Do you know that you can start your accounting career
immediately after you finished Secondary School?
But most commercial department students of secondary schools are
not aware of this, according to a recent survey

If you start ATS after secondary school, you would have
become a Chartered Accountant before you
graduate from the university.

This is how it works;
After your SSCE, in a year, you will finish ATS 1 the first diet and
ATS 2 the second diet because in a year there are two ATS diets.
The next year, you will finish ATS 3.
While in the university, since you have ATSWA certificate, you will start ICAN from
Skill Level because you will be given exemption for Foundation Level and
one paper in Skill Level(Audit and Assurance), it means you will not write any paper in
Foundation Level and one paper in Skill Level which is Audit and Assurance.

So in your year 1 in the university, you can write ICAN Skill Level and
in year 2 you can write Professional level.

You may ask, but how will I combine all the ATS courses with
my school studies? The answer is simple,
what you will be learning in the university is almost
equivalent to ICAN courses, if you are studying accounting,
but
if you are studying other courses, the truth is
your brain is still fresh while you are still in school and
it can accommodate as much as you allow, so no shaking.

This means by the time you graduate from the university,
you would have become a Chartered Accountant.
This will give you an advantage as a young graduated, in fact it is easy for
companies like PWC, Adekola Deloitte, KPMG, Accenture Inc and other
top accounting firms to employ you.

Isn’t that enough reason for you, your child or anyone you know to start their
accounting career journey immediately after secondary school?

Before I mention the Excel skills
that that every accountant needs,
let me share a feedback from the part 1 of this article.


“I have been a Chartered Accountant
for over 3 years now. Something
unbelieavable happened in my office recently.
There was vacancy for the post of Chief Accountant.


A colleague, Mr Orioye and I
were top contender for the job.
The company hired an outsourcing firm
to conduct the interview for Mr Orioye and I.



They panel started with an Oral interview,
then proceed to the use of SAGE 50,
Project Management and Excel.
I actually know how to use all
these packages but not really
very proficient in the use of Excel.


After the interview we were informed
that Orioye got the job for the position

wondering where to even begin,
pivot tables are a quick way of getting
some much-needed clarity. Pivot tables are
invaluable for extracting important
information from large data sets.


• EXCEL EVALUATE FORMULA FEATURE

There’s nothing worse than copying
a formula to multiple cells,
only to discover it doesn’t work or
do what you want it to.
Instead, test your formulae by going to
Formula and then Evaluate Formula,
or by using the shortcut Alt + M + V (Cmd + M + V on Mac).


• USEFUL EXCEL MACROS FOR ACCOUNTANTS


Macros are a way of automating repetitive tasks,
making it a great excel shortcut for accountants.
Although they can seem a little intimidating at first,

which tasks are suitable for automation and have
a good grasp of formulae to be
able to make the most of macros.

How I wished I had wrote last diet ICAN exams,
I had to skip the exam because of the work load in the office.
A colleague of mine advised me to plan ahead, like 3 months to ICAN exam,
So that I can study for just 1 to 2 hours a day and will finish studying the
2 courses I was to write but I ignored because I felt I was too busy.

This week I received a promotion letter too and was transfer to another branch….
Of course I am very happy about it but my work load multiply times 3,
now I work on Saturday and even on Sunday sometimes just for the new branch
to meet the monthly target.

Now I am not sure I will be able to write ICAN exam in the year 2020 because
I need to prove my worth that I am capable as a manager.

I am not complaining or regretting but I just want my story to encourage
all ICAN students to start early preparations even when they think they are busy.

My only regret is that what If I get a bigger job offer but It requires that I must be a Chartered Accountant……. Hmmm ‘yawa don gas be that ooo’

great animator of our time.




4. STEPHEN KING:

It is termed ‘the king of talk’
• Did you know that one of his most successful books,
Carrie, was rejected by 30 publishers,
one of whom told him that “negative utopias” do not sell?

• Did you know that after so many rejections,
King reportedly gave up and threw the
manuscript in the bin?
Luckily,
his wife retrieved it and urged him to have another go.

• Did you know that by the time she finished the
first of the Harry Potter books,

• Did you know that finally, a year later Bloomsbury
accepted it and extended a very small £1500 advance?

No doubt, it was one of the best decisions the

It’s never too late to start a fast food empire. Just look at Colonel Sanders.

• Did you know that it wasn’t until the age of 62
that Sanders, with a $105 social security check in hand,
pitched his chicken recipe to restaurants?

• Did you know that according to reports,
some 1,009 people rejected him?

• Instead of giving up, he hit the road and began trying
to sell his franchise-model chicken restaurant,
eventually he succeeded with a restaurant outside of Utah.

• It became the first Kentucky Fried Chicken and
the restaurant tripled sales in a year,
mostly from the colonel’s chicken.

The bottom Line is that every success has a failure experience within it.
So, you see, it’s rare that successful people have a smooth run.

Last diet, one of my students had this issue- overconfidence.

Tobi last diet, finished the syllabus and
solved enough ICAN past questions
and was ready to attack ICAN from
anywhere ICAN chose to pick questions from.
He did not know that he could fail that course.

Tobi had four courses left in Skills level.
He prepared well for two courses and the
other two courses, he did not prepare well for it.

In the exam hall, after attempting the two papers
he did not prepare well for, he did a re-check
to see any aspect that had errors and corrected it.
But for the other courses, he was too sure,
So he felt reviewing the work was not necessary
because he was so certain of what he wrote.

See some disadvantage here:

1. Overconfidence makes you to rate your

competence too high and makes you enter

into situations that are beyond your controls.

At the end of the day, there will be a

disconnection between what you think you know

(perceived ability) and what you actually know (reality).


2. It will allow you to start having

some thoughts that are not reasonable

which eventually leads to failure.


3. Overconfidence will not allow you

to do proper findings on the area of your weakness.

4. It will make you to be intolerant,

you will be so full of yourself,

you won’t want to hear other’s opinions



When ICAN result was released,
Tobi with his confidence went to check his result.
Tobi was surprised at the outcome,
He passed the two courses he thought
he did not prepare well for.
And
failed the other two courses he thought
was a concluded matter. He felt disappointed,
and was curious about what happened.

My question to him was,
“Did you review your work before submitting?”

Sometimes, over-confidence will make you
not to review questions properly before giving solutions,
and you’ll end mixing things up-
giving the right answer to the wrong question
and this will lead to failure.


However, it is not an excuse for
lack of confident in yourself.
Believing in your self will come
when you are sure to have done your best
by solving past questions in the Member’s area,
covering the video lecture at least two times,
attending the telegram class and participated.

I trust you will put in your best
into this ICAN March diet exam and
make sure you understand the question
before giving solution…. YOU ARE THE BEST…

Sometimes your job responsibilities determines what you learn next, My old time Chartered Accountant friend Banjo, who is now a fellow was promoted at work and now one of his job responsibilities is to communicate with external auditors and to provide guidance to coworkers and management regarding accounting discrepancies, compliance vulnerabilities and internal controls.

MY NEW YEAR RESOLUTION



Looking at Jackie (my cousins’ dog)


with the way she is bowling and barking


without trying to attack who she is barking at,


I’m reminded of how I used to be, in terms of charging up


at every beginning of every year with New Year resolutions.





I desperately make plan, set goals, draw up plans


without moving an inch towards achieving anything


Just in the same spot, saying positive things to myself


But never taking any positive action





I would fail to ask the relevant question, like;


How did I begin last year?


What goals did I set?


How many of the goals was I able to achieve?


What were my limitations?


Or what would I do differently?




Having achieved nothing over the years,


I began to do some critical self examination


And with the help of my mentors,


I realized that


It is only foolish to do the same thing, the same way


and expect a different result




So this year, I’m not just going make another resolution,


I’m going to review the last one I’ve had,


strategize- have a definite goal.




So for me, by the end of this year,


I want to be a senior auditor in my organization.



With this kind of goal, I know I have a lot of work to do


I know I have to engage in a lot of Personal self-development activities,


Update my accounting skills


And make sure that my productivity increases significantly

find keywords. Scanning for keywords would
help you understand thematerial when you
beginto read it properly.
In the case where youdon’t understand the
keywords based on the information provided in the text,
make use of the dictionary or the internet to check its meaning.

Understanding keywords help to better digest the
material and retain theinformation since you are familiar
with the essential words in the text.

For each of the ATS courses, list out the keys words
and get familiar with them all.
By the time you start studying intensively,
you will start coming across thesekeys words and
they will be automatically registered in your sub-consciousness.
You will notice how you can easily remember
those keywords when you start answering ATS past questions.

You checked your calendar or your phone for the date and
discovered that It’s just three months left to CIS Exams and then you said,

“OOOhhhh! time is too fast these days, abegi! I will start reading by tomorrow“.

Tomorrow comes again and you say to yourself again,

“Haaaa!!! I don’t know where the time is running to ooo, wooo!!! Let me just start by weekends.”

and this continues until exams are knocking on your front door.

It might seem funny but we are all guilty of that. You strategize
and make plans on how you will effectively study for
an exam but still you find yourself doing irrelevant things.


According to one of my students, Mercy, who
made plans on starting her exams preparations since a month ago
but still finds herself doing nothing about it as every day passes by,
she just keeps giving herself one excuses after another.

And now it’s just three months to the exams.

“My fear is that if I continue like this, I will end up not
preparing well for this exam due to my procrastinating attitude” Mercy said to me

I shared some tips with her so as to help her stay disciplined in
preparing for her exams. I would like to share
some of the tips with you as well;


First, you have to get rid of temptations because
Self-discipline becomes very easy when the things or
people that distract you are out of sight, out of reach.
Make sure before you start studying, your mobiles phones and
every other garget are switched off or completely out of site.
For some people that put their phones very close to them and
have active internet. Immediately they get a notification sound,
the urge to reply the message is always there. Therefore,
it is advised to put your mobile phones away when studying.
And try to get rid of every other temptation too.


Secondly, you have to stop the habit of perfect timing.
The truth be told, you do not need to wait for a perfect time to
start studying for your exams. Use the available time to
study for your exams; the available time is the perfect time.
Yes, we all want that time when we will be gingered;
when our body, spirit, and mind will be synchronized to study.
Most times, the so-called ‘perfect timing’ might
not show up. Probably until the exam is in a few weeks or
it might not even come due to unforeseen circumstances.
Therefore, the habit of perfect timing should be stopped
instead discipline yourself to read when there is available time. It pays more.



We are going to pause here for today, in my next article,
I will share with you the reason why it is important to
discipline yourself as you start preparing for your CIS exams and
give you other tips you need to achieve that.

The stress of coming back from work and
getting your child to do their homework can be
exhausting honestly.

You just want to shower eat,
attend to some little things and sleep.

Then you remember your child has to do his homework and
you have to sit with or shout at him or her to do their home work.

I remember how my sister shouts at her twins to
do their homework when she gets back from work.
She doesn’t get to sleep early because she is
trying to make them to do their homework before
8pm, so they can go to bed early.

Sometimes I help her out if I’m not also tired but
it’s usually a serious battle.
Sometimes the twins comply but more
than half of the time they don’t

Our neighbor who is a teacher came in one day while
we were trying to make them do their homework.

She discovered we were yelling a lot, so she explained how
she doesn’t force her children to do their homework anymore.
According to her, her children now pick up their
books themselves and they do their homework before 7pm.

At the beginning of every term she discusses calmly
with them what grades they are expected to come out with
And also explain how to get the good grades by
doing their homework every day.

Also she made them know that there would be
consequences if they fail to do their homework.

Immediately after hearing this, my sister started
implementing what the neighbor had told her

First she discussed and agreed with the twins that
they were to do their homework 30 minutes after
they got back from school

Secondly she decided that the TV will be disconnected and
games will be seized until they finish their home work

The consequences was that anytime they didn’t do
their homework, there would be
no extra snacks to school the next morning,
Plus no TV and games for one week

First it was strange for the twins
But later they got used to it
And they started doing things by themselves
Most importantly, they started doing
their assignment without shouting or sitting with them.

My sister now had extra time to do other thing by herself
and their teacher also commented on how they have improved

The truth is that it’s not easy to start the approach of
expectation and consequences but
with time they will catch up

your children so they would not have to depend on
you to get their school work done

“As in I don fail, I don tire to fail sef. I've given up on studying self

It’s an exam I fear most in the world, despite the testimonies i've heard.....

Studying isn’t always a walk in the park. Most students have
found studying tough at one time or another.
The struggle is to find the right motivation to study.

How do you concentrate and understand what is
being studied with all the distractions around you,
when you don’t know how to plan the time for
your studies due to your busy schedules

I had a friend who got overwhelmed.
She had to quit a job because she ‘had no work-life balance’ and now,
she is having the same problem in her new job.

"Everyone wants a piece of me,
I am at the end of my rope." she complained bitterly

So I replied

"How would you feel if no one in the world needed you?

If your phone never rang,

if your inbox was always empty,

if there was never anything disturbing you?”

"Oh my God. I would feel horrible" she replied

Being overwhelmed with your official duty causes anxiety
which get students stuck in their exam preparations.
Anxiety is our first reaction to stress as a person, but
over a long time, it is not the ideal way to respond,
particularly if we need to focus and think.


Instead of allowing that anxiety to overwhelm you and
distract you from focusing on your preparations,
Use it as a drive for your motivation.
All you just need to do is to first just take a deep breath….
and take a good walk. This will have a
soothing effect on the mind and body.

And then follow the steps below:

First, request for the 30 days success blue print-
it is very necessary for your study guide.

Secondly, make sure you follow the blue print strictly without
leaving any gaps. If you can, add extra hours

Thirdly, strictly follow the video lectures because
this is not the time to start looking for extra materials for backups.

Fourthly, visit the member’s area and practice on as many
past questions as possible on every topic studied because
that is your major secret weapon for Exams success.

And lastly, request for the lecture summary notes to
enable you extract some important highlight points.

Kindly check your recent vacancies in the dailies or online.
But
It is not your fault that you might have been of age after graduation.

After secondary, you probably stayed at home for few months or years
before you gained admission to the university.
In the university, internal and external strike
caused delayed. After all these, you will now go for NYSC.

Who do we blame ……….. the government?

Blaming anyone won’t solve this problem,
the only solution is for you to develop your skills while in the university,
such that you are already a professional and this will make you indispensable
to any company, not even your age will be a disadvantage.

You might ask, “How will I get to the interview stage if they specify age limit for the job?”

Provided your CV is loaded with your outstanding skills,
the age limit could be overlooked.
Also note even if there is age limit for a vacancy,
you should still apply for the job.
