I have been hearing lots of people, talking about different types of Agricultural produce they can plant or would want to plant, But what i have not seen on these forum is for someone to really come out and tell us, all the stress, difficulties, ups and down he/she went through before setting up there plantation.

I want to start by saying i have managed to secure mine self 13 plots of land. Each plot is a 100 by 100 feet. i want to start up an oil palm plantation. I have been able to buy 1755 oil palm Nursery from NIFOR. My story goes like these.......

Each oil palm nursery cost 150 Naira
Loading of each oil palm Nursery inside the vehicle is 20 Naira each
I paid 50,000 to convey the goods from IMO state to Ibusa Delta state.


On getting to the farm, the vehicle could not get to ibusa on time, the vehicle got to ibusa around 9.30pm. So the vehicle had to park in the house for the night. The next morning the journey to the farm began around 6.30Am, on getting to the entrance of the farm, the vehicle could not go in, because of poor road network. The vehicle managed to drive in but as the vehicle drove in, some sticks punctured one tire. So we had to off load the hold oil palm nursery on the ground. So we hard to go hire a pick up van. The van owner charged us 6,000 to convey the nursery to a location closer to mine own farm because there are other people farm in front of mine farm. now after that, i had to call the Hausa boys to use there wheelbarrow to convey the nursery to the farm, they charged 24,000. na wa ohhhh

Now the next stage is for me to plant. My mum's brother did one of these Agricultural causes is school, so he is a professional when planting oil palms.

We used a spacing is 8.7feet. you heard me clear, 8.7 feet. while they where doing the measurement, you know when planting oil palm, you have to do pegging, some hard roots was sitting on the sport where he was suppose to plant the oil palm, there was so much roots on the ground, we called the Hausa people again, they charged me 30,000 to uproot all the hard roots. so work continued. As am specking now, they have finished planting the 1755 oil palms. They would be buying more 200 palms because its like the land is more bigger than with i was told.

While am putting these here is for the new people that wants to go into farming. People, if you must go into farming, you must have money..... The more you go into it, the more unforeseen issues comes, and if you don't have cash to solve the issue immediately, your work would be suspended.

Also it does not end in just planting, there are still lots of things to be done before the said three years when you would starting harvesting.


So far so good, i have don't lots of mistakes in setting up mine oil palm plantation. If i have read some post that advices one on NL about setting up Oil palm plantation, i would not have made these silly mistakes.

Never you buy expensive lands.
Buy from NIFOR in your State not from outside your state
Let there me good motor able rood, so the vehicle conveying the palms can go into your land direct.
Make sure there is know roots in the ground that would disturb when planting

You mentioned 8.7 feet. Are you talking of the depth or spacing? If you mean spacing, you got it very wrong. I studied agriculture too. For newbies, the actual spacing for palm plantation is 10m X 10m (intert & intra row spacing. Depth of planting could be about 10cm. Beware, before you make mistakes.

My container with 3 cars (2009 Nissan, 2007 Xterra & 2004 Sienna) landed in Lagos on the 15th of January and till today Feb. 3, the Agent has not cleared it after i gave him 600k, 500k and 350k respectively for the 3 cars even a week before they landed.

Week 1: He claims the container was inspected by customs on the 18th (3 days after it birthed) and they asked for extra 70k for some clothes in the container...and this dragged.

Week 2: He said there were changes in policies causing the delay and the goods has entered 'ALERT' whatever that means. He now said later in the week that he has spent 158k and still trying to get full amount for 'dummorage'.

Week 3: Today is wednesday and he has not picked his calls this week.

Please can someone explain to me how this clearing thing works?

Clearing cars or any unprohibited goods shouldn't exceed 3-7 days. Did you use shipping companies like dhl, fedex etc.? It will be easier to clear goods shipped by dhl, fedex, tnt etc. They normally send the documents containing your import duty from customs. So, ask the person what shipping company he used and the custom duty documents.

You can do 10cm x 10cm spacing. The crop to be intercopped in the same hole with the groundnut. It's good u intercrop with erect crops.

You can intercrop any crop of your choice. Regular spacing reduces the competition among crops and also allow maximum circulation of CO2.

I learnt how to plant groundnut then. I still have the knowledge upstairs.

Is like you're a student of MOUAU? Anyway, groundnut farming is very profitable since fertilizer application is not necessary. The most needed nutrient element is Boron, while groundnut has the ability to fix Nitrogen needed for growth. You can go on. You can also intercrop with maize to maximize your output. I'm an agriculturist by profession, you can consult me in your farm.

You are still new in this thing man... just wait until after u have done six or 8 months with ur 70birds and bring back ur report.... i have been into poultry and fish farming and i still do activelly.... i have 2500 layers on my farm (and this is even small)... so i know what i am talking about. and if i may tell you ur 70birds can only give u like 2% profit if they are layers... u will soon discover this when ure months into it and u will have to wait 3-5 days to pick 2 crates from them. and if i may have to advice anyone on this thread also.... from my reaseach of 5 years, agro business can only give you a desired and favourable outcome if done on a large scale.... cos the larger it is, the larger ur turnover. now what we are saying here is with 100k fish farming will give this young man higher turnover than poultry/layers. Nobody is disputing the fact that poultry is very lucrative!.... infact i will add that it is very very lucrative and awesomely rewarding when done well... (i am a living testimony to this)... i can tell you that with just a land and 100k, fish farming makes more sense than poultry! provided there is constant supply of water and mind u water is equaly important for both birds and fish. ur birds can go 24hrs without food... but they can never go 20hrs without water if u try this, 70% of them will never lay again!!! and i repeat again! you will only keep feeding them at a colosal loss! (he doesnt even need to dig a pond there are cheaper ways of doing that)...... now to a short analyses of ur 70birds, they will eat one bag in 2 days it will remain some to feed about 50 of them for the 3rd day or u can even rough it and use a bag for 3days no problem..... it is what u give them that they give back to u. now lets go with a bag for 3days a bag of feed @ present is @least N2300 even when localy milled on small scale. you will get 2crates and maybe very few pieces from the 70 in 3days.... a crate ull sell @550 if ure lucky.... most guys sell @ N500 or N520 that is bad marketing anyway!... no crate of egg leaves my farm for less than N600 (i achieved this because i created my own market myself) now u buy feed N2300 in 3 days and you sell N1100 how does that sound!... this is what happens when poultry is done on a small scale!... you cant even employ a help with that cos there will be no money to pay them.... mind you, this is just feeding alone ooooo it excludes the cost of (Water, vacines,electricity etc)... i will advice again! the best bet for him is Fish with what he has! (Mind you guys! i am not trying to discourage people from poultry i am only saying it should be done well and properly to make good profit from it. i am a serious poultry farmer too oooo and i make good money from it. i make good money from Fish farming too) (on a final note i will jokingly like to say that only the serious minded will read all that i have written)

You said the truth. I'm an agriculturist by profession, with 100k invested in poultry, you are likely to earn little or nothing. Birds are good consumers, starving them for hours will bring serious reduction in yield and growth. But fish can stay for about 3 days or more without food, the only possible problem in fishery is water supply.

Your 100k may not be enough to feed and administer medicine to your birds. However, fish could stay up to 3 days without food, while poultry must have feed steadily in their trough. If you have a good water supply around the site, go for fishery.

Nutrient inbalance or sickness. Make sure they feed highly rich proteinous food, clean water and calcium in form of bone meal. Also, make sure there is enough ventilation and space.

Depends on who you are sending to. Try and see if the person will accept Bitcoin.
