Education / Re: Difference In Mentality Of Vocational Students & Academic Students by spendogram: 3:05pm On Jan 08, 2014
This is a very important topic.
The labor market like every other market is governed by the laws of demand and supply. Your ability to recognize where the demand is and adapting yourself to supply accordingly is the key to success. If you are stuck with the mentality of "I am a lawyer.So, I must practice my profession" you are not likely to fit in when the demand for lawyers drop drastically. And hey, it happens in any profession or skill type.

The demand pattern for skills is shaped by factors beyond what any individual can control. A new invention, changing weather patterns, changing demographics, government policies,etc are enough to kill the demand for a skill that is currently fetching lots of money. E.g ability to transcribe Morse Codes was a money spinner until when the telephone and other electronic gadgets gained prominence. Knowing where the demand is and adapting (learning new skills) on the go is a skill that is not taught in schools. You must learn it from the school of hard knocks.

Another hypothetical example within auto mechanic vocational job is this :

You are very good at repairing motor bikes and you are making lots of money because of the traffic situation in Lagos as most people prefer to take bikes to get to their destination on time. Lagos state government then bans bikes. The question is will you become a jobless bike repairer and keep wishing/crying that they un-ban it or will you learn new skills required to repair say tricycles?

My main point is that it is not Academic Vs Vocational. It is more like Skill Set Vs Skill set. What skill set are you acquiring? What does the laws of demand and supply say about it now and in the near future?

Also, i think Muda Lawal and Kanu Nwankwo should have their images on our postage stamps. These are people who have consistently shown dedication to serving Nigeria. 86caps no be joke ooo.

Hmmm.It seems many of you guy's can not understand how good a move this is. As born2fuck has pointed out earlier,the law applies only to vehicles used for commercial purposes. Why should you use your vehicle continuously for commercial purposes in my state if it carries another state's plate.What many of you are advocating is what has kept the whole country backward since long ago i.e less developed zones/regions/states/whatever they are called not allowing others to develop. You think it is wise to wish Nigeria as a whole develop at the same pace? That is just mere wishful thinking. Some places will always be quicker to produce leaders who can see further into the future than others.

FG does not seem to have control over activities within its territory but Lagos wants to. There is nothing wrong with that.This is a good move from the Lagos State Government. Ensuring that individuals behind ANY activity is traceable to a database is the simple rule of modern governance.
Webmasters / Re: Broke Professional Webmaster: Should I Change Career? by spendogram: 11:17am On Sep 20, 2012
Thank you all for the interesting discourse. I will like to add that this is not peculiar to web development. It seems it is a disease with engineering or all creative technical works. Most times those in such fields focus too much on their creative technical skills and forget the people and business skills. If you set out to be a web developer why cry that you are not making the kind of money that a business man should make? Fact is that for those in creative technical jobs to succeed in business they will have to partner with other people in other fields who work better at making things work together. It is not just about your creative technical skills.

You should note that the method is already being used to a great degree of success in the music industry. Some people are good at song writing, some are good at singing,some are good at producing, some at selling and some at managing time,etc They all come together to give us our favorite songs. How much do you think a freelance musician will make?

miredia: What kobojunkie described is identified as peace. Happiness is subtle bustling. Peace is tranquil. Man is rarely or almost never happy in the midst of turmoil but can be at peace even in the most boisterous circumstances of life. Do not mistake happiness for peace.

Thank you so much. That has been my exact point all along.I just love your summary.
Literature / Re: -- by spendogram: 12:07pm On Sep 05, 2012
@kobojunkie,
Kobojunkie:

If you read up all religious literature that speaks to you of happiness, you will find that one thing they all have in common is that in describing/defining happiness, you will find that each literary work does not attempt to tie happiness to material world or to any circumstance in the lives of the characters in the books. Each time happiness is addressed it is described as coming from within the persons.
I can tell you that what you are doing is what many people do, conclude that what you have never experienced is impractically even before really experiencing it. Happiness has absolutely nothing to do with accepting fate. On the contrary it is what you need to believe your current situation is just a phase.

The only source of happiness you need is yourself. It comes from within.

Why in the world would you measure what comes from within you? I mean do you measure your hunger index? Do you measure your breathing index? Your love index? I just do not see the gain in engaging in such vain exercise.

I don't think you should compare your claim that you measure your happiness index with peoples paranoid delusions. That does not fit anywhere in this discussion.

That you keep bringing up fate when talking of happiness, leads me to believe you probably have never experienced true happiness . . what you have experienced is likely what the fickle emotions that are tied, again, to material world. I don't it is reasonable to make CONCLUSIVE statements of what you are obviously not experienced in.

Which religion?Did you not read that God was unhappy when he saw how ungodly human behaviors became? Did you not read that God was happy when Noah offered a sacrifice after the flood and then decided never again to completely wipe off the human race? Did those emotions not emanate from the situations at the time? I have used God so that you can see that your theory does not have any basis even in the Abrahamic religions. Now, which character in any religion had his /her happiness unchanged in all situations. Please give examples if you can find one.I will like us to examine such together.

Truly, I agree that that happiness comes from within.However,it is dependent on your interaction with the world.

YOU do not see the gain in engaging in such measurements but some other humans do in fact believe that it should be measured.In fact some other stuffs that are much more hideous are also measured.It is all about whether you believe in systematization or not. Those of us who believe in systematization believe we are happier than those who don't.We in fact believe that those who shy away from it are like ostriches burying their heads in the sands. Even in religion it is always easier to say "i believe in God". But you see that you are always required to do things outside mere assertions to "prove" it.

I am happily married and it will remain so because I can easily hear the alarm if a threshold is about to be breached.

My observation:
You think certain things are too hideous to be measured. I think everything can be systematized.

Kobojunkie:
What you describe above is not true happiness, but a sense of accomplishment, not to be confused with happiness. Also, it is possible to be happy even when you have to depend on others for 24/7 for your survival. True happiness transcends whatever situation you find yourself in, in life.
While

While the bolded sounds nice. It doesn't work so practically. Accepting your fate is not the same as being happy. Also,you may have overlooked that I mentioned "If all other things remain the same." True,you may be happy even if you depend on others 24/7 but the happiness is derived from other sources.Such sources are not necessarily material.In some cases it may just be hope of a good afterlife. Whichever way you look at it it is always about what you think you are getting out of life.

You have never felt the need to measure your happiness. Some people too have never felt the need to mention how many children they have. They say "You don't count children for their parents". In my opinion, everything is measurable so long we have attained the level of civilization and have the right technologies to do so.

Importantly,there is no human being whose happiness remains the same irrespective of the situation. Some people just chose to accept their fate with a hope that in the future life or death will bring higher happiness. Others have their happiness level drop so much and so fast that they commit suicide as they feel life isn't worth living anymore.

It is all about the culture. Our culture says "to show that you are a strong leader make yourself inaccessible to the people you are leading. The more inaccessible you are, the better". The culture of the west says "to show that you are a good leader make yourself accessible to the people you are leading. The more accessible, the better."
Literature / Re: -- by spendogram: 8:58am On Sep 04, 2012
@Kobo,
truly,no one size fits all. However, there are certain things that can instantly increase or reduce happiness. e.g a person that can not afford to feed himself but who must depend on others about 5 out of 7 days in a week will have his happiness increased if other things in his life remain the same and in addition he can now feed himself at least 6 out of 7 days. Furthermore we can also take an example of a person who suddenly suffers a life threatening disease. He will have his happiness temporarily reduced. The only way to bring his level of happiness up is to increase some other things that also give him happiness. Another example: If you move from an environment where there is gross insecurity to an environment where he feels safe,if all other things remain the same you will notice that your happiness level will increase.

Some years back I actually made for myself a happiness index. I measure myself against it so as to know when I am derailing.Also, to find ways of increasing each of the factors therein.

@OP,
Feeling that you are in a secure environment is not on your list.
Romance / Re: Can Lust Lead To Love?? ... by spendogram: 9:51am On Sep 03, 2012
Lust is wanting to have it because the package is attractive. Love is wanting to have it after you have gone beyond the package and interacted with the content.

Anything that will bring you into interacting with the content can lead to love. Lust,hatred,friendship,etc can all lead to love but most of the time they don't because people back off once they start seeing that the content is not as attractive as the package.

The type of love that last and last and last is when you see that the content is much better than the package.

Politics / Re: Price Of Bread In Lagos To Be Increased By 20% by spendogram: 12:47pm On Aug 31, 2012
The inflation rate has been in double digits for long. Everything is affected and that includes the price of bread. What we really need is a high purchasing power. That won't happen if there are no jobs. So, the government needs to create policies and frameworks that will help local companies to flourish against foreign competitors that have huge financial muscles. Look at China. Baidu is the most popular search engine because the government made deliberate policies to protect it from strong foreign competitors like google. Look at Europe and America, the manufacturing sector has virtually collapsed because their governments did not protect their local companies and products from cheaper Chinese products. Hence, their increasing unemployment rate.
Family / Re: Dealing With A Child's Destructive Behaviour? by spendogram: 3:28pm On Aug 30, 2012
@OP,
There is nothing serious about what your kid is doing. However, you must find a way to make him stop since you say he is 6 years old.

What causes it is that your son has found that his destructive acts easily gets your attention.Children need attention and will do what it takes to get it.What to do is that you should overlook his destructive acts for least two weeks.Just do like you didn't even see what he did. You will see he will find other means to get your attention. Same goes for children of your son's age who just cry out unnecessarily.

I hope it helps.
Politics / Re: State Police Is Inevitable - ACN by spendogram: 1:20pm On Aug 30, 2012
May be some states are not ripe for state police. May be they are not ripe to even become states in the first place. But we should bear in mind is that once you are called a state you should have machinery to secure the lives and properties of the residents of that state. Nigeria's inefficiency stems from its over-centralization. If a business were this centralized should we expect it to run profitably?No way.

In reality, if possible, some states should actually be merged because they are not self sufficient and can not even sustain themselves. They always need the Federal Government to provide them everything (including police). Why should they be states in the first place? If it is a business would you create a branch that can not sustain itself? And continue to retain and sustain it decades after decades? The branches are supposed to be self sufficient and are suppose to contribute to the center and not the other way round.
