Quit the job before you are sacked as this record will affect any background check on u for future employment.

Next time, call a spade a spade!

All the best.
Career / Re: Who Wants To Be A Petroleum Engineer? Please Read This. by sogah: 9:29am On Jan 10, 2015
Good point.

I stated this in the second Paragraph but that does not mean the end of the road for PEs.

Some companies prefer PEs for some job functions, reservoir/production engineers as examples

Thanks
Career / Who Wants To Be A Petroleum Engineer? Please Read This. by sogah: 3:51pm On Jan 09, 2015
This short article is written as a guide for final year secondary and 100 Level PE students in Nigeria who want to be Petroleum Engineers and work for an Exploration and Production companies in life. WRITTEN FROM PERSONAL EXPERIENCE!

A lot of science students ignorantly joined friends/ are wrongly advised to study Petroleum Engineering as first degree in the university and end up regretting all their lives after school. Frankly speaking, the only sector where a petroleum engineer can work and be fulfilled career-wise is in the oil & gas sector. Unfortunately for the PEs, other engineering functions such as Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical e.t.c have equal or more opportunities in the oil & gas sectors.

Most Oil companies are not really interested in your repertoir of knowledge as a fresh graduate, they are interested in any relevant candidates' ability to learn new knowledge which any true engineering graduate from reputable Nigerian universities with 2.2 and above can do conveniently.

As against recent popular thinking, starting your own company is not as easy as people think. Oil business (Upstream $ Downstream) is a capital intensive business which requires a lot of work experience and "connections" to start up in NIgeria. On cost for example, an average offshore well may cost as high as $50,000,000 (9.2 billion Naira)- this excludes cost of other wells, pipelines, platform, licence, royalties, taxes e.t.c.

Things you need to know as a Prospective Petroleum Engineering Student

1. You need a 2:1 or First Class grades to work as a regular employee in the Exploration and Production companies (SHELL, Total, Chevron, e.t.c) in Nigeria as at today.

2. It's sometimes better to have a 2:1 in the Sciences (Physics, Geology, Mathematics e.t.c) than have a 2:2 or third class in PE in Nigeria.

3. You must be ready to write a lot of aptitude and scholarship tests.

4. You can gain employment easily without "connection" during NYSC Services Year with a 2:1 or first Class depending on job availability.

5. You must be ready to learn other vocations as a backup to your grade.

6. As a Fresh PE with an E&P Company in Nigeria, you will probably earn 3-4 times more than 95% of you friends in other Professions.

7. Using connections to get an engineering job with an E&P as a fresh graduate is not common - Engineers are the cores of this business and the best are usually needed for the continuity of business.

What attributes do you need to do well in school as PE student?

1. Determination to succeed: self motivation

2. Sincerity with your own ability( you can cross to other departments after 1st year result)

3. Dedication to school work - lots of TDBs & MTNs

4. Use relevant textbooks, JPT and SPE papers

5. Join SPE and participate wisely

6. Prayers

NOTE

1. Having a good grade alone does not guarantee you a job in an E&P company.

2. Oil companies recruit only if there are relevant openings for the PEs.

3. Only the best of the best candidates are usually employed in the long run - over 20,000 qualified candidates may compete for 5 job positions.

...If you still wanna be a petroleum engineer, wish you all the best.

Sogah.

Abbrv.
PE - Petroleum Engineer
SPE - Society of Petroleum Engineers
JPT - Journal of Petroleum Technology
TDB - till day break ( studying all night)
MTN - morning till night ( studying during the day)
E&P - Exploration and Production (Joint owners of oil blocks)

Thanks y'all.

If I am in Houston, I wouldn't have asked such a question because most of the highways are in good shape and I have also noticed that I don't really see much of Elantra models on my way from Lagos to Ibadan (Though I see kia cerato a lot)

Nice one guys.

@...tony, Ur first degrEe is usually the most import. If it is Engineering, I will advise u to stick to it. Crossing from Geology to Petroleum is a common mistake people make.
However, it is possible to do this if u wish to lecture in a University

Guys,
Just make ur first class or 2:1 in relevant engineering courses(Petr, Elect, civil, mech e.t.c
Msc may not be necessary in Engrng.

But Masters degree is required for geology

Practise the relevant Aptitude test well!

Multinational companies(Chevron, Mobil, Total) will run after u!

It worked for me

smileyCongratulations my igbo folks out there!!! This is the beginning of a new dawn. @least, we now have an idea of what d dividends of democracy is like.grin.I have been to few countries in asia, europe and the US and would still have also been interested in watching this happen in Enugu if I was there.

Without mincing words my brothers, there is still a lot of rooms for improvements to qualify this airport as a standard intl airport. Our leaders travel to the western countries and sure know what's obtainable out there.since these opportunities don't come always, heathrow,Qatar, Bangkok intl airports should be a basis for our comparison. Can u imagine Heathrow intl airport, London operating just during d day?

Let me back up a step, with our poor maintainance culture and poor safety culture in dis country, can we manage this kind of sophisticated airports? Can our airport officials do their duty decently without asking for a tip?
Was flying at night part of d original plan? Is this a political agenda or what? Did they actually use all the funds earmarked for this project in its execution?

Well the onus lie on all of us nigerians, let's do all we can to flush bribery and corruption out of our country. Let's respect our religions and culture and give 'one Nigeria 'a second chance!

...Nigeria o ni baje!!!

Congratulations! To even get an invite is a sign that u r good enough to be considered.

Asking for the salary range is indeed a very relevant question-it shows you have really did a research about the company.Try to go with the range most people have given here.

However, you shouldn't have said the salary will determine whether u will honour the invite or not as many are out there looking for any job that will keep them busy.

I wish you all the best. smiley

From my personal experience, u don't need to know anyone to get an exxonmobil job.

Just know your stuffs, Gbam!

Is [bBleep[/b] not the name of the guy from ATBU? He had previous experience as TOTAL trainee, NO?. . .It seems you always have a way of watering down the real situation on ground.

What I know for sure is 80% fresh jobs in MNC's is based on arrangee and who you know. At least I know Exxon Mobil, Shell and Agip like back of my hand. I know like a dozen of guys that got jobs in the aforementioned without without writing job test. Worst of it is Agip that don't consider test as a criteria, all you have to know is one ashawo that is phocking Italian, you start work the next day.

Exxon is another scam. At Exxon Mobil, All you have to do is to know either Fami Dada, Asuquo or Mr. Oluwole. T.

Shell?? Yeah, where people get recruited without attending interviews? Or where 90% of SITP trainees are recruited based on insiders standing for them?

NNPC or Dpr is equally is not merit since is quota system based. The only room left is for one to get experience in the field and how do you do that, if entry level selection is fraud?

NYSC / Re: Things Corpers Should Do After POP. by sogah: 3:21am On Feb 14, 2013
jamesbridget13: Am also passing out tomoro. I wld like 2 make it clear that most graduates dont knw what next after NYSC. U need 2 be focused n determined n with God u ll make it no matter ur city of residence. U can imagine some about to pass out corp members without a CV to call ur own till this minute am typing this text while some ve already started attending interviews. When i was applying for jobs online, i recount so many of them laughing n saying ''how many ve called u 4 interview?''. My fellow about to be pushed to d labour mkt tomoro graduates! plsssss be focused n put God first in everything that u do. Wish u all d best out there.

It is true that some corps members have no idea of how a CV or Cover letter looks like. Some group of copers even suspend every job search and issues till after the service year.
I got to know this through some of my fellow corps members while serving.

When I started applying for jobs, preparing for aptitude tests and attending interviews in d early part of my service year, some 'senior corps members' (earlier batches) discouraged and even mocked me.

I served in a village and my PPA (Place of Primary Assignment) that was not in any way relevant to my course of study(a professional course). @least twice a week, I travelled to town to browse in a cyber cafe for jobs even with the high cost of living vis a vis my monthly allowance.

But with prayers and persistent hardwork, I got a job of my choice few months to the end of service.

There is nothing God can not do. Just keep praying, work on your self and develop a positive attitude; there is always a good place for you somewhere in Nigeria irrespective of your current location.
NYSC / Re: Things Corpers Should Do After POP. by sogah: 2:59am On Feb 14, 2013
catholy: i like ur post, but i ve come to realise anoda issue in dis job search. Some companies consider height during interviews, even if u answer d interview questions well the interviewer wil find a way to dismis u frm d interview spot. Am talking out of experience though they didnt say there reasons bt frm the selection process u need no prophet to tel u their criteria for selection.

Is the job a millitary or para millitary one?
