Nairaland General › Boko Haram Threatens To Bomb Ui, Other Varsities by stranger12(op): 6:15pm On Sep 12, 2011 |
THE authorities of the University of Ibadan have confirmed the threat by members suspected to be Boko Haram sect that they wanted to bomb the university between 12 and 17 September. The rumour was confirmed, Monday by the Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Pro. Elijah Afolabi Bamigboye. The threat led to panic among staff and students of the institution as there was heavy security presence at the main entrance to the university, opposite Agbowo Shopping Complex. Many staff and visitors going into the campus were subjected to thorough search by security operatives who were armed with AK 47 rifles and bullet proof jackets. Prof. Bamigboye who said he too was subjected to the search said security beef-up was necessary to check any eventuality. “We heard rumours that a group which detests education is likely to descend on institutions where education is being imparted. We heard that U.I is top on the list. When we heard the rumour of the threat to bomb U.I, we did not want to take chances. We’ve heard of experiences in the past, especially the recent bombing of the UN house in Abuja as well as the Force headquarters which left several people dead”. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/09/boko-haram-threatens-to-bomb-ui-other-varsities/ |

i just watched a news clip (CNN/BBC cant remember).
South African police cordoned off a dying man. You would think they would help him. You would think they would call for the ambulance, but no, they didn't do any of the humane thing a sane man would do.
they just circled the dying man in their police cars, stood there chatting,
The man was choking on his blood. He was bleeding from the head, and breathing heavily. That man could be my brother, or friend, but they let him die in agony.
How can you watch another man die just like that without lifting a finger to help?
Shame on the SA government, the police, the thugs. They are all on the same side. |

I think the FIFA ranking can now comfortably put Nigeria in the lower ranks Both players and coach alike had no passion to win although I noticed uche/odemwingie/shittu wanted something from the gameI understand the NFA has no passion either. Money seems to be their only goal. Something is definitely not right with Nigeria. |

WASKY-WAJA: FO2 i salute you, i recognise your authority and analytical mind. Am still waiting to hear from you before i make further comment. Maybe with this 40m loan our people will learn how to make use of OPM. That is the norm in the western world. Average Nigerian is afraid of bank loan why
My friend is still getting the money. The bank will give a 6 months loan renewable loan to another 6 months. This is the best in the sense that if you achieve your target within the first 6 months you pay them back if not, you extend the loan to another 6 months. It is a customised loan.
FO2 , FRANKIRIRI and Other, your comment and opinion will be hugely appreciated. I have heard the opinion of other contributors. You are all great people!
I promise to publish in this forum whatever that happens after 6 months or 1 year.Whatever my friend makes will be published. I want our Nigerian people to stop being afraid of taking calculated risk. Average westerner i have met in my line of business in the past are not afraid of taking risk and we are supposed to be better because we are children of God. "The only thing you have to fear is fear itself".
In the the future (if it pleases GOD) we will be happy we took the risk. . . . here is the root of a credit crunch. Leading us all like sheep to artificially inflated share prices and a crash in the economy of Nigeria. |
Politics › Nigeria Agrees $15.2 Bln Oil Budget For 2008 by stranger12(op): 10:08am On Jan 30, 2008 |
ABUJA, Jan 28 (Reuters) - Nigeria has agreed with foreign companies a joint investment of $15.2 billion in oil ventures this year and is seeking debt finance to foot part of its share of the bill, a top official said on Monday.
The five joint ventures that pump the bulk of Nigeria's crude oil have suffered from decades of underinvestment due to government budget constraints, causing output to stall or even decline despite huge reserves in the ground.
The government has a long-standing target of reaching 4 million barrels per day by 2010, but output has stagnated at around 2 million for the past few years.
"(Our target) implicates a significant investment in the upstream which is not happening now," Minister of State for Petroleum Odein Ajumogobia said at a press briefing.
The eight-month-old government of President Umaru Yar'Adua aims to address the issue with a thorough reform of state-run Nigeria National Petroleum Corp. which should allow it to raise international capital at highly competitive interest rates. http://www.reuters.com/article/oilRpt/idUSL2823314520080128I just wonder what the return on investment would be. |

Business › No Sense In Naira Re-demonination, Changing N1 To Coin Is Better by stranger12(op): 10:07am On Aug 27, 2007 |
Hello Nairaland
What's all the noise with "Naira Re-denomination".
Japan's industrialized, free-market economy is the world's fourth-largest purchasing power parity (PPP) after the United States, the European Union and the People's Republic of China. It is the second-largest by market exchange rates. Its economy is highly efficient and competitive in areas linked to international trade although productivity is lower in areas such as agriculture, distribution, and services.
The Japanese economy is one of the strongest in the world. Only the USA has a higher GNP. The Japanese currency is the Yen.
1 yen = 1 Naira
Does Nigeria really need to re-denominate? Is that priority?
Kobo is a lost cause, Making N1, N5, N10 into coins would be better. |
Culture › Re: Why Do Nigerian Dudes Walk Around Holding Hands? by stranger12: 10:37am On Jul 11, 2007 |
Have you seen middle east men greet each other?
They hug and kiss on both cheeks.
Now that is what a westerner would call gay.
In most socially developed countries (e.g Nigeria) "Gayism" is being involved in the very act of sodomy with someone of the same sex. In the very tolerant socially developing world (e.g. USA) It is the act of showing a feminine side that makes you gay. e.g turning your head funny, holding another man, throwing your hands like a lady, using make up, drawing your words when speaking, e.t.c.
In Nigeria, the these various manifestation when extreme are considered psychotic and would probably be referred to a mental hospital |

Allwell: yeah! With the A/C on and windows up, you've got a lesser drag than when windows are down. Adams and Jamie of mythbusters did a great work on that. Again, it depends. A = drag on motorway (@100km/hr) B = force required to keep the A/C on. use your A/C if B < A . . . . its economical use your A/C if B > A . . . . its cools the mind Don't be kobo wise and naira foolish. |

The lady in the picture you posted is most likely Hausa,
Hausa tend to have marks that come off the corners of the mouth in divergent lines and the incisions are usually "longish" and tiny
A lot of Yoruba tribal marks are parallel and thick. The tiny ones are not tribal but medicinal. |

naijadey: . . . Straying from the topic a bit, I've always wondered why there is no wet suit for terrestrial purposes. It would reduce the need for AC significantly because water is a very good insulator from heat or cold. thats how come scuba divers don't go into hypothermia (low body temp.) without wearing huge coats. The thin layer of water trapped in between the wet suit insulates them from the surrounding cold water. I don't think it would be a good idea. check the data below Thermal Conductivity - k - (W/m K) Air , 0.025 Alcohol or oil , 0.15 Aluminium , 220 Cork , 0.05 Glass , 1.1 Rubber , 0.16 Sandstone , 2.4 Soil , 0.15 Stainless steel , 15 Water , 0.58 Wood , 0.04 – 0.4 Rhea: The A/C of my car does not bring about increase in fuel consumption.
Yes, the sound of the engine changes when you put on your AC. That does not affect at all the rpm of your engine (unless it is not factory-fitted).
The fuel consumption of your car is a function of how many rotation per minute (rpm) your engine crankshaft does. The rpm of my car remains the same (900) when the engine is idling whether the AC is on or off. If you mismatch a powerful compressor probably from a 2.0l engine to a 1.8l engine, ofcourse it will draw the engine down and burn more fuel. rpm of a car is analogous to stm (step per minute) of human. this is obviously not an absolute indication of the quantity of * eba to be consumed after performing a feat of 100meters dash in 9.09 secs. the engine rotation per minute may remain the same but it depends on how the car was programmed For instance, you can carry a bucket of water and run 100 meters in 15 secs. and you can run at the same speed without carrying the bucket of water. but we all know which is more difficult. bottom line, your engine will use up more petrol to do any additional power generated by your car either in closing the window or running the AC. In physics, power =work / time the more the power required, the more the fuel required to do the work. the two functions are proportional. * eba - a nigerian staple food (98% carbohydrate, 2% fiber and silica/stones) |

Most people want to be remembered for their good deeds and I think this would make the governors perform better. I think Governors that have excelled in their job should be given a national award of excellence.
Is this suggestion something to think about or is just fit for the bin? |
