Option 2.

Xhaka should not be the one to decide hire and fire decisions. The club/team does not revolve around him.
As far as our midfield options are concerned, Xhaka is the determining factor.

If you take option 2, then we don't need a DM?

Having reached this point, what then do we really need?

1. An out and out defensive midfielder to pair with Xhaka
2. A ball playing midfielder to replace Xhaka

Bros I play amateur football quite well as a teenager. I didn't end up playing football as a professional because I was doing well academically and my parents would have none of the irresponsibility that trailed most local players.

You see, coaches start players for different reasons. It is not every player u see on the pitch that are the best in their position in the team.

That Xhaka starts under Wenger, Emery, Ljunberg and under Arteta doesn't mean he is the best player in that DM role in the team. There are so many considerations that could have led to that decision. Since Alex song left that DM role, we haven't had any physical player to step into that role. Coquelin was short. We had paid good money for Xhaka who is 6 ft 0in as against song who left that is 6 ft 1 in. Xhaka was the only option. Considering the fact that we haven't invested in any DM afterwards, it is only normal for all coaches to stick with the physical Xhaka till they get money to cop another DM with his stature but more of a ball aying DM; not one who wants to stay in North London and pass the pass to Sambisa forest.

This is why I hope and pray out of the funds that will be made available to Arteta, he should get a DM and sell off Xhaka to recoup a part of the cost instead of continually managing Xhaka
I strongly doubt Arteta will sell Xhaka.

In the first place attaching Xhaka's name to DM is not correct because he is not a DM even though he is made to play the role at times. He is more a passer like Jorginho of Chelsea.

Arteta can get a proper DM to pair with him but not to replace him. That's why I made the point of getting players to fit with him. To replace him, we will need an higher version of a box to box midfielder. You can help us by suggesting one.

We've seen a ball winner like Torreira play alongside him winning all winnable balls, but that his superior ball passing ability how often have u seen it on display?

At what point did he display this attribute consistently that we all didn't notice?

If u ask me, Sincerely I think u are obsessed with Xhaka. You seem to have a believe he will reach some certain heights when he hasn't even left the floor.
The fact is I don't like Xhaka as he hasn't really been the player we expected. He isn't fitting well with the other squad members. But, that doesn't mean he is not a good footballer. To get the best of any footballer one has to consider the formation and style that he fits in. I think we haven't got what fits Xhaka, or rather Xhaka hasn't fitted to us.

He has his strong points (like his passing, he is known to be able to play out from defensive positions, and also he has a high passing accuracy) which though hasn't suited us as we wanted but can suit others teams based on their unique circumstances. Else, why has he consistently been regarded as first team by various managers and even made captain for every team he has played with- club and country?

So we either ship Xhaka and get the type of player we want or we get the type of players that he fits with.

Quick question ; Do u honestly think Arsenal can win the league with Xhaka playing DM all season long?
In a double pivot, yes. For Xhaka the formation of play matters. He needs a baller winner like Kante etc near him while he orchestrates play with his superior passing.

Bros why?

You quoted my initial post pointing it out that my submissions are invalid when I called for the sale of Xhaka because his contribution to the game in the middle of the park is below par( At times Guendouzi a 4cking 20 year old bests him in the middle). I clearly stated the fact that Xhaka has not really being the midfielder we all crave for until the role of Auxillary leftback was specifically carved out for him under arteta, you disagreed.

In order to make it seem he was being judged unfairly, you posited :

" There is a reason why Xhaka has always been on the first team since his U17 days in Nigeria for Switzerland to his time at FC Basel, to Borrusia Mgb , and Arsenal all under Wenger, Emery and now Arteta.

He may not be the super star midfield maestro, but he does bring value to his team

Now the same you has proposed that we all agree he just doesn't fit into arsenal playing style. Bros, Is that not the same thing as XHAKA IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR ARSENAL? Now is it not only sensible to sell a player whose style doesn't suit the team and get one whose style does?

Why did it take you this long to agree?
I actually conceded based on the point I made that every player is upgradedable which includes Xhaka. So if any manager chooses to replace him with a better midfielder, I have no issues with that. But to say Xhaka isn't good enough to play for us is a fallacy.

Yeah...OK means, just good enough. Nothing exceptionally more.

Lol, wen discussing players, please, let's don't call Ronaldo or Messi biko. Those 2 aren't players but aliens.

The bolded is true, which means we're getting somewhere. While kdb wasn't given chance at Chelsea tho, same with salah, so we can't judge them then..I remember reading an article were kdb literally begged mou to be given chance, but my guy no gree.
Xhaka on the other hand, we've seen him play time and again... But we all know his limited in some basic critical qualities according to his position. Can't tackle, can't push ball forward, No speed and all. So he's just good enough. Even his outside 18 shot have stopped sef. What we need is that "sometimes extra" in his quality and maybe we'll be good. Look at wen we paired coquelin with cazorla(on his peak season). Even tho coq is not scoring, nor assisting, but then we're always confident that once opponents are venturing to our half, they won't find it easy cos he's good at tackles and interceptions. He doesn't over-do and releases the ball quickly. He wasn't world class but we cherished him then...imagine we had that kinda person now partnering ceballos... Mehn, midfield don dope na.
That's the kinda players we want....
Lacazette also na anoda OK player.
We are getting there.

Like you opined, some players fit in while some don't. Just as Coquelin, he was as OK as Xhaka, just that he fitted well. If not where is he?

Lukaku didn't fit in at United, he is currently the best thing in Italy after Ronaldo. He is on loan.

Drinkwater was bossing the midfield for Leicester a couple of seasons ago, where is he at Chelsea?

I repeat the only players who can fit any where are the exceptional ones you asked me not to mention. Others are within the limits of the teams they play for.

Now let's agree, Xhaka is okay but doesn't fit in to our desired style of play.

?

Lol...
But to be serious. What the guy says is right. OK players especially in a critical position can hardly give you trophies. We need above OK players in most positions to be truly competitive. What he said is really the truth
Okay means good enough, sufficient, etc. Unless you take Okay to mean average.

Like I said, the only players that don't need upgrading are Messi and Ronaldo, probably Neymar and few others. The rest are OKAY.

The thing is that putting together a team takes more than just gathering talents or stars. While those big names can make a difference, they need to be the right names or else you will still struggle. See Galaticos.

A player like De Bruyne couldn't perform for Chelsea under Mourinho, same as Salah. Then fans may have referred to them as average. Players perform based on many factors including style of play, natural position, team mentality, team tactics, etc.

We may need a big black midfielder now because of our style of play that doesn't mean the players we have there are useless.

Football today especially in England demands more than OKAY, in the least be "very good" if not brilliancy.

OKAY players are good for 5th,6th and 9th, but very good for something bigger.

Auba is an example of a player beyond being OKAY and maybe Torreira, they are very good/brilliant and are top4 materials.

The young players and new signings can be understandable to look OKAY for the main time, but the main Men starting every week have to do more than OKAY to get us above 5th,6th and 9th.

Messi and Ronaldo's brilliance is top notch.

Yes, he's been OKAY, he may look better in orther leagues, but to move up with the top best in England, We need to upgrade to a better deep midfielder.
If he's been okay as you stated, that ends the discussion, because talking about upgrading, every player that is not named Messi or Ronaldo can be upgraded.

Everybody knows Xhaka starting at Arsenal has always been about his physical presence and Long ball ability(Which David Luiz presently looks better at it than him).

I don't know if we do watch the same matches, but equating Xhaka's role in that Auxilary left back position to what a short Kante does to cover for a tall Alonso when a corner is being taken in an opposition is just not it.

You are talking about Fernandinho , when last did he even start as a DM?

Nobody is saying Xhaka role as an auxilary LB is out of place considering the limited choice of options at his disposal, however it will be unwise if Arteta continues to use him in that role after the close of the next transfer window instead of buying a decent DM who can play his primary role well enough.

Xhaka thus far under Arteta is not well known for what he does in his primary role (DM), rather for what he plays in an auxilary LB role.

My concern is when we have our experienced LB's fit and there is no need for the Auxillary LB experiment anymore, trusting Xhaka with that DM role he hasn't really excelled at will be our bane. So I will prefer he is sold, get a proper DM that does his job well enough and let's have peace of mind in that position instead of always praying he doesn't slide an opposition player in front of the box each time he goes into a tackle.
What I get from you is that despite the role Xhaka plays for us, he isn't as good as expected.

I see you don't like Xhaka and it is quite understood. Everyone has their player preferences including the managers. One man's meat they say is anothers poison.
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m):
BlueRayDick:
You don't get it. Xhaka is only playing that makeshift Auxilliary LB role because that's like the only use he seem to have due to his weakness in core Midfield.8

Just look at any of the top 5 to 6 teams in the league and point out any of them that adopts this pattern of play that involves the DM/CM shuttling between the middle and LB position. To me, this pattern that involves Xhaka deputizing for Saka each time the latter attacks is only adopted to manage the shortage of manpower in the two roles. I mean we have an inexperienced youngster playing out of position in LB, and a Physical DM that has not played the DM role as it is required.

Arteta is only doing what a football manager is expected to do; MANAGE!

Just like I pointed out, when we have Tiernney back and probably a backup LB to replaced Kolasinac, we should sell off Xhaka and buy a proper DM. Xhaka is far from being a proper DM and should not be used as an Auxilary LB if and when we have a LB that can be trusted to do his LB job.

You won't find Ndidi, Fabinho, Kante, Mctominay and even Eric Dier playing Auxiliary LB when there is enough battle to be won in the middle of the park.
Bros your point is not valid. Midfielders covering FBs have been employed for long with many successful teams including current top4 in EPL.

You have not taken your time to watch, I know you are smart. Kindly refer to Football Made Simple on YouTube for tactical analysis.

Kante covers Alonso (remember Martinelli goal Vs Chelsea?)
Fenandihno drops into CB to a 3man defence as both FBs for City push up.
Henderson or Fabinho covers Trent Alexander Arnold or Robertson (as the case may be) for Liverpool as Saah and Mane tuck into forward position.

This tactic is widely used and known to be effective. It adds more bodies in attack when a team is with the ball.

So Arteta's use of Xhaka as an auxiliary LB is not out of place and only shows how tactically flexible the player is. Xhaka even drops to CB when we are defending and LB when we are attacking.

There is a reason why Xhaka has always been on the first team since his U17 days in Nigeria for Switzerland to his time at FC Basel, to Borrusia Mgb , and Arsenal all under Wenger, Emery and now Arteta.

He may not be the super star midfield maestro, but he does bring value to his team. You can wish for Partey but don't underestimate Xhaka.

Hmmm... To me, ozil isn't the worst o. The first header, I don't know who to blame tho, cos they just all allowed the guy free run, and as zonal marking, I don't expect ozil(of all people o), to chase that guy. At least, I know his limitations.
2nd goal isn't sokratis fault. That's fully on Leno for conceding the corner. Just kick your ball in, I trust Martinez for that. Also Luiz is to blame to. I mean head that ball out, he ducked away, allowing a simple tap in on the far post. It's so so sad. Further more, our attackers are bad...I still don't understand why he's alienating Martinelli of all people. When we all know he's a decent goalscorer. Not putting him in league, then Europa u benched him, wen you know he's our highest goal scorer, then you're putting him at extra time 2nd half. Like who does that. Me I'm still critical of Pepe tho.. He needs to learn how to hit the ball hard. Most of his ball are tame shots.

Also about the 442 ish, we'll need a very strong dmf and a cm with high work rate, which neither xhaka or ceballos is, thus our midfield will easily be bypassed. Also, we'll need clinical forwards, Pepe isn't clinical enough neither is lacazette. It might be good on paper but to be sincere, that formation won't work with our personnel we're parading.
I get your views. I think it's now affecting mine. Good points.

You are absolutely right about the primary reason for our El exit and I have clarified on that before now even during the game.

Pepe needs to work on his output. Aside the west ham goal which was well taken as he cut in to his left and hit it to the far corner, his other tries have been worrisome. He two other goals(against man u and Newcastle) was really to do with positioning than actually cutting in to his left. In summary, he needs to add end product to his play. Watched the highlights of ystdy game and I felt if only he hit the ball hard and far corner with any of the 2 opportunities he had, (one in first half, one in 2nd half extra time), we could have been singing a different song now. We can't solely be depending on auba for goals, it's just not right.

Also laca in that team need to be moved on sincerely. He hasn't been a prolific goalscorer for us, gasses out quickly and even his holdup play is not top notch, not also good aerially. We need auba there or groom nketiah and martinelli there.

Also, Amn should compete the rb spot with bellerin. Bellerin have been subpar this past few weeks. A little push in terms of competition can boost him up, if not, then straight to bench.

All in all, I feel the 442 on pitch won't work, especially those two in the middle of the park(ceb and xhaka). Our midfield will be overrun and bypassed easily
The fact is that apart from Auba and Saka (incidentally both are played out of position) every other player needs to improve really to meet up with our standard. The worst for me right now is Ozil, just watching the highlights of yesterday's game, the clown was at fault for the first goal which actaully damaged everything. People blame Leno but how can Ozil just stand there like a scare crow and allow the free run and header? Totally unbelievable, shambolic. Same goes to Socratis for the second goal. So disgusting!

Talking about the 442, its actually a counter attacking formation which bypasses the midfield and allows attack mainly from the flanks. I am not Arteta but I think it will maximise the strengths of our players.

An Arsenal fan based website have suggested we kick Ozil out of our starting line up. As in what does he bring to the table these days? He easily switches off on defensive duties and it's not like he has bunch of assists to make up with as he did before. So why start him at the expense of young upcoming players (I am not talking about Willock please) that are willing to work their socks off to keep a shirt.

We go 4-4-2
......................... Leno........................
Bellerin.. Mustafi..... Luiz... .....Saka
Pepe.... Ceballos.... Xhaka.. Martinelli
.......... Lacazette .... Aubameyang....

Saka as fullback till we have a proper LB available.
Creativity can easily come from three angles, Ceballos, Pepe and Martinelli /Saka
Lacazette can drop into midfield for link up play and provide space for Aubameyang.

U mentioned chilwell earlier, if tomorrow Leicester gets a record signing left back and Chilwell is relegated to the bench, do u think England will call him like u are claiming?
So then can you advise Bucks to play of England considering that no African has succeeded with them?
