I can't think of any gadgets you'll need that you can't get here for cheaper. For me, the most valuable things are authentic naija food. I've never been able to find quality garri, they basically sell 'chaff' garri for like 10 bucks per 4 cups or something that crazy. So garri, yam, powdered milk, stock fish maybe (but I don't know how to cook, so my mom just brings it for herself)...things like that.

Trust me, you'll miss niaja food.

Actually, it makes the most sense because I got some pretty good brand ones on summer sale online for less than £40. Prices will go back up before fall. Shipping from the UK is pretty cheap, also I can bring them without having extra luggage. I put all that into consideration.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean. What makes sense?. Nobody buys clothes from the UK here because they are so cheap and the shipping is not worth it. Sometimes if I'm in Niagara I go to Buffalo(US) and buy them for cheaper and just drive across with them. My sister chose to live in niaja for the last 2 yrs, she does most of her clothes and shoes shopping when she comes to Canada. It's simply cheaper for the quality. Some of my relatives even get my lady to buy clothes for them throughout the yr when they are on sale and when they come to visit, they just take a whole luggage back to naija for themselves.

That shoe that I bought for 120 was a brand name and will cost more in Nigeria. I know this because whenever I visit naija my friends offer my double the price of what I pay for my clothing and shoes to have them. When it comes to winter clothes, they don't import as much we get here because of the weather, so you'll have to pay a premium for it the ones they import or buy knockoffs. You can buy winter shoes for 20 bucks at value village/Salvation Army here if you want. Your first winter shoe will not be 150, it'll take atleast a winter to know what you like/need.

You also have no idea of what type you want till you get here. Some winter are colder than others and you do not know what your tolerance for the cold till your in the winter. I've lived here for most of my life and I have several winter jackets and they are all different. You're not gonna pack all of them and bring them here, it'll be your entire luggage. A good thick winter jacket will take up atleast a quarter of your luggage. Use that space to pack garri, yams or something that is honestly worth more.

I'm not sure if you are joking or serious but you can find affordable clothing here. Buying winter clothes in naija and coming here will make no sense and you'll end up paying more. You can find winter boots for less than 100 bucks, you just gotta shop around at the right time. If you want designer boots you'll have to pay more. I found winter boots for 40 bucks 3 yrs ago. Bought another for 120 last winter.

Look at this: we know black bodies generally absorb more sunlight. We also know there is more sunlight in Africa than say Europe and America. Fair enough, maybe it's just among my field, my circle and my mentors. I just think being an engineer in the energy industry (and a Canadian citizen) , there are so many other certifications and educational routes I could take that'll cost me less money, less time and less workload and will impact my pay check positively almost immediately. I feel MBA has more weight among people in other field than it does ion ours, at least earlier in your career. I might consider it when I'm way older.

I don't have an MBA though, so you know what doors it has potentially opened for you better than I do. I'm weird like that sometimes.

Hey, you can still do your MBA. I personally think it's not worth the price of what you pay for it but that's my opinion. MBA used to be hot back in the day but I don't think it's currently the case.

Engineering is not the only thing booming in Canada. Those of us with Nigerian roots just get cohersed into that stream at an early age.

Pharmacy is different from Pharmacology. The requirement for a post graduate degree in Pharmacology is usually BSc in Pharmacology, Toxicology, Physiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry e.t.c

If you don't end up reapplying for the student route right away, I'd advise you to try and travel as much as possible before your next application. To me that history matters, even people like team12 that is going for post grad, I noticed she had a noticeable travel history aswell.

This will be hard to even get admission. Only a few school offer pharmacy and those schools get a lot of applications, I have a cpl of friends in pharmacy school. So make sure her grades and/or experience are outstanding.

Hey, I do not understand the naija gpa scale. What program did you apply for to in college and what will you like to apply for in university. It depends on those things. From a visa point of view, I'm not quite sure the ramifications, I, guessing it shouldn't be a big hassle though.

There is a cause for worry cause I just read it up. They have divided their citizenship into two: first rate and second rate. The second rate is a low class citizenship and it has a lot of downside. I encourage everyone to read it before deciding to go to Canada. Just Google C-24. It's not nice at all. I think aussie is officially on my mind now.

Don't get bent out of shape about this bill. It's a bill that got recently passed by a conservative govt that will probably loose the next election and that bill will probably get challenged at the supreme court.

Also this is only used for specific cases.

I have two admission letters and financial assistance, MUN (Oil and Gas Engineering) with 15,500 Canadian dollars yearly and Uni of Alberta (Engineering Management) with 22,000 dollars. i applied with MUN before thereafter i got my offer letter from Ualberta. MUN offer is WITHOUT condition, but UAlberta is WITH condition, which I can meet-original certificate and official transcript. I have choose UAlberta based on work potential, but my question basically is which of the offer letter will i applied with now? one is without condition-MUN and one is with condition-UAlberta? Personal SOA-3m, landed properties, pension, married (my home tie). I will appreciate advice from the house

I'm not basing this on anything in particular but I would go with UofA just because it has a bigger name plus I personally think Engineering Management is probably a better career route.

On the other hand though, manitoba is a smaller province so they might be accepting more people there.

I am a Hong Kong student and just won a full cover scholarship (as HKD1,600,000 in tatal) to study in UofT, Canada.
I have submitted everything with the first application.
And the Embassy was rejected me as my personal assets/ financial status is not satisfied.

Actually, my mother was retired for few years, and my bank is almost empty.
I thought the Visa Officer will approve my application as I had provided the Scholarship document and admission letter from UofT before.
However...they just denied me

What can I do now?
Will they approve my reapply if I ask the Charitable Trust transfers 2 years amount (full tuition fee, accommodation , living expenses) to my bank acc?

I'm curious, what did you apply for at UofT that you got such a massive scholarship? I can't think of any program that cost almost $250k.

Are you a citizen or at least a PR? If you are not, I don't think there is anything special you have to do, I think they just have to apply for visa like everyone else.

I don't think you can, most countries demand that you have to apply from your home country. I tried applying for a tourist Ghana visa from naija and when I called, they demanded that the visa must be applied for Canada if it's on a Canadian passport.

I've heard of some journalist applying for visa while on the road though. I'm not sure if they are considered a special case, you can always call/email immigration Canada and ask.

The GDP of California alone is greater than that of the whole of Canada. There are more jobs in the US so you see more Canadians heading south. I work in the Energy service industry and 99% of non reusable fluids, tools, equipment and machinery we use are imported from the US. Can you even imagine Canada without Walmart, the Canadian energy industry without General Electric Waukesha machines, Cummins diesel engines, Caterpillar gas engines, Dresser Rands rotating equipments, Endyn compressors, Ford f150's e.t.c , I can't even imgaine what the economy of Canada would even look like without the Alberta Oil sands.
Also more Canadians go to the US to shop, stuffs are cheaper in the US (from clothes, to cigarette, toothpaste, to booze e.t.c). More Canadians go to the US on holiday. Hardly would you find an american coming to Canada for holiday, some even still believe we live in igloos.
Hence there are more people travelling south than those coming North which leads to more entry denial...This topic is open to debate though so I might still be wrong.

I agree with you if you say more Canadians travel up north than the other way around. Canadians love to travel, when ever I go on vacation I see way more Canadians than Americans for sure. Now the reason why most people get denied both ways are for criminal records or coming to work without a permit. Even if we imagine that both country has an equal percentage of people with criminal records ( I would guess that Canada probably has less), it's just such a huge number of people to thing that the U.S. Wouldn't come out on top. Now I'm really curious to see what that figure really is. We are just guessing.

My original questions though was what % of people that get their Canadian PR and then get denied citizenship. I'm curious, I personally have never met one.

Yes...some foreign oil workers with PR have been denied citizenship. Some even denied renewal of their PR. It's all about meeting the residency requirement.
I have also seen Americans denied entry into Canada and vice versa. But there are lot more Canadians being denied entry into the US. All you need to do is watch the US customs and border protection TV series.
Canadian citizenship can be revoked too. Over 500 people were sent notices last year.

Highly doubt this is true, more Americans are denied entry into canada than the other way around. American has 320 million ppl, Canada only has. Has 30+ mil, that would make no sense by numbers alone. Don't get get your stats from TV shows, when cross I see more U.S. Being denied entry than Canadians.

Not meeting the basic requirements is an obvious refusal, I was asking about being refused vaguely like they do for visa for naija.

I know your passport could be cancelled on very special cases, like being a part of a group that is at war with Canada and things like that. The conservative govt passed that bill a couple of hrs ago.

I think the topic has been settled but just for the record, Canadian citizens don't need to get a visa to go to the states and vice versa. Just show your passport and drive or fly through, they don't even stamp it. I'm going to drive up to buffalo this weekend, and it takes me a couple of seconds to cross the border. If you have a US visa with a Nigerian passport you have to stop, get stamped and pay a fee. My aunt was down here in December and she had a US Visa, it took us about an hr to go through the process for them. They didnt really hassle them, they just made them pay some admin fees.

Has anyone heard of a PR being denied citizenship, I'm just curious.
