Ha Babaa, he doth spake such truely.

“I don’t think we are weak defensively but we are an offensive team,” said Wenger. “Sometimes that exposes our defenders a bit more than other teams.

“I believe we have quality defenders. One is Thomas Vermaelen and he did not play last year.

“In open play, we were one of the better defences [last season] but we conceded too many goals on set-pieces and that is where we want to improve this season.”
From Arsenal.com

Like I said, I get the comparisons about setpiece and open play, but, which is a very big but, this is what he says when he does not want to buy anymore. I am fearing ooooo grin

debosky:
Vela has quality, he just needs to learn to score more than champagne goals - he should be able to score when we NEED a goal not when it's simply cherry on the cake.

As for CB debate, I'd buy a Cahill or Samba and have both JD and LK as the back ups. Squillaci can be a back up for gunnersaurus. grin

Is Wenger actually seeking to sign a defender?? It seems to have gone all quiet on that front and if we start the season without a new CB it will be a big mistake.
Did anyone else hear the commentator say, 'What a cheeky finish that was . . . . .Velaesque'. So Vela now has a finish named after him grin

Debo you'v not heard Baba I jebu's latest comment ni? Apparently, we have no problem in defense grin. Actually though, I get the poin the is trying to make. But the scary thing however is that, that is usually the prelude to not buying anybody. Those hoping for signings. . . . . .be afraid be very afraid. grin

@Dudu you see its in that phrase that the arguments starts.

I will grant you that Theo is not skillful, but that he is not intelligent? His technical ability might let him down often but that is not lack of intelligence. You dont suddenly develop the ability to dribble past your opponents. You either have it or you dont. The gifts he has (pace and timing), he uses intelligently and his returns testify to that. VanPersie owes a susbstantial deal of his come back to form to Theo's intelligence in and around the right side of that penalty area.

Now if onyl Nasri were as unintelligent as Theo. wink grin
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 6:16pm On Jul 12, 2011
Note that I said heralded. Infact I believed we were going to sell him to Crystal palace before the whole Sylvinho matter happened.

As per nasri, both clubs denied ever bidding for him. Its just the £20m figure that's my question. That's how rumors become fact.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 5:43pm On Jul 12, 2011
Cole wasn't anymore heralded than Gibbs when he was put on. That's not to say that I exactly agree with AW's option of promoting Gibbs. But a bit of perspective for people trying to put the boy down. And to be fair he put in enough of a performance to warrant people asking for him to replace Clichy sometimes last season.

Just a quick question: please who bid £20m for Nasri that seems to be the new catch phrase, 'Arsene is taking a £20m gamble'.

And DK, where you dey? I don leave quenchon for you since, you no answer?

shaking my head. so cesc and nasri will be like new signings now, won't they? you are a big joke.
wenger has won nothing with them. and if his egotistical fight to keep them succeeds, he'll win nothing with them again next season.
Errr who said they were. We are just trying to hold on to our more talented players. Or isnt that the accusation everyone levels at Arsenal.

OVER TO YOU FRANCESC FABREGAS!!!

He definitely stays, come what may?
He stays.

So if a club comes in with a big offer, knowing that he's in the final year of his contract, you will say, "You're staying, "
I've just told you that we are in a position where we can say "No".

And you will, in the case of Samir?
We will.
Errm DK, is this what you were talking about? wink

dipo2much:
Well, it appears AW was never serious about getting that CB we have been agitating for. Its a foregone conclusion that Cahill isn't coming (too expensive), samba doesn't seem to interest AW as much as he does us fans, and 'want-away' Squills' skills aren't impressing any football team enough to even bid =N=1M. So with Verm, Kos, djorou and Squills (and the young reserves players) it appears we are already paying enough weekly wages on central defence alone. If we can't offload squills, then maybe AW won't sign any T-Rex CB as we have been hoping for.
Here we go again.
And we haven't even replaced clichy yet.
I think we are so F U C K E D.
We have only Verm as our decent CB. Kos comes close but isn't the package yet, and Djourou and Squills are complete wastes. Doomed, we are.
Did he tell you something he didnt tell the rest of us? undecided grin

Gibbs is the new LB, Baba Ijebu haff check the oracle. No going back.

Arsenal are in tourist class, we have no class.

Alvarez for 12milla, I swear if AW had bought this guy 80% of fans will be screamming: 'Godammit Arsene, not another unproven youngster'

This matter is so laughable LeGrove twitted that he admits he never heard of the guy before this summer but he's critisizing the club for missing out on signing him. As in seriously?!

meanwhile, in other news:

http://www.football365.com/arsenal/7021179/-15m-Injury-
Diaby injury could cost £15m

According to The Daily Mirror's John Cross, the journalist considered to be closest to Arsenal, Diaby is 'available for transfer' but is unlikely to be sold this summer because 'he is injured and is likely to miss the start of the season and Arsenal will struggle to shift the £60,000-a-week midfielder in that condition'.

Presuming that figure is roughly correct and that Arsenal would expect to receive £10m for the French international, his latest setback thus adds up to a £15m setback. Food for thought, surely, for those Arsenal supporters contemplating a 6.5% increase in the price of their season tickets.

It remains unclear, meanwhile, just when and how Diaby's latest injury was inflicted given that the Gunners only returned to training on Monday and, after a month on the sidelines, he briefly returned to fitness for their final match of last season.

pls what did these ones smoke? re.ta.rd.s
Just to educate the THA . .the Transformer Huggers Association (apologies Debo), when you see statements like this in an artcile. It's a wind up. Dont be a toy soldier. wink grin

duduspace:
Not sure about this recent rumor but if its from John Cross, then there is likely some truth in it, the degree to which the media has twisted it though should rightly be questioned. There has always been a rumor around those in the know at the emirates that Diaby's leg never really fully healed after the horrible tackle he suffered in the 06/07 season and that he's never been able to play for a consistently long period without some complaint flaring up on his ankle hence the reason for his frequent visit to the Physios and the reason for his furious reaction to Barton's tackle at the time as well as Arsene's disgust at Shawcross's tackle on Ramsey.
It is one of the reasons why I think Wenger is going for Ricky Alvarez as competition/Backup possibly with Ramsey also coming into the frame. If any of Cesc or Nasri leaves we should rightly expect like for like replacements.
John Cross, ni99a is you serious? grin

John Cross stated categorically last season that we had sold Cesc, dont be fooled, he doesnt know more than you do.

Whats my business with closing in or closing on? You said

Clichy's switch to MCFC didn't take too long as we see
And I ask again are you sure?

Clichy's switch to MCFC didn't take too long as we see, but look for how long we've been 'closing in on' Gervinho, Cahill, Samba and Alvarez
Are you sure about this?
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 5:19pm On Jul 04, 2011
@Debo, Baines or Enrique? I'm reviewing my earlier stance on Baines. For all his attcaking prowess, he doesnt seem to be defensively astute.

Im hearing Boateng could be available, but we are in contention with Bayern Munshit. He's German after all. Although have to admit, he is inconsistent IMO.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 5:13pm On Jul 04, 2011
Clichy to City.

And the last one bites the dust. This is a sad day for me personally. cry Not because Clichy is a wonderful player no, but becuase it underlines the problem with our support. A very unceremonial departure of the last remnant of legendary stuff.

In my humble opinion, Clichy is leaving because he doesnt feel welcome at Arsenal anymore. For gawds sakes this guy is an 'invincible'!!!! While Arsenal fans went about worshipping Nasri and Arshahohoho because they were the shiny new things they were craving for.

Now one has employed Darren Dein to screw us over and the other we are fasting and praying he has a swang song before packing it in grin.

Anyways all the best Clichy, you served well. Top man. Hope Theo Walcott finally buries your career when we meet. Its not personal, its business.  cool grin
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 1:10pm On Jul 04, 2011
Wailing and gnashing at a Clichy move will be rank hypocrisy on the fan's part Debo. When everyone knew he was the poster boy for our bad defence . . .what was his siggy again? . . .'The weakest link in the defence?' grin

If we don't get Evra or Cole from the EPL, in my opinion we have weakened our left side. Oh wait we can't get them.

Seriously I presume AW knows why he left. Being a stats man though, I don't think it was because of his numbers. Asides fandemonium and scapegoatism, he compared favorably with the others.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 11:01am On Jul 04, 2011
And people think this guy's daddy is the saviour Arsenal has been waiting for. Henry . . . .Cesc . . .Clichy . . .now even Nasr's team has called him in to screw us proper. I dey laff oooo cheesy

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 8:08am On Jul 04, 2011
@docky I hope we can tackle this matter at length, but for now a few clarifications. Iya Nasiru shekpe goes out for celebay purposes. It is not for her pikin alone. Mama is generous. grin

Alrite, I remember having a mini-debate with Dudu about this Nasri in the Fab role matter. Nasri is not direct, and hasn't got the vision of Fabregas. Hence the abysmal return on assists even with impressive goal returns. If we sell Fab this year, I can still bet he will still cop more than 1 assist next season that Nasri managed the whole of last season grin.

And you realise you have just rearranged our entire attack? wink

And for those Darren Dein is fooling with all this Soyinka english. Before a player opens his mouth and say his coach should make worldclass signing he had better ensure he himself is one. Like AW said, every player wants a new signing, just not in their position.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread (for Arsenal Fans) by slimshay(m): 9:30pm On Jul 03, 2011
If the boy truly believes he was bought for the first team. . .I simply dont know what to say to him.

One thing is sure though, he'll get a couple of chances here and there in cup games, no more no less.

So it isn't about the money now eh Sammy? Can we cross ManShitty of the list then boy?
