To be brutally honest, yes, yes, Go for it. You have a stable source of income so why waste your own time. You're very matured to proceed thither. I am just about your age and I am also getting married this year, even though I don't really have much, so you're not alone. Honestly, I wish this write-up could get to our lawmakers!! No one should monopolized power. All regions should get to decide who rules them.

So now the Presidential and NASS elections have been concluded, and President Muhammadu Buhari returns elected. Going forward, what are the issues we should learn from these elections and how can we strengthen our democracy through them?.

For me, there is just one glaring issue I feel we should take care of as a country, which is our voting system.

From the just concluded elections, PDP nearly won the majority of the states(though APC still won majority of states anyway), but the fact struck me that even if Atiku had won more states than Buhari, Buhari would have still been declared winner because he had more aggregate votes. This is wrong, and should be corrected.


I think we should operate a system where the candidate who won the highest number of states is declared president, even though the other candidate wins majority votes.


Our electoral laws should be amended in such a way that a party must win majority states, not necessarily majority votes.

So for example, in the case that PDP wins in 26 states and APC wins in 11 states, but APC has the total majority of votes(due to winning the so called "big states" ) , PDP should still be declared winner because they won more states.

Also, in the case that APC has 17 states and PDP has say 19 states, but APC has majority aggregate votes, then PDP is still winner.

If the parties splits the states 18 each, then the party with the highest aggregate votes can then be used to declare a winner.

Pros:

1. Prevents the sense of Northern hegemony that permeates Nigerian politics, due to the north having more population, hence, more voting power, which translates to more political power.

2. Allows politicians to work hard in winning general support from every part of the country, not just focus on the few "swing states" like Lagos and the K4.

3. Reduces sense of marginalisation by small states. Everyone becomes equal.

4. The true will of the people across board is reflected, not the will of the north or the will of the south west.


With this just concluded elections, I see a future situation whereby party A wins more states but has lesser votes, and party B has lesser states but more votes, Party B is then been declared winner. This will not be ideal.

Good points you have there. I could not agree more. Winning across board shows love for the political candidate unlike winning big states with a large population.

It would reduce the effects of bloc votes given by a particular region with a large population at the expense of the whole population who are voting for someone else.

You'd see a politician win one or two very large local government areas (maybe because his kinsmen hail from there, or the rigging was orchestrated perfectly and the sheer number of voters in that region didn't help matters) in his state or country, and then as a result, he has the popular vote even though a larger part of the state don't want him. This is not healthy for our infantile democracy. Methink a politician should be elected to delicate positions like governors and president because he's able to pull massive votes up north, down south, far west and also to the east. This is not a refrence to the recent election per say.

We don't want a politician who's only loved by his kinsmen, we should set aside this popular vote system abegi because it doesn't help us.

California alone in the last US election gave Hillary, I think 2M vote and she got the popular vote by I think 2 million votes, too, and that's where the problem lies. Godfathers in Nigerian politics especially at the governorship levels have clung to this loopholes in Nigerian since winning big (and rigging by implication) in key local government areas clinches the ticket for another four years of tyranny, mis-rule and looting. If the popular votes system is set aside, it would be extremely difficult (they'd be no center of gravity to hit, or put more differently, it would be more expensive for these democracy-thieves to carry out their aim because they'd have to right more local government areas) or what do you think?

As a matter of truth, I'm talking from experience having lived in the north for 17 years. Besides who made the agreement with the northerners? There was no such agreement, and a typical northerner would just ask, "Shi muslimi me?" Since he's not a Muslim, they wouldn't vote for him. Inzabi, Kaffiri, wade baya sallah?

There has been this belief that the north would reciprocate the goodwill if the SW votes in GMB. However, going by the recent polls and the opinion of any sane Northern, that's far from the case. In fact, just today I heard not one or two high profile northerners voice disappointment in the SW's votes, and of course, no non-northern ever wins the presidential election without splitting the northern votes. If Kwankwaso or El rufai or Tambuwal or any other high profile northern vies for the presidential position, forget that shit, no sane northern (with the way they think and all that) would vote against him, and these guy's votes are massive, I mean really massive. Withdrawing my Payoneer funds directly to my bank account will cost me $15 (that's Payoneer withdrawals fee). Withdrawing through Payoneer MasterCard would cost atleast $9 and atleast 2 weeks of wait time, so what do I do?

This is the breakdown. I would have to go collect the card in the state capital and that would cost me $4 ( If I send someone I get charged $2).
