@ToH: Kings is just a re-interpretation of 'Kings' the historical book.

@max: In CR, the relationship was true to type. 'Mother-ing' a '00'? for whatever reason doesn't come in. When in Goldfinger, Jill Masters is painted gold to death, there was no hand-holding and that is a much IMO true to type reaction from a superior in a covert organisation. And that was what the problem with a female 'M' when Judy Dench was first cast and that was why she clearly outlined that she had no problems sending a man to die and she wouldn't be 'soft'. If it added an extra-dimension to the M-Bond dynamic it would be good to see but as it is right now, it's a plot device that I find out of turn.

Best Bond? methinks, a scottish brogue is missing in that statement. grin

Connery fits the books more because he looks attractive and evil, Craig is more like a bouncer-look, no smoothness, all grit.

Una talk well; me I'm more concerned about how that ties into the Deadpool movie.

P.S. Wolverine's beenn halved before and he still 'Voltron'-ed himself back together again.

and I doubt it but was it that Lagos is supposed to have been a stand-in for Black Panther's native land? As in Wakanda?

TV/Movies › Nigeria On U.s. Tv by spikyn(op): 6:20pm On Apr 24, 2009
Once started a thread on Nigeria being portrayed in US movies and on TV, this is like in that vein.

I just recently watched Castle (a pretty potential-laden new TV show that you should at least check out), and the episode was about Nigerians, juju (called voodoo in the episode) and immigration issues.\

Aldis Hodge (recently of Leverage - another fine show) did the most ridiculous Nigerian accent I have ever heard. Anyway it had Nigerians in focus and had several 'Nigerian' characters including a 'killer' who kills people with and for 'jazz'. Add that the 'Wolverine Origins' mission to Naija, I think I've seen enough Naija portrayals to last me the rest of this year,

See, vesc I didn't even mention Frank Capra once!

And in the Bourne vs Bond thing, Bourne wins! Fatality!!

@max: One major problem with QoS was that as you pointed out and as portrayed in the earlier Bond movies and mostly underlined in 'Goldfinger', Bond is a civil servant. A 'nothing' if you will but in QoS, the 'relationship/banter' between Bond and M was so blaise that they might as well have been mates or maybe M even reports to Bond. Not Ian Fleming's Bond and definitely no boss/subordinate relationship is portrayed with any consistency and coherence in QoS.

Jason Bourne doesn't even know the full extent of his capabilities. I know 1-on-1, he'll kill Bond and if you take the 'train-station' scene in Ultimatum, I dare all the Bonds working together to pull that off.

I miss 'Third Eye' (Olu Jacobs/Yomi Adeyemi-Wilson)

On some levels, I'd rather the kids today had more educational tv definitely not 24hours sha.

I wonder if NTA know how much money they'd make if they make their archives available.
TV/Movies › Re: Hollywood: Favourite Movies, Actors and Awards. Tinseltown reviews & Gossip by spikyn: 8:15pm On Apr 16, 2009
Based on all the furor over Roger Friedman reviewing 'Wolverine' and getting fired, I expect the final cut of the movie to be very different. Still, the mini-review I'll post is:

If you like/liked the X-Men trilogy, you'd be satisfied with 'Wolverine Origins'. It is closer in tone and even style to X-2, which I consider the best chapter of the three and even has a remake/re-imagining of one the 'Wow!!' scenes in X-2. The pacing is brisk and there are lotsa cameos and 'fan in-jokes'. On the Lagos, Nigeria part; it was Igbo being spoken (kinda like in 'Ace Ventura 2'-sense) and they had 'Colonel Dubaku' as the head honcho (24 Season 7 fans/watchers know him!). It mainly consisted of aerial scenes, a building scene and a few outdoor scenes though chances are you'll be too busy trying to process the 'efizi-ies' to complain.

It has a lotta set-pieces for action/slo-mo and a few bombastic scenes as well that finally show the Wolverine of the comics come to life. The childhood-backstory has changed a bit from the comic-line as it does alter Sabretooth's origin a bit while aligning to the overall comic-'verse. I'm trying to keep from leaking storyline details but I can tell you that Gambit does indeed features as well as Emma Frost, the Blob and some very familiar X-Men.

The movie is not all action-y as it tries to add emotional depth but how that works out to the viewer will largely be dependent on how attached you get to . . . . either way if you're a X-Men fan you could probably guess most of it though the path the movie-makers take is no big cop-out.

Tempted to do like Vesc and edit a list and post for the noms. . . . .

I've seen it. Not bad at all, if you take it in the light of the X-Men movie annals. Had some really neat tie-ins and fan/crowd-pleasing moments. . . . . and enough mad cameos.

Hmmmm. For Grammys sha I really didn't expect a Coldplay sweep anyway but it's nice to know they had a chance. I guess their problem is that U2 existed and still exists.

Finally saw Slumdog Millionaire yesterday. Nice. That makes 3 Danny Boyle films that have risen to the top of my estimations.

vesc, you're into Katt Williams? Did you get the oldies you wanted? Did you go through the Marvel/DC skits?

Be you.
TV/Movies › Re: Movies With Unpredictable Endings by spikyn: 2:10pm On Mar 23, 2009
'Unknown' with Jim Caviezel had a slightly off ending.

'Minority Report' has the most off-the-wall ending in Spielberg's annals.
TV/Movies › Re: Hollywood directors: Rate or hate? What's your Take? by spikyn: 5:02pm On Mar 21, 2009
I must admit that I have yet to see Transporter 3 though I've seen and liked the first two quite a bit.

On the Oscars, my views have not changed since the nominations were announced. It was a missed opportunity up till then.  I have the ceremony but I've yet to watch it. As for the ceremony itself I wasn't in the least bit surprised, not because I knew the results but because I'd explained to a friend the paths I saw the Oscars having to take. It was either they had a fraudulent ceremony and live down another blunderfest ala Saving Private Ryan v Shakespeare in Love or they do a LoTR, save face and hope for the best which they did by showering everything on Slumdog Millionaire. Not that it was undeserving but then why were all the others; Frost/Nixon and Doubt in particular even nominated at all when the simple inclusion of WALL-E and TDK would have spiced up proceedings no matter the results. It would have shown that the Academy could think outside genres and it would be mirror what happens at the Grammys where nominations are used as a reward system.

DR, I really can't say without doing the spoiler thing, but one thing I can say is that it's truly the graphic novel brought to life as the guy replicated almost all the iconic scenes faithfully. That said, I can see why it's not #1 anymore.
