FamilyRe: When Can A Nigerian Woman Divorce Her Husband? by StateOfMind: 8:21am On May 24, 2013
fellis: Women can win.
They most definitely can. They can put an end to all this oppression, like you said here

So that's a way for women to win isn't it?
I think the huge chunk of the problem comes from women having the mentality that they are inferior to men and so they have to put up with their sexist crap and also the mentality that marriage is a do or die affair.
What is even more disgusting is the fact that some men on this thread are actually happy that there are women that think like the women in that video. Tufiakwa!
Women better start learning to stand up for themselves and fight for their rights because they are on their own.
I meant women can't win with these nairaland men actually, should have included that in my initial post. I agree with your points and I felt the same disgust about them being 'excited' at their responses and concluding they speak for all married women. I guess it makes them feel good that some women are still enduring abuse in marriage as opposed to what females preach on nairaland.

As far as I am concerned, This is in no way a form of discouragement to the #teamsaNOtoviolenceandgetyouractstogether. Those who are ready to set themselves free will do so when they get the right dose of esteem booster and support.

From what I have read, majority of the women in this video are lazy and comfortable in their misery, who am I to attempt to remove them?

Your result should be out already. Have you finally sent you application to the school? I sent mine 2weeks ago and I got a reply from them telling to to expect a feedback by late june or early july.
FamilyRe: When Can A Nigerian Woman Divorce Her Husband? by StateOfMind: 12:08am On May 24, 2013
stillwater: While we work on the woman to be empowered, men usually sit back to be screaming feminism like chickens. What do men want?
It goes to show women never win. If a lady pursues her career to a level where she would be extremely comfortable and decides to settle down at 30-32, these same men would ask her where and what she was up to when her mates were getting married. The inferior ones would see her as too rich and automatically label her as a non-wifey material.

Majority of the women around me are working their fingers to the bone to keep their families going. My colleagues, aunties, mum and her friends, neighbours, sisters, infact 95% of the women I know are working(both blue and white collar jobs)! In an average nigeria home of today, we all know JUST one income is not enough. I don't know why some men here are assuming all abused wives are not working and dependent on their husbands. You'd be surprised a good percentage of these working class babes still get abused and cheated on. Some earn more than their husbands and are still treated like shi.tt.

I have an aunt who earns two times more than her husband, and yet she gets physically abused by this beast she calls husband. He throws her out as he wishes at night and they both built the house together. There was a time the man packed out of the house for 4months to his mistress's house. This woman took full responsibility of her two kids and the household for that period, (like she has been doing actually). Man came back later and they went back to how they were. I was really mad at her and had to ask my mum what they were doing about her case. As far as I'm concerned, she can survive very well without this man but families, church and society are still keeping her in that hell called marriage.

In my own opinion, It all boils down to the kind of man you marry. A kind hearted and God fearing man would not raise a finger on you whether you are dependent on him or not. If you settle for a beast, earn all the income in this world, you'd still be battered if you can not stand up for yourself and do what is proper without caring about what the society would say.

I won't preach independence alone cos I know independent women still get abused, I'd preach growing some b.allz and self esteem so as to know when to say 'I HAVE HAD ENOUGH'

By the way, I have not watched this video, but I don't think the number of women that spoke here are up to 30. Why do these men think their responses actually represent the general mentality of modern day nigerian women?
FamilyRe: Dilemma - Candid And Honest Advice Needed by StateOfMind: 4:48pm On May 22, 2013
debosky: ^^ The reality is what you've just seen - the blatant and contradictory sexism in providing advice we often see on NL.

The woman cannot be the party causing the hurt - it must be the man's fault 99.99% of the time.

If a man is misbehaving, the woman should beg him to reconcile.

If it's a woman misbehaving though, the man should get a divorce.

This is the general tone of things here, and if you provide any evidence to the contrary, you must be lying or biased. Even if you ask for advice on a specific matter, judgement must be passed whether that's what you were seeking their opinion on or not.
This is nothing but the honest truth. I have followed this thread since the day the poster opened it and I feel so sorry for all the parties involved because they (except the ex) are reading this.

Debrief, ile, baby-123 and sisikill, you have been really objective on this issue, and I respect that.

Even if we have contrary opinions, I think there are better ways to express them without being too harsh and judgemental. We all make mistakes, and everyone has a right to correct his or her wrongs irrespective of the gender. I cannot verify what this man has typed, but
So far there is no other side of the story for now, I can only relate with his posts alone.

Dominique was right anyway, this section is only for the thick skinned and I guess it explains why its uncommon to find a regular family section poster seek for advice. Most of them present themselves as know-it-all and perfect and as such condemn anyone as they wish.

God go help una.
CrimeRe: Man Bathes Girlfriend With Acid by StateOfMind: 10:14am On May 22, 2013
bknight: It shld be noted dat this article is most particular abt getting kind hearted nigerians to help d girl out on her predicament to get better treatment and care in india.

The article is filled with sympathy for her. Yes, but certain guys hv taken it upon themselves to help other ladies get into how an average nigerian guy reasons, and instead u'r all hurling insults. Whether brillance9000 spoke what u wanted to hear or otherwise, forums are for different ppl to speak their different minds. No offense, learn where u can. But I guess, until u become a victim.

And one arrogant f was talking how ok it is for a lady to hurt a guy much terribly and shldnt be sober abt it "afterall dem force am spend on her?"

She probably got d bath because she hurt him and didn't feel sober herself. Anyways, almost every comment spoke against d guy's actions.

The article neither gave hints dat she was gold-digging nor gave hints she wasn't.
She probably got d bath because she hurt him and didn't feel sober herself. Anyways, almost every comment spoke against d guy's actions.

Just look at this statement. Why would she feel sober. Am I the only one that read that this guy physically abused her? If this story was about her death due to the bf's beating, u lot would still blame her for sticking to a violent relationship because of the guy's money...

Btw, if every lady resorted to bathing their lovers with acid for quitting a relationship without being sober, majority of you men would have been given acid bath in your teenage years. Just maybe that would have saved me from reading some moronic posts this morning.
CrimeRe: Man Bathes Girlfriend With Acid by StateOfMind: 9:25am On May 22, 2013
smothly: Am a woman and a humanbeing also.for a man to pour an acid on just a mere girlfriend of he's,means he has invested so much in the relationship. But I don't support the pouring of acid, the guy should have just leave her and let her go for God to judge and God judgement is worse than that of human(though it might be long anyway maybe she will come to realise her wrong but I know God judgement is worse)........see the kind of trouble the guy put himself and see what the girl caused herself now,but I prays God helps her out of that condition fast and speedily.
You are not just a woman, you are a very foolish one and a disgrace to women. And to think I already assumed only the men agreed with Brilliance's post by liking it. Shame on you for ignoring the violence part in this story.
CrimeRe: Man Bathes Girlfriend With Acid by StateOfMind: 9:17am On May 22, 2013
Brilliance9000: Let me state first, that I do not condone the pouring of acid on her by the Boyfriend. However, for a guy to do such a thing, he must have invested so much into the relationship; and for most people its difficult to let go. I bet he had given her so much. Typical of Nigerian women...I will continue to eat your money, your time, have you suspend your future plans for me, but when I find someone else, I have the right to dump you when and how I want. WOMEN...be careful of who you date. If you don't like a man, say it at the outset and let him go peacefully and happilly; they are other women out there that need him. Don't try to waste his time and money. You wake up one morning you just tell him it's over...what the fu$ck? What do you expect him to do if he has invested so much into you? Even if you must do this, there are slow and deliberate ways to ease yourself from someone you have known for years and you know they love you. Slowly do it and before time, you both will lose attraction and break up. Don't just do it outright...it hurts badly.

WOMEN NEVER LEAVE A RELATIONSHIP UNTIL THERE IS SOMEBODY ELSE...BELIEVE ME ON THIS. WOMEN DON'T DO THIS.
And this post got 15 likes? My God, I am so so angry. What kind of men do we have in the majority in this country. What kind of beasts are some mothers pooing these days. Where in the post was it stated that he invested in her. Let me for a second think he did invest in her, does that in any way justify pouring acid on her. Did your brain filter the part the girl said he beat her so much she could not go to school for days?

Is it a force to continue a violent relationship? Should she have died by beating instead of opting out? Would you have told your sister or daughter to endure the same?

And that stoopid statement you typed in block letters thinking you just typed something reasonable is bull..sh1tt!! You should leave a relationship when your life is threatened (physically, emotionally or psychologically), who cares if there is someone else. Isn't it one's happiness and well being that should matter first? And in this scenerio, what difference would it have made if she had someone else.

I'm ashamed of some of you men...I totally am.

Who needs your commendation? This is not a competition, so we do not need to go about taking pictures to prove to you that our governor is working. Most of you already have the mindset of nothing good coming out of ibadan. Local, dirty, unplanned, dirty roofs, bla bla. Please keep up with the mindset while ibadan continues to develop and grow into a beautiful city.

@Op, I have to admit ibadan has really changed. Too many transformations to be mentioned. I still told my sister last week that she would not know her way around when next she visits ib.

alosiby92: ah man! that's mean! So now what are muslim gehls supposed to do if they have a bad hair day? or haven't braided their hair in a while?
#inconsiderate people...mscheeeew!
Lol, I don't know what the constitution says, but all I'm for is if its not meant to be used in school, then it shouldn't be forced or fought or protested thereby creating hatred in the young kids.

About the bad hair day, lol My mum is a nurse, she uses an hijab( small one like I posted up here) at work and outside work she uses just s headscarf because the latter is not allowed at work. She comes home to tell us about how some patients that use the full hijab are very dirty underneath (bad hair, smelly underwear) and because of that, some christian nurses do not even attend to them on time. Do I blame them? No. I wouldn't have either.

If anyone wants to use hijab, by all means they should be neat with it and not see it as a covering for dirty and smelly hair n underwear. She says once she attends to them, she warns them seriously never to come to clinic dirty and smelly else she also would not attend to them next time.

Btw, the patients I mean here are pregnant women who come for antenatal and some regular check ups have to be done.
Nairaland GeneralRe: hohoho!!kwanu? by StateOfMind: 1:20pm On May 17, 2013
breathing: That picture you put up there is misleading o, I'm yet to see a naija girl who would bring the sexy to hijab wearing. That colour you put up there is very misleading. All I see in Nigeria is black, white, and very dull pink. tongue Some women in Dubai even cover the whole face, eyes, nose included. If I'd seen hijab wearers here looking as cute as that girl, I just might have bought mine now.

Alos: I might be mistaken but I remember wishing sixteen a happy birthday not too long ago, or maybe it was someone else. I'm more interested in your real life replacement sha. Tell this gbegborun more.
You don't find yourself among cute muslim ladies because if you do, you wouldn't think the colour n style up there is misleading. I have a few of them as friends and I used to see them a lot back then in school, so there is nothing misleading about the picture. The choice of colour and style is an individual thing. You don't expect an uneducated\local poor young lady to look as gorgeous as that.

Leave the women that cover in dubai alone, they are not breaking any rule. It is their choice and their religion and government permit it. I am ONLY against using it for those that do not know the essence of its use while breaking the rule and NOT against hijab use. Same way I was against the lady that refused to wear trouser in nysc camp because of her religious beliefs. Its in the Holy book for believing women to cover their bodies with veil to preserve themselves from prying male eyes and for modesty sake. The fact that some have abused it does not mean how they use it is the ideal way and that is why I insist, if one wants to become an hijab user, work on you behaviour and be modest first, understand the basis of the religion and then hijab can follow.

If I start using a hijab today, I mean permanently, cos I do once in a while and a christian friend finds it offensive and decides to keep a distance, na the person problem be that. God first, me next, every other person follows.
