gawu1:Savage!!!!! |
grandstar:NNPC is the only importer of petrol because it is not profitable for private entities due to fixed price regime and subsidy. This is not the case for the deregulated diesel and kerosene markets where those that can are allowed to import. Although the provision of the bill is anti competitive, it is necessary at this stage of our development as a way to encourage those who are bold enough to invest in refining, boosting local employment and more importantly saving scarce forex for importation |
nograv:Are we not tired of this Northern thing? Since the return to democracy in 1999, Southerners have ruled for 14 of the 22 years and poised to return to power in 2 years' time. The issues are beyond this ethnic thing |
BetaThings:Spot on. When people accuse Dangote of monopoly and Govt prop up, I ask two questions. 1. How come ALL govts, PDP or APC, Southern or Northern have 'favoured' him? 2. How come the same Dangote has thrived in other African countries like Ghana, Tanzania, Zambia, Ethiopia, Congo, Cameroon etc? He is an astute businessman who knows how to take opportunities. He raises money from Nigerian and international banks, meaning he is bankable etc. Others should learn from him rather than bicker endlessly. Another 2 guys towing that line are Tony Elumelu and Abdul Samad Rabiu. The more the better for our country |
As usual, many people go off discussing what they have little knowledge about. Folks bandying percentages about dont know what percentage of what they are talking about. NNPC will become a commercial venture and won't be spending money on wasteful frontier exploration when they will be required to raise their own money to do business. As someone said, fossil fuels are going out of fashion anyway. This North vs South thing is often overplayed. The bill that was just passed has been in the works for over 15 years. Money for exploration in the Delta came from somewhere too before oil was discovered there. In any case, oil is fading and other areas will rise to provide national revenue. Why are we so fixated on these issues that drag us back? |
Davinity:Same international law that the British are still enquiring about? |
Dead on Arrival (DoA) for 2 reasons; 1. He tried something similar ahead of the 2019 elections. He was even more vocal and antagonistic with his numerous letters but didn't even make it past planning stage 2. He had a golden opportunity to put the country on the path of sustainable growth after his tenure but chose to plunge us into the debacle of a failed third term agenda, foistering leaders that were not ready to mount the saddle. He should take a back seat and play an advisory role. |
Reno is displaying the same foolishness by talking too much. He may be the next guest of the FG. People like GEJ his former boss will disown him so fast he won't believe his eyes |
Mordecai:I don't have all the facts but my understanding is that it was a special intervention fund to enable states pay backlog of salaries, some extending up to 15 months in arrears. It was set up as a budget support loan repayable over a number of years at an interest rate, secured by irrevocable standing instruction deductible from future allocations. The CBN provides the funds but FG secures on behalf of states. |
Mordecai:Usually, banks that borrow money to state governments often secure those loans primarily through domiciliation of monthly allocations in that bank. For the loans taken from commercial banks, I agree that those banks should just go ahead and deduct from domiciliation proceeds except they can mutually agree to restructure. For the non commercial bank bit, those loans were a product of FG's intervention through the Ministry of Finance with CBN acting as FG's bankers. FG surely guaranteed the loans and should be involved one way or the other. Remember the states used most of that money to pay salaries and cushion the impact of economic downturn on the states. The alternative would have been to throw those workers out of work, a commercially sensible thing to do but politically not advisable. There are no easy solutions |
Mordecai:But you won't mention why Governors can't pay. They took loans, pay back. No they will prefer to blackmail FG as Obaseki did. But someone comes in to mediate a peaceful resolution and you are saying many things. Ok what is the solution? If FG goes ahead to deduct from their allocation, you will be the first to scream blue murder |
Buckeyemedia1:Exactly. Our people are poor students of history. Not denying people the right to self determination but there are more civil ways of doing it than bring misery on others. Those shouting Biafra and Oduduwa now will keep quiet once their kinsmen or women become President. The question i ask is if those kinsmen have done much for their regions when they were in power. Buhari won't be there forever, in 2 years he will be gone so why burn down the whole country because you don't like him? The common enemy is corrupt and selfish politicians. Having a separate country won't magically cure that illness. As you said earlier, if people know how much security votes these governors spend while crying that they don't have instrument of state, you will be numb. Every region is battling the demon of bad and corrupt leaders. Every single one. We can go into details and write a whole book on that. I will rather have a conversation about how we can get more involved in our political process, strengthen it and be patient until we evolve to having good leaders at all levels. Anything to the contrary is taking short cuts that bring conflicts, sorrow, hatred and retrogression. |
Buckeyemedia1:All Ortom does is shout and scream. He is the Chief Executive of his state for Chrissakes, crying like a baby. Wike is an opposition governor but see how he takes full charge of the state, imposing curfews, taking the fight to criminals and collaborating with security and local forces. |
Sunday Igboho stepped into a vacuum to protect people from marauders. That is commendable. However I expected that he collaborated with elected officials to further strengthen the gains. You can't fight a duly constituted government anywhere in the world without consequences. His further push for secession was terribly ill advised and that is the point of departure for many people. It shows lack of strategy and high thought when you go that route without thinking through what it takes. Grandstanding and protests will achieve little when you choose to confront govt forces for which you are ill prepared. It always ends in tears |
Poor attempt at playing politics by the PDP. So how do you describe the insecurity situation in APC states such as Kaduna and even the President's state of Katsina? |
texazzpete:You are right. Security matters are on the exclusive list hence responsibility of FG. I will only add that the huge security votes by Governors be taken away from them and given to FG to administer. You can't on one hand say there is nothing Govs can do about security and on the other hand allow them hide under opaque and unscrupulous security votes, some of which can be up to 20% of their annual budgets and for which they necessarily need not account for. |
lereinter:God doesn't answer these type of prayers. Buhari has survived all things thrown at him - sickness during his first term, covid that took out some of his aides, hatred and death wishes on a daily basis etc He just carries on with his life, ignoring all negativity. Dont you think the hand of God is upon his life? |
kutchs:We seem to have short memories- recall successes recorded by PMB in the first 3-4 years of his administration against insecurity. Most territories seized by BH were reclaimed. Religious houses that were bombed at will across the country by terrorists were eliminated. Remember all the precautions that Churches and Mosques were taking then. Abuja was being bombed now and again if you still remember. Niger Delta was a hotbed of kidnappings, bombings and vandalisations. I admit that some of those gains have been reversed in the past year or so. Reason why we should keep telling the President to overhaul his security team and strategies. Constructive engagement rather than hatred is way to go |
morgstreme:The records are there and much more. Thanks for highlighting some. I think the challenge is for Govt to ease the immediate pains experienced by citizens because of rising cost of living. I am more than convinced it is a short term pain but it will take more to convince millions others. |
Basher8583:In fact NOI will continue to thrive. PMB had to replace someone else with her as Nigeria's representative at WTO and supported her all the way. She will surely become WTO DG, only a matter of time, when Trump has left office. Same support PMB gave to Akinwumi Adeshina at the AfDB. He didn't mind that these two were the bright lights in PDP's govt. Get the best hands to represent us. |
Cut Femi some slack. He may be harsh but he is right. Oby's response was nothing short of hatred for the President. Has she rejoiced with the parents of these boys, sentiments aside? Preparing for another BBOB jamboree which was cut short. Lets call a spade a spade. Frustration with the President's effort at securing the country is justified but pure hatred crosses the line. |
donnie:Actually not. Many countries rushed to ban flights from UK but Nigeria didn't follow suit because there was no need. We are one of the few to institute these measures which has helped. Watch all these countries now adopt our measures. We should stop being negative and give these professionals credit when they get it right |
rafcrown:Typical lumping and muddling. Pick each item you scored there and expand with data why you scored it the way you did. Not enough to just allow emotions rule you. Be analytical |
quaintbloke:Absolutely!! I couldn't have said it any better. |
COMPAQ:One more thing - if you look through our history, you will discover several bust and boom cycles regarding oil price. However the worst and longest occurred in 2014 and lasted more than 3 years. To give you some data, this govt earned roughly 20- 30bln USD per year between 2015 and 2020 compared with average of 60bln USD per year earned in the 10 years before 2014. because of high oil prices then, there was little pressure on naira so exchange rate was relatively stable. However we should have used that oil price period to diversify our economy, curb our appetite for importation of foreign goods etc. Once we didn't do that, the next low oil price cycle was bound to hit hard with the naira taking a hit. You recall first thing CBN did when PMB came in was to ban some 41 items from accessing forex at official rates and tried to force us to look inwards. Unfortunately some bad policies contributed to it getting worse but they have now learnt and refined some of those. I maintain we need to boost local productivity, export more so we make more forex thereby improving value of naira. Oil prices will be depressed for a long term as the world is moving away from fossil fuels. Therefore we need to diversify like yesterday. This govt in my view is taking steps towards that and we should be supportive rather than castigating it. If they are managing with a third of revenues compared with pre 2014 period, they can go the full hog of even cutting further wastes and putting us on a sound footing long term through a campaign to boost local production |
COMPAQ:I have a different view. He may not be articulate but he isn't stupid. He is taciturn like Yaradua meaning he is not a showman and lacks vigorous citizen engagement skill. However, the path he is on will benefit the country in the long run. There is bound to be short term pain and I urge him to put reputable people at the helm of administering palliatives that minimises that pain. The social investment policies are good but more needs to be done to reach ordinary folks. Big decisions like scrapping subsidies in the downstream petroleum and power tariff sectors will set the tone for long term investments by the private sector and ultimately creation of millions of jobs. Of course prices will go up in the immediate but will be better long term. There is an infrastructure revolution going on and this will lay the foundation for a brighter future. The next Govt that succeed's PMB's is going to be the most important yet as they will be the ones to cement it. PMB knows that security situation has let him down, being an area he has the most qualification to tackle. Reason why he has been talking about Nigerians giving him more time. I wonder why he won't just sack his security leadership and have a restart, nothing shameful in that. All the frustration and anger are like own goals, definitely his doing. Overall if folks can look long term, they will find that this govt is laying the right foundations |
Elpipitaaa:No need to. The threat is not as high as to stop flights. That will be disruptive. As long as inbound passengers test negative before flying and upload their results, it should be fine. |
yinchar:You can't trust us to self isolate for 7 days, hence the need for the second test. People go as far as presenting fake negative certificates at point of entry. Those ones won't self isolate or present themselves for testing after 7 days. The reason why we can keep our airspace open is because of those strict protocols. If you pay online and get your QR code before travelling, you will not have issues with unscrupulous officials on arrival. Less than half the arriving passengers ever bother to pay online BEFORE they travel. Simple rules we can't obey but will scream at the top of our voices, typical us |
If focus was on the road to the airport, then fine. If you are talking about the International Airport itself, you didn't complete the story. You branched off into the local airport which has been there for long and currently being renovated. The new International airport is further down that road you turned left from. It is a piece to behold. Built by CECCC as one of those magnificent 4 around the country started by GEJ and completed by PMB. Pls return there and bring pictures and video to your readers. |
