Memo To Ekiti Workers, As Civil Servants Demand For Pay For the first time in a long time, Ekiti workers appear set to free themselves loose from the "hypnotised grip" of Governor Ayodele Fayose, who makes lies and falsehood a major blank of his administration to have a firm grip on Ekiti people. He assumed office announcing over-bloated debts owed by former Governor Kayode Fayemi and deceived the people with over-bloated deductions from Ekiti federal allocation, saying Ekiti would be in debt till 2036. He denied receiving N2b Ecological Fund and N22b refunds on federal roads executed by Fayemi. But Dayo Adeyeye and President Goodluck Jonathan blew the lid off Ekiti people's eyes when they declared at Oluyemi Kayode Stadium that the money had been paid to the state. Fayose never relented in his lies, as he insisted that he never collected any refund. He never confessed collecting the N2b Ecological Fund until APC was about to approach the Fund Office in Abuja with FOI Law to get the details of cash payment of Ecological Fund to Ekiti State. Three days after Fayose confessed collecting N2b Ecological Fund, he announced that he had awarded ecological disaster control contract, curiously totalling exactly N2b. This is outside his monthly trips to Dubai immediately after the sharing of federal allocation. Recent documents by the EFCC show that Fayose is among Nigerian political office holders owning multi-billion naira mansions in Dubai. At home, he made it plain that Ekiti State is broke and that he could not guarantee regular salary payment. He claimed that he paid the same salary (N2.6b) as Fayemi, even though he had laid off about 27,000 Ekiti people that Fayemi paid one form of salary or allowance in one way or the other. For Ekiti workers, some of whom swore with their children to reject Fayemi for Fayose, find below the details of the numbers of the people hired by Fayemi but who Fayose has sent packing, yet making you his "mugus" to believe that he pays the same salary as Fayemi, while in actual fact, he is exploiting your "stupidity" as he often says that "Ekiti go" (stupid) to cause you pain while stealing your money to acquire mansions abroad: • Fayemi hired 708 board members. Fayose reduced them to 50. Fayemi had 429 SAs/SSAs, Fayose reduced them to 11. Fayemi appointed 735 Ekiti people into the 16 LGS and LCDAs, but Fayose reduced them to 80. Fayemi's cabinet had 43 members, but Fayose reduced them to 21. Fayemi engaged 800 peace corps members with each earning N20,000.00 per month while Fayose has none. Fayemi hired 535 Ekiti people into EKSTMA, each taking N25,000.00 per month, but Fayose reduced them to 35, while in Paramedics, Fayemi engaged160 Ekiti people but Fayose has none. Fayemi paid Senior Citizens (Owo Arugbo) totalling 19,627, each taking N5,000.00 monthly but Fayose has cancelled the scheme. In Youth Volunteers Scheme, Fayemi hired 5,000 youths each taking N10,000.00 monthly while Fayose has none. This is besides Fayose himself disclosing that he discovered 500 ghost workers during staff audit exercise. All workers can confirm these figures in the office of the Accountant General, Ministry of Finance and SSG's office. The question is: how can you have this statistics and Ekiti workers believed for a long time that Fayose is paying the same salary as Fayemi until they now realise that Fayose has been duping them? The truth is that what we have in Ekiti State is a rogue regime that appears to hypnotIse Ekiti workers for a long time, shutting their sense of reasoning before hunger forced them to rediscover themselves again. Does Fayose have money to pay workers with these facts? What is Fayose doing in Dubai every month immediately after collecting federal allocation. Where are the accounts that Fayose keep all sorts of suffocating taxes he has forced on Ekiti people, including poor petty traders? Where does he keep all illegal charges he is forcing the banks to pay for road and electrification projects? Where does he keep all suffocating fines he imposes on Ekiti people on traffic offences? How did he spend N9.6b bailout he collected at the time the governor was owing one month salary? What did he do with the balance after paying just one month salary? Fayose has borrowed N10b for his fly-over project in secret collusion with the House of Assembly without telling Ekiti people and without knowing the terms of repayment. This debt and the N9.6b bailout is what Fayose is mischievously adding to Fayemi's debt but which he will not allow Ekiti people to know. Why did Kayode Oso run away from Fayose's administration? What is Fayose doing with a custom-made safe manufactured in South Africa that he keeps secretly in Afao from which his son recently stole N50m? These are the questions Ekiti workers must begin to ask in demanding for their right to their salaries, as Fayose devises new means of conning Ekiti people again. The Monitors May 26, 2016

APC Petitions Kachikwu, DSS, Demands Probe Of Fayose's Alleged Complicity In Fuel Diversion The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has petitioned the Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachikwu, asking him to probe reports of illegal diversion of fuel allegedly involving Governor Ayodele Fayose. A petition by APC State Secretary, Paul Omotoso, also copied to the Director General of the Department of State Security, Lawal Daura, the party said it was in possession of information linking Fayose with alleged fuel diversion involving some officials of NUPENG to sabotage the Federal Government in its service delivery to Nigerians. "We write to complain on deliberate sabotage mission coordinated by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State working in cahoots with some unscrupulous officials of NUPENG to cause fuel supply disruptions in Ekiti State in order to cause untold hardship for the citizens and blame it on the Federal Government for not doing enough to ameliorate the sufferings of the people while they corruptly enrich themselves," Omotoso said. He said the petition was informed by earlier report allegedly linking the governor with the Ekiti State Petroleum Supply Task Force to breach NNPC's directive to sell fuel at official price. "Instead on ensuring compliance with NNPC's directive to sell at official price, the state task force became a racket machine that was moving from filling station to filling station to encourage dealers to sell above the official price to enable the task force make cuts that were later deposited at the Government House," he explained. He said information at the party's disposal confirmed that daily allocations of fuel to the state were being diverted to other states with the connivance of some NUPENG officials and the governor to sabotage the Federal Government in order to set the people against the President. "For instance, records few days ago showed that 10 trailers of fuel for Ekiti State as demanded in a letter by Fayose were diverted mostly to stations outside the state. "The Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Mrs Dupe Alade, had earlier written for same allocation but her letter to NNPC was stepped down when Fayose used his official position to request for the allocation of fuel to 10 filling stations, many of which do not exist in Ekiti State "The governor's letter was addressed to the Area Manager at Mosimi and minuted to Ore and was processed by the Ore office of NNPC. The Governor in his letter deceived the depot authorities that he would sell the product to Ekiti people at controlled price but ended up diverting same to other states. "The trailers were loaded on Wednesday and Thursday the 20th and 21st of April but the real fuel companies and vendors were prevented from loading until the 10 trailers demanded by the governor left the depot but were diverted to other stations outside Ekiti State causing protests by the real marketers in the state," he said. In a petition that Omotoso also attached a copy of the governor's letter, he explained that the companies in the letter include BOS Oil, Alade Oil and Amsek Filling Station in Ado-Ekiti that were selling above official price. "Other stations that do not exist in Ekiti State but which the governor requested supply for in his letter include Royal Oil, which the governor falsely claimed to exist in Omuo-Ekiti. "The other is Rova Oil filling station, which no longer exists in Ekiti because it has since been sold to another company and its name changed and it is now operating under NNPC. It is selling above NNPC official price. "Bisi Jay Oil is located in Ile-Oluji, Ondo State, but it is one of the companies in the governor's letter to NNPC for fuel supply to Ekiti State, while Ademur Oil in the governor's letter is located in Osun State. "Moson Global is located in Ifon, Ondo State, but received Ekiti allocation at NNPC official price but selling above official price to the public," he added. Omotoso said the

Road rehabilitation, power supply, clean water, and other social infrastructures are all outright benefit of the people of a state in this social contract called democracy and not the duty of anybody either individual or corporate to be enslaved or enforced to either specially pay or contribute for the provision of any of these amenities not even in this era of heavy tax in a state that virtually everybody live on salary out of which none has been paid in the 4 months spent so far in this year. People wrongly singing the praises of any one doing this is not my problem but the concern arises when some people are forced to pay for this and someone else is taking the glory, the heavy tax paid in the first quarter of this year has thrown many into loss in the first quarter while some have decided to close shop there by increasing the cases of unemployment and crime in our society, the very few who could still source for fund from outside the state to sustain their living are denied access to their bank not because the road is under construction but because the Banks have been mandated to contribute 5M each to the construction that the media claim the state government is doing, some of these banks have not declared profit this year and the job of their staff in all categories is on the line, so most of the bank cant afford to add another 5M to the over 2M that has been paid as tax already and the warlord ordered the bulldozing of the entrance culvert of these banks and still counting. The vote for a democratic leader should be a vote for freedom and social justice not a vote for hardship but since that is what the people chose with their thumbs.... GTB, Eco Bank... on the bank road are victims already while others have been billed for the tomorrow and weekend, I just keep wondering what the fate of corporate businesses is in the state. Late last year when the state celebrated the almost the best Teachers' Day in the country, these same bank foot the bill from the teachers uniform to the cars presented to the media coverage, just name it, these same banks closed their year with the heavy debit throwing their account to debit and loss, early in the month, some of the banks were locked for no just reason, schools were shut for undue tax and now entrance to banks are been bulldozed and nobody is saying anything. Just a pity that the known fountain of knowledge is turning to fountain of nonsense and land of honour to land of hoodlums, but I want the concerned warlords and his supporters to know that the whole world is watching with keen interest . Sen. Abiodun Olujimi Sms: A stupid response from a supposed Honourable. I was smiling when I first saw "Our" senators' reply (permit me to use "our" because she is not representing my constituency but am from Ekiti) on a Friend's Timeline on Facebook, I am not too surprised because such uncouth words should be expected from a close ally of Gov. Ayodele Fayose going by the popular saying, "Show me your friend and I will tell you who you are" but I think for the fact that she is talking to younger person cum her constituent not minding the gender (as the gender sound masculine) she should have been responsible for pretense sake. Ekiti State is yet to recover from the banter of TKO Aluko (the PDP erstwhile Sec.Gen Aka Whistleblower) and Lere Olayinka (The shameless defendant of the indefensible) on Channels Tv some weeks over the magical 16:0 Ekiti 2014 election, and while we thought all that was over with the release of a clip of Fayose patting Aluko on his shoulder confirming to him, that Aluko is his political son and all the "war" has been settled and Aluko stating categorically that "it's all about peace, Family issues and notable Nigerians intervening", Just for Aluko to get home and reverse his statements doing more injurious and heartbreaking interview, revealing secrets behind the ongoing overhead bridge in the state capital and many of financial crimes of Fayose which lead to another banter of the erstwhile Controversial "grammarian" speaker of seven Honourable members out of 26 Honourable elected honorable (Hon. Olugbemi). While the image of the state was under critical examination from political analysts of the nation, Another revelation that every election conducted since 2014 through 2015 where either BOUGHT or SOLD came from Sen. Olujimi with her response to one of her constituent read her, "IF you voted it was NOT FREE". To the best of my understanding in English the word "If" is a probability or likelihood word, that she did all possible for her constituent not to vote if he won't be for her (which by a way is also pointing at what TKO said that "those who are not for PDP at the polling booth are either arrested or intimidated out of the area) and that if he voted, he would have been paid as all people who voted were people in support of PDP and were well compensated at the polling booth as also stated by TKO Aluko. Do I still need to say that the Senator's reply is an affirmation of TKO's assertions? Also in her rude response she stated that " I paid every Inch of the way" this is also an affirmation of TKOs word saying Fayose sold the senatorial primaries to the incompetents and am not surprised about this, that's the normal way of PDP (even though it's Democratically abnormal) because even the last presidential primaries , Goodluck Ebele Jonathan bought his way which yet caused another internal problem for the party, Fayose also bought his way, if not an Ayo Arise from Ekiti north or an Omoyeni or Adeyeye from Ekiti south would have defeat him hands down that's is just from the primaries whixh is strictly their party affair. What other stages do you think she would have paid the dues? My suggestions are INEC the Umpire , Police and other security agencies the linesmen, observers/press (spectators) who adjudged her election to be credible but now the real benefactor of the election confirmed she PAID her way, who are they to say all the contraries to her oh! I am almost forgetting THEY WERE PAID. My darling Senator Also didn't just tell us how she got to the Senate, she also made us aware that she knows that virtually all Ekiti youths are Jobless (No thanks to her boss Fayose) she emphatically state in her text read "Get a Job and earn a living", Madam senator I must tell you here that getting a job isn't as easy as your text conveyed it, especially in Ekiti where those that even have Job are yet to be paid for over 4 months, no job creation under your Oga at the top, even those of them(youth) that sells at Oja oba has been dismissed from the market, instead he dismissed the volunteers that H. E Dr John Kayode Fayemi recruited, all he does party crash, eat on the road and build unnecessary and over charged projects (Oja oba market, over head bridge etc), Madam I will plead with you to please direct this your advise to Mr. Governor to create Job for Ekiti youth and help them earn a living. Lastly enough of the shameful display of PDP, Ayo Fayose, Lere Olayinka, senator Abiodun Olujimi and a host of other HoR and HoA Honourables. We have heard enough of the stupidity displayed by them, as both went to House of Assembly and different embassies to show their crass ineptitude. It's not all about what you earn or gain immediately through your political career, it's all about the name of the state, the slogan and the records our heroes past have set for the state. Ekiti is the fountain of knowledge, a land where honour is held with all seriousness and where we are known for academic excellence. Attach to this writeup is our CHARTER OF VALUES , if you can't adhere strictly to THESE values, kindly resign from your offices. We have thousands of capable hands who can handle these offices better than you all but because they don't have the money to "pay every inch" you paid for or because they have a proven integrity that they cherish which won't allow them "pay every inch" just like you did. Finally, enough of the Sidon look attitude of the security agencies of the nation and to the Attorney-General of the Federation. There are revelations on the conduct of Ekiti 2014 election, yet this is another text message confirming that all was not well with the Ekiti 2015 election, yet nothing has, is and will be done. Is Nigeria now a banana Republic? Adesoji Gabriel ANGELGABBY Writes From Umuahia @Angelgabbyshara 07032624530 Angel_gabby4u@yahoo.com

A human rights group, Education Rights Campaign, ERC, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure justice at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU, Umudike, Abia State, in relation to allegations of abuse of office, corruption, nepotism and mismanagement leveled by four staff unions against the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hilary Edeoga. In a PreviousNextA human rights group, Education Rights Campaign, ERC, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure justice at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, MOUAU, Umudike, Abia State, in relation to allegations of abuse of office, corruption, nepotism and mismanagement leveled by four staff unions against the outgoing Vice Chancellor, Prof. Hilary Edeoga. In a statement signed by the group’s National Coordinator and Secretary, respectively, Hassan Soweto and Michael Ogundele, ERC also demanded the immediate release and public disclosure of the report of a fact-finding committee constituted by the Federal Government at the instance of petitions filed by Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Non Academic Staff Union, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, who have consistently opposed the anti-worker and undemocratic policies of the VC. “Since the fact-finding committee finished its work after it visited the university, nothing has been heard about its report. The immediate release and public disclosure of the report is important now, especially considering the fact that Prof. Hilary Edeoga, being the major person in the entire crisis, will conclude his tenure on February 29, 2016. “Before he leaves, the Federal Government owes the university community a duty of revealing whether or not Prof. Edeoga is guilty of the allegations leveled against him and what punishment would be meted to him and any other officials that may have connived with him to perpetrate all the atrocities,” the statement reads. The group claimed the allegations against Prof. Edeoga are weighty and must therefore not be swept under the carpet. http://m.nationalmirroronline.net/article/erc-seeks-justice-at-mouau-over-allegation-of-corruption-by-vc/?query=Mouau&article-id=40167 |
Gbenga Babawibe wrote; Open letter to mr Governor. 46,Ereguru street Ado-Ekiti,Ekiti-State. 28th Feb,2016. The Ekiti State Governor Governor's office,Oke Bareke Ado Ekiti,Ekiti State. Dear sir, Letter of Admonition This letter become imperative owing to the recent political development in Nigeria as it concerns Ekiti, hardly in a day would Ekiti Name won't make headline in all the dailies, one will be happy for such if it all about great feats or outstanding Government policies from the state but the reverse is the case. Why I am I qualify to write this letter? 1) I am a full blooded Ekiti man,I don't have any relation outside Ekiti origin. 2) I am a card carry member of PDP,the party you rode on it's back to become the Governor, not only a member but I was actively involved in your emergence as the Governor that you are today. Having laid this foundation I shall take my time to dish out my piece of advice as someone in the position I enumerated above. Let me start by applauding your uncommon temerity to stand in the gap for our party, you have taken a bold step by voluntarily rendered yourself as the mouth-piece of our party or better still as the new emerged face of the opposition. Having said this,I will like to draw your attention to your numerous vituperation which has almost turned you to a nuisance and that has almost bring our state and our party to disrepute. Mr Governor, I want you to reanalyse most of your criticisms, they always lack substance,if you truly want to assume this position you have put yourself, you will definitely need to be tutored on how to be a productive and constructive critics. Sir,if I may ask,how many books have you read in the last Ten Years? I am very sure that you are not a reader because if you are one it will always reflect in your utterances, that's why you always rely on your intuition in running the state and your reaction is always by impulse. Mr Governor,I will like to inform you that you lack the credentials to be an opposition leader that you are trying to be,not because your office is not up to that nor your age but the intelligence, character and mental magnitude to be an opposition leader is far from you sir. Come to think of it, how are you running the little state at your disposal? You that you are a tyrant, maximum ruler and a demagogue cannot concentrate on the pebbles in Buhari's eyes and leave the log of wood in your own eyes.i would have love it if you truly Capable and merit the role you are trying to play in the present Nigeria situation.Sir, what legacy are you leaving behind that can truly stand the test of time, is it all these your paraga and agbojedi type of philosophy that will make you an opposition leader or the mouth-piece of a party like PDP in such a time as this? We have men with finesse in PDP who are highly cerebral, who will discuss issues without recourse to name calling, that APC were doing that to the former President does not mean that we too will turn to Bolekaja opposition that you are providing. Mr Governor, enough of the insults you had drawn to our party and the state, those topics you know nothing about that you want to be taking credit on will only bring more trouble than the cheap popularity you wanted to get from it. You may be thinking people are applauding you, most of the time people sees you as mere Ali Baba or Dorgons of this world. Please, enough of this mud dragging of the exalted position you are occupying and the good name Ekiti has earned for itself without any contribution from you in anyway. Please sir, allow the capable hands and people with impeccable credentials to handle our public relations and our positions on National issues. It's more than opening mouth rather it required offering alternative idea to every criticised position of the Government. The PDP needs to call you to order so that you don't bugle our chance with this your style. Finally, this is my candid advice,if you can make use of them it will do you good and the people of Ekiti,no one is curtailing your fundamental right of expression but what we asking for is decorum because you are not fit for what you are doing. Even the PDP Governors forum chairman you are eyeing will not be given to a man like you and it's a minus for us in Ekiti. Sir,no hard feelings, enough word is for the wise. Thank you for your time. Yours faithfully, Gbenga Babawibe |

Fayose Stokes Fire Of Community Strife, Tears Olukere's Portraits, As Rival Groups Unleash Mayhem On Ikere As if under spell, Governor Ayodele Fayose this evening went berserk in an act of street brawl to stoke fire of community discord, setting rival groups against each other over destruction of Olukere's portraits strategically displayed in Ikere-Ekiti. Eyewitnesses said trouble started when Fayose abruptly stopped his convoy and alighted from his vehicle and went straight to where the portraits of Olukere of Ikere were displayed and personally destroyed them. Residents watched in disbelief as the governor moved from one portrait to to other, destroying them in the full glare of the residents. Anger boiled over in a community sharply divided over the Obaship tussle between Ogoga of Ikere and Olukere of Ikere. Within minutes, Olukere's supporters in their hundreds stormed the town and built bonfires around Post Office area stretching to Akure road. Motorists made detours, as travellers got stuck in the burst of mayhem while several others took streets roads to link the major road far away from the theatre of war. Ogoga is reported to be Fayose's acolyte, and it is believed that the governor played a prominent role to ensure his emergence as the Ogoga of Ikere even when the matter was still a subject of heated confusion over tradition and right to the throne. Till late this evening, the town is still tense and no one knows when the rage fired by the governor's reckless conduct will subside. THE MONITORS 10/2/16 |
NON-PAYMENT OF OUR PARENTS SALARIES: Despite receiving uptodate allocations, Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose has refused to pay our parents salaries, thereby delaying the school fees payment of many of our students. Fayose has mischievously been deceiving Ekiti people, covering his ineptitude with the deceit that he has been servicing the debt incurred by his predecessor. We, without fear deem it imperative to tell all Ekiti people that Fayose is only feeding on our ignorance and it is high time we ask him questions on what he has been doing with our allocations. . We shall not hesitate to storm the city of Ado-Ekiti with our harmless comrades and provide succor to the almost gone Ekiti educational heritage . We shall be responsible for the blocking of major roads leading to Ado and we shall stop the economic and social activities within the state before unanimously passing a vote of no confidence in Governor Peter Ayodele Fayose leadership . We jointly say "education is a right not a privilege and we shall not turn a crocodile eye towards the poor welfare state of the education in the state. . GOVERNOR PETER AYODELE FAYOSE HAS AGAIN DECEIVED EKITI STATE STUDENTS WITH HIS FAKE BURSARY FORMS . Gentlemen of the press: . Today, we have come together as a forces united in love, peace and harmony to fight a noble cause greater than any interest of the wicked and callous set of people to inflict their devilish acts on students which we see as inhumane, barbaric and an act of promoting despotism in our society which is nothing but a great threat to our future as youth of this great nation. . "The first casualty when war comes is the truth." U.S. Senator Hiram Johnson, 1917 . We are fully aware of the potentials of Fayose dogs in the media world and their ability to misrepresent an entity to suit their horror taste which we will never give room for. The ability of Fayose media aides to paint us as devils and to inform the world how our intolerance leads to actions that gives us a bad image is not new neither do we see it as something incredible. . "Often the oppressor goes along unaware of the evil involved in his oppression so long as the oppressed accepts it. " Martin Luther King, Jr. . It is no longer news that FESSU is the most powerful students' force representing the interest of all Ekiti indigenous students throughout the world and our historical records has shown beyond reasonable doubts our technicality in organizing a powerful protest that sets to put anyone at the helms of affairs in the State on his/her toes as at when it is necessary . Our belief is that any governor that sees beyond the fanfares surrounding his exalted office supposed to have a student/youth oriented agenda where good principles, character and justice with equal opportunities should be preached but reverse is the case in Ekiti State and we, as the potential leaders of today are ready to make things right. . "We who have a voice should speak for the voiceless" Archbishop Oscar Romero of El Salvador . Since justice too long delayed is equally a justice denied, the students under the aegis of Federation of Ekiti State students Union want to expressly stated that the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Peter Ayodele Fayose should be battle ready for the aluta forces of Ekiti Students as we've set to unanimously pass a vote of no confidence in his leadership. . The following are few of the many sin of Governor Fayose . 1. BURSARY: Governor Fayose in his machiavelian attitudes deceived Ekiti State students by issuing fake bursary form out to score cheap political popularity. We as the body representing the students had on many occasions raised alarm on the ingenuity of the bursary form as it was neither stamped nor numbered, yet, the Governor refused to agree to terms which will make the form accessible to most Ekiti students. It is disheartening that despite the incoviniency the collection of the form brought to the students, yet, a single kobo has not been paid since last year. . 2. PRIVATIZATION OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS: May this State never again experience the setback we've recorded so far in Ekiti State educational sector under the present administration. Fayose leadership has done everything possible to crumble the legacies his predecessors has laid in the educational sector of the State as public schools pupils are now forced out of the school to pay an outrageous tuition while the Free WAEC/NECO registration policy for the SS3 students has been abolished. . It is a shameful act and we consider it as an act of wickedness and a callous means of generating income that Governor Fayose can refused to take responsibility for the payment of WAEC Fees of secondary school students which is the only benefit they can have from the state government in terms of education. . It is never new to us as student leaders but it was strange that the government can belittle herself and aggravated her crime and wickedness to the future leaders of tomorrow. . Prior to his involvement in politics, Dr Fayemi was Director of the Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD), a research and training institution dedicated to the study and promotion of democratic development, peace-building and human security in Africa. He attended Christ’s School, Ado Ekiti for his secondary education, Federal School of Arts and Science, Ondo for his Higher School Certificate (HSC) and received degrees in History, Politics and International Relations from the Universities of Lagos and Ife in Nigeria. He bagged his Doctorate in War Studies from King’s College, University of London, England. Prior to heading the CDD, Dr. Fayemi worked as a lecturer, journalist, researcher and Strategy Development Adviser in Nigeria and the United Kingdom. As a prominent leader of the Nigerian opposition to military rule in exile, he was responsible for the founding and management of the opposition radios – Radio Freedom, Radio Democracy International & Radio Kudirat and played a crucial role in the opposition’s diplomatic engagements in exile. The historic concession speech he made shortly after he lost the 2014 gubernatorial election in inexplicable circumstances is regarded as one of his notable legacies. He is also credited for superintending over the presidential primaries of the ruling APC in December 2014 which is widely adjudged as the most transparent and credible presidential primaries election in Nigeria’s fourth republic. During his tenure as Governor of Ekiti State, Dr. Fayemi pioneered several governance and accountability initiatives in Healthcare, Education, Infrastructure Development, Women’s Empowerment and Community Development that propelled Ekiti State to the top echelon of the development matrix at the sub-national level. The state was recognized severally both locally and internationally for these giant strides. His administration instituted a social security benefit scheme – the first of its type in any state in Nigeria. The scheme while operational in the state covered over 25,000 indigent senior citizens. For his pioneering and leadership roles, he was given several awards and recognition including the Leadership Newspaper’s Governor of the Year Award, 2012; the Zik’s Prize in Leadership (Good Governance) Award in 2013; Champion Newspapers Governor of the Year award in 2014. Above all, JKF, as he is fondly called is a product of grace. This is evident in his life trajectory and the manner he overcomes every adversity on his path to greatness. It is this grace that defines and shapes his life right from his teenage years, when he served as an altar boy in the Catholic Church, that continues to define his upward journey on the political ladder. More than anything, it is this special grace -which comes only from above -that is the focus of celebration today as JKF turns 51. From the four corners of the country and beyond come fifty and one cheers for this devoted father and husband; a reputable administrator, innovator, democrat and change agent, who remains a shining example to the younger generation in the areas of leadership, scholarship, social justice and political tolerance. Contd... and Lagos States. In achieving budget transparency for the state, Fayemi’s first major step was to enthrone a culture of transparency in the state. A few months after he assumed office as governor, the state Assembly passed into law the Freedom of Information Act. This ensured that government business was done in the most transparent manner. Right from his days as a student union activist, to the era of pro-democratic activism, to his participation in partisan politics, Fayemi’s highly visible signature remains his integrity. “The only thing I came into government with is my integrity”, is perhaps his most common phrase. He uses every opportunity to demonstrate that an activist in government can make a difference. In all his public assignments he continues to show, through proven results, that he is a builder of a new dawn, working with imagination, insight and boldness. He is a social innovator and change agent who is able to motivate people with good ideas for optimal productivity. When he declared that repositioning the solid minerals sector to meet President Muhammodu Buhari’s aspiration was achievable. It is not because he does not recognise that the sector has its peculiar problems. It is simply because of his avowed belief that with the right mix of dedication, innovation and putting in place the right structure, it would be achieved. Born in Ibadan, Oyo State on February 9, 1965, Dr Kayode Fayemi is a native of Isan-Ekiti in Oye Local Government of Ekiti State. He was inaugurated as Minister of Solid Minerals Development on November 11, 2015. He was Governor of Ekiti State from October 2010 to October 2014. |
Fayemi’s day of 51 solid cheers By Olayinka Oyebode The recent widely reported declaration by the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dr Kayode Fayemi, that states could exploit mineral resources in their domains with the attendant positive response from states has, no doubt, opened another chapter in the federal government-states relationship. In the last one month, I have stumbled on a few group discussions on the declaration, which many see as a welcome development in the quest by the states to shore up their revenue profiles in the face of a dwindling oil price. In one of such discussions, the emphasis was on the proviso which the minister added to the declaration: that such mining activities should be done in line with the laid down laws. “It has to be done within the provision of the law. Once you do it within the law, the government will at least get royalties from you (states), get taxes paid legitimately, have people employed in this area. This achieve our objectives of alternative revenue generation for the country and job creation for our people”, Dr Fayemi was quoted. The development, seen by many as novel, would no doubt provide the needed lift for many of the states when it is eventually firmed up. Aside the states, many stakeholders are also excited by the plan which will see states participating in mining through partnership and joint ventures. Whereas the new position has the backings of the law as noted by Dr Fayemi, what observers however find a bit curious is why it was never enunciated by previous regimes. And that is vintage Fayemi. He embraces assignments with every sense of responsibility and pursues set goals with a huge dose of vigour, spiced with youthful gusto. To him the rule of law is paramount, just as social justice is an essential ingredient for socio-political and economic development/empowerment. He believes every policy must be a product of thorough process with the concomitant advantage for the majority. To him, every assignment must be discharged with precision and must come with its added value to national development and must of necessity bring succour to the people. Whereas the constitution gives the federal government exclusive right to explore minerals. But, as an innovator, Fayemi knows that it would be difficult for the federal government to do that successfully without collaboration with the states. Hence the need to put in place a mutually beneficial arrangement. Other plans being put in place by Fayemi to revolutionalise the solid minerals sector include upgrading the Mining Cadastre Office and the Mines Inspectorate Directorate; establishment of Mines Police; automation of the mining rights/titles; institutional support to artisanal and small scale miners for the purpose of integrating them into the formal economy. Others include building of bankable geosciences data; enforcement of the “use it or lose it” licence provision of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2007 ; external audit of revenue receipts as well as guaranteeing the integrity of mining licence. He believes that the huge investments that will boost the fortunes of the sector would come when the right foundation is laid and investors confidence are restored. For Fayemi, the desire to always think outside the box in order to provide solution and achieve set goals have remained the hallmark of his public service engagements. In December 2015, clearly one year and two months after he had left office as governor of Ekiti State, the administration he led was recognised as one with the most transparent budget model among the 36 states in the country. The Civil Resource Development and Documentation Centre (CIRDDOC) organisers of the award, had rated Ekiti State budget under him as being the one with the most transparent process. The survey was done with data collected in 2014. In the ‘Transparency Index 2015’, of the survey, Ekiti scored 79 – the highest score on the index ahead of Cross Rivers...
