Hello house, I am about to buy a Tokunbo 2005 Toyota Echo for Uber/Taxify. I know fuel consumption would be great as it comes with a 1.5ltr engine but I want to know how rugged and durable the car is. Also how available are the spare parts? Is anyone here familiar with the car?
Please oga Gazzuzz, your input will be highly appreciated.

I think you are right about Uber increasing their fare. I took Uber from Pen Cinema to Lekki phase 1 on Monday. There was no single traffic, we didn't even meet any red light until we got to the toll gate and my fare was 3300. Now imagine if there was the usual traffic on that route, the fare would have been up to 4K which is very close to the fare before the price reduction. Uber will eventually have sense and decide to share the market with Taxify instead of trying to drive them out completely.

abitafah:
don't be quick to attack taxify when u hear about them. You are not the one that has been running their company for them before they came to nigeria, so u are the least person in the position to tell them what is sustainable and what is not. Have u ever heard that they liquidate before? On the other hand, its UBER that has increased their fare cos they couldn't continue with d promo. This week's fare has been surprising to riders...saying that its high even without a surge. That's because UBER wants u to make that 90k after 60 trips urself without dem having to add a dime. I havnt noticed any reduction in price of taxify. I do both UBER and taxify. I run to taxify whenever I feel frustrated with uber grin

Is that guaranteed on a 2000 Corolla?
Thanks
No driver should have a problem making that amount, they might just not want a small car like 2000 corolla. But find a driver first and reach an agreement.

I spoke with one of my former drivers on Sunday. He drives his own 2014 Kia now and he said he makes 120-130k weekly but he drives around with his tooth brush and new clothes in the car trunk. He works a lot!! If you can work long hours, I agree uber is still a nice business especially if you own your car. I'm considering swapping my muscle for a 2012 corolla. 6hrs daily and 60k weekly don do me grin grin

elninosanz:
I have said it before and i repeat again Uber is good business for those that are hardworking and smart. We should stop telling people otherwise. I posted my earnings last week where i made about 130k. This week on Monday i did close to 20k, Tuesday i did close to 25k, i only worked for about 5 hours today because i wanted to do some maintenance on my car , rest and power up for serious work on Thursday and the weekend. By the special grace of God i hope to make about 120k this week. I took a ride as a rider early this month and the driver told me he pays 40k to his partner and he has NEVER defaulted, and this guy closes early o. People are making money on Uber

I feel like people who are abusing Uber are doing it to discourage others so that there will be less drivers, and thus more surge. There is no need for that. The sky is big enough for everyone.

Romeo,
What do you think
With 28k weekly, you should be able to break even in ten months. The driver should maintain the car.

the good thing is that uber refunds 3 of such complains within 15 days. so most times i get my money back.

the one of last night she didnt pay since last week monday. so i reported it all the same because i dont expect uber to do anything about it since it is over 3 days it happened.
Do you mind if I post this story on instablog on IG. It will help counter the increasing public perception that Uber/Taxify drivers fight their riders for no reason and to also show there are many cultured people left in the business.
BusinessRe: If You Are Uber Partner In Lagos, Please Share Your Experience Here by Stealth100: 3:07pm On May 21, 2017
Yeah, you get trips more often now but most times they come from long distance because there are not as many drivers to cover everywhere. Also, if most Uber drivers return, let's say 50% of those that have left I bet you will open another account to join the rest of us in cursing Uber

the truth is that drivers are not forsaken. ever since the price reduction i havent noticed a drop in revenue.

on paper it looks like uber thinks more of riders but in reality it isnt true.

let me explain.

* there is a weekly hourly guarantee of 1400 on weekdays and 1500 on weekends. this mean that as a driver no matter what happens you either make 1500 an hr or uber makes up 1500 an hour for you.

* there are surges daily which doubkes or sometimes triple the price riders pay.

* there was a 1.3 guarantee through out this week. 1.3 means a 30% amount of the ride you just took. which is applied after uber removes their 25%.

then this week, if you drive 50 hrs online, you are entitled to 400 naira per trip. if you take 50 trips that week thats extra 20,000.

it all makes sense. but majority of drivers do not see it.

i do about 1200 miles a week.

Fuel from NNPC if i buy 3000 naira, i make about 15,000 from it.

now i dont drive around looking for the next trip unlike before.
Your assertions sound too good to be true. The truth is your are more likely to make more than 1500 gross per hour if you accept 80% of your trips so that guarantee is not really an incentive to me. The real issue is the amount of work you must have done within that hour would be way more than your earning.
With what Uber is offering and for anyone to make as much as you're making weekly, one would have to work for long hours, minimum of 12 to 15hrs a day. The beauty of driving on Uber for most people is that you have control over your time, and you don't have to work your ass off to make good money. At the rate you're working, if your car doesn't break down soon, God forbid you will. Also, how do you make time to attend to personal pressing matters with the loooong hours you're doing?

Maintenance cost is high as there are not many mechanics that can fix an hybrid engine if it develops a serious fault.
For me, Toyota Corolla and Yaris are the best. Even a mechanic apprentice can fix them and they consumes very little fuel

Can I ask one question?

Why are new partners not buying Toyota Prius vehicles for Uber?

These are hybrid vehicles and journies under 30mph use no petrol (they use electricity).

This is what we use as a family car and sometimes we go 2-3 weeks on a full tank. For a business that is petrol dependent, this seems like a no-brainer.

Uber has a higher standard than taxify. Uber is more popular than taxify is. has more appeal and swag to both local and international riders. Taxify are like apc promising 5000 naira to unemployed Nigerians and promising to feed a school children with their unsustainable 5% commision. just to gain the trust of drivers. majority of taxify drivers are uber rejects.

taxify has so far only gained drivers, but no riders like they expect. if uber reduces their commission to even 20%, taxify is dead.

so the thing about using low end cars on uber is that riders will keep rating you low because of that car and you will eventually get kicked out back to taxify. Uber has set the standard and over pampered their riders with higher end cars. you don't expect such riders to easily eat the humble pie and ride in a low end car.

trust me, I once received a request when I was driving that 2006 corolla. the rider called me and asked me, bros abeg which year is that your corolla? I replied 2006 and he said he was cancelling. for the first time in my uber career, I received 20 5 star ratings in less than 50 trips because of the car I am using... cars matter alot

a car that is well maintained will last longer on the road than a car than a car isn't . if anyone says they won't maintain their car because uber reduced fares, such people need a brain check because that car is their office and if anything happens to it, it's their fault.

riders have an option to cancel a ride on uber because they do not like the car and they are gonna start using it very soon.

it is even too early to start castigating the issue of reduced fares because let's face it, they haven't even driven their cars to know if they notice a difference. if anyone thinks their current car is too good for uber, by all means sell it and invest in another business. or you sell it and buy 100 golf 3's and put on the Ojota to surulere routes.

I don't know how people will just sit behind their phones and believe they know better than the brains that brought the uber thing to them in the first place. if you were half as smart as the inventors of uber, I doubt if you would still be in this level. these are geniuses that study transportation trends and implement services that the populace needs at the right time and someone who hasn't even driven since the day the new pricing started thinks he has an argument?

grin
Bros abeg take a chill pill, you're overdoing the job they paid you for already. If truly you have a car on hire purchase and you're working with this new fare I doubt you would have the time to type that epistle up there. I am a partner with 8 cars on uber. I drive a 2010 Camry myself full time. After uber made the changes in fares, I recalled all my cars, picked the 2006 Corolla and drove for three days to test determine how much could be made with the least fuel consumption car so I can intern make a decision on what the new weekly deliver will be. Even with the surge and all the unsustainable promo Uber is offering, this does not make any business sense anymore. My net income from one of the trips I took was 330naira. Not even a bike man would charge such amount for that kind of trip. I sold my Toyota Yaris today already, will sell more. When uber receives some sense, I will consider investing again.

Sir, I am an intending partner/driver on uber. The whole process has been cumbersome but at this stage I need experienced advice. Please how do I go about the Tax Identification Number? Is it true they require only coperate/current accounts?
I uploaded a duly stamped and signed acknowledgement paper from FRSC as I have misplaced my temporary driver's license but it was rejected. I booked a meeting with uber on Tuesday to talk about this, what are my chances?
Do you think a 2008 Honda Civic, manual hear with less than 100k mileage will pass the car inspection test?
Your suggestions/opinion/advice will be highly appreciated as I have very limited source of information other than all I've read on Nairaland

Thanks

eledalo:
Caution when investing Uber, as they can change their policies every single day. I have 10 cars on the platform and my experience with Uber is very telling.
Confirm from the vehicle inspection centre near you if they will inspect that specific the car.
Emailing Uber about current vehicle requirements will likely give you wrong information, as they reply from Capetown Joburg, Amsterdam, Kuala Lumpur, etc, so those people do not have information that is true for Lagos. Many many people have had to sell cars at a big loss/give out cars to family members because of wrong info.
I'll continue to provide info to help guide early partners and drivers so they don't fall into Uber's numerous traps

Don't mind the op. He knows nothing about cars. Some good naira used cars are better than some toks . As for me, I use the required lubricant both for the engine and gear, I don't patronise a Kazen, and whenever there is any issue, I fix immediately. If I want to sell such car , would you say because it is a naija used I should give you the car for peanuts? People mostly sell cars to upgrade not for inability to fix faults. I have seen guys spend as much as 800k for car repair, some as much as 300k; depends on the type of car . I believe anyone who was able to buy a car should be able to fix it.

Meanwhile , some toks are marred with multiple problems as 99.9% of them are bought savaged . After which they would be minimally repaired , repainted and smuggled into Nigeria via Cotonoua where some gullible folks will buy them with huge amount of money in the name of buying a Tokunbo car. The price of a Honda accord 2005 model, for example , shipped directly from America, the least you can get a road worthy one is $5800, add shipment cost plus custom duty, at the end of the day, the car won't go less than 4 million naira. Compare that with what the car goes for in Cotonoua, which is is around 1.5 million ,then tell me why you think the difference is that huge. It is simply because the so called Tokunbo are actually dead cars shipped into third word countries . Now , if I wanna sell my car, shipped directly and still declared road worthy in the States , someone will come and offer me peanut because it is not a tokunbo ? I will always laugh at such a person and move on
Sir, you are not completely right about the prices tou quote both in naira and dollars. I am a car dealer and I buy tokunbo cars for people almost every week. This Honda 2005 full option costs less than 1.4m about two months ago. With all due respect, don't compare the Tokunbo cars in Cotonou to the remodeled accident tokunbo cars that litter Nigeria.

If your car get used in NIgeria daily for more than 6 months your suspension would be gone, there is no if and buts,
If you buy a ar and it was salvage then its your fault cos its free to check if a car was salvage or not
Used car abroad have mandatory road worthiness check yearly,if not you cannot drive it.In America there would be a sticker to as when the last service was and wen the nxt service would be,.The Toks has a clear way of checking its ingenuity on line almost free of charge.I cannot say same for the Nigerian used.If you are buying as the 2nd owner in Nigeria and the 1st owner bought brand new in Nigeria then,I think one might be lucky but you still need to check suspension.
Everybody here seem to be talking about suspension. I don't understand what the big deal is. If the suspension is gone, simply get a new one. It does not cost an arm and leg like the critical parts of a car (engine and gear)
