The Ooni of Ife, His Imperial Majesty Ooni Adeyeye Ogunwusi Ojaja II, celebrates Children's day urging Nigerian children to believe in Nigeria and be dedicated to the development of the country.

The Ooni said this during the maiden edition of Children’s Day Celebration organized by the Ile Oodua and hosted by Olori Wuraola Otiti Ogunwusi, on Friday in Ile-Ife, Osun State.

Words from the Ooni:

"Children of the past believed so much in this country and that aided the growth of this country. Patriotism from the older generation children helped this nation so much, but the country no longer enjoys such today again. “Today’s children must also believe in this country, they must have hope in this country.

The children are the future of this country; we can do more for the children. We should be more afraid of the children than even the adult because the level of investment in them will tell on this country. Leaders must move closer to the children and that is exactly what you have seen my wife and I do today.

Mike Tertsea, an only child, hadn’t seen his mum, Felicia Ikpum, 56, since he left Nigeria to study at The John Carroll School in Bel Air, four years ago. Felicia didn’t even recognize him when she met him at the airport, last Friday.

During the school’s baccalaureate ceremony on Wednesday, Mike, a basketball player, was surprised to learn that the whole senior class, joined by faculty members, came together to make it possible for his mother to make the trip from Benue State, Nigeria, to see him graduate from high school.

“I was really, really surprised. It is really a blessing and I thank everyone for coming here. It was a tough drive for her. She said at one point, she felt like giving up. It was also her first time on an airplane, and for a while, she couldn’t recognize me and couldn’t believe it was her son,” Mike said.

Principal Madelyn Ball said one student had asked, “Is Mike’s mom coming to graduation?” “Everyone was concerned because, you see, Mike has not been home for four years,” Ball said. She then explained how the senior class was able to raise $1,763.

Mike and his mother got a standing ovation as they were asked to come up on the stage, where they each thanked the senior class for bringing them together. Mike said he is an only child and his mother is his only immediate relative. Growing up in the Benue area did mean real challenges, he said.

Kishan Patel, student government president, said: “It was a joy to do this. Mike sometimes went to bed hungry, and now you see this kid going to Division I with a basketball scholarship – wow, this is what it’s all about.” Mike, 6-foot, 10-inch tall, plans to attend the University of Rhode Island.

MAJOR SHAKE UP AS FCT MINISTER REPLACES ALL AEPB MANAGEMENT STAFF

…SETS UP TASK FORCE TO RECOVER N9.2BN OWED THE BOARD

The FCT Minister, Malam Muhammad Musa Bello has approved the immediate removal of the Director, Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), Baba Shehu Lawan who has been replaced by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Omolola Olanipekun.

The Minister has also approved the immediate removal of all heads of Department as well as Heads of Unit under the Board and directed their deputies to immediately take charge.

The Minister made these changes on Wednesday after he and the FCT Permanent Secretary; Dr. Babatope Ajakaiye met with the former management team of the AEPB.

Malam Bello directed the Director of the FCT Establishment and Training who was also part of the meeting to issue the new appointees with their appointment letters.

He warned that all lackadaisical attitudes to work must be stopped forthwith as Abuja must be rid of filth, street beggars, street hawkers and all other environmental nuisances immediately.

The Minister remarked that a lot of things are not going on well at the Board and further warned the new team to work to change the tide immediately.

He said that the former Director and his management team should ensure all handing over processes are completed by Friday 27th May 2016.

Meanwhile, the Minister has also directed that the former management team of the Board be constituted into a Special Task Force on the Recovery of N9.8 billion Debt owed AEPB.

Malam Bello instructed that the new Task Force be headed by the former Director of the Board and was given 8 weeks to do the recovery into FCT Administration’s coffers.

At the meeting, the Minister also approved the appointment of Squadron Leader Abdullahi Adamu Monjel (Retired) to head a special team of 200 security personnel drawn from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to assist in the enforcement of environmental laws in Abuja.

The Minister was however quick to warn the new management and special team to conduct their duties within the ambit of the law.

Malam Bello further warned that the FCT Administration will not tolerate any act of abuse of fundamental human rights of the residents in the discharge of their duties.

He urged them to diligently do their job by following and applying the law and due process.

The new Acting Director, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Omolola Olanipekun was formerly the Deputy Director, Environmental Degradation & Development Monitoring in the Abuja Environmental Protection Board.

It was a thrilling experience as the Cliqfest train berthed at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, bringing entertainment and fun beautifully blended with education and sports in what Nigeria’s leading youth centric brand, Etisalat has termed “edutainment”.

The students had the experience of a lifetime as they were treated to exhilarating performances by some of Nigeria’s finest music acts; Timaya and Mr Raw in a riveting concert. Timaya thrilled the students as he performed his hit songs such as “I Concur”, “Ekoloma Demba”, Ogologomma and “I Don Blow”. Mr Raw did not let the students down either as he delighted them with his evergreen song “Obodo” among others.

The event culminated in the emergence of Chiamaka Obiefuna, a final year student of English as the winner of the star prize, a Hyundai i10 Car after an exciting raffle draw. An overjoyed Chiamaka was thankful to Etisalat for the experience of Cliqfest which afforded her the opportunity to win a car.

The students were challenged to stay motivated, study and work hard in order to fulfil their potentials at a seminar anchored by motivational speaker and life coach, Niyi Adesanya.

There was also a novelty football tournament, dance competitions, rap battles among the students.

Tecno Mobile Nigeria partnered Etisalat to add spice to Cliqfest as it gave out lots of gift items to the students such as mobile phones, win pads etc.

Politics“missing” N30 Trillion: Okonjo-iweala Rebuts SERAP, Takes Legal Action by stephenduru(op): 12:26pm On May 23, 2016
Read a statement released some minutes ago by Okonjo-Iweala's media aide below.....

Our attention has been drawn to media reports regarding a court judgment alleged to have been entered against the Federal Government of Nigeria and Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala in respect of an action by the Socio-Economic Rights Agenda (SERAP) pursuant to the Freedom of Information Act.

The High Court, according to the media reports, ordered the Federal government and Dr. Okonjo Iweala to provide information relating to N30 trillion Naira allegedly unaccounted for.

Please note the following:

- Dr Okonjo-Iweala hastens to state that she was never served with any court processes in relation to the said matter. She has not read the judgment and would therefore defer any comments on the matter.

- However from the media reports, the case was instituted in February 2015 but was not served until July 2015 after Dr Okonjo-Iweala had already ceased to be the Minister of Finance.

- By the date the said papers were purportedly served Dr Okonjo-Iweala was no longer a public officer and could therefore not be the subject of a request for production of any documents or information under the Freedom of information Act.

- The Court processes must have been served on others because the attention of Dr Okonjo-Iweala was never drawn to the matter in which she appears to have been sued personally. She therefore did not engage any lawyer to act for her in the matter.

- The decision of SERAP to anchor its case on a baseless and unsubstantiated allegation by former CBN governor, Professor Charles Soludo that N30 trillion – about seven times the total annual budget during the Jonathan administration – is missing confirms SERAP’s dubious motives and its role as a tool for politically motivated actors.

- It is curious that the first time Dr Okonjo-Iweala is being made aware of a matter filed against her in court is in news reports reporting the delivery of judgment. She has instructed her lawyers to take steps to set aside the judgment as it affects her.
