TV/Movies / Re: Any Comic Book Fans On Nairaland? by spikyn: 1:59pm On Jul 29, 2006
I'm a comic fan. Been since the '80s. The Hulk and the Silver Surfer were my favs from Marvel along with Wolverine+the X-families. On the DC front I loved the LSH, Teen Titans and Batman arcs [I think Batman Begins is the best/greatest superhero movie ever!]. Black and white war comics too where nice along with 2000AD [Eagle & Battle anyone?, gosh fun!]

I currently am following DC's 52/One Year Later and Marvel's Civil War/198/Annihilation and boy am I tripped, it's really hard to tell who's better sha. What the Illuminati did to the Hulk is crazy sha and see how Magneto's kids have changed everything ba?

Some comics you guys failed to mention when talking mature comics was Watchmen [which was the listed by time as one of the greatest books of the last 50 years] and V for Vendetta. A lot of Alan Moore stuff is pretty good or at least worth a read.

Much love
Family / Re: Are Men Really Scarce Or Rare For Marriage? by spikyn: 9:10pm On Jul 28, 2006
I have a different view.
I personally think it's several things that have made this seem like it is:

1. Gender confusion. Nope not "sexuality confusion" grin. Modern women have slowly grown to acquire a lot of traits that were previously considered "manly" i.e. aggressiveness and the lust for power/control and in doing so have succeeded in needing no male impact in their lives hence alienating some men. Let me explain further; opposites attract right? But if it seems like I'm going to be spending my life with my mirror image, I'd rather pass on that. This is not to say women should return to passivity/passiveness (God, I love making up words! cheesy ), it's more of a man though the ages have done/lived to do/been motivated to do great deeds mostly to impress or gain a woman's love/heart/respect but if there's nothing to fight for, it kind of kills all the buzz. Nothing to show off for. Think of the word "groom", short for "bridegroom" i.e. one who grooms the bride. You can't groom a bride that's not willing to be the bride.

2. Some men have just grown passive is the art of wooing/toasting et al. Now I don't mean yarns, I mean actively seeking a woman's favour/attention and all that jazz. If you read literature/books etc of years past you realise that marriage was more procedural and methodical as in the guy can meet and fall for a woman at first sight but he has to be proven "worthy" to get a free pass but now, "one night stands" anybody?

3. Finance. Lotsa folks have already beat up on this very valid drum and they are so right. The concept of "growing together" died in this generation. Not that it doesn't happen but it's much more scarce. Mainly that comes because a lot of men have ended up dumping their "soulmates" and moved unto younger "bed-buddies" after they become "made". So sisters have taken to the idea that if nothing else, wealth can keep you company when he's away and if he ain't got none, hasta la manana, amigo.

4. "Older/Younger"-type thingy. !!!oops the lights gone and I gotta post this before I forget all this when I come to complete this, soon.!!!
[Okay I'm back.]
Women tend to be attracted to security and experience and they need people to look up to (mentors), normally these can come with age (though not strictly); Men generally like to feel looked up to and in some extreme cases revered/worshipped sef, it's hard to find a woman of your generation/age bracket that can provide this especially since "extreme feminism" has eliminated some essential bedrocks. So women are left with going after older men who they can respect because of their age/wealth/experience while men go after women for the reverse.

5. Truth! Very few people like/can handle it. Period! No details/explanation needed!

6. Masks. We all wear masks. We all have ideas of what we think we should appear to be to other people. We have a need to be regarded in a certain light. Letting the true you hang out there is a risk we are finding incredibly difficult to do. Who wants to show off their warts and irritabilities and all that? Well, that is what we must do to find true love/marriage. Nobody will marry a "surprise package" in the hope that it ends up being a pleasant one, there's too much at stake/riding on it.

God of War was okay but it didn't deserve Game of The Year. That was for Resident Evil 4.
Family / Re: Would You Pay Your Children For Chores They Do? by spikyn: 5:58pm On Jun 14, 2006
This thread brings the "kidult issue to mind.

I'd read somewhere (I think Newsweek) that most kids today are spoilt, hard to argue maybe but a valid point remains that most kids born after the 2nd world war decided not to be like their parents and raise their kids with firm hands. So kids were allowed to be adults prematurely as in terms of demands, returns and "responsiblities". We of this generation are beginning to believe that our parents were just being mean by making us do chores and not making us "earn" money. Now many points have been raised here on both sides and none of them by themselves are wrong but in the wrong context they are. Leave us remember some things: the ability to enjoy working just because you can e.g. if all REAL artist(e)s depended on how much money they can make as their sole motivation, we'd have rubbish on TV/Radio and Movies [wait! that's already happening, dang!] grin !, dignity in labour, honest work for honest pay and the fact that what is learnt in childhood is hardest to unlearn.

Should children get money from their parents? Yes. For work/chores? Maybe. Children should learn/be taught that money can come from work but that's not the only reason to work. They should be taught that there are times when work does not have to pay you for you to do it.

If you teach a child that the only reason he works is to get paid, that child will learn never to enjoy the work of it's hands, only to look after the big number 1 and then they'll never be able to be charitable in anything as all their thoughts will be tuned to a investment/returns balancesheet kinda life and God help them.

Money is important, let's make no bones about it. Did our parents in some ways not teach us enough about money? Yes. Could we do a better job? Mos Def! Is completely flipping our childhood training on it's head the way? Hmm. One thing I do know sha, I like getting paid for my work but I also like the idea that I am able to pick and do any task without thinking that only the money I'm making matters and I thank my Parents for both gifts. And coming from a kid that never got any formal "pocket money", that's saying a lot.

This post is turning into the exact thing that Sony would love: specs, specs and more specs. Nintendo will own as it has always done. For every 3-4 good game on either Sony or Microsoft's machine(s). Nintendo have one great game that kills it to pieces. The next-gen wars will break at least one of Sony/Microsoft but Nintendo may sell less units but definitely make more money.

Sometimes it is forgotten that most Nintendo console owners have the same console for years while Sony (in particular) owners will have replaced their original console at least once.

Nintendo came outta left field and owned E3, if the crowds hadn't followed, Sony or Microsoft woulda thought they won based on "stats" and tech specs. Guys it's called "games" for a reason. Fun rules!!!
