to work hard so they can stand alone and most importantly be content and not having to “steal” which seems to be the norm these days.

We have Nigerian Children who have never worked for 5 minutes in their lives insisting on flying “only” first or business class and using the latest cars fully paid for by their “loving“ parents.

I often get calls from anxious parents” my son graduated 2 years ago and is still looking for a job, can you please assist!”

I am yet to get a satisfactory answer, but between you and i, chances are that the big boy is cruising around Abuja with a babe dressed to the nines, in his dad’s sparkling new SUV with enough “pocket money” to put your salary to shame. It is not at all strange to hear a 28 year old who has NEVER worked for a day in his or her life in Nigeria but “earns” a six figure “salary” from parents for doing absolutely nothing.

I see them in my office once in a while, 26 years old with absolutely no skill to sell apart from a shiny CV, written by his dad’s secretary in the office. Of course, he has a driver at his beck and call and he is driven to the job interview. We have a fairly decent conversation and we get to the inevitable question- so, what salary are you looking to earn? Answer comes straight out – N250,000.00.

I ask if that is per month or per annum.

No wonder corruption continues to thrive. We have a society of young people who have been brought up to expect something for nothing, as if it were a birthright.

Even though the examples I have given above are from parents of considerable affluence, similar patterns can be observed from Abeokuta to Adamawa.

Wake up mum! Wake up dad! This syndrome – “my children will not suffer what I suffered" is destroying your tomorrow. You are practically loving your child to death.

I learnt the children of a former Nigeria Head of State with all the stolen (billions) monies in their custody, still go about with security escort as wrecks. They are on drugs, several time because of the drug, they collapse in public places. The escort will quickly pack them and off they go. What a life! No one wants to marry them.

Henry Ford said “hard work does not kill.” We are getting everything wrong in Nigeria now, including family setting. It is time to prepare your children for tomorrow, the way the world is going, only those that are rugged, hard working and smart working that will survive. How will your ward fare?

Please forward this to all the parents you know and love. We must begin to save our young children from unintended consequences of "too much love" and weak parenting. It is the only way we can build a strong and decent Nigeria.
